Characterizing The Influence Of Matrix Ductility On Damage Phenomenology In Continuous Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Laminates Undergoing Quasi-Static Indentation, A. Yudhanto, H. Wafai, G. Lubineau, R. Yaldiz, N. Verghese Feb 2018

Characterizing The Influence Of Matrix Ductility On Damage Phenomenology In Continuous Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Laminates Undergoing Quasi-Static Indentation, A. Yudhanto, H. Wafai, G. Lubineau, R. Yaldiz, N. Verghese

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of thermoplastic matrix was known to improve the impact properties of laminated composites. However, different ductility levels can exist in a single family of thermoplastic matrix, and this may consequently modify the damage phenomenology of thermoplastic composites. This paper focuses on the effect of matrix ductility on the out-of-plane properties of thermoplastic composites, which was studied through quasi-static indentation (QSI) test that may represent impact problem albeit the speed difference. We evaluated continuous glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene thermoplastic composites (GFPP), and selected homopolymer PP and copolymer PP that represent ductile and less ductile matrices, respectively. Several cross-ply laminates were …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, We Study Evaporation and Condensation of Fluid Ar in the Presence of a Non-Condensable Ne Gas in a Nanochannel. the Evaporation and Condensation Are Driven by the Temperature Difference, ΔTL, between the Evaporating and Condensing Liquid Surfaces. the Steady-State Evaporation and Condensation Fluxes (JMD) Are Also Affected by the Ne Concentration, ΡNe, and the Nanochannel Length. We Find that Across a Wide Range of ΔTL and ΡNe, JMD is in Good Agreement with the Prediction from Stefan's Law and from Schrage Relationships. Furthermore, for ΔTL Less Than ∼20% of the Absolute Average Temperature, We Find that …

Thermal Analysis Of Cold-Formed Steel Wall Assemblies, American Iron And Steel Institute Feb 2018

Thermal Analysis Of Cold-Formed Steel Wall Assemblies, American Iron And Steel Institute

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

For building envelope assemblies, thermal bridging through conductive components can greatly reduce the overall thermal resistance of that assembly. Steel stud assemblies are particularly susceptible to thermal bridging due to the high thermal conductivity of the steel components. Being able to accurately capture these impacts can provide designers with more realistic information to drive better design decisions in regards to building thermal performance and building energy use.

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is developing a simplified calculation methodology for determining the thermal performance of generic steel stud assemblies that includes the impacts of thermal bridging. While hot-box testing …

Approximation Degree Of Durrmeyer-Bézier Type Operators, Purshottam N. Agrawal, Serkan Araci, Martin Bohner, Kumari Lipi Feb 2018

Approximation Degree Of Durrmeyer-Bézier Type Operators, Purshottam N. Agrawal, Serkan Araci, Martin Bohner, Kumari Lipi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, a mixed hybrid operator, generalizing the well-known Phillips operators and Baskakov-Szász type operators, was introduced. In this paper, we study Bézier variant of these new operators. We investigate the degree of approximation of these operators by means of the Lipschitz class function, the modulus of continuity, and a weighted space. We study a direct approximation theorem by means of the unified Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness. Furthermore, the rate of convergence for functions having derivatives of bounded variation is discussed.

Electro-Kinetic Remediation Processes -- A Brief Overview And Selected Applications, Chandra Mouli Tummala, Sanjay Tewari Feb 2018

Electro-Kinetic Remediation Processes -- A Brief Overview And Selected Applications, Chandra Mouli Tummala, Sanjay Tewari

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this growing world the need for in-situ remediation has grown importance for various reasons. In-situ remediation is the application of remediation in the subsurface – as compared to ex-situ remediation, which applies to media readily accessible above ground and many times involves excavation and disruption of the soil. In-situ remediation may be applied in the unsaturated/vadoze zone or in saturated soils and groundwater. Anthropogenic activities (municipal and industrial) have resulted in contamination in subsurface soil/water environment. There are several in-situ remediation methods for example bio-remediation, thermal desorption, soil vapor extraction, and soil flushing just to name a few.

On The Soil Water Characteristic Curves Of Poorly Graded Granular Materials In Aqueous Polymer Solutions, Junnan Cao, Jongwon Jung, Xiaoyu Song, Bate Bate

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tempe cell with a self-developed horizontal hanging column attachment was used to measure the soil water characteristic curves (SWCCs) of granular materials initially saturated with either water or polymer solutions. For SWCCs of six poorly graded granular materials with d50 ranging from 0.04 to 0.7 mm in water, it was found that (1) as grain size decreases, air entry value increases, and matric suction (ψ) for the funicular and pendular regimes increases and that (2) steep desaturation curves over narrow ψ range in the funicular regime were observed. Air entry values obtained from the fitting parameter 1/α in van Genuchten …

Phytoforensics: Trees As Bioindicators Of Potential Indoor Exposure Via Vapor Intrusion, Jordan L. Wilson, V. A. Samaranayake, Matt A. Limmer, Joel Gerard Burken

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via vapor intrusion (VI) is an emerging public health concern with notable detrimental impacts on public health. Phytoforensics, plant sampling to semi-quantitatively delineate subsurface contamination, provides a potential non-invasive screening approach to detect VI potential, and plant sampling is effective and also time- and cost-efficient. Existing VI assessment methods are time- and resource-intensive, invasive, and require access into residential and commercial buildings to drill holes through basement slabs to install sampling ports or require substantial equipment to install groundwater or soil vapor sampling outside the home. Tree-core samples collected in 2 days at …

Osteoporosis is a common disease characterized by reduced bone mass and an increased risk of fragility fractures. Low bone mineral density is known to significantly increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures; however, the majority of non-traumatic fractures occur in individuals with a bone mineral density too high to be classified as osteoporotic. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate aspects of bone health, other than bone mass, that can predict the risk of fracture. Here, we successfully predicted association between bone collagen and nail keratin in relation to bone loss due to oestrogen deficiency using Raman spectroscopy. Raman signal …

Fractional Brownian Motion With A Reflecting Wall, Alexander H. O. Wada, Thomas Vojta Feb 2018

Fractional Brownian Motion With A Reflecting Wall, Alexander H. O. Wada, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fractional Brownian motion, a stochastic process with long-time correlations between its increments, is a prototypical model for anomalous diffusion. We analyze fractional Brownian motion in the presence of a reflecting wall by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Whereas the mean-square displacement of the particle shows the expected anomalous diffusion behavior (x2) ~ tα, the interplay between the geometric confinement and the long-time memory leads to a highly non-Gaussian probability density function with a power-law singularity at the barrier. In the superdiffusive case α > 1, the particles accumulate at the barrier leading to a divergence of the …

Gw170817: Implications For The Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background From Compact Binary Coalescences, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the event GW170817, the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star component will add to the contribution from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. In the Advanced LIGO-Virgo frequency band most sensitive to stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict a total astrophysical background with amplitude ΩGW( …

Focus Energy Determination Of Mining Microseisms Using Residual Seismic Wave Attenuation In Deep Coal Mining, Mingwei Zhang, Shengdong Liu, Shuzhao Chen, Yanlong Chen, Guang Xu, Deyu Qian

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Based on the energy attenuation characteristics of residual wave in deep rock, a method was developed to determine the microseismic focus energy. Differential energy loss in infinitesimal spreading distance is logically deduced, upon which energy attenuation equation was established. With a logarithmic transformation, a linear relation of the residual seismic energy with distance is formulated. Its intercept was used to determine the microseismic focus energy. The result is compared with that determined by the energy density method. The reliability of the determined focus energy and the impact of the built-in velocity threshold on the residual wave energy computation are discussed. …

Structural isomers, molecules having the same chemical formula but with atoms bonded in different order, are hard to identify using conventional spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. They exhibit virtually indistinguishable mass spectra when ionized by electrons. Laser mass spectrometry based on photoionization of the isomers has emerged as a promising alternative but requires shaped ultrafast laser pulses. Here we use transform limited femtosecond pulses to distinguish the isomers using two methods. First, we probe doubly charged parent ions with circularly polarized light. We show that the yield of doubly charged ortho-xylene decreases while para-xylene increases over a range of laser intensities …

Probing Changes In Tilt Angle With 20 Nanoradian Resolution Using An Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer-Based Optical Fiber Inclinometer, Yiyang Zhuang, Yizheng Chen, Chen Zhu, Rex E. Gerald Ii, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we introduce and demonstrate a novel optical fiber extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) for tilt measurements with 20 nrad resolution. Compared with inline optical fiber inclinometers, an extrinsic sensing structure is used in the inclinometer reported herein. Our design greatly improves on the tilt angle resolution, the temperature stability, and the mechanical robustness of inclinometers with advanced designs. An EFPI cavity, which is formed between endfaces of a suspended rectangular mass block and a fixed optical fiber, is packaged inside a rectangular container box with an oscillation dampening mechanism. Importantly, the two reflectors of the EFPI sensor remain …

Camks Support Development Of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Xunlei Kang, Jie Huang Feb 2018

Camks Support Development Of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Xunlei Kang, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: We recently identified the human leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B2 (LILRB2) and its mouse ortholog-paired Ig-like receptor (PirB) as receptors for several angiopoietin-like proteins (Angptls). We also demonstrated that PirB is important for the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but exactly how an inhibitory receptor such as PirB can support cancer development is intriguing. Results: Here, we showed that the activation of Ca (2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CAMKs) is coupled with PirB signaling in AML cells. High expression of CAMKs is associated with a poor overall survival probability in patients with AML. Knockdown of CAMKI or CAMKIV decreased human acute …

Sepsis is a complex clinical syndrome that features excessive release of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators that could lead to organ dysfunction. Despite different treatment and management options, sepsis associated high morbidity and mortality rates remain. This has prompted intensive research into alternative therapeutic approaches such as targeted removal of sepsis related molecules using extracorporeal hemoperfusion. In this study, we explore the use of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) as low-cost alternative hemosorbents for rapid removal of a broad spectrum of proinflammatory cytokine markers. Firstly, the physical characteristics, cytotoxicity, and cytokine marker adsorption profile of GNP were assessed. The results not only …

Seismic Performance Of Hollow-Core Hc-Fcs Columns Having Inner Steel Tube With High Diameter To Thickness Ratio, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper experimentally investigates the seismic behavior of a large-scale hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer-concrete-steel HC-FCS column under seismic cyclic loading. The HC-FCS column consisted of a concrete shell sandwiched between an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube. The FRP tube provides continuous confinement for the concrete shell along the height of the column while the steel tube provides the required flexural strength. The tested column has an inner steel tube that had a diameter-to-thickness ratio (Di/t) (of 254. The seismic performance of the precast HC-FCS column was compared to that of HC-FCS column having(Di …

Spatial Delineation Of Corrosion Zones For Metal Culverts Based On Coastal Louisiana Soil Characteristics, Sanjay Tewari, Francis Manning

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Corrosion of metal pipes used as culverts is a problem that affect many agencies directly involved in designing and maintaining these culverts. The corrosive environment of soil types found in a region could vary in a significant way (mildly corrosive to extremely corrosive) based on soil characteristics. Environmental conditions such as high water table, acidity and presence of various salts could make a soil corrosive to metal pipes. In this article, authors have applied a methodology of processing readily available soil data such as spatial distribution of soil types and soil characteristics (e.g. pH and conductivity) in delineating spatial corrosion …
