Discrete Fractional Boundary Value Problems And Inequalities, Martin Bohner, Nick Fewster-Young Dec 2021

Discrete Fractional Boundary Value Problems And Inequalities, Martin Bohner, Nick Fewster-Young

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a general nonlinear discrete fractional boundary value problem is considered, of order between one and two. The main result is an existence theorem, proving the existence of at least one solution to the boundary value problem, subject to validity of a certain key inequality that allows unrestricted growth in the problem. The proof of this existence theorem is accomplished by using Brouwer's fixed point theorem as well as two other main results of this paper, namely, first, a result showing that the solutions of the boundary value problem are exactly the solutions to a certain equivalent integral …

Estimating Average Treatment Effect On The Treated Via Sufficient Dimension Reduction, Lu Li, Wei Luo, Xuerong Meggie Wen, Zhou Yu Dec 2021

Estimating Average Treatment Effect On The Treated Via Sufficient Dimension Reduction, Lu Li, Wei Luo, Xuerong Meggie Wen, Zhou Yu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose to use sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) in conjunction with nonparametric techniques to estimate the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT), a parameter of common interest in causal inference. The proposed method is applicable under a general low-dimensional structure in the data and avoids both the risk of model misspecification and the "curse of dimensionality," for which it often outperforms the existing parametric and nonparametric methods. We develop the theoretical properties of the proposed method, including its asymptotic normality, its asymptotic super-efficiency, and its equivalent form as an augmented inverse probability weighting estimator. We also …

Oscillation And Nonoscillation Criteria For Four-Dimensional Advanced And Delay Time-Scale Systems, Elvan Akin, Gülşah Yenpi Dec 2021

Oscillation And Nonoscillation Criteria For Four-Dimensional Advanced And Delay Time-Scale Systems, Elvan Akin, Gülşah Yenpi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We obtain oscillation and Non oscillation criteria for solutions to four-dimensional advanced and delay systems of first-order dynamic equations on time scales. To establish oscillation criteria, we eliminate Non oscillatory solutions of the systems based on the sign of components of the solutions. Furthermore, some of our results are new in the discrete case.

Study On Adsorption Characteristics Of Sulfonate Gemini Surfactant On Lignite Surface, Xuanlai Chen, Guochao Yan, Xianglin Yang, Guang Xu

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to explore the adsorption characteristics of sulfonate gemini surfactants on the surface of lignite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and A kind of sulfonic acid bis sodium salt (S2) and the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were selected. A binary model of surfactant/lignite adsorption system and a ternary model of water/surfactant/lignite system were constructed, and a series of properties such as adsorption configuration, interaction energy, order parameters, relative concentration distribution, number of hydrogen bonds, etc., were analyzed. The results showed that the adsorption strength of S2 on the surface of lignite was higher than that of SDS. …

A Comparative Study Of Machine Learning Methods For Automated Identification Of Radioisotopes Using Nai Gamma-Ray Spectra, S. M. Galib, P. K. Bhowmik, A. V. Avachat, H. K. Lee

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article presents a study on the state-of-the-art methods for automated radioactive material detection and identification, using gamma-ray spectra and modern machine learning methods. The recent developments inspired this in deep learning algorithms, and the proposed method provided better performance than the current state-of-the-art models. Machine learning models such as: fully connected, recurrent, convolutional, and gradient boosted decision trees, are applied under a wide variety of testing conditions, and their advantage and disadvantage are discussed. Furthermore, a hybrid model is developed by combining the fully connected and convolutional neural network, which shows the best performance among the different machine learning …

Numerous geochemical anomalies exist at the K-Pg boundary that indicate the addition of extraterrestrial materials; however, none fingerprint volatilization, a key process that occurs during large bolide impacts. Stable Zn isotopes are an exceptional indicator of volatility-related processes, where partial vaporization of Zn leaves the residuum enriched in its heavy isotopes. Here, we present Zn isotope data for sedimentary rock layers of the K-Pg boundary, which display heavier Zn isotope compositions and lower Zn concentrations relative to surrounding sedimentary rocks, the carbonate platform at the impact site, and most carbonaceous chondrites. Neither volcanic events nor secondary alteration during weathering and …

Purpose: Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Method: Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in …

Purpose: The main scientific goal of LHAASO-WCDA is to survey gamma-ray sources with energy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. To observe high-energy shower events, especially to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 10 PeV, a dynamic range extension system (WCDA++) is designed to use a 1.5-inch PMT with a dynamic range of four orders of magnitude for each cell in WCDA-1. Method: The dynamic range is extended by using these PMTs to measure the effective charge density in the core region of air shower events, which is an important parameter for identifying the composition …

Recoil pressure is a critical factor affecting the melt pool dynamics during Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) processes. Recoil pressure depresses the melt pool. When the recoil pressure is low, thermal conduction and capillary forces may be inadequate to provide proper fusion between layers. However, excessive recoil pressure can produce a keyhole inside the melt pool, which is associated with gas porosity. Direct recoil pressure measurements are challenging because it is localized over an area proportionate to the laser spot size producing a force in the mN range. This paper reports a vibration-based approach to quantify the recoil force exerted …

Two-dimensional (2D) material of silicon phosphide (SiP) has recently been shown as a promising optical material with large band gap, fast photoresponse and strong anisotropy. However, the nonlinear optical properties of 2D SiP have not been investigated yet. Here, the thickness-dependent in-plane anisotropic third-harmonic generation (THG) from the mechanically exfoliated 2D layered SiP flakes is reported. The crystal orientation of the SiP flake is determined by the angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy. The angular dependence of the THG emission with respect to the incident linear polarization is found to be strongly anisotropic with the two-fold polarization dependence pattern. Furthermore, the effect …

Vertically stacked van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have introduced a unique way to engineer optical and electronic responses in multifunctional photonic and quantum devices. However, the technical challenges associated with the artificially fabricated vertical heterostructures have emerged as a bottleneck to restrict their proficient utilization, which emphasizes the necessity of exploring naturally occurring vdW heterostructures. As one type of naturally occurring vdW heterostructures, franckeite has recently attracted significant interest in optoelectronic applications, but the understanding of light-matter interactions in such layered mineral is still very limited especially in the nonlinear optical regime. Herein, the anisotropic Raman scattering and third-harmonic generation …

Multi-element two-dimensional (2D) materials hold great promise in the context of tailoring the physical and chemical properties of the materials via stoichiometric engineering. However, the rational and controllable synthesis of complex 2D materials remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the preparation of large-area thin quaternary 2D material flakes via mechanical exfoliation from a naturally occurring bulk crystal named gillulyite. Furthermore, the anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical properties including anisotropic Raman scattering, linear dichroism, and anisotropic third-harmonic generation (THG) of the exfoliated gillulyite flakes are investigated. The observed highly anisotropic optical properties originate from the reduced in-plane crystal symmetry. Additionally, the …

Multi-element layered materials enable the use of stoichiometric variation to engineer their optical responses at subwavelength scale. In this regard, naturally occurring van der Waals minerals allow us to harness a wide range of chemical compositions, crystal structures and lattice symmetries for layered materials under atomically thin limit. Recently, one type of naturally occurring sulfide mineral, ternary teallite has attained significant interest in the context of thermoelectric, optoelectronic, and photovoltaic applications, but understanding of light-matter interactions in such ternary teallite crystals is scarcely available. Herein, polarization-dependent linear and nonlinear optical responses in mechanically exfoliated teallite crystals are investigated including anisotropic …

Reaction Microscope For Investigating Ionization Dynamics Of Weakly Bound Alkali Dimers, N. Kurz, Daniel Fischer, T. Pfeifer, A. Dorn

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on the implementation of a far-off-resonant, optical dipole force trap in a reaction microscope combined with a magneto-optical trap. Kinematically complete multi-photon ionization experiments were performed on optically trapped 6Li atoms and photo-associated 6Li2 molecules in their highest vibrational state. The apparatus allows us to distinguish different ionization mechanisms related to the presence of the IR field of the optical dipole trap that can occur during ionization of 6Li and 6Li2 in strong fields. In a series of proof-of-principle experiments, we detect weakly bound dimers via three-photon ionization with femtosecond pulses (τ = 30 fs) at a central …

In this study, the effects of surface roughness and pore characteristics on fatigue lives of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) Ti–6Al–4V parts were investigated. The 197 fatigue bars were printed using the same laser power but with varied scanning speeds. These actions led to variations in the geometries of microscale pores, and such variations were characterized using micro-computed tomography. To generate differences in surface roughness in fatigue bars, half of the samples were grit-blasted and the other half were machined. Fatigue behaviors were analyzed with respect to surface roughness and statistics of the pores. For the grit-blasted samples, the contour …

The current effort involved investigation into the anisotropy of AISI 304L fabricated through laser powder bed fusion. Charpy V‐notch specimens made from material fabricated at three different build orientations were tested and analyzed. A statistically significant difference among the toughness values indicates the presence of anisotropy within the additively manufactured material. While the lowest toughness was found in vertically built specimens, the horizontal specimens were found to exhibit the highest toughness. From the fracture surfaces, an atypical mode of failure was observed. Exclusive crack propagation along the interlayer track boundaries was observed. The toughness variation correlated with the ease of …

Ubiquitous to most molecular scattering methods is the challenge to retrieve bond distance and angle from the scattering signals since this requires convergence of pattern matching algorithms or fitting methods. This problem is typically exacerbated when imaging larger molecules or for dynamic systems with little a priori knowledge. Here, we employ laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) which is a powerful means to determine the precise atomic configuration of an isolated gas-phase molecule with picometre spatial and attosecond temporal precision. We introduce a simple molecular retrieval method, which is based only on the identification of critical points in the oscillating molecular interference …

Machine learning has emerged as a popular and powerful approach for solving problems in astrophysics. We review applications of machine learning techniques for the analysis of ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) detector data. Examples include techniques for improving the sensitivity of Advanced Laser Interferometer GW Observatory and Advanced Virgo GW searches, methods for fast measurements of the astrophysical parameters of GW sources, and algorithms for reduction and characterization of non-astrophysical detector noise. These applications demonstrate how machine learning techniques may be harnessed to enhance the science that is possible with current and future GW detectors.

Triply Differential Positron And Electron Impact Ionization Of Argon: Systematic Features And Scaling, Robert D. Dubois, O. G. De Lucio

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Triply differential data are presented for the 200 eV positron and electron impact ionization of argon. Six electron emission energies between 2.6 and 19 eV, and for scattering angles of 2, 3, and 4 degrees cover a momentum transfer range of 0.16 to 0.31 a.u. The binary and recoil intensities are fitted using a double peak structure in both regions, which, for the present kinematic conditions, are unresolved. The fitted peak intensities and angular positions are shown to have systematic dependences as a function of the momentum transfer and kinematic emission angle, respectively, and illustrate projectile charge effects. A comparison …

Chiral superconductors have been proposed as one pathway to realize Majorana normal fluid at its boundary. However, the long-sought 2D and 3D chiral superconductors with edge and surface Majorana normal fluid are yet to be conclusively found. Here, we report evidence for a chiral spin-triplet pairing state of UTe2 with surface normal fluid response. The microwave surface impedance of the UTe2 crystal was measured and converted to complex conductivity, which is sensitive to both normal and superfluid responses. The anomalous residual normal fluid conductivity supports the presence of a significant normal fluid response. The superfluid conductivity follows the …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Healthcare and education systems have been identified by various national and international organizations as the main pillars of communities' stability. Understanding the correlation between these main social services institutions is critical to determining the tipping point of communities following natural disasters. Despite being defined as social services stability indicators, to date, no studies have been conducted to determine the level of interdependence between schools and hospitals and their collective influence on their recoveries following extreme events. In this study, we devise an agent-based model to investigate the complex interaction between healthcare and education networks and their overall recovery, while considering …

Removal of dyes through adsorption from wastewater has gained substantial interest in recent years, especially in development of hydrogel-based adsorbents, owing to their easy use and economical nature. The aim of the present study was to design a super-adsorbent hydrogel based on sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) monomer for removal of dyes like methylene blue (MB). NaSS displays both an aromatic ring and strongly ionic group in its monomer structure that can enhance adsorption capacity. Poly (sodium styrene sulfonate-co-dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels were prepared by solution free radical polymerization using gelatin meth acryloyl (GelMA) as crosslinker, creating a highly porous, three-dimensionally crosslinked polymer …

Streamflow predictions derived from a hydrologic model are subjected to many sources of errors, including uncertainties in meteorological inputs, representation of physical processes, and model parameters. To reduce the effects of these uncertainties and thus improve the accuracy of model prediction, the United States (U.S.) National Water Model (NWM) incorporates streamflow observations in the modeling framework and updates model-simulated values using the observed ones. This updating procedure is called streamflow data assimilation (DA). This study evaluates the prediction performance of streamflow DA realized in the NWM. We implemented the model using WRF-Hydro® with the NWM modeling elements and assimilated 15-min …

A New Dead-Time Determination Method For Gamma-Ray Detectors Using Attenuation Law, T. Akyurek

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study presents a new dead-time measurement method using the gamma attenuation law and generalized dead-time models for nuclear gamma-ray detectors. The dead-time of the NaI(Tl) detection system was obtained to validate the new dead-time determination method using very thin lead and polyethylene absorbers. Non-paralyzing dead-time was found to be 8.39 μs, and paralyzing dead-time was found to be 8.35 μs using lead absorber for NaI(Tl) scintillator detection system. These dead-time values are consistent with the previously reported dead-time values for scintillator detection systems. The gamma build-up factor's contribution to the dead-time was neglected because a very thin material was …

Establishing and approaching the fundamental limit of orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) multiplexing are necessary and increasingly urgent for current multiple-input multiple-output research. In this work, we elaborate the fundamental limit in terms of independent scattering channels (or the degrees of freedom of scattered fields) through angular-spectral analysis, in conjunction with a rigorous Green's function method. The scattering-channel limit is universal for arbitrary spatial-mode multiplexing, which is launched by a planar electromagnetic device, such as antenna, metasurface, etc., with a predefined physical size. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the limit by a phase-only metasurface hologram that transforms …

Due to stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations, all electronic devices need to go through rigorous radiated emission tests before launching to market. Thus, efficient, accurate, and cheap characterization approaches are quite of interest. Instead of utilizing the time-consuming and expensive direct far-field measurement, in this work, a novel methodology on the basis of numerical Green's function (NGF) is proposed to acquire the parasitic EM emissions from PCBs placed in a shielding enclosure with ventilation slots. Referring to Schelkunoff's equivalence principle, the whole modeling procedure can be decomposed into two steps in order to obtain the emissions in the entire space. …
