The microscopic details of the suppression of antiferromagnetic order in the Kondo-lattice series Ce1-xLaxCu2Ge2 due to nonmagnetic dilution by La are revealed through neutron diffraction results for x = 0.20, 0.40, 0.75, and 0.85. Magnetic Bragg peaks are found for 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.75, and both the Néel temperature TN and the ordered magnetic moment per Ce μ linearly decrease with increasing x. The reduction in μ points to strong hybridization of the increasingly diluted Ce 4f electrons, and we find a remarkable quadratic dependence of μ on the Kondo-coherence temperature. We …

Systems and methods for detecting a subsurface cavity. A source applies a force to ground under inspection and a plurality of sensors coupled to the ground detect resulting surface waves. A processor is configured to extract phase and frequency components of the acquired seismic data, identify a phase shift in surface waves in the ground under inspection based on the extracted phase and frequency components, and determine one or more physical characteristics of a subsurface cavity based on the identified phase shift

Rifampicin monooxygenase (RIFMO) decreases the potency of rifampicin (RIF) by converting it to oxidative products. Further decomposition of RIF has been observed in bacteria producing RIFMO and contributes to RIFMO-mediated drug resistance. Here we report the first crystal structure of RIFMO in complex with the hydroxylated RIF product. The 2.10 Å resolution structure reveals a breach of the ansa aliphatic chain of RIF between naphthoquinone C2 and amide N1. Our data suggest that RIFMO catalyzes the hydroxylation of RIF at the C2 atom followed by cleavage of the ansa linkage, which leads to inactivation of the antibiotic by preventing key …

In all known fermionic superfluids, Cooper pairs are composed of spin-1/2 quasi-particles that pair to form either spin-singlet or spin-triplet bound States. The "spin" of a Bloch electron, however, is fixed by the symmetries of the crystal and the atomic orbitals from which it is derived and, in some cases, can behave as if it were a spin-3/2 particle. The superconducting state of such a system allows pairing beyond spin-triplet, with higher spin quasi-particles combining to form quintet or septet pairs. We report evidence of unconventional superconductivity emerging from a spin-3/2 quasi-particle electronic structure in the half-Heusler semimetal YPtBi, a …

An investigation was performed to measure the efficiency of solid alumina inclusion removal by filtration during casting. A mold design was developed using modeling software to produce two castings that fill simultaneously, one with a filter and the other without a filter. The design avoided vortex formation and thus air entrainment, which helped to avoid reoxidation inside the mold cavity. Samples from these castings were analyzed utilizing an SEM/EDS system with automated feature analysis (AFA) to measure the efficiency of inclusion removal using a 20 ppi zirconia foam filter. This study also documents the occurrence of inclusion flotation and agglomeration …

This exploratory study examines the current use of instructional technology, and assistive technologies for support of individuals with learning disabilities as well as other disabilities in New York State.
The researchers used SurveyMonkey and postings on social media websites for various professional organizations to solicit responses to a questionnaire from individuals working with or caring for persons with disabilities. A small sample of responses (N=122) revealed barriers to the use of technology, as well as the preferred type and most convenient for persons with disabilities. School districts may want to use this survey with students, parents and community members.

A Straightforward Updating Criterion For 2-D/3-D Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain Method Controlling Comparative Error, Wending Mai, Ping Li, C. G. Li, Ming Jiang, Wenqu Hao, Lijun Jiang, Jun Hu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The 2-D/3-D hybrid discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method is efficient to deal with structures that contain elements capable of 2-D simplification. To separate 2-D elements from 3-D ones, a criterion for approximation error manipulation is required. However, in the latest reported technique, this kind of criterion is derived from the causality principle and the Courant-Freidrichs-Lewy constraint, and thus is indirect and inessential to 2-D simplification. As a result, some elements capable of 2-D simplification are unnecessarily flagged as 3-D ones, deteriorating efficiency dramatically. Moreover, controlling absolute error, the traditional criterion is not flexible for structures with complex mode distribution. In …

To improve the prevention of spontaneous coal combustion, reduced iron powder and other ingredients should be added together to form an iron-based deoxidizing inhibitor, with the dual effect of oxygen consumption and inhibition. The oxygen consumption rate of the inhibitor was studied through experiments. According to the theory of coordination resistance, the coordination resistance of Fe3+ was studied via the density functional method. Subsequently, a comparative experiment of the effects on spontaneous coal combustion was conducted. The research shows that several kinds of common resistance agents that are added to the reduced iron powder can consume oxygen. However, the …

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) particularly non-thermal plasmas based on electrical discharges have been widely investigated for water and wastewater treatment. Dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) generate large amounts of selective and non-selective reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as ozone, hydrogen peroxide, atomic oxygen, superoxide molecular anions and hydroxyl radicals, having been proved to be efficient for water decontamination among various forms of electrical discharge systems. The detection and quantification methods of these oxygen species in non-thermal plasmas have been reviewed. However, their application in dielectric barrier discharge has not been well studied. It is therefore imperative to summarize the various detection …
