Magnetic Control Of Transport Of Particles And Droplets In Low Reynolds Number Shear Flows, Jie Zhang
Magnetic Control Of Transport Of Particles And Droplets In Low Reynolds Number Shear Flows, Jie Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
“Magnetic particles and droplets have been used in a wide range applications including biomedicine, biological analysis and chemical reaction. The manipulation of magnetic microparticles or microdroplets in microscale fluid environments is one of the most critical processes in the systems and platforms based on microfluidic technology. The conventional methods are based on magnetic forces to manipulate magnetic particles or droplets in a viscous fluid.
In contrast to conventional magnetic separation method, several recent experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated a different way to manipulate magnetic non-spherical particles by using a uniform magnetic field in the microchannel. However, the fundamental mechanism …
Integrated Approach To Investigate The Wellbore Integrity Under Downhole Conditions, Weicheng Zhang
Integrated Approach To Investigate The Wellbore Integrity Under Downhole Conditions, Weicheng Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
“The integrity of the cement sheath is the key part to maintain zonal isolation and prevent the inter-zonal communication. Loads arising from multiple stages of wellbore life span may induce various modes of cement failure within the cement (disking and radial cracks) and at the cement-casing and the cement-formation interfaces (debonding fractures). This research utilizes the integrated laboratory and numerical approach to investigate the cement hardening process, to predict the cement failure under various loading conditions. An innovative experimental setup is established to measure the cement pore pressure variation during the hardening process under downhole conditions, and a staged 3D …

“ The goals of higher education have evolved through time based on the impact that technology development and industry have on productivity. Nowadays, jobs demand increased technical skills, and the supply of prepared personnel to assume those jobs is insufficient. The system of higher education needs to evaluate their practices to realize the potential of cultivating an educated and technically skilled workforce. Currently, completion rates at universities are too low to accomplish the aim of closing the workforce gap. Recent reports indicate that 40 percent of freshman at four-year public colleges will not graduate, and rates of completion are even …
Applications Of Information Theory In Filtering And Sensor Management, Matthew James Gualdoni
Applications Of Information Theory In Filtering And Sensor Management, Matthew James Gualdoni
Doctoral Dissertations
“A classical sensor tasking methodology is analyzed in the context of generating sensor schedules for monitoring resident space objects (RSOs). This approach, namely maximizing the expected Kullback-Leibler divergence in a measurement update, is evaluated from a probabilistic perspective to determine the accuracy of the conventional approach. In this investigation, a newdivergence-based approach is proposed to circumvent themyopic nature of the measure, forecasting the potential information contribution to a time of interest and leveraging the system dynamics and measurement model to do so. The forecasted objective exploits properties of a batch measurement update to frequently exhibit faster optimization times when compared …

Geo-Engineered Induced Seismicity And The Effects On Federal Infrastructure, Merissa L. Zuzulock
Doctoral Dissertations
“The study of human-induced seismicity and the effects on civil engineering systems are not completely understood or often studied. Moreover, existing studies are focused on the cause of the seismicity and not on the potential damage to infrastructure from these seismic events. There are recent studies that are beginning to focus on shallow induced seismic activity and the effects on infrastructure by establishing innovative ways to quantify that damage. These studies that focus on the potential damage neglect to included considerations for small magnitude cluster events. As geo-induced seismic events increase, soil fatigue becomes of greater concern to structures within …

Doctoral Dissertations
”Lean has become a common term and goal in organizations throughout the world. The approach of eliminating waste and continuous improvement may seem simple on the surface but can be more complex when it comes to implementation. Some firms implement lean with great success, getting complete organizational buy-in and realizing the efficiencies foundational to lean. Other organizations struggle to implement lean. Never able to get the buy-in or traction needed to really institute the sort of cultural change that is often needed to implement change. It would be beneficial to have a tool that organizations could use to assess their …

Tools To Evaluate Nanodiamond-Mediated Delivery Of Tiopronin For Cataract Prevention, Justin Beltz
Doctoral Dissertations
”There is a growing demand for non-surgical means of cataract treatment. This dissertation presents three bodies of work that reflect the early-stage development of eye drop formulations aimed at delaying cataract progression. These formulations consist of the antioxidant 2-mercaptopropionylglycine (MPG) loaded onto nanodiamond particles.
Cataractogenesis is linked to oxidative damage to lens proteins. To investigate the potential of MPG for protection against oxidative damage, A549 cells were incubated in 0.6 mM tert-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP). Cells exposed to tBHP without MPG exhibited elevated levels of reactive oxygen species, which led to the depletion of the vital antioxidant glutathione and, ultimately, apoptosis. Co-administration …

Pattern Selection Models: From Normal To Anomalous Diffusion, Hatim K. Khudhair
Doctoral Dissertations
“Pattern formation and selection is an important topic in many physical, chemical, and biological fields. In 1952, Alan Turing showed that a system of chemical substances could produce spatially stable patterns by the interplay of diffusion and reactions. Since then, pattern formations have been widely studied via the reaction-diffusion models. So far, patterns in the single-component system with normal diffusion have been well understood. Motivated by the experimental observations, more recent attention has been focused on the reaction-diffusion systems with anomalous diffusion as well as coupled multi-component systems. The objectives of this dissertation are to study the effects of superdiffusion …
Behavior Of Negative Stiffness Metamaterial Systems In Structural Engineering Applications, Yasser Darwish
Behavior Of Negative Stiffness Metamaterial Systems In Structural Engineering Applications, Yasser Darwish
Doctoral Dissertations
“Metamaterial systems with negative stiffness behavior became a point of interest in many energy dissipation applications due to their ability to dissipate high levels of energy. Negative stiffness metamaterial elements can dissipate energy through non-linear elastic behavior when transferred from one stable mode of buckling to another. Hence, the ability of such elements to be reusable for multiple loading cycles exists. Such unique properties made the metamaterial systems a perfect candidate for structural applications such as impact protection of bridges against collision. This research provides innovative metamaterial shell structure that can exhibit negative stiffness behavior by deforming from one shape …
