Dual-Band Filtering Antenna With Novel Transmission Zero Characteristics, Kirti Dhwaj, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh Dec 2018

Dual-Band Filtering Antenna With Novel Transmission Zero Characteristics, Kirti Dhwaj, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A single-layer two-pole dual-band filtering antenna (DBFA) with orthogonal polarizations in the two bands is presented in this letter. The DBFA is based on a common dual-mode T-shaped resonator (TR). The two modes of the common resonator each couple to one of the two orthogonally placed patches, resulting in required radiation. The TR is responsible for generation of three transmission zeroes (TZs) in frequency response corresponding to each polarization at the broadside: two of them being intrinsic TZs due to the TR and the third caused by far field interference of TR's radiation with that of the patch. The low …

Bounding The Moment Deficit Rate On Crustal Faults Using Geodetic Data: Application To Southern California, Jeremy Maurer, Kaj Johnson, Paul Segall Dec 2018

Bounding The Moment Deficit Rate On Crustal Faults Using Geodetic Data: Application To Southern California, Jeremy Maurer, Kaj Johnson, Paul Segall

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interseismic moment deficit rate (MDR) constrains the potential for future moment release in earthquakes. Published estimates of the geodetic MDR in Southern California vary by a factor of 3 depending on the type of forward model, method of estimation, and data quality. It is our aim to determine to what degree these discrepancies may be explained by quantifying the uncertainty for a given class of forward models, accounting for data errors and limited model resolution. We apply a new method, the Constrained Optimization Bounding Estimator, to bound the MDR in Southern California using geodetic data and an elastic plate-block …

Application Of A Hygroscopicity Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer For Characterizing Pm Emissions In Exhaust Plumes From An Aircraft Engine Burning Conventional And Alternative Fuels, Max B. Trueblood, Prem Lobo, Donald E. Hagen, Steven C. Achterberg, Wenyan Liu, Philip D. Whitefield

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the last several decades, significant efforts have been directed toward better understanding the gaseous and particulate matter (PM) emissions from aircraft gas turbine engines. However, limited information is available on the hygroscopic properties of aircraft engine PM emissions which play an important role in the water absorption, airborne lifetime, obscuring effect, and detrimental health effects of these particles. This paper reports the description and detailed labbased performance evaluation of a robust hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) in terms of hygroscopic properties such as growth factor (GF) and the hygroscopicity parameter (κ). The HTDMA system was subsequently deployed during …

Macro-/Micro-Controlled 3d Lithium-Ion Batteries Via Additive Manufacturing And Electric Field Processing, Jie Li, Xinhua Liang, Frank W. Liou, Jonghyun Park

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a new concept for making battery electrodes that can simultaneously control macro-/micro-structures and help address current energy storage technology gaps and future energy storage requirements. Modern batteries are fabricated in the form of laminated structures that are composed of randomly mixed constituent materials. This randomness in conventional methods can provide a possibility of developing new breakthrough processing techniques to build well-organized structures that can improve battery performance. In the proposed processing, an electric field (EF) controls the microstructures of manganese-based electrodes, while additive manufacturing controls macro-3D structures and the integration of both scales. The synergistic control of …

Superelastic And Ph-Responsive Degradable Dendrimer Cryogels Prepared By Cryo-Aza-Michael Addition Reaction, Juan Wang, Hu Yang Dec 2018

Superelastic And Ph-Responsive Degradable Dendrimer Cryogels Prepared By Cryo-Aza-Michael Addition Reaction, Juan Wang, Hu Yang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dendrimers exhibit super atomistic features by virtue of their well-defined discrete quantized nanoscale structures. Here, we show that hyperbranched amine-terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G4.0 reacts with linear polyethylene glycol (PEG) diacrylate (575 g/mol) via the aza-Michael addition reaction at a subzero temperature (-20 °C), namely cryo-aza-Michael addition, to form a macroporous superelastic network, i.e., dendrimer cryogel. Dendrimer cryogels exhibit biologically relevant Young's modulus, high compression elasticity and super resilience at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the dendrimer cryogels exhibit excellent rebound performance and do not show significant stress relaxation under cyclic deformation over a wide temperature range (-80 to 100 °C). The …

Experimental Study On The Influence Of Slickwater On Shale Permeability, Zhonghua Liu, Baojun Bai, Zheyu Zhang, Jing Tang, Shunpeng Zeng, Xiaogang Li

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are two diametrically opposite views of the influence of slickwater on shale permeability among scholars at home and abroad. We used the shale outcrops rock samples from the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Sichuan Basin. The permeability of these dry samples before and after immersion in different solution systems were tested by pulse attenuation method. The experimental results show that the impregnation of different slickwater components and standard salt solution can promote the increase of the permeability of shale samples. The stress sensitivity of shale samples after liquid immersion is medium weak to weak. The sample stress sensitivity is …

Cell For Flow Battery, Jonghyun Park, Mohammed Abdulkhabeer Al-Yasiri Nov 2018

Cell For Flow Battery, Jonghyun Park, Mohammed Abdulkhabeer Al-Yasiri

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A reaction cell for a flow battery having flow channels positioned within a recess of a non-porous and non-brittle housing that is also a dielectric. Positioning the flow channels within the recess eliminates the need for end plates, gaskets, and insulators of conventional designs. A current collector and an electrode within the recess have areas approximately equal to the area of the recess such that they fit within the recess and maximize the contact area between them.

Planar Resonator Embedded Substrate Integrated Waveguide (Siw) Cavity Filter, Kirti Dhwaj, Richard Hadi, Tao Yang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Joshu Kovitz, Tatsuo Itoh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two capacitor loaded planar resonators are introduced in a two-cavity substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) structure to obtain a fourth order filter. The planar resonators each produce a transmission zero by signal interference. Design methodology for a 5 % bandwidth bandpass filter operating at 2.35 GHz is presented in the paper. Two transmission zeroes are placed on either side of the filter passband to obtain a quasi-elliptic response with a mid-band inserion loss of 1.65 dB. Good agreement is obtained between measured and simulated responses of the single-layer printed circuit board (PCB) filter.

Blazed Metasurface Grating With Handedness Preservation For Circularly Polarized Incident Wave, Xiaoqiang Li, Cheng Tao, Lijun Jiang, Tatsuo Itoh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new blazed metasurface grating for circularly polarized (CP) incident wave operating at 10 GHz is proposed. Such a structure can provide strong auto-collimation for the CP incident wave. Unlike the conventional scatterer, which typically reverses the handedness of the incident CP wave upon reflection, the proposed grating can preserve the handedness. The auto-collimation blazing effect and handedness preservation are achieved by a specially designed reactive impedance surface, which allows independent response controls to transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations. The proposed idea is demonstrated by simulations and verified by experiments. Comparisons with conventional sawtooth grating are made …

Silica Nanoparticle-Endothelial Interaction: Uptake And Effect On Platelet Adhesion Under Flow Conditions, Jiban Saikia, Raziye Mohammadpour, Mostafa Yazdimamaghani, Hannah Northrup, Vladimir Hlady, Hamidreza Ghandehari

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silica nanoparticles are extensively used in biomedical applications and consumer products. Little is known about the interaction of these NPs with the endothelium and effect on platelet adhesion under flow conditions in circulation. In this study, we investigated the effect of silica nanoparticles on the endothelium and its inflammation, and subsequent adhesion of flowing platelets in vitro. Platelet counts adhered onto the surface of endothelial cells in the presence of nanoparticles increased at both low and high concentrations of nanoparticles. Preincubation of endothelial cells with nanoparticles also increased platelet adhesion. Interestingly, platelet adhesion onto TNF-α-treated endothelial cells decreased in the …

Exploring Best Lossy Compression Strategy By Combining Sz With Spatiotemporal Decimation, Xin Liang, Sheng Di, Sihuan Li, Dingwen Tao, Zizhong Chen, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In today’s extreme-scale scientific simulations, vast volumes of data are being produced such that the data cannot be accommodated by the parallel file system or the data writing/ reading performance will be fairly low because of limited I/O bandwidth. In the past decade, many snapshot-based (or space-based) lossy compressors have been developed, most of which rely on the smoothness of the data in space. However, the simulation data may get more and more complicated in space over time steps, such that the compression ratios decrease significantly. In this paper, we propose a novel, hybrid lossy compression method by leveraging spatiotemporal …

Improving Error-Bounded Compression For Cosmological Simulation, Sihuan Li, Sheng Di, Xin Liang, Zizhong Chen, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cosmological simulations may produce extremely large amount of data, such that its successful run depends on large storage capacity and huge I/O bandwidth, especially in the exascale computing scale. Effective error-bounded lossy compressors with both high compression ratios and low data distortion can significantly reduce the total data size while guaranteeing the data valid for post-analysis. In this poster, we propose a novel, efficient compression model for cosmological N-body simulation framework, by combining the advantages of both space-based compression and time-based compression. The evaluation with a well-known cosmological simulation code shows that our proposed solution can get much higher compression …

A New Efficient Domain Decomposition Method For Highly Irregular Via Patterns, Ping Li, Lijun Jiang, Xiaoyan Xiong, Hakan Bagci Nov 2018

A New Efficient Domain Decomposition Method For Highly Irregular Via Patterns, Ping Li, Lijun Jiang, Xiaoyan Xiong, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the high-speed signal path on PCB and packagings, vias usually causes most discontinuities and thereby crosstalks. In simulation and characterizations, they also generate more errors than the trace parts due to rich modes around them. To achieve both efficiency and accuracy, in this paper, a new domain decomposition based finite element time domain (FETD) method is proposed for the analysis of power/ground plate pairs with various types of antipads. Using the magnetic field feature, the 3D computational domain is firstly represented by a quasi-2D field. Then by taking advantage of the fast decaying property of high order modes, the …

We Unravel The Correlated Tunneling Dynamics Of A Mass Imbalanced Few-Body Fermi-Fermi Mixture Upon Quenching The Tilt Of A Double Well. The Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of Both Species Changes From Rabi Oscillations Close To The Noninteracting Limit To A Delayed Tunneling Dynamics For Moderate Interspecies Repulsions. Considering Strong Interspecies Interactions, The Lighter Species Experiences Quantum Self-Trapping Due To The Heavier Species Which Acts As An Effective Material Barrier, While Performing Almost Perfect Rabi Oscillations. The Degree Of Entanglement, Inherent In The System, Is Analyzed And Found To Be Significant At Both Moderate And Strong Repulsions. To Relate Our Findings To Possible …

Biaxial Bending Of Cold-Formed Steel Storage Rack Uprights – Part I: Parametric Studies And Response, Nima Talebian, Benoit P. Gilbert, Cao Hung Pham, Romain Chariere, Hassan Karampour

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper first introduces an advanced finite element model to determine the biaxial bending capacity of cold-formed steel storage rack upright sections. The model is found to accurately predict published experimental results with an average predicted to experimental capacity ratio of 1.02. Second, the validated model is used to run parametric studies and analyse the biaxial response of slender, semi-compact and compact unperforated storage rack upright cross-sections. Analyses are run for local and distortional buckling failure modes only. Ten and four different cross-sectional shapes are analysed for local and distortional buckling, respectively, and nine biaxial bending configurations are considered per …

Sidelap And Structural Fastener Tests For Steel Deck Diaphragms, Y. Shi, S. Torabian, Benjamin W. Schafer, W. S. Easterling, M. R. Eatherton

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Steel deck diaphragm systems, which are commonly used for roof construction in steel-framed buildings, consist of many parts such as corrugated steel deck sheets, sidelap fasteners between adjacent sheets, structural fasteners from the sheets to the supporting beams or joists, chord elements, and collectors. Load-deformation behavior of a steel deck diaphragm system is typically dominated by sidelap and structural fastener limit states. To understand and accurately model the behavior of steel deck diaphragm systems, it is therefore necessary to characterize the behavior of the individual fasteners. The effect of local geometry and detailing at these fasteners such as how the …

Distortional Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Flanges Under Stress Gradient, Robert S. Glauz Nov 2018

Distortional Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Flanges Under Stress Gradient, Robert S. Glauz

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The strength of cold-formed steel beams with stiffened flanges may be controlled by distortional buckling. Buckling stress prediction methods have been developed for flanges under uniform compression. However, channel sections are commonly used where bending occurs about the minor axis with flanges under stress gradient, such that the edges are in compression and the flanges may experience distortional buckling. Current design specifications do not explicitly address this failure mode, which could lead to unsafe designs. This paper presents and verifies an analytical approach for distortional buckling stress prediction for flanges under stress gradient. The approach is consistent with the design …

Tensile Strength And Serviceability Of Cold-Formed Steel Clip Angles, Wenying Zhang, Zhishan Yan, Mahsa Mahdavian, Mohamad Yousof, Cheng Yu

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper reports the recent research findings of cold-formed steel clip angles in tension. The relevant experimental program and the proposed design methods are presented. The test program involved two phases of testing: Phase I of program focused on the pull-over strength of screw connections on the anchored leg of the clip angles, and Phase II of program concentrated on the tensile strength of the anchored leg of the clip angles within the service deflection limit. Design methods for predicting the pull-over strength as well as tensile strength within the serviceability deformation limit are proposed based on the test results …

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Clip Angle In Combined Bending And Shear Loading, Cheng Yu, Zhishan Yan, Wenying Zhang Nov 2018

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Clip Angle In Combined Bending And Shear Loading, Cheng Yu, Zhishan Yan, Wenying Zhang

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) clip angles have been commonly used for connecting CFS framing members or attaching CFS members to the major building structure. The implementation of clip angles involves consideration of ultimate strength for combined bending moments and shear forces. Therefore, a test program of CFS clip angle was recently conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of cold-formed steel clip angle subjected to combined bending moments and shear forces at different boundary conditions. The research included connection tests on clip angle. The testing method was adopted from the AISI S914 Test Standard for Joist Connectors Attached to Clod-Formed …

Critical Design Criteria For Standard, Truncated, And Parallel Chords Cold-Formed Steel Trusses, Maelle Van Thienen, Johannes Dimyadi, James B. P. Lim, G. Charles Clifton Nov 2018

Critical Design Criteria For Standard, Truncated, And Parallel Chords Cold-Formed Steel Trusses, Maelle Van Thienen, Johannes Dimyadi, James B. P. Lim, G. Charles Clifton

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The design of cold-formed steel trusses can be a very complicated and long repetitive process involving up to 28 load combinations added to serviceability checks depending on the design standards being used. This process is particularly tedious if a near optimal solution is required. Additionally, the risk of introducing human errors is usually quite high as it is a process often done by hand. FRAMECAD Structure is a niche software solution born from the desire to provide a complete solution for constructing with cold-formed steel by a company selling roll-forming machines. FRAMECAD Structure specialises on automating the calculations and design …

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of cold-formed ferritic stainless steel tubular sections under End-One-Flange (EOF) loading condition. A series of web crippling tests was conducted on cold-formed square and rectangular hollow sections of ferritic stainless steel grade EN 1.4003. The web crippling test results were used for the verification of the finite element (FE) model. Upon verification, a parametric study was performed thereafter. The codified web crippling design provisions in American, Australian/New Zealand and European standards for stainless steel structures were assessed. Improved web crippling design rules are proposed for cold-formed ferritic stainless steel tubular sections under EOF …

Optimum Slot Weld Width For Cold-Formed Steel, Emilee A. Martin, Fredrick R. Rutz Nov 2018

Optimum Slot Weld Width For Cold-Formed Steel, Emilee A. Martin, Fredrick R. Rutz

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Slot welds can be used for connections in cold-formed steel (CFS) structures. However, structural engineers will find AISI S100, “North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members” (AISI 2016) - which can be used for guidance in calculating structural capacity of many welds types - silent on this specific application.

Research at the University of Colorado Denver has been directed toward determination of the strength of slot welds in sheet steel. A comprehensive series of tests were performed to determine structural capacity and ductility of various slot weld widths using a metal inert gas (MIG) welding process. …

Using Generalized Beam Theory To Assess The Behavior Of Curved Thin-Walled Members, Nuno Peres, Rodrigo Goncalves, Dinar Camotim

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

In this work, the first-order behavior of naturally curved thin-walled bars with circular axis, without pre-twist, is assessed with the help of the Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) formulation previously developed by the authors. With respect to the previous work, which dealt with simple cross-sections, the present paper presents a method to obtain the deformation modes for arbitrary flat-walled cross-sections. Despite the complexity involved in this generalization, the standard GBT kinematic assumptions are kept, since they are essential to (i) subdivide the modes in a meaningful way and (ii) reduce the number of DOFs necessary to obtain accurate solutions. It is …

Proposal To Improve The Dsm Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Angle Columns: Need, Background, Quality Assessment And Illustration, Pedro Borges Dinis, Dinar Camotim

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper presents a proposal for the codification of an efficient design approach, based on the Direct Strength Method (DSM), for cold-formed steel equal-leg angle columns with short-to-intermediate lengths, i.e., those buckling in flexural-torsional modes. Initially, the available experimental failure load data, comprising fixed-ended and pin-ended (“cylindrical hinges”) columns with several geometries (cross-section dimensions and lengths) and tested by various researchers, are collected and used to show that the currently codified DSM design provisions are not able to handle adequately short-to- intermediate angle columns and that a specific DSM-based design approach is needed to estimate the failure loads of such …
