Studying The Effects Of New Additive Materials For The Improvement Of The Capacity And Cycle Life Performance Of The Lead-Acid Battery, Julian Kosacki

Doctoral Dissertations

"Lead-acid batteries are an established technology with nearly 99% recyclability; however, lead-acid batteries produce only 40% of their theoretical capacity due to poor active mass utilization and PbSO4 pore blockage, and the longevity of the batteries is hampered by secondary reactions during the cycle life such as corrosion and gassing.

Lead-acid batteries were investigated and improved through several different approaches: an alternative electrolyte to mitigate secondary reactions, graphite additives to improve positive active mass (PAM) utilization, and dispersant additives to help the industrial pasting process.

The thermodynamics and chemical reactions of a commercial electrolyte replacement called TydrolyteTM were investigated …

Hydromechanical Stress And Internal Erosion Under Earthen Structures, Kerry Allen Magner

Doctoral Dissertations

"Dam failures by seepage and internal erosion have reportedly been attributed to up to 40% of all dam failures in the United States. Backwards piping erosion either through the embankment or foundation soils has been reported to be the major contributing method to seepage and internal erosion dam failures. This proposed research is motivated by the lack of understanding of the complex stress regimes associated with internal erosion in cohesionless soils under earthen structures. The overall goal of this research is to provide a fundamental understanding of internal erosion and the hydromechanical stress conditions necessary for the initiation and continuation …

"Drug delivery to inside of the tumor is the important problem. The dynamics of drug delivery is presented here. Previously and particularly for directed delivery, a stirred tank model has been used, which appears to have worked well when compared to experiments. However, the stirred tank models do not include all the mass transfer resistances and towards that end we have used a distributed system called Krogh cylinder. This study focuses on the Krogh cylinder model simulation, both on the fluid flow and the mass transfer. The capillary network is broken down into cylindrical cells, each containing a capillary and …

Despite numerous seismological studies, controversies remain regarding the structure, evolution, and dynamics of the crust and mantle beneath Australia. In this study, we used two techniques, receiver functions and shear wave splitting analyses, to investigate the topography of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities and mantle seismic azimuthal anisotropy, respectively. We utilized P-to-S receiver functions to map the 410 and 660 km discontinuities bordering the MTZ. The discontinuity depths obtained show a systematic apparent uplifting for both discontinuities in central and western …

Information-Based Methods And Models For Particle Flow Filtering, Kari Catherine Ward Jan 2021

Information-Based Methods And Models For Particle Flow Filtering, Kari Catherine Ward

Doctoral Dissertations

"Recursive estimation methodologies, such as Kalman and Bayesian filters, typically require models of some kind to perform the estimation. This filtering process seeks to improve knowledge surrounding some quantities of interest, or states, over time by incorporation of imperfect observations. The models required pertain to the state dynamics, sensors from which measurements are obtained, and probabilistic models of the underlying stochastic processes. In addition to any number of necessary models, real-world application of a filter is normally accompanied by at least one, if not several, techniques to promote better performance. These methods vary in purpose from expanding the kinds of …

Swill-Tac: Skill-Oriented Dynamic Task Allocation With Willingness For Complex Job In Crowdsourcing, Riya Samanta, Soumya K. Ghosh, Sajal K. Das Jan 2021

Swill-Tac: Skill-Oriented Dynamic Task Allocation With Willingness For Complex Job In Crowdsourcing, Riya Samanta, Soumya K. Ghosh, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Allocating tasks to the best-fit candidates is a classical problem in crowdsourcing (CS). Most of the existing approaches assume that the task and candidate knowledge is known in advance and ignore the effect of enrolled candidates' willingness on the CS system's selection decision. For instance, an unwilling candidate assigned to a task may quit without completing it, thus depreciating the utility of the CS platform. In practice, a task or candidate may arrive or leave the CS system dynamically. Moreover, a complex task may be broken into smaller sub-tasks, each requiring a variety of computations and expertise. To overcome these …

Quality-Of-Service Architecture For Cloud Computing Networking, Ken R. Owens Jr., Steve Eugene Watkins Jan 2021

Quality-Of-Service Architecture For Cloud Computing Networking, Ken R. Owens Jr., Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quality-of-service (QoS) performance is an important consideration for real-time and high-priority traffic on internet protocol (IP) networks. Service differentiation can provide a more efficient and customer-oriented internet. The “best-effort” internet models in use today cannot provide guarantees or service differentiation for end-to-end individual and aggregate data flows. Hardware-based models and software-based models do not completely address the total service-enabled solution. We propose a hybrid architecture that combines software and hardware features to handle network traffic with diverse QoS requirements. Since cloud providers leverage IP networks today, the model is based on a systems engineering approach that uses cloud computing technologies. …

Stress-State Dependency Of The Deformation Ratio Of Quasi-Elastic Granular Soils Under Cyclic Loading -- Supporting Information, Pingxin Xia, Longtan Shao, Wen Deng Jan 2021

Stress-State Dependency Of The Deformation Ratio Of Quasi-Elastic Granular Soils Under Cyclic Loading -- Supporting Information, Pingxin Xia, Longtan Shao, Wen Deng

Research Data

Poisson’s ratio, besides its transverse-axial strain ratio definition, also plays a significant role in traditional elastic theory as an elastic constant. However, this elastic role of Poisson’s ratio faces a challenge when applied to quasi-elastic granular soils. A so-called “deformation ratio” is therefore introduced and measured in this paper for quasi-elastic granular soils. With the same definition of the transverse-axial strain ratio as Poisson’s ratio, the stress-state dependency of the deformation ratio and the break-down of conversion relationship of elastic constants are investigated under cyclic triaxial tests. The results show that Poisson’s ratio is consistent with deformation ratio only in …

This research seeks to use and improve existing remote sensing and GIS techniques to identify areas of optimal water supply in locations with limited geologic or hydrologic information, such as Gulu District, Uganda. Fusing different remotely sensed data sets can produce higher …

Studies On Tornado-Structure Interactions And Guidance On Design Tornadic Wind Loading, Zhi Li Jan 2021

Studies On Tornado-Structure Interactions And Guidance On Design Tornadic Wind Loading, Zhi Li

Doctoral Dissertations

“Tornadoes are violent natural hazards that could caused significant property loss and fatalities. Statistical data indicates that most fatalities during tornado incidents were caused by the building failure under tornadoes. For example, in the 2011 Joplin Tornado, 161 people were killed, and 84 percent of the fatalities were related to the failure of buildings. In addition, most of the significant, tornado-induced property loss and fatalities are relevant to the tornadoes passing through the densely populated regions. Besides buildings, bridges were also severely damaged or destroyed by tornadoes in the United States. To reduce the tornado-induced loss, it is imperative to …

Development Of Tripodal And Bipodal Ligand Frameworks And First-Row Transition Metal Reagents For Selective C-N Bond Construction Methodologies, Anshika Kalra

Doctoral Dissertations

"We present a family of anionic Mn(II) reagents supported by trisphenylamido- amlne frameworks that offer guidance with regards to ligand selection for developing C—N bond construction methodologies (extensively used in the synthesis of petrochemicals, household chemicals) through nitrene- transfer chemistry. We subsequently extend the study to include the corresponding Fe(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) reagents, to gain insights in their comparative reactivity/selectivity patterns. Attenuated levels of electrophilicity of anionic complexes proved to be more suitable for discriminating aromatic from aliphatic olefins for aziridination purposes, especially for Mn(II) complexes. However, in the case of Co(II) reagents, we observe that additional stereoelectronic parameters …

Protection Of Modern Distribution Systems, Fahd Amin Hariri Jan 2021

Protection Of Modern Distribution Systems, Fahd Amin Hariri

Doctoral Dissertations

“Motivated by the potential for improvements in the electric distribution system’s protection schemes, this work examined the challenges facing protection schemes due to the integration of Distributed Generators (DGs). Traditional protection schemes for radial distribution systems were designed based on the unidirectional power flow from the source down to the loads. Protective devices typically use are overcurrent relays, autoreclosers, fuses, and circuit breakers. However, these protective schemes may no longer be sufficient to ensure correct operation in the new era of distribution systems integrated by DGs. This research investigated the impact of DGs that might mislead the protection schemes in …

An Investigation On The Regulation Of The Tweak–Fn14–Nf-Kb Pathway, Jawahar Khetan Jan 2021

An Investigation On The Regulation Of The Tweak–Fn14–Nf-Kb Pathway, Jawahar Khetan

Doctoral Dissertations

“Dysregulation of inflammatory pathways is strongly implicated in cancers and autoimmune diseases. The most consequential of these pathways involves the nuclear translocation of NF-kB, a transcription factor that induces the transcription of multiple proteins associated with cell survival, inflammation, proliferation and death. It is activated when the fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 kDa protein (Fn14), a trimeric receptor recruits its ligand, TWEAK. Studies have shown that Fn14 is over-expressed in many tumors, the aggressiveness of which is often correlated with the degree of upregulation. Furthermore, TWEAK-Fn14 activation has been shown to result in persistent NF-kB activation. Using a mechanistic model of …

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition: New Approximation Theory And A New Computational Approach, Sarah Katherine Locke Jan 2021

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition: New Approximation Theory And A New Computational Approach, Sarah Katherine Locke

Doctoral Dissertations

“Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) projection errors and error bounds for POD reduced order models of partial differential equations have been studied by many. In this research we obtain new results regarding POD data approximation theory and present a new difference quotient (DQ) approach for computing the POD modes of the data.

First, we improve on earlier results concerning POD projection errors by extending to a more general framework that allows for non-orthogonal POD projections and seminorms. We obtain new exact error formulas and convergence results for POD data approximation errors, and also prove new pointwise convergence results and error bounds …

Spatial Variations Of Teleseismic P-Wave Attenuation And Scattering Beneath The Southeastern United States And The Malawi And Luangwa Rift Zones In East Africa, Ashutosh Shrivastava

Doctoral Dissertations

"Seismic attenuation is an important physical parameter for characterizing subsurface morphology and the thermal structure of the Earth’s crust and mantle. In this study, teleseismic P-wave amplitude spectra are used to examine the seismic attenuation beneath the southeastern United States and the Malawi and Luangwa rift zones in east African. The resulting seismic attenuation parameters (Δt*) reveal a systematic contrast between the Appalachian Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain exhibiting high and low attenuation, respectively. Spatial coherency analysis of the Δt* observations suggests that the center of the low-attenuation layer is located within the uppermost mantle at about …

Instrumentation, Modeling, And Sound Metamodeling Foundations For Complex Hybrid Systems, Natasha Amelia Jarus Jan 2021

Instrumentation, Modeling, And Sound Metamodeling Foundations For Complex Hybrid Systems, Natasha Amelia Jarus

Doctoral Dissertations

Many of our critical infrastructures, from power grids to water distribution networks, are complex hybrid systems that use software to control their non-trivial physical dynamics. These systems must be able to capably serve their purpose, while also being reliable, dependable, safe, secure, and efficient. Representation and analysis of these features requires the creation of several distinct models. These models may encode design goals or be derived from collected instrumentation data, reflecting both how a system ought to operate and how it does operate. It is essential to ensure that all of these models consistently and accurately describe the same system. …
