Total Automation: The Possibility Of Lights-Out Manufacturing In The Near Future, Noah K. Lee May 2018

Total Automation: The Possibility Of Lights-Out Manufacturing In The Near Future, Noah K. Lee

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

As technology advances, fully automated manufacturing processes become more and more feasible as the norm; that is, the advantages of the technology outweigh the disadvantages for use by the majority of manufacturers. Many in the manufacturing industry have spoken about the dangers technological advancements could pose to the economy and employment in the future. This prompts the question: Could fully automated processes become the norm in the next five to ten years? The answer to this question affects the livelihood of manufacturing workers, as stories of machines replacing humans fill the news. This review considers scholarly and news articles covering …

Overpriced And Under Regulated: A Crackdown On Pharmaceutical Monopolization And Malfeasance, Taryn Dewey May 2018

Overpriced And Under Regulated: A Crackdown On Pharmaceutical Monopolization And Malfeasance, Taryn Dewey

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

As the price of medication skyrockets in 2017, investigating large pharmaceutical companies’ behavior is on the forefront of lowering the cost of medicine. With the help of Supreme Court rulings and patent layering, these companies have been able to take advantage of Food and Drug Administration regulations regarding market exclusivity and in turn are able to control drug costs and manufacturing. This control has caused a series of price gouges and has led to people not being able to afford the medication they require. Using government records, lawsuits, investigative reports, scholarly journals, and proxy statements, this study evaluated the current …

Athletic Turf As A Risk To Public Health, Darius Mann May 2018

Athletic Turf As A Risk To Public Health, Darius Mann

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

In recent years, synthetic turf playing surfaces have been rapidly replacing natural grass fields across the country. This includes middle school and high school sports fields and parks, meaning children and adolescents are the primary age groups being exposed to any potential adverse effects of these surfaces. With any technology that affects children, it is critical that the risks that the technology potentially poses to them be thoroughly explored and understood. A college soccer coach by the name of Amy Griffin brought the safety concerns over these turf fields to the minds of the American public when she noticed an …

The Dangers Of Human-Like Bias In Machine-Learning Algorithms, Daniel James Fuchs May 2018

The Dangers Of Human-Like Bias In Machine-Learning Algorithms, Daniel James Fuchs

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

Machine learning algorithms (MLAGs), frequently used in artificial intelligence (AI), rely on using patterns across sets of data to derive decision-making intelligence. In recent years, as society continues to give increasing authority to ML-driven AIs, these algorithms have demonstrated the ability to take on human-like discriminatory biases. Microsoft's "Tay," for example, a social media-based chatbot, went from resembling a normal teenage girl to displaying racist and sexist attitudes in a mere sixteen hours). Tay and many other ML-driven implementations across a wide variety of fields have replicated numerous human biases. In most cases, these human-like biases originated due to improper …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Porous-wall hollow glass microspheres (PWHGMs) are a novel form of glass materials that consist of 1-μm-thick porous silica shells, 20-100 μm in diameter, with a hollow cavity in the center. Utilizing the central cavity for material storage and the porous walls for controlled release is a unique combination that renders PWHGMs a superior vehicle for targeted drug delivery. In this study, NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize PWHGMs for the first time. A vacuum-based loading system was developed to load PWHGMs with various compounds followed by a washing procedure that uses solvents immiscible with the target material. Immiscible binary model …

Flexural Rigidity Evaluation Of Seismic Performance Of Hollow-Core Composite Bridge Columns, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady May 2018

Flexural Rigidity Evaluation Of Seismic Performance Of Hollow-Core Composite Bridge Columns, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates experimentally the seismic behavior of two hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer-concrete-steel HC-FCS columns under cyclic loading as a cantilever. The typical precast HC-FCS member consists of a concrete wall sandwiched between an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube. The FRP tube provides continuous confinement for the concrete wall along the height of the column. Five large-scale HC-FCS columns were investigated during this study to estimate the effective flexural (which is an important factor to define the buckling capacity and deflection of such columns) and the effective structural stiffness of the composite columns. These columns have …

A Uniform Strain Transfer Scheme For Accurate Distributed Optical Fiber Strain Measurements In Civil Structures, Yang Du, Yizheng Chen, Yiyang Zhuang, Chen Zhu, Rex E. Gerald Ii, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a screw-like package design for an embeddable distributed optical fiber strain sensor for civil engineering applications. The screw-like structure is the exterior support for an optical fiber sensor. The bare optical fiber is embedded and secured in a longitudinal groove of the screw-like package using a rigid adhesive. Our packaging scheme prevents damage to the bare optical fiber and ensures that the packaged sensor is accurately and optimally sensing strain fields in civil structures. Moreover, our screw-like design has an equal area in a cross-section perpendicular to and along the screw axis, so strain field distributions are metered …

Analytical Evaluation Of Partial Elements Using A Retarded Taylor Series Expansion Of The Green's Function, Luigi Lombardi, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The computation of the fundamental magnetic and electric field coupling terms for the full-wave partial element equivalent circuit method is time consuming for large problems. Extensive numerical integration is required for the computation of four-to-six-fold integration of the partial element coefficients. In this paper, we present new full-wave analytical formulas for their computation, which are based on several different Taylor series expansion approaches for the case of rectangular elementary volumes and surfaces.

Elucidating The Effect Of Water-To-Cement Ratio On The Hydration Mechanisms Of Cement, Aida Margarita Ley-Hernandez, Jonathan Lapeyre, Rachel Cook, Aditya Kumar, Dimitri Feys May 2018

Elucidating The Effect Of Water-To-Cement Ratio On The Hydration Mechanisms Of Cement, Aida Margarita Ley-Hernandez, Jonathan Lapeyre, Rachel Cook, Aditya Kumar, Dimitri Feys

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The hydration of cement is often modeled as a phase boundary nucleation and growth (pBNG) process. Classical pBNG models, based on the use of isotropic and constant growth rate of the main hydrate, that is, calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H), are unable to explain the lack of any significant effect of the water-to-cement (w/c) ratio on the hydration kinetics of cement. This paper presents a modified form of the pBNG model, in which the anisotropic growth of C-S-H is allowed to vary in relation to the nonlinear evolution of its supersaturation in solution. Results show that once the supercritical C-S-H nuclei form, their …

Corrosion Resistance Of Pipeline Steel With Damaged Enamel Coating And Cathodic Protection, Liang Fan, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Genda Chen, Michael L. Koenigstein

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the first report on the corrosion resistance of pipeline steel with damaged enamel coating and cathodic protection in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. In particular, dual cells are set up to separate the solution in contact with the damaged and intact enamel coating areas, to produce a local corrosion resistance measurement for the first time. Enamel-coated steel samples, with two levels of cathodic protection, are tested to investigate their impedance by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and their cathodic current demand by a potentiostatic test. Due to its glass transition temperature, the enamel-coated pipeline can be operated on …

Search For Tensor, Vector, And Scalar Polarizations In The Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically polarized gravitational waves. We find …

Half-Mode Cavity-Based Planar Filtering Antenna With Controllable Transmission Zeroes, Kirti Dhwaj, Joshua M. Kovitz, Haozhan Tian, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh May 2018

Half-Mode Cavity-Based Planar Filtering Antenna With Controllable Transmission Zeroes, Kirti Dhwaj, Joshua M. Kovitz, Haozhan Tian, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Atwo-pole half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) cavity-based filtering antenna is presented. The HMSIW cavity is used as a radiating resonator with a conventional substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity functioning as a high- Q resonator of the filter, leading to its compact size. The concept of source-load coupling is introduced for filtering antennas, which allows for the presence of two controllable transmission zeroes (TZs) in the frequency response of proposed design. This is accomplished by using electric coupling between two resonator cavities and a combination of microstrip/coaxial line to feed the antenna. The single-layer printed circuit board structure provides a broadside …

Research Of A Non-Linearity Control Algorithm For Uav Target Tracking Based On Fuzzy Logic Systems, Chaoying Pei, Jingjuan Zhang, Xueyun Wang, Qian Zhang May 2018

Research Of A Non-Linearity Control Algorithm For Uav Target Tracking Based On Fuzzy Logic Systems, Chaoying Pei, Jingjuan Zhang, Xueyun Wang, Qian Zhang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Target tracking is one of the most widely used applications of UAVs and visual based tracking is the main method for non-cooperative tracking. In non-cooperative tracking missions, the UAV circles around the target and the gimbal rotates to keep the optic axis of the onboard camera pointing to the target. Compared with the biaxial gimbal, the single-axis gimbal system consists of only one torque motor, forming a great lightweight sensor suite, which also increases the requirement of the control accuracy. In the process of tracking moving target using a UAV with single-axis gimbal, there are still several challenges: (1) The …

Constraints On Cosmic Strings Using Data From The First Advanced Ligo Observing Run, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cosmic strings are topological defects which can be formed in grand unified theory scale phase transitions in the early universe. They are also predicted to form in the context of string theory. The main mechanism for a network of Nambu-Goto cosmic strings to lose energy is through the production of loops and the subsequent emission of gravitational waves, thus offering an experimental signature for the existence of cosmic strings. Here we report on the analysis conducted to specifically search for gravitational-wave bursts from cosmic string loops in the data of Advanced LIGO 2015-2016 observing run (O1). No evidence of such …

Full Band All-Sky Search For Periodic Gravitational Waves In The O1 Ligo Data, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on a new all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 475-2000 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0,+0.1] x 10-8 Hz/s. Potential signals could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run O1. No gravitational-wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. For completeness, results from the separately published low-frequency search 20-475 Hz are included as well. Our lowest upper limit on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude …

Characteristics Of The Mantle Flow System Beneath The Indochina Peninsula Revealed By Teleseismic Shear Wave Splitting Analysis, Youqiang Yu, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Ting Yang, Mei Xue, Khanh Phon Le, Jinyao Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Numerous geoscientific investigations have been conducted on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas for understanding crustal and mantle deformation associated with the indentation of the Indian Plate into Eurasia. A number of key issues, such as the causes of a sudden change of fast polarization orientations from N-S to almost E-W at approximately 26°N revealed by shear wave splitting (SWS) studies, and the geodynamic implications of the transition still remain enigmatic, partially due to the lack of sufficient SWS measurements on the Indochina Peninsula. Here we employ the SWS technique to systematically illuminate upper mantle anisotropy beneath the Indochina …

Comparison Between Cold/Hot Smart Water Flooding In Sandstone Reservoirs, Hasan N. Al-Saedi, Ariel Williams, Ralph E. Flori

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The incremental oil recovery has been investigated and approved by many laboratory and field projects using water flooding in tertiary stage. The salinity of the injected water is an important factor observed by many researchers. The more salinity decreases the more oil recovery obtained. The investigations on the hot low salinity water flooding have been conducted by many researchers and they found out that it is useful for increasing oil recovery especially heavy oil due to reducing oil viscosity and make it easy to produce to the surface. The thermal expansion of water plays an important role in the incremental …

Dark-Bright Soliton Pairs: Bifurcations And Collisions, Garyfallia C. Katsimiga, P. G. Kevrekidis, B. Prinari, G. Biondini, P. Schmelcher Apr 2018

Dark-Bright Soliton Pairs: Bifurcations And Collisions, Garyfallia C. Katsimiga, P. G. Kevrekidis, B. Prinari, G. Biondini, P. Schmelcher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The statics, stability, and dynamical properties of dark-bright soliton pairs are investigated here, motivated by applications in a homogeneous two-component repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. One of the intraspecies interaction coefficients is used as the relevant parameter controlling the deviation from the integrable Manakov limit. Two different families of stationary states are identified consisting of dark-bright solitons that are either antisymmetric (out-of-phase) or asymmetric (mass imbalanced) with respect to their bright soliton. Both of the above dark-bright configurations coexist at the integrable limit of equal intra and interspecies repulsions and are degenerate in that limit. However, they are found to bifurcate …

Model-Assisted Probability Of Detection Of Flaws In Aluminum Blocks Using Polynomial Chaos Expansions, Xiaosong Du, Leifur Leifsson, Robert Grandin, William Meeker, Ronald Roberts, Jiming Song

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Probability of detection (POD) is widely used for measuring reliability of nondestructive testing (NDT) systems. Typically, POD is determined experimentally, while it can be enhanced by utilizing physics-based computational models in combination with model-assisted POD (MAPOD) methods. With the development of advanced physics-based methods, such as ultrasonic NDT testing, the empirical information, needed for POD methods, can be reduced. However, performing accurate numerical simulations can be prohibitively time-consuming, especially as part of stochastic analysis. In this work, stochastic surrogate models for computational physics-based measurement simulations are developed for cost savings of MAPOD methods while simultaneously ensuring sufficient accuracy. The stochastic …

Novel Regulator Of Vasopressin Secretion: Phoenixin, Silvia Gasparini, Lauren M. Stein, Spencer P. Loewen, Christopher J. Haddock, Jasmine Soo, Alastair V. Ferguson, Grant R. Kolar, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson Apr 2018

Novel Regulator Of Vasopressin Secretion: Phoenixin, Silvia Gasparini, Lauren M. Stein, Spencer P. Loewen, Christopher J. Haddock, Jasmine Soo, Alastair V. Ferguson, Grant R. Kolar, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The newly described hypothalamic peptide, phoenixin, is produced in the hypothalamus and adenohypophysis, where it acts to control reproductive hormone secretion. Both phoenixin and its receptor GPR173 are expressed in the hypothalamic supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular (PVN) nuclei, suggesting additional, nonreproductive effects of the peptide to control vasopressin (AVP) or oxytocin (OT) secretion. Hypothalamo-neurohypophysial explants released AVP but not OT in response to phoenixin. Intracerebroventricular administration of phoenixin into conscious, unrestrained male and female rats significantly increased circulating AVP, but not OT, levels in plasma, and it increased immediate early gene expression in the supraoptic nuclei of male rats. Bath …
