Design And Analysis Of Adaptive Control Systems Over Wireless Networks, Ali Albattat, Benjamin Gruenwald, Tansel Yucelen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we study the design and analysis of adaptive control systems over wireless networks using event-triggering control theory. The proposed event-triggered adaptive control methodology schedules the data exchange dependent upon errors exceeding user-defined thresholds to reduce wireless network utilization and guarantees system stability and command following performance in the presence of system uncertainties. Specifically, we analyze stability and boundedness of the overall closed-loop dynamical system, characterize the effect of user-defined thresholds and adaptive controller design parameters to the system performance, and discuss conditions to make the resulting command following performance error sufficiently small. An illustrative numerical example is …

Despite intensive investigations of Bi2Se3 in past few years, the size and nature of the bulk energy band gap of this well-known 3D topological insulator still remain unclear. Here we report on a combined magneto-transport, photoluminescence and infrared transmission study of Bi2Se3, which unambiguously shows that the energy band gap of this material is direct and reaches Eg = (220 ± 5) meV at low temperatures.

The Advanced LIGO observatories detected gravitational waves from two binary black hole mergers during their first observation run (O1). We present a high-energy neutrino follow-up search for the second gravitational wave event, GW151226, as well as for gravitational wave candidate LVT151012. We find two and four neutrino candidates detected by IceCube, and one and zero detected by Antares, within ±500 s around the respective gravitational wave signals, consistent with the expected background rate. None of these neutrino candidates are found to be directionally coincident with GW151226 or LVT151012. We use nondetection to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW151226, adopting …

Here we show that novel, energy-recycling stairs reduce the amount of work required for humans to both ascend and descend stairs. Our low-power, interactive, and modular steps can be placed on existing staircases, storing energy during stair descent and returning that energy to the user during stair ascent. Energy is recycled through event-triggered latching and unlatching of passive springs without the use of powered actuators. When ascending the energy-recycling stairs, naive users generated 17.4 ± 6.9% less positive work with their leading legs compared to conventional stairs, with the knee joint positive work reduced by 37.7 ± 10.5%. Users also …

SKS, SKKS, and PKS splitting parameters measured at 34 seismic stations that we deployed in the vicinity of the Cenozoic Malawi Rift Zone (MRZ) of the East African Rift System demonstrate systematic spatial variations with an average splitting time of 1.0 ± 0.3 s. The overall NE-SW fast orientations are consistent with absolute plate motion (APM) models of the African Plate constructed under the assumption of no-net rotation of the global lithosphere and are inconsistent with predicted APM directions from models employing a fixed hot spot reference frame. They also depart considerably from the trend of most of the major …

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). No GWs from IMBHBs were detected; therefore, we constrain …

There are many optical detection and sensing methods used today that provide powerful ways to diagnose, characterize, and study materials. For example, the measurement of spontaneous Raman scattering allows for remote detection and identification of chemicals. Many other optical techniques provide unique solutions to learn about biological, chemical, and even structural systems. However, when these systems exist in a highly scattering or turbid medium, the optical scattering effects reduce the effectiveness of these methods. In this article, we demonstrate a method to engineer the geometry of the optical interface of a turbid medium, thereby drastically enhancing the coupling efficiency of …

Superfluid-Mott Glass Quantum Multicritical Point On A Percolating Lattice, Martin Puschmann, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study a particle-hole symmetric site-diluted quantum rotor model in two dimensions. The ground state phase diagram of this system features two distinct quantum phase transitions between the superuid and the insulating (Mott glass) phases. They are separated by a multicritical point. The generic transition for dilutions below the lattice percolation threshold is driven by quantum uctuations while thetransition across the percolation threshold is due to the geometric uctuations of the lattice. We determine the location of the multicritical point between these two transitions and find its critical behavior. The multicritical exponents read z …

Hexagonal ferrites not only have enormous commercial impact (£2 billion/year in sales) due to applications that include ultrahigh-density memories, credit-card stripes, magnetic bar codes, small motors, and low-loss microwave devices, they also have fascinating magnetic and ferroelectric quantum properties at low temperatures. Here we report the results of tuning the magnetic ordering temperature in PbFe12-xGaxO19 to zero by chemical substitution x. The phase transition boundary is found to vary as TN ∼ (1-x/xc)2/3 with xc very close to the calculated spin percolation threshold, which we determine by Monte Carlo simulations, …

Homogenization Of Plastic Deformation In Heterogeneous Lamella Structures, Rui Yuan, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
It has been shown that unlike its constituent nanocrystalline (NC) phase, a heterogeneous lamella (HL) composite comprising NC and coarse-grain layers exhibits greatly improved ductility. To understand the origin of this enhancement, we present a 3D discrete dislocation, crystal plasticity finite element model to study the development of strains across this microstructure. Here we show that the HL structure homogenizes the plastic strains in the NC layer, weakening the effect of strain concentrations. These findings can provide valuable insight into the effects of material length scales on material instabilities, which is needed to design heterogeneous structures with superior properties.

A fuzzy logic-based color histogram analysis technique is presented for discriminating benign skin lesions from malignant melanomas in dermoscopy images. The approach extends previous research for utilizing a fuzzy set for skin lesion color for a specified class of skin lesions, using alpha-cut and support set cardinality for quantifying a fuzzy ratio skin lesion color feature. Skin lesion discrimination results are reported for the fuzzy clustering ratio over different regions of the lesion over a data set of 517 dermoscopy images consisting of 175 invasive melanomas and 342 benign lesions. Experimental results show that the fuzzy clustering ratio applied over …

This paper investigates the task assignment and path planning problem for multiple AUVs in three dimensional (3D) underwater wireless sensor networks where nonholonomic motion constraints of underwater AUVs in 3D space are considered. The multi-target task assignment and path planning problem is modeled by the Multiple Traveling Sales Person (MTSP) problem and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to solve the MTSP problem with Euclidean distance as the cost function and the Tour Hop Balance (THB) or Tour Length Balance (TLB) constraints as the stop criterion. The resulting tour sequences are mapped to 2D Dubins curves in the X − …

Effects Of Specimen Size And Yttria Concentration On Mechanical Properties Of Single Crystalline Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Nanopillars, Ning Zhang, Mohsen Asle Zaeem
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The nanoscale plastic deformation of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ) is highly dependent on the crystallographic orientations, i.e., dislocation is induced when the loading direction is 45° tilted to {111} and {101} slip planes, while tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation dominates the plastic deformation when loading direction is perpendicular to the slip planes. This study investigates the effects of specimen size and yttria concentration on the mechanical response of single crystalline YSTZ nanopillars. Through uniaxial compression test, the smaller-is-stronger phenomenon is revealed in nanopillars deformed through a dislocation motion mechanism. Serrated stacking faults are observed in the smallest nanopillar, while neat …

The Dynamics Of Dark-Bright (DB) Solitons Beyond The Mean-Field Approximation Is Investigated. We First Examine The Case Of A Single DB Soliton And Its Oscillations Within A Parabolic Trap. Subsequently, We Move To The Setting Of Collisions, Comparing The Mean-Field Approximation To That Involving Multiple Orbitals In Both The Dark And The Bright Component. Fragmentation Is Present And Significantly Affects The Dynamics, Especially In The Case Of Slower Solitons And In That Of Lower Atom Numbers. It Is Shown That The Presence Of Fragmentation Allows For Bipartite Entanglement Between The Distinguishable Species. Most Importantly The Interplay Between Fragmentation And Entanglement …

The manual process for privacy setting could be very time-consuming and challenging for common users. By assuming that there are hidden correlations between the visual properties of images (i.e., visual features) or object classes and the privacy settings for image sharing, an effective algorithm is developed in this paper to achieve automatic prediction of image privacy, so that the best-matching privacy setting can be recommended automatically for each single image being shared. Our algorithm for automatic image privacy prediction contains two approaches: (a) feature-based approach by learning more representative deep features and discriminative classifier for assigning each single image being …

Word Embeddings Are a Low-Dimensional Vector Representation of Words that Incorporates Context. Two Popular Methods Are Word2vec and Global Vectors (Glove). Word2vec is a Single-Hidden Layer Feedforward Neural Network (Slfn) that Has an Auto-Encoder Influence for Computing a Word Context Matrix using Backpropagation for Training. Glove Computes the Word Context Matrix First Then Performs Matrix Factorization on the Matrix to Arrive at Word Embeddings. Backpropagation is a Typical Training Method for SLFN's, which is Time Consuming and Requires Iterative Tuning. Extreme Learning Machines (Elm) Have the Universal Approximation Capability of SLFN's, based on a Randomly Generated Hidden Layer Weight Matrix …

In this paper it is proposed an easy-to-use verification and validation method for adaptive control laws that relies on time domain simulations. The problem is set as a trajectory falsification problem that is the search of closed loop trajectories that, starting from a set of admissible initial conditions, reach a set of unsafe states. The falsification is placed as a nonlinear optimization problem whose decision variables are the initial condition of the states and the uncertain parameters of the system. The falsification is performed iteratively using the local gradient of the sensitivity function derived from a linearized model of the …

A Decentralized Adaptive Control Architecture For Large-Scale Active-Passive Modular Systems, Benjamin C. Gruenwald, Ehsan Arabi, Tansel Yucelen, Animesh Chakravarthy, Drew Mcneely
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Decentralized control of large-scale active-passive modular systems is considered. These systems consist of physically interconnected and generally heterogeneous modules, where local control signals can be only applied to a subset of these modules (i.e., active modules) and the rest are not subject to any control signals (i.e., passive modules). Using a set-theoretic adaptive control approach predicated on restricted potential functions, we design decentralized command following control architectures for each active module such that they can effectively perform their tasks with strict performance guarantees in the presence of unknown physical interconnections between modules and module-level system uncertainties. The efficacy of the …

An Algorithm For Enlarging The Region Of Attraction Using Trajectory Reversing, Nilay Kant, Dhrubajit Chowdhury, Ranjan Mukherjee, Hassan K. Khalil

Trajectory reversing is a method commonly used for estimating the region of attraction of stabilized equilibria. Using a discrete set of points obtained by trajectory reversing, this paper presents an algorithm for estimation and mathematical representation of the region of attraction using convex hulls. Several two-dimensional examples are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the algorithm. The method provides larger estimates compared to that obtained by existing algorithms, but its main advantage lies in its applicability to higher-order systems. The mathematical representation of the region of attraction is useful in applying the Impulse Manifold Method, which was developed for stabilization …

This paper presents an algorithm to enlarge the estimate of the Region of Attraction of stable equilibria of underactuated systems. To achieve this, we use a combination of the Sum of Squares (SOS) method and the Impulse Manifold Method (IMM). Initially, the SOS method is used to optimize the control input u(x) in order to obtain an enlarged Region of Attraction. The IMM is then applied on enlarged Region of Attraction obtained using SOS to further enlarge it. The IMM is implemented using high gain feedback and to demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm, we present simulation results where an …

Design and development of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) with a controlled degradation profile promises effective drug delivery with a predetermined carrier elimination profile. In this research, we fabricated a series of redox-responsive polysulfide-based biodegradable SiO2 NPs with low polydispersity and with variations in size (average diameters of 58 ± 7, 108 ± 11, 110 ± 9, 124 ± 9, and 332 ± 6 nm), porosity, and composition (disulfide vs tetra sulfide bonds). The degradation kinetics of the nanoparticles was analyzed in the presence of 8 mM glutathione (GSH), mimicking the intracellular reducing condition. Results indicate that porosity and core composition …

Swing-Up Of The Inertia Wheel Pendulum Using Impulsive Torques, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee, Hassan K. Khalil
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The swing-up control problem of the inertia wheel pendulum is revisited in this paper. As different from existing methods, purely impulsive control inputs are used for swing-up. A mathematical formulation of the problem indicates that swing-up can be achieved using impulsive inputs applied at two discrete time instants. Two different swing-up schemes are presented and validated using numerical simulations where the impulsive inputs are approximated by high-gain feedback. The results of numerical simulations establish a direct link between high wheel velocities during swing-up and control strategies that take the pendulum directly to the upright configuration. They also indicate that the …

In this paper, we propose a micromechanical approach to predict damage mechanisms and their interactions in glass fibers/polypropylene thermoplastic composites. First, a representative volume element (RVE) of such materials was rigorously determined using a geometrical two-point probability function and the eigenvalue stabilization of homogenized elastic tensor obtained by Hill–Mandel kinematic homogenization. Next, the 3D finite element models of the RVE were developed accordingly. The fibers were modeled with an isotropic linear elastic material. The matrix was modeled with an isotropic linear elastic, rate-independent hyperbolic Drucker–Prager plasticity coupled with a ductile damage model that is able to show pressure dependency of …

By establishing coincidences between target ions and scattered projectiles, and coincidences between target ions, scattered projectiles, and ejected electrons, triply differential cross-section (TDCS) information was generated in terms of projectile energy loss and scattering angles for interactions between 1-keV positrons and electrons and Ar atoms. The conversion of the raw experimental information to the TDCS is discussed. The single-ionization TDCS exhibits two distinguishable regions (lobes) where binary and recoil interactions can be described by two peaks. A comparison of the positron and electron impact data shows that the relative intensity of both binary and recoil interactions decreases exponentially as a …
