Stochastic Edge Detection For Fine-Grained Progressive Precision, Youngwook Lee, Kyung Ki Kim, Yong Bin Kim, Minsu Choi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stochastic Computing (SC) is a method of performing an operation by expressing a probability in a bitstream. This format is simpler than the format of conventional binary computing and can be implemented in hardware with fewer resources. In addition, by using a Low-Discrepancy (LD) sequence, faster convergence can be derived. This paper shows the experimental results of applying SC using LD sequence to edge detection algorithms including Sobel and Roberts Cross to analyze the progressive precision performance and scalability.

Partial Arc Sampling Receiving Scheme For Demultiplexing Of Orbital Angular Momentum Vortex Beam, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Due to the divergence of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam, the OAM demultiplexing needs a considerable aperture size to acquire the OAM field information, which brings the challenges to implementation of the receiving end. To tackle this issue, we develop a partial arc sampling receiving (PASR) scheme for demultiplexing of the vortex beams by using the augmented dynamic mode decomposition (A-DMD) approach. Simulation benchmarks are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed novel demultiplexing method.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In near field far-field transformation (NFFFT), accurate recovery of the current distribution is subjected to the phase measurement. Phase retrieval is an alternative way to recover the current distribution by utilizing the magnitude-only near field sampling data. In phase retrieval algorithm, sufficient independent measurement data are required. Multi-polarization algorithm is employed to generate different current distribution, then, obtaining more independent near field data. Experimental validations of a numeric examples show its potentialities and interest.

The emergence of highly directional beamforming technology makes millimeter wave frequency band communication possible in future wireless communication networks. Based on the multipath characteristics of millimeter wave frequency communication, a high-precision multipath channel estimation algorithm based on signal subspace is proposed. In the mobile terminal, an iterative heuristic radiofrequency combination algorithm based on spatial points is proposed. The analog precoding at the base station uses deep learning to accelerate the calculation, and then the multi-user communication is modeled to design the digital precoding. The simulation results show that the multi-channel estimation algorithm can estimate 4 paths with an error of …

Modeling And Simulation Of Resistive Superconducting Fault Current Limiter In Pscad/Emtdc™, Fahd Hariri, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Energy networks are facing significant challenges as the result of increasing electrical loads. To meet this rapid increase in demand for electricity, new generating units are being added to support the stability and reliability of the network. This change in network structure requires a comprehensive analysis of the effect of that increase on the protection system. Limiting the fault current to safe levels prevents replacing the high-cost network components that may be subjected to damage due to exceeding the rated short-circuit current values for which they were designed. A fault analysis often requires extensive modeling and simulation of the system, …

Advanced Control Techniques For Modern Inertia Based Inverters, Sepehr Saadatman

Doctoral Dissertations

”In this research three artificial intelligent (AI)-based techniques are proposed to regulate the voltage and frequency of a grid-connected inverter. The increase in the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into the power grid has led to the increase in the penetration of fast-responding inertia-less power converters. The increase in the penetration of these power electronics converters changes the nature of the conventional grid, in which the existing kinetic inertia in the rotating parts of the enormous generators plays a vital role. The concept of virtual inertia control scheme is proposed to make the behavior of grid connected inverters more …

Prediction Of Deflection Of Helical Anchors Under Load, Andre Stephen Hawks

Doctoral Dissertations

”As the sophistication of modern structural design methods has improved over time, the ability to accurately predict and model foundation stiffness has become increasingly more important. In complicated structural systems with deep foundations, correct calculation of the distribution of load and serviceability requires proper modeling of axial load-deflection characteristics. To keep pace with advances in structural analysis, there is much need for more practical and scientific work on the load-deflection prediction of deep foundations including Helical Anchors.

The load-settlement mechanism of an axially loaded helical pile is a complex soil-structure interaction problem influenced by helical pile dimensions, installation method, and …

Thermal And Mechanical Properties Of Novel Carbide Materials, Evan Charles Schwind

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research focuses on studying the thermal and mechanical properties of novel carbide materials at room and elevated temperatures. The novel carbide materials investigated include zeta phase tantalum carbide (ζ-Ta4C3-x) and a high entropy (Ta,Hf,Nb,Zr)C carbide. The electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of zeta phase tantalum carbide (~96 wt.%) were measured as 160 ± 4.2 μΩ-cm and 9.6 W/m•K. These are higher and lower (respectively) than for cubic tantalum carbide, most likely due to planes of carbon vacancies present in the ζ-Ta4C3-x crystal structure. The thermal conductivity of (Ta,Hf,Nb,Zr)C was lower than any …

Doctoral Dissertations

"Shovel-truck systems are the most widely employed excavation and material handling systems for surface mining operations. During this process, a high-impact shovel loading operation (HISLO) produces large forces that cause extreme whole body vibrations (WBV) that can severely affect the safety and health of haul truck operators. Previously developed solutions have failed to produce satisfactory results as the vibrations at the truck operator seat still exceed the “Extremely Uncomfortable Limits”. This study was a novel effort in developing deep learning-based solution to the HISLO problem.

This research study developed a rigorous mathematical model and a 3D virtual simulation model to …

Investigating The Effect Of Operating Condition On Esd-Induced Soft-Failures, Omid Hoseini Izadi Jan 2021

Investigating The Effect Of Operating Condition On Esd-Induced Soft-Failures, Omid Hoseini Izadi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Conflicting observations have been found in the literature regarding the effect of operating conditions on ESD (electrostatic discharge) susceptibility. While some studies have suggested a strong correlation between the two, others observed little to no correlation. In this work, a systematic study has been carried out suggesting the existence of a strong correlation between the ESD susceptibility and operating conditions. It is found that the root cause of this conflict is random ESD noise injection. A measurement approach is proposed to synchronize the noise injection with the system activity such as high/low CPU load. In this approach, the current consumption …

Power Generation From Waste Heat During Oil Production, Subrahmanya Chandra Bhamidipati Jan 2021

Power Generation From Waste Heat During Oil Production, Subrahmanya Chandra Bhamidipati

Masters Theses

"The increase in the world population is causing a significant increase in the global demand for energy. This rise in demand is generally met with the use of fossil fuels. But there is considerable pressure to lessen the release of carbon through the combustion of fossil fuels. One way that the oil and gas industry can provide increased energy without carbon combustion is by extracting the latent heat energy contained in produced oil, gas and water from producing reservoirs, and from water which is cycled through depleted, end-of-life or abandoned reservoirs. Extracting this energy and using it to provide direct …

Toward Understanding Commercial Additives For Zincate Electrogalvanizing, Margaret Scott

Masters Theses

"Cyanide zinc electrogalvanizing has been used for many years to produce high quality and uniform zinc coatings. Due to toxicity concerns, a significant amount of research has occurred to remove the use of cyanide while still producing a similar deposit. One of the resulting plating chemistries is the alkaline zincate bath.

Alkaline zincate plating has the advantages of low startup cost, low toxicity, and low corrosion rate. Despite these advantages, alkaline bath conditions do not produce acceptable zinc deposits without the use of plating additives, which can promote lustrous, smooth deposits. This research aims to: (1) generate fundamental electrochemical data …
