There is a compelling need for the development of new sensory and neural prosthetic devices which are capable of more precise point stimulation. Current prosthetic devices suffer from the limitation of low spatial resolution due to the non-specific stimulation characteristics of electrical stimulation, i.e., the spread of electric fields generated. We present a visible light stimulation method for modulating the firing patterns of electrically excitable cells using surface plasmon resonance phenomena. In in-vitro studies using gold (Au) nanoparticle-coated nanoelectrodes, we show that this method (substrate coated with nanoparticles) has the potential for incorporating this new technology into neural stimulation prosthetics, …

Introduction: The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) will be constructed at Mt. Haizishan, Sichuan Province, China. Among several detector components of the LHAASO, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is of great importance for gamma-ray astronomy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. The single-channel counting rate of a photo- multiplier tube can reach as high as 30 -35 kHz, most of them are background noise hits from the low energy cosmic ray showers, bringing a big challenge on data transferring, data storage and event reconstruction. Methods: In this paper, a dedicated trigger scheme and a fast noise filtering …

The collisional shift of a transition constitutes an important systematic effect in highprecision spectroscopy. Accurate values for van der Waals interaction coefficients are required in order to evaluate the distance-dependent frequency shift. We here consider the interaction of excited hydrogen 6P atoms with metastable atoms (in the 2S state), in order to explore the influence of quasi-degenerate 2P and 6S states on the dipole-dipole interaction. The motivation for the calculation is given by planned high-precision measurements of the transition. Due to the presence of quasi-degenerate levels, one can use the non-retarded approximation for the interaction terms over wide distance ranges.

On 2017 June 8 at 02:01:16.49 UTC, a gravitational-wave (GW) signal from the merger of two stellar-mass blackholes was observed by the two Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory detectors with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13. This system is the lightest black hole binary so far observed, with component masses of 12+7 -2M⊙+2-2M⊙ (90% credible intervals). These lie in the range of measured black hole masses in low-mass X-ray binaries, thus allowing us to compare black holes detected through GWs with electromagnetic observations. The source's luminosity distance is 340+140 -140 corresponding to redshift -0.07 …

Effect Of Explosive Charge Geometry On Shockwave Propagation, Catherine E. Johnson, Phillip R. Mulligan, Kelly Williams, Martin Langenderfer, Jeffrey Heniff

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With advancements in the 3D printing of explosives, the understanding how the shape of an explosive charge influences the energy expansion and subsequently the focusing of energy is becoming increasingly more important. Theoretically, explosive charges could be printed to focus the energy on targets of interest or to synthesize nanomaterials. The first step to quantifying the energy expansion and shock wave convergences for a 3D printed charge is to examine simple geometries of traditional explosive charges (non-3D printed). Detonation of 15 PETN-based primasheet charges in the spherical, cubic, cylindrical, and tetrahedral configurations have been examined in this study. Qualitative data …

First Narrow-Band Search For Continuous Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars In Advanced Detector Data, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars …

Rheological Properties Considering The Effect Of Aggregates On Concrete Slump Flow, Tae Yong Shin, Jae Hong Kim, Seong Ho Han

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rheology of concrete allows us to understand the flow behavior of concrete and further extend the quantitative evaluation of its construction performance. The use of a concrete rheometer is promising for the purpose but sometimes limited high associated cost and procedure complexity. This study proposes a simulation-based model that correlates the slump flow test results to a concrete's rheological properties, allowing quantitative evaluation through this simple method. The proposed model is based on single-fluid simulation using the volume-of-fluid method, with an extension to accommodate the partial segregation of coarse aggregates. Either the channel flow or the L-shaped panel filling of …

Performance Metrics For Frequency Selective Surface-Based Sensors, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell Dec 2017

Performance Metrics For Frequency Selective Surface-Based Sensors, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A frequency selective surface (FSS) is a periodic array of conductive elements (located on a dielectric substrate) that has a specific transmission or reflection response when illuminated with electromagnetic energy. Since the FSS response is sensitive to changes in substrate properties (permittivity, loss tangent, and thickness) as well as element geometry, FSS-based sensors have strong potential as a wireless sensing solution. To this end, this paper proposes three performance metrics (resonant frequency, resonant depth, and quality factor) to quantify the effect of substrate properties on sensor performance. These metrics are applied to a patch- A nd loop-based FSS sensor. The …

An Innovative Fuzzy Backstepping Sliding Mode Controller For A Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Shiqian Wang, Jingjuan Zhang, Qian Zhang, Chaoying Pei

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamical model of a Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is presented in this paper. The Tri-Rotor has three rotors with two fixed-pitch propellers and a tiltable propeller to control the yaw displacement. The model is obtained via the Newton–Euler approach and a nonlinear control strategy called fuzzy backstepping sliding mode control is proposed for the attitude stabilization and altitude tracking of the vehicle. The designed controller consists of a backstepping sliding mode controller and a fuzzy logic controller. For the problem of determining the backstepping sliding mode control coefficients, an optimization method of gradient descent algorithm has been used. …

Nanograin Size Effects On The Strength Of Biphase Nanolayered Composites, Sixie Huang, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we employ atomic-scale simulations to uncover the interface-driven deformation mechanisms in biphase nanolayered composites. Two internal boundaries persist in these materials, the interlayer crystalline boundaries and intralayer biphase interfaces, and both have nanoscale dimensions. These internal surfaces are known to control the activation and motion of dislocations, and despite the fact that most of these materials bear both types of interfaces. From our calculations, we find that the first defect event, signifying yield, is controlled by the intralayer spacing (grain size, d), and not the intralayer biphase spacing (layer thickness, h). The interplay of two internal sizes …

In recent decades, electro spun nanofibers have been applied to different potential fields such as sensor devices, tissue engineering scaffolds, wound dressing, filtration, drug delivery, etc. and significant review papers have been published in these fields. However, the use of electro spun nanofibers in metal ion adsorption is emerging and comparatively innovative. Nanofiber materials hold great potential in advancing the growth of metallurgical technologies and progress for the separation of metallic ions from various sources. The Physico-chemical removal processes of adsorption use nanofibers due to their large surface area to volume ratio and the availability of a wide variety of …

A nematic topological superconductor has an order parameter symmetry, which spontaneously breaks the crystalline symmetry in its superconducting state. This state can be observed, for example, by thermodynamic or upper critical field experiments in which a magnetic field is rotated with respect to the crystalline axes. The corresponding physical quantity then directly reflects the symmetry of the order parameter. We present a study on the superconducting upper critical field of the Nb-doped topological insulator NbxBi2Se3 for various magnetic field orientations parallel and perpendicular to the basal plane of the Bi2Se3 layers. The average stellar mass (M*) of high-mass galaxies (log M*/M⊙ > 11.5) is expected to grow by ∼30% since z ~ 1, largely through ongoing mergers that are also invoked to explain the observed increase in galaxy sizes. Direct evidence for the corresponding growth in stellar mass has been elusive, however, in part because the volumes sampled by previous redshift surveys have been too small to yield reliable statistics. In this work, we make use of the Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Catalog (S82-MGC) to build a mass-limited sample of 41,770 galaxies log M*/M⊙ …

We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the first Advanced LIGO observing run. This search investigates the low frequency range of Advanced LIGO data, between 20 and 100 Hz, much of which was not explored in initial LIGO. The search was made possible by the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population, corresponding to a sensitivity depth of 48.7 …

On 2017 August 17 the merger of two compact objects with masses consistent with two neutron stars was discovered through gravitational-wave (GW170817), gamma-ray (GRB 170817A), and optical (SSS17a/AT 2017gfo) observations. The optical source was associated with the early-type galaxy NGC 4993 at a distance of just ∼40 Mpc, consistent with the gravitational-wave measurement, and the merger was localized to be at a projected distance of ∼2 kpc away from the galaxy's center. We use this minimal set of facts and the mass posteriors of the two neutron stars to derive the first constraints on the progenitor of GW170817 at the …

Joining titanium alloy and stainless steel is becoming an urgent need since their outstanding mechanical properties can be utilized integratedly. However, direct fusion joining of Ti6Al4V to SS316 can cause brittle Ti-Fe intermetallics which compromise join bonds’ mechanical properties. In this research, Laser 3D Printing was applied to explore a new Ti6Al4V to SS316 multi-metallic structure. A novel filler transition route was introduced (Ti6Al4V → V → Cr → Fe → SS316) to avoid the Ti-Fe intermetallics. Two experimental cases were performed for comparison to evaluate this novel route’s effect. In the first case, SS316 layer was directly deposited on …

The mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities beneath the Tanzania Craton and the Eastern and Western Branches of the East African Rift System are imaged by stacking over 7,100 receiver functions. The mean thickness of the MTZ beneath the Western Branch and Tanzania Craton is about 252 km, which is comparable to the global average and is inconsistent with the existence of present-day thermal upwelling originating from the lower mantle. In contrast, beneath the Eastern Branch, an up to 30 km thinning of the MTZ is observed and is attributable to upwelling of higher temperature materials from either the upper MTZ …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The aim of the present study was to report on a complete synthetic approach, namely benzylation-hydrolysis-acylation-hydrogenation, to the synthesis of regioselectively acylated quercetin analogues using low-cost rutin as a starting material. Three quercetin analogues, quercetin-3-O-propionate (Q-pr), quercetin-3-O-butyrate (Q-bu) and quercetin-3-O-valerate (Q-va), containing 3-, 4- and 5-carbon aliphatic acyl chains, respectively, were synthesized and characterized with 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR and mass spectrometry. Compared with quercetin, all three analogues exhibited improved lipophilicity. The lipophilicity of the analogue increased with increasing acyl chain length. Q-va exhibited the highest lipophilicity among the three analogues, but a lower water …

Identification Of Aspergillus Fumigatus Udp-Galactopyranose Mutase Inhibitors, Julia S.Martin Del Campo, Meital Eckshtain-Levi, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic human pathogen responsible for deadly, invasive infections in immunocompromised patients. The A. fumigatus cell wall is a complex network of polysaccharides among them galactofuran, which is absent in humans. UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) catalyzes the conversion of UDP-galactofuranose (UDP-Galf) to UDP-galactopyranose (UDP-Galp) and is an important virulence factor. UGM is a flavin-dependent enzyme that requires the reduced flavin for activity; flavin reduction is achieved by reaction with NADPH. The aim of this work was to discover inhibitors of UGM by targeting the NADPH binding site using an ADP-TAMRA probe in a high-throughput screening assay. The flavonoids …

Ab Initio Structural Studies Of Cyclobutylmethyl Cations: Effect Of Fluoroalkyl Groups On The Relative Stability Of The Carbocations, Prakash Reddy, Golam Rasul, G. K. Surya Prakash

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ab initio calculations at MP2/cc-pVTZ level show that the trifluoromethyl group has a strong destabilizing effect on the nonclassical, σ-bridged cyclobutylmethyl cations. The GIAO-MP2 derived 13C NMR chemical shifts indicate substantial charge delocalization from the neighboring cyclobutyl ring for carbocations with an α-fluorolkyl group as compared to the 1-cyclobutylethyl cation, and this enhanced charge delocalization in case of the α-(trifluoromethyl)cyclobutylmethyl cation would lead to the ring-opening rearrangement to form the relatively more stable nonclassical primary cyclobutylmethyl cation, in which the carbocation center is farthest from the strongly electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group.

Traditionally, Radiative Transfer (RT) formulation has been used to simulate scattering from snow layer with the incorporation of phase matrix of scatterers in the formulation. Typically, spherical scatterers were assumed to represent the ice particles embedded inside the air medium and Mie phase matrix was applied. However, the real scatterers in the actual snow are generally more irregular than the assumed spherical shape. In this paper, a numerical solution based on the Hierarchical Equivalent Source Algorithm (HESA) has been developed to calculate the phase matrix of scatterers of other shapes to be incorporated in the existing RT formulation. 4h-Sic Electrostatic Microactuator With Optically Controlled Actuation, Feng Zhao, Marcus Daniel Trimble

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents that actuation of a 4H-SiC electrostatic micro actuator was controlled by an optical signal. The micro actuator was monolithically integrated with a transistor switch on the 4H-SiC substrate. DC voltage bias on the transistor produced an electrostatic force on the micro actuator, which bended down the cantilever beam and caused a shift in the resonant frequency to a lower value. The transistor switched on when activated by UV illumination, and photogenerated current in the transistor reduced bias voltage on the micro actuator, which relaxed the electrostatic force and consequently increased the resonant frequency.

The source of the gravitational-wave (GW) signal GW170817, very likely a binary neutron star merger, was also observed electromagnetically, providing the first multi-messenger observations of this type. The two-week-long electromagnetic (EM) counterpart had a signature indicative of an r-process-induced optical transient known as a kilonova. This Letter examines how the mass of the dynamical ejecta can be estimated without a direct electromagnetic observation of the kilonova, using GW measurements and a phenomenological model calibrated to numerical simulations of mergers with dynamical ejecta. Specifically, we apply the model to the binary masses inferred from the GW measurements, and use the …
