Electrodes implanted in the brain or spinal cord trigger the activation of resident astrocytes. In their reactive state, astrocytes surrounding the electrode form a glial scar, compromising the ability of the electrode to interface with the surrounding neural tissue. One approach to reduce the inhibiting scar tissue is to incorporate nanoarchitecture on the surface of the implanted materials to modify the astrocytic response. The incorporated nanoarchitecture changes both the surface characteristics and the material properties of the implant interface. We investigated the response of rat cortical astrocytes to nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) surfaces. Astrocytes were seeded onto nonporous aluminum …

A Group-Based Energy Harvesting Mac Protocol With Ap Scheduling In Machine-To-Machine Networks, Ce Zhou, Yunmin Kim, Tae-Jin Lee

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, an enormous number of devices are subject to the battery limitation. Recently, an attractive energy harvesting technology called energy beamforming has shown great potential to make wireless devices self-powering. Motivated by this, according to the IEEE 802.11ah, a group-based energy harvesting Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol with the strategy of AP scheduling is designed in the paper to address the energy shortage without much reduction in system throughput. In the proposed protocol, nodes first contend for the transmission opportunities, and then data and energy transfer simultaneously by the AP scheduling scheme. Multiple Power Beacons (PBs) are …

Flavin-N5 Covalent Intermediate In A Nonredox Dehalogenation Reaction Catalyzed By An Atypical Flavoenzyme, Yumin Dai, Karina Kizjakina, Ashley C. Campbell, David A. Korasick, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The flavin-dependent enzyme 2-haloacrylate hydratase (2-HAH) catalyzes the conversion of 2-chloroacrylate, a major component in the manufacture of acrylic polymers, to pyruvate. The enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified, and characterized. 2-HAH was shown to be monomeric in solution and contained a non-covalent, yet tightly bound, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). Although the catalyzed reaction was redox-neutral, 2-HAH was active only in the reduced state. A covalent flavin-substrate intermediate, consistent with the flavin-acrylate iminium ion, was trapped with cyanoborohydride and characterized by mass spectrometry. Small-angle X-ray scattering was consistent with 2-HAH belonging to the succinate dehydrogenase/fumarate reductase family of flavoproteins. …

A Higher-Order Ensemble/Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method For The Nonstationary Navier-Stokes Equations, Max Gunzburger, Nan Jiang, Michael Schneier Jan 2018

A Higher-Order Ensemble/Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method For The Nonstationary Navier-Stokes Equations, Max Gunzburger, Nan Jiang, Michael Schneier

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Partial differential equations (PDE) often involve parameters, such as viscosity or density. An analysis of the PDE may involve considering a large range of parameter values, as occurs in uncertainty quantification, control and optimization, inference, and several statistical techniques. The solution for even a single case may be quite expensive; whereas parallel computing may be applied, this reduces the total elapsed time but not the total computational effort. In the case of flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, a method has been devised for computing an ensemble of solutions. Recently, a reduced-order model derived from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) …

Parametrization Of Scale-Invariant Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Scale-Invariant Symmetric Operators, Miron B. Bekker, Martin Bohner, Alexander P. Ugol'nikov, Hristo Voulov

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

On a Hilbert space H, we consider a symmetric scale-invariant operator with equal defect numbers. It is assumed that the operator has at least one scale invariant self-adjoint extension in H. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between (generalized) resolvents of scale-invariant extensions and solutions of some functional equation. Two examples of Dirac-type operators are considered.

Enhancing The Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt's Storage Stability Through The Control Of Its Internal Network Structure, Mohyeldin Ragab, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The current research investigated the effect of the internal network structure developed in the crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) on its storage stability. The authors investigated the influence of asphalt-crumb rubber modifier (CRM) interaction parameters (interaction time, interaction speed, and interaction temperature) on the development of the internal network structure in CRMA. The authors found that the existence of three dimensional (3D) network structures in the CRMA enhanced its storage stability. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy was utilized to determine the nature of CRM components responsible for the development of 3D network structure in the liquid phase of CRMA. This …

2-Chlorofatty Acids: Lipid Mediators Of Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation, Elisa N.D. Palladino, Lalage A. Katunga, Grant R. Kolar, David A. Ford Jan 2018

2-Chlorofatty Acids: Lipid Mediators Of Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation, Elisa N.D. Palladino, Lalage A. Katunga, Grant R. Kolar, David A. Ford

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neutrophils form neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which have been implicated in microcirculatory plugging. NET formation (NETosis) involves the fusion of granule and nuclear contents, which are then released in the extracellular space. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) plays a major role in NETosis leading to the dissociation of DNA from histones. During neutrophil activation, MPO is released and activated to convert hydrogen peroxide and chloride to hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl targets plasmalogens leading to the production of the chlorinated lipids, 2-chlorofatty aldehyde and 2-chlorofatty acid (2-ClFA). Here, we tested the hypothesis that 2-ClFAs are important lipid mediators of NETosis. Human neutrophils treated with …

Environmental Effects On Drosophila Brain Development And Learning, Xia Wang, Amei Amei, J. Steven De Belle, Stephen P. Roberts Jan 2018

Environmental Effects On Drosophila Brain Development And Learning, Xia Wang, Amei Amei, J. Steven De Belle, Stephen P. Roberts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Brain development and behavior are sensitive to a variety of environmental influences including social interactions and physicochemical stressors. Sensory input in situ is a mosaic of both enrichment and stress, yet little is known about how multiple environmental factors interact to affect brain anatomical structures, circuits and cognitive function. In this study, we addressed these issues by testing the individual and combined effects of sub-adult thermal stress, larval density and early-adult living spatial enrichment on brain anatomy and olfactory associative learning in adult Drosophila melanogaster. In response to heat stress, the mushroom bodies (MBs) were the most volumetrically impaired among …

A Rupture Limit Equation For Pre-Loaded Composite Plates, William P. Schonberg Jan 2018

A Rupture Limit Equation For Pre-Loaded Composite Plates, William P. Schonberg

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites offer inherent advantages over traditional metallic materials in a number of different ways; however, these materials are also highly susceptible to impact damage. In this paper, we explore the response of FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) composites under impact conditions that could result in their rupture or catastrophic failure. The work performed was aimed at developing a general, data-driven equation for initially-stressed, flat, composite plates that would differentiate between impact conditions that would result in only a hole or crack and those which would cause catastrophic plate failure or rupture. If this equation were to be subsequently shown …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination of buildings continues to pose an exposure threat, even decades after their application in the form of calks and other building materials. In this research, we investigate the ability of clothing to sorb PCBs from contaminated air and thereby influence exposure. The equilibrium concentration of PCB-28 and PCB-52 was quantified for nine used clothing fabrics exposed for 56 days to air in a Danish apartment contaminated with PCBs. Fabric materials included pure materials such as cotton and polyester, or blends of polyester, cotton, viscose/rayon, and/or elastane. Air concentrations were fairly stable over the experimental period, with …

Testing And Evaluation Of Shale Stability For Zubair Shale Formation, Ahmed K. Abbas, Ralph E. Flori, Ahmed Al-Anssari, Mortadha Alsaba Jan 2018

Testing And Evaluation Of Shale Stability For Zubair Shale Formation, Ahmed K. Abbas, Ralph E. Flori, Ahmed Al-Anssari, Mortadha Alsaba

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Zubair Formation consists of approximately 55% shale, which causes almost 70% of wellbore problems due to incompatibilities of drilling fluids and shale formations. The most common and effective solution to shale instability is through the design and selection of drilling fluids. Understanding the interaction between drilling fluids and shale has been a challenge due to the complexity of both physical and chemical variations in shale formations. This paper presents some of the important laboratory and well-site testing techniques that are often used by mud engineers for characterizing and remediating drilling fluids and shale interaction. Well-preserved shale samples were analyzed to …

Mixed-Criticality Real-Time Task Scheduling With Graceful Degradation, Samsil Arefin Jan 2018

Mixed-Criticality Real-Time Task Scheduling With Graceful Degradation, Samsil Arefin

Masters Theses

”The mixed-criticality real-time systems implement functionalities of different degrees of importance (or criticalities) upon a shared platform. In traditional mixed-criticality systems, under a hi mode switch, no guaranteed service is provided to lo-criticality tasks. After a mode switch, only hi-criticality tasks are considered for execution while no guarantee is made to the lo-criticality tasks. However, with careful optimistic design, a certain degree of service guarantee can be provided to lo-criticality tasks upon a mode switch. This concept is broadly known as graceful degradation. Guaranteed graceful degradation provides a better quality of service as well as it utilizes the system resource …
