Temperature And Strain Sensing With Hybrid Interferometer, Lashari Ghulam Abbas, Zhou Ai, Farhan Mumtaz, Atta Muhammad, Yutang Dai, Rashda Parveen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A hybrid interferometer for simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature is proposed and investigated experimentally. This hybrid design is composed of Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and Michelson Interferometer (MI) cascaded with each other. It is developed by fusion splicing a single mode fiber (SMF), a multimode fiber (MMF), a dual side hole fiber (DSHF), a hollow core fiber (HCF) and a tapered-SMF. The tapered SMF was inserted into the HCF to form a reflection mirror for the FPI. The maximum temperature and strain sensitivity of the hybrid interferometer achieved through experiments is 11.6 pm/°C and 6.8 pm/mu varepsilon , respectively. The …

Second-Order Reliability Methods: A Review And Comparative Study, Zhangli Hu, Rami Mansour, Mårten Olsson, Xiaoping Du

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Second-order reliability methods are commonly used for the computation of reliability, defined as the probability of satisfying an intended function in the presence of uncertainties. These methods can achieve highly accurate reliability predictions owing to a second-order approximation of the limit-state function around the Most Probable Point of failure. Although numerous formulations have been developed, the lack of full-scale comparative studies has led to a dubiety regarding the selection of a suitable method for a specific reliability analysis problem. In this study, the performance of commonly used second-order reliability methods is assessed based on the problem scale, curvatures at the …

Understanding the human motor control strategy during physical interaction tasks is crucial for developing future robots for physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). In physical human-human interaction (pHHI), small interaction forces are known to convey their intent between the partners for effective motor communication. The aim of this work is to investigate what affects the human's sensitivity to the externally applied interaction forces. The hypothesis is that one way the small interaction forces are sensed is through the movement of the arm and the resulting proprioceptive signals. A pHRI setup was used to provide small interaction forces to the hand of seated …

Soils under spacio-temporally clustered events loading are susceptible to soil fatigue as pore pressure dissipates and the soil is unable to recover. This potential for damage from soil fatigue is identified through an induced seismic fatigue equation provided in this paper. The objective of this paper is to present an induced seimic equation for soils under spacio-temporally clustered impulse loading to identify potential hazards to the subsurface that supports critical infrastructure. It further illustrates the use of the equation as determined from a comparison of three varying soil profiles with resulting data that shows a need to establish new critieria …

Chemotherapeutic drugs suffer from non-specific binding, undesired toxicity, and poor blood circulation which contribute to poor therapeutic efficacy. In this study, antibody–drug nanoparticles (ADNs) are engineered by synthesizing pure anti-cancer drug nanorods (NRs) in the core of nanoparticles with a therapeutic monoclonal antibody, Trastuzumab on the surface of NRs for specific targeting and synergistic treatments of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive breast cancer cells. ADNs were designed by first synthesizing ~ 95 nm diameter × ~ 500 nm long paclitaxel (PTX) NRs using the nanoprecipitation method. The surface of PTXNRs was functionalized at 2′ OH nucleophilic site …

Effect Of The Melt Pool Boundary Network On The Anisotropic Mechanical Properties Of Selective Laser Melted 304l, Myranda Spratt, Joseph William Newkirk, Okanmisope Fashanu, K. Chandrashekhara

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Anisotropic mechanical properties are a well-known issue in selective laser melted parts. The microstructure produced by selective laser melting (SLM) is directional, including the solidified melt pool structures and grains. This work investigates the melt pool boundary's effects on 304L stainless steel's compressive properties. 304L stainless steel solid cylinders were built using a pulse laser SLM machine in four directions using three hatch angle rotations: 0⁰, 67⁰, and 105⁰ . The twelve samples were compression tested, and the results were analyzed. Numerical models were also created with the different hatch angles and directions. The melt pool boundary network (MPBN) in …

Coal Moisture Variations In Response To Rainfall Event In Mines And Coal-Fired Power Plant Stockpiles—Part 1: Runoff, Infiltration, And Drainage, Quentin Peter Campbell, Marco Le Roux, Fardis Nakhaei

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excessive coal moisture leads to a lower heating value and power plant efficiency, and increased transportation costs. Therefore, coal stockpile management and moisture control are particularly important in regions with heavy precipitation. This paper and Part 2 address factors influencing moisture retention and migration in coal stockpiles. Part 1 of this paper series simulates phenomena of runoff, infiltration, and drainage in a stockpile after a rainfall event. Part 2 reports the effect of coal particle size and climate conditions on the rate and depth of moisture evaporation process within a coal stockpile. To perform this study, two coal samples were …

Coal Moisture Variations In Response To Rainfall Events In Mine And Coal-Fired Power Plant Stockpiles—Part 2: Evaporation, Quentin Peter Campbell, Marco Le Roux, Fardis Nakhaei

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Additional moisture added in coal stockpiles due to rain and other climatic processes causes a significant problem worldwide, which leads to not only decrease in the heating value of the coal but also creates an extra efficiency penalty. Therefore, it is important to make some predictions for control of coal moisture within stockpiles after the rainfall. When the rain falls on the stockpile, it either runs off the surface or infiltrates the stockpile. The infiltrated water may evaporate from the surface, drain or stay within the stockpile. The aims of this study (parts 1 and 2) are to describe and …

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) generator may create pre- and post-pulses in addition to the main pulse. These artifacts can cause additional device under test (DUT) failures. The origin and magnitude of these pulses were investigated in four commercial generators using measurements and simulation. Two types of unwanted pulses were identified. One is caused by the reignition of the spark, and the other relates to the relay contacting for charging the main capacitor. These pulses cause strong high-frequency signals, partially surpassing the radio frequency content of the main pulse. The spectrum of the pre- and postpulses varies greatly between different generators. …

Natural Van Der Waals Heterostructure Cylindrite With Highly Anisotropic Optical Responses, Arindam Dasgupta, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical exfoliation of naturally occurring layered materials has emerged as an easy and effective method for achieving ultrathin van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with well-defined lattice orientations of the constituent two-dimensional (2D) material layers. Cylindrite is one such naturally occurring vdW heterostructure, where the superlattice is composed of alternating stacks of SnS2-like and PbS-like layers. Although the constituent 2D lattices are isotropic, inhomogeneous strain occurring from local atomic alignment for forcing the commensuration makes the cylindrite superlattice structurally anisotropic. Here, we demonstrate the highly anisotropic optical responses of cylindrite thin flakes induced by the anisotropic crystal structure, including angle-resolved …

Naturally Occurring Van Der Waals Heterostructure Lengenbachite With Strong In-Plane Structural And Optical Anisotropy, Arindam Dasgupta, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lengenbachite is a naturally occurring layered mineral formed with alternating stacks of two constituent PbS-like and M2S3-like two-dimensional (2D) material layers due to the phase segregation process during the formation. Here, we demonstrate to achieve van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of lengenbachite down to a few layer-pair thickness by mechanical exfoliation of bulk lengenbachite mineral. The incommensurability between the constituent isotropic 2D material layers makes the formed vdW heterostructure exhibit strong in-plane structural anisotropy, which leads to highly anisotropic optical responses in lengenbachite thin flakes, including anisotropic Raman scattering, linear dichroism, and anisotropic third-harmonic generation. Moreover, …

Investigating Anisotropic Blast Wave Parameters Near The Explosive-Air Boundary Using Computer Simulation And Experimental Techniques With Varying Charge Geometry, Kelly Williams, Catherine E. Johnson

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The prediction of blast wave overpressure using scaled distance calculations use the charge mass and radial distance variables and assumes that the blast wave is isotropic. Simulations and empirical studies demonstrate that altering the charge geometry results in a significant deviation in overpressure vs orientation. While this effect has been measured for cylinders, truncated cones, and cubes, the mechanisms driving geometric blast wave product anisotropy have not been well defined. Velocity vectors plotted from computer simulations in this study show an isotropic radial flow from the cylindrical charges, while the prismatic charges with rectangle, triangle, and five-point star cross sections …

Multimodal Ensemble Deep Learning To Predict Disruptive Behavior Disorders In Children, Sreevalsan S. Menon, K. Krishnamurthy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, collectively referred to as disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), are prevalent psychiatric disorders in children. Early diagnosis of DBDs is crucial because they can increase the risks of other mental health and substance use disorders without appropriate psychosocial interventions and treatment. However, diagnosing DBDs is challenging as they are often comorbid with other disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and depression. In this study, a multimodal ensemble three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D CNN) deep learning model was used to classify children with DBDs and typically developing children. The study participants included 419 females and 681 …

An Energy-Efficient Smart Space System Using Lora Network With Deadline And Security Constraints, Preti Kumari, Hari Prabhat Gupta, Rahul Mishra, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we develop techniques that create smart space in an efficient manner, wherein the efficiency is defined in terms of all-together: energy, security, delay, and cost. We design an energy-efficient smart space system using the Long-Range (LoRa) network. The system consists of various sensors that generate sensory data represented as Multi-dimensional Time Series (MTS). The sensors are connected with an Edge device and LoRa node for processing and transferring the MTS, respectively. The system first proposes a deep learning-based compression-decompression model for reducing the size of MTS at the Edge devices. Next, it uses game theory for finding …

Machine Learning Identifies Liquids Employing A Simple Fiber-Optic Tip Sensor, Wassana Naku, Chen Zhu, Anand K. Nambisan, Rex E. Gerald, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We proposed an extremely simple fiber-optic tip sensor system to identify liquids by combining their corresponding droplet evaporation events with analyses using machine learning techniques. Pendant liquid droplets were suspended from the cleaved endface of a single-mode fiber during the experiment. The optical fiber-droplet interface and the droplet-air interface served as two partial reflectors of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) with a liquid droplet cavity. As the liquid pendant droplet evaporated, its length diminished. A light source can be used to observe the effective change in the net reflectivity of the optical fiber sensor system by observing the resulting optical …

Resilient Error-Bounded Lossy Compressor For Data Transfer, Sihuan Li, Sheng Di, Kai Zhao, Xin Liang, Zizhong Chen, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Todays exa-scale scientific applications or advanced instruments are producing vast volumes of data, which need to be shared/transferred through the network/devices with relatively low bandwidth (e.g., data sharing on WAN or transferring from edge devices to supercomputers). Lossy compression is one of the candidate strategies to address the big data issue. However, little work was done to make it resilient against silent errors, which may happen during the stage of compression or data transferring. In this paper, we propose a resilient error-bounded lossy compressor based on the SZ compression framework. Specifically, we design a new independentblock-wise model that decomposes the …

Online Optimization Of File Transfers In High-Speed Networks, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

File transfers in high-speed networks require network and I/O parallelism to reach high speeds, however, creating arbitrarily large numbers of I/O and network threads overwhelms system resources and causes fairness issues. In this paper, we introduce Falcon that combines a novel utility function with state-of-the-art online optimization algorithms to discover the degree of I/O and network parallelism for file transfer that can maximize the throughput while keeping system overhead low and ensuring fairness among competing transfers. Our extensive evaluations in several dedicated and production high-speed networks show that Falcon can find near optimal solution in as little as 20 seconds …

Detecting performance anomalies is key to efficiently utilize network resources and improve the quality of service. Researchers proposed various approaches to identify the presence of anomalies by analyzing performance statistics using heuristic (e.g., change point detection) and Machine Learning (ML) models. Although these models yield high accuracy in the networks that they are trained for, their performance degrade severely when transferred to different network settings. This is because of the fact that existing models detect anomalies by capturing the changes in transfer throughput and observed RTT values, which are dependent to network settings. In this paper, we propose a novel …

Warmonger: Inflicting Denial-Of-Service Via Serverless Functions In The Cloud, Junjie Xiong, Mingkui Wei, Zhuo Lu, Yao Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We debut the Warmonger attack, a novel attack vector that can cause denial-of-service between a serverless computing platform and an external content server. The Warmonger attack exploits the fact that a serverless computing platform shares the same set of egress IPs among all serverless functions, which belong to different users, to access an external content server. As a result, a malicious user on this platform can purposefully misbehave and cause these egress IPs to be blocked by the content server, resulting in a platform-wide denial of service. To validate the Warmonger attack, we ran months-long experiments, collected and analyzed the …

Analysis Of Energy Utilization And Losses For Jet-Propelled Vehicles, Mohammad Abbas, David W. Riggins Nov 2021

Analysis Of Energy Utilization And Losses For Jet-Propelled Vehicles, Mohammad Abbas, David W. Riggins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The global control volume-based energy utilization balance for an aerospace vehicle is extended to allow for the analysis of jet-propelled vehicles. The methodology is first developed for analyzing the energy utilization and entropy generation characteristics of jet engines without airframe considerations. This methodology, when combined with separate energy utilization analysis for an unpowered airframe, allows for the assessment of a powered vehicle. Wake entropy generation for a powered vehicle is shown to be the summation of the wake entropy generation associated with the propulsion system (no airframe) and the unpowered airframe. The fundamental relationship between overall entropy generation and the …
