Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr Jan 2018

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr

Doctoral Dissertations

"Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4 and NaAlH4 indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …

Critical Buckling And Post-Buckling Behavior Of Thin-Walled Liners Encased By Underground Pipelines In Saturated Soils, Zhaochao Li Jan 2018

Critical Buckling And Post-Buckling Behavior Of Thin-Walled Liners Encased By Underground Pipelines In Saturated Soils, Zhaochao Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study aims to investigate the structural stability of thin-walled liners encased in functionally-obsolete underground pipelines in saturated soil under external hydrostatic pressure, a concentrated load, temperature change or their combination, and develop a simplified circular arch model of thin-walled liners when not constrained by the pipelines. The friction and adhesion on the interface between a liner and its constraining surface (pipeline or grouting), and the pressure gradient on deeply-buried pipelines are neglected. The critical buckling load of elastic liners is analytically derived under a plane strain condition using the principle of minimum potential energy. The analytical solution is either …

Crustal Structure Beneath The Eastern Margin Of The Tibetan Plateau And Adjacent Areas From Receiver Function Stacking And Gravity Modeling, Yunxin Peng Jan 2018

Crustal Structure Beneath The Eastern Margin Of The Tibetan Plateau And Adjacent Areas From Receiver Function Stacking And Gravity Modeling, Yunxin Peng

Doctoral Dissertations

"To provide constraints on the mechanisms responsible for the uplift and crustal thickening of the eastern Tibetan Plateau, the thickness and Vp/Vs values of the Moho beneath 153 seismic stations are obtained by stacking P-to-S converted phases from the Moho and gravity modeling. The resulting crustal thickness generally decreases from the northwest to the south-east, from about 60 km in the Bayan Har Block to 30 km in the Sichuan Basin. The crustal Vp/Vs measurements in the Qinling Orogenic Belt, Bayan Har Block, Chuxiong Basin, and Yangtze Platform indicate an overall intermediate to felsic crustal composition. With a relatively thick …

Engineering Zeolite Catalysts Through Porosity And Surface Acidity Control For Selective Production Of Light Olefins, Xin Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"Zeolites are broadly used as heterogeneous catalysts in various chemical and petrochemical industries to produce value-added chemicals and fuels, mainly due to their large surface area, acid-base properties, high thermal stability, and excellent shape-selectivity. In this dissertation, various zeolite catalysts were engineered through fine-tuning micro-meso-macro-porosity and surface acidity. The engineered zeolites were used as heterogeneous catalysts for production of light olefins such as ethylene and propylene through alcohol dehydration and hydrocarbon cracking reactions.

To control the zeolite porosity and acidity, SAPO-34@ZSM-5 and SAPO-34@Silicalite-1 composites with core-shell structure were synthesized and evaluated in ethanol dehydration reaction. Analysis of catalytic performance revealed …

Micro-Slotting Technique For Measurement Of Local Residual Stress In Metallic Materials, Elizabeth Anne Burns Jan 2018

Micro-Slotting Technique For Measurement Of Local Residual Stress In Metallic Materials, Elizabeth Anne Burns

Doctoral Dissertations

"Micro-slotting, a micro-scale relaxation residual stress measurement technique, has been shown in recent years to be a reliable method for measuring local residual stresses in metallic materials. This technique employs an SEM-focused ion beam system for milling and imaging, digital image correlation software to track displacements due to residual stress relaxation, and finite element analysis for interpolation of the original local stress state. In this research, a micro-slotting procedure was established using finite element models and was used to obtain sub-surface residual stress measurements on machined and shot peened planar Ti-6Al-4V samples. These measurements were compared to macro-scale XRD residual …

Design And Characterization Of Multi-Spectral Underwater Beam-Port For Pool-Type Research Reactors, Meshari Mesfer Alqahtani

Doctoral Dissertations

“The beam-port is a cardinal facility at research reactors necessary for dry irradiation, testing and measurement experiments. The Missouri University of Science and Technology Reactor (MSTR) is one such reactor with a beam-port. Installation of additional beam-port in such reactor facilities can be prohibitive. A novel remedy to this is an underwater beam-port for pool-type reactors. The design and characterization of a conceptual underwater multi-spectral beam-port for neutron and gamma fluxes were completed for the MSTR. The neutron spectra from the MSTR were simulated using the Monte Carlo N-particle (MCNP). The determined neutron spectra were experimentally validated using SAND-II. The …

Exploring The Use Of A Time-Frequency Domain Technique For The Filtering Of Acoustic Emission/Microseismic Data, Charles Mborah, Maochen Ge, Zhigang Wang Dec 2017

Exploring The Use Of A Time-Frequency Domain Technique For The Filtering Of Acoustic Emission/Microseismic Data, Charles Mborah, Maochen Ge, Zhigang Wang

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of acoustic emission/micro seismic (AE/MS) monitoring systems in mines is greatly impacted by background noise interference. Mine trucks/vehicles, fans, blasting and electrical spikes generate noise which negatively affect AE/MS signal quality. Using such datasets without filtering may lead to inaccurate determination of first arrivals and hence wrong source location. Also, data contaminated with noise makes manual identification and picking of the first arrivals impossible or difficult to achieve. This paper explored the use of stationary discrete wavelet transform as a filter to augment noise reduction on mine AE/MS data. The output of a test run on both noisy …

Infrastructure, Urban Sprawl, And Naturally-Occurring Asbestos: An Ontological Thought Model For Wicked And Saving Technologies, Shane Ray Epting Dec 2017

Infrastructure, Urban Sprawl, And Naturally-Occurring Asbestos: An Ontological Thought Model For Wicked And Saving Technologies, Shane Ray Epting

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, geologists in Southern Nevada discovered new deposits of naturally occurring asbestos and microscopic fibers in rocks and soil. The danger is that inhaling them can lead to mesothelioma. One problem is that this rare cancer often takes decades to manifest. This discovery abruptly stalled a highway project near Las Vegas. Due to this condition, management developed numerous protocols to keep workers safe. Using this case as a "thought model," the author challenges an established way of categorizing kinds of technologies as they relate to the concept of being. In turn, this thought model reveals that climate change alters the …

Deep Convolutional Networks have been very successful in visual recognition tasks recently. Previous works visualize learned features at different layers o help people to understand how CNNs learn visual recognition tasks. However they do not help to accelerate the training process. We use Paraview to provides both qualitative and quantitative visualization that help understand the learning procedure, tune the learning parameters and direct merging and pruning of neural networks.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical resistance monitoring (ERM) has been used to study the effect of the z-binding yarns on the initial electrical resistance (ER) and its change of three architectures of 3D woven carbon fiber composites namely (orthogonal "ORT", layer-to-layer "LTL" and angle interlock "AI") when tested in tension. Specimens are loaded in on-axis "warp" and off-axis "45°" directions. In situ ERM is achieved using the four-probe technique. Monotonic and cyclic "load/unload" tests are performed to investigate the effect of piezo-resistivity and residual plasticity on resistance variation. The resistance increases for the off-axis loaded specimens (∼90%) is found to be higher than that …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Deep Convolutional Networks have been very successful in visual recognition tasks recently. Lots of previous works aimed to help people to get senses of why those biology-inspired networks achieved such good performances. Deconvnet[1], Guided propagation[2] and a comprehensive visualization tool box[3] can help people to see features learned at different layers of the networks. These works in some extent provided understanding and support for the biology origin of how convolutional networks emulate visual recognition tasks. However, due to the complexity of searching in very high dimensional parameter space, the whole training remains in black-boxes. Normally a large network needs weeks …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

New insensitive munitions explosives, including 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), are replacing traditional explosive compounds to protect soldiers and simplify transport logistics. Despite the occupational safety benefits of these new explosives, feasible strategies for cleaning up DNAN from soil and water have not been developed. Here, we evaluate the metabolism of DNAN by the model plant Arabidopsis to determine whether phytoremediation can be used to clean up contaminated sites. Furthermore, we evaluate the role of photodegradation of DNAN and its plant metabolites within Arabidopsis leaves to determine the potential impact of photolysis on the phytoremediation of contaminants. When exposed to DNAN for three …

The extent of damage in Washington, DC, from the 2011 MW 5.8 Mineral, VA, earthquake was surprising for an epicenter 130 km away; U.S. Geological Survey “Did-You-Feel-It” reports suggest that Atlantic Coastal Plain and other unconsolidated sediments amplified ground motions in the city. We measure this amplification relative to bedrock sites using earthquake signals recorded on a temporary seismometer array. The spectral ratios show strong amplification in the 0.7 to 4 Hz frequency range for sites on sediments. This range overlaps with resonant frequencies of buildings in the city as inferred from their heights, suggesting amplification at frequencies to …

Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An increased understanding of the shockwave interaction with a cylindrical structure is the foundation for developing a method to explosively seal a pipe similar to the Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico. Shockwave interactions with a cylindrical structure have been a reoccurring focus of energetics research. Some of the most notable contributions of non-destructive tests are described in ``The Effects of Nuclear Weapons'' (Glasstone, 1962). The work presented by Glasstone examines shockwave interaction from a 20-megaton bomb with a cylindrical structure. However, the data is limited to a peak overpressure of less than 25 psi, requiring several miles …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a humidity-controlled fast integrated mobility spectrometer (HFIMS) for rapid particle hygroscopicity measurements. The HFIMS consists of a differential mobility analyzer (DMA), a relative humidity (RH) control unit and a water-based FIMS (WFIMS) coupled in series. The WFIMS (Pinterich et al., 2017) combines the fast integrated mobility spectrometer (Kulkarni and Wang, 2006a, b) with laminar flow water condensation methodologies (Hering and Stolzenburg, 2005; Spielman et al., 2017). Inside the WFIMS, particles of different electrical mobilities are spatially separated in an electric field, condensationally enlarged and imaged to provide 1 Hz measurements of size distribution spanning a factor of ∼3 …
