Iterative Reconstruction Excursions For Baryon Acoustic Oscillations And Beyond, Hee Jong Seo, Atsuhisa Ota, Marcel Schmittfull, Shun Saito, Florian Beutler

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The density field reconstruction technique has been widely used for recovering the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in galaxy surveys that has been degraded due to non-linearities. Recent studies advocated adopting iterative steps to impro v e the recovery much be yond that of the standard technique. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a few selected iterative re- construction techniques focusing on the BAO and the broad-band shape of the two-point clustering. We include redshift-space distortions, halo bias, and shot noise and inspect the components of the reconstructed field in Fourier space and in configuration space using both …

Information-Based Particle Flow With Convergence Control, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars Apr 2022

Information-Based Particle Flow With Convergence Control, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new formulation of the Gaussian particle flow filter is presented using an information theoretic approach. The developed information-based form advances the Gaussian particle flow framework in two ways: it imparts physical meaning to the flow dynamics and provides the ability to easily include modifications for a non-Bayesian update. An orbit determination simulation with high initial uncertainty is used to demonstrate the consistent, robust performance of the information flow filter in situations where the extended Kalman filter fails.

Effect Of Micro-Structural Dispersity Of Simo Ductile Iron On High Temperature Performance During Static Oxidation, Simon N. Lekakh, Asebi Bofah, Larry A. Godlewski, Mei Li

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High silicon and molybdenum (SiMo) ductile iron is commonly used for car exhaust systems, and its micro-structural dispersity depends on intrinsic parameters, which include alloy composition and inoculation efficiency, as well as extrinsic factors, such as casting wall thickness and molding material, which define cooling rate during solidification. Micro-structural dispersity is referred to as the degree of heterogeneity of sizes of structural constituencies within the microstructure. A variation in the micro-structural dispersity could impact the high temperature performance of SiMo ductile iron during static oxidation and transient thermo-mechanical loading conditions. In this study, static high temperature tests were performed on …

Topology-Based Accurate Modeling Of Current-Mode Voltage Regulator Modules For Power Distribution Network Design, Jingdong Sun, Yimajian Yan, Hanfeng Wang, Emil Chen, Ken Wu, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power distribution network (PDN) is essential in electronic systems to provide reliable power for load devices. Thus, modeling of PDNs in printed circuit boards and packages has been extensively studied in the past few decades. However, with the higher integration levels and operation bandwidths of modern voltage regulator module (VRM), there lacks an accurate model for transient load responses based on the widely used current-mode control topology. In this work, a topology-based behavior model, including both the power stage and control loops, is developed for the current-mode buck VRM. A novel method is also proposed to unify the modeling of …

Analyzing The Influence Of Imbalanced Two- Or Three-Wire Vhf Lisn On Radiated Emissions From Ac Cables, Hossein Rezaei, Morten Sorensen, Wei Huang, Daryl G. Beetner, David Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article investigates using imbalanced two- and three-wire terminations for ac main cables, as suggested by the standard group. These terminations provide the basis for a new line impedance stabilization network (LISN) whose objective is to improve test repeatability between labs while also providing better estimation of real-world emissions. Standard balanced LISNs do not reproduce the imbalanced terminations seen in practice. An imbalanced two- or three-wire very high-frequency LISN was built, which can handle up to 15 A on each line. The LISN operates from 30 to 200 MHz and provides greater than 50-dB isolation between the input and output. …

A Compact High-Isolation Wideband Three-Sector Linear Array, Sheng Wu, Lidong Chi, Fuhai Li, Francesco De Paulis, Yihong Qi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A compact and highly isolated three-sector linear array is proposed targeting point-to-point or point-to-multipoint data communication in Central Business District (CBD) and residential subdivision applications. It features wide bandwidth, high isolation among the units, low wind load, and low manufacturing and installation costs within the 400-500 MHz band. The driving element of the array unit is a wideband high-efficiency electromagnetic structure (WHEMS) applied in combination with the metal rods as passive elements for isolation purposes. The parasitic rod, shared by the adjacent units, decouples the mutual coupling by reducing the distance, which realizes not only the high isolation capability but …

Neurocognitive consequences of blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) pose significant concerns for military service members and veterans with the majority of "invisible injury." However, the underlying mechanism of such mild bTBI by low-intensity blast (LIB) exposure for long-term cognitive and mental deficits remains elusive. Our previous studies have shown that mice exposed to LIB result in nanoscale ultrastructural abnormalities in the absence of gross or apparent cellular damage in the brain. Here we tested the hypothesis that glutamatergic hyperexcitability may contribute to long-term learning deficits. Using brain slice electrophysiological recordings, we found an increase in averaged frequencies with a burst …

This study aims at the development of magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high performance concrete (MPC-UHPC). To this end, MPC paste phase was designed by using high magnesia-to-phosphate (M/P, 3.5) and low water-to-cement (W/C, 0.10–0.16) mass ratios, and certain amounts of ultra-fine fly ash (UFA, 5%–15%). Fresh and hardened properties, and microstructure of the developed MPC-UHPC were evaluated, and compared with those of conventional UHPC as well. Test results showed that lower W/C resulted in higher mechanical strengths and lower drying shrinkage, but the sharp decrease of workability and increase of autogenous shrinkage. At a constant W/C, the addition of UFA effectively …

This article presents a novel method to design multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antennas based on characteristic mode analysis (CMA), which is different from using individual excitation of each characteristic mode for high isolation. The CMA is performed to design a pair of symmetric slots on two connected dipole antennas (a MIMO dipole pair), so that two desired characteristic modes can be generated at the same frequency, one of which is in common mode and the other in differential mode. Hence, when one antenna element is excited, the two characteristic modes combine and cancel each other at the other antenna element, leading to …

Organic additives are required for alkaline zincate plating baths to obtain an acceptable coating on steel for corrosion protection. The effects and possible interactions of three commercial additives (Eldiem Carrier, Eldiem Booster, and Bright Enhancer 2x on zinc electrodeposition from a high-concentration alkaline zincate bath were investigated. Visually acceptable deposits were produced within the current density range of 130 to 430 A m−2 for most additive conditions examined. Over concentration ranges examined, decreasing the booster concentration led to brighter zinc deposits, and an interaction between the carrier and the booster was detected. The additives fostered the formation of compact and …

Evolution Of High-Frequency Instabilities In The Presence Of Azimuthally Compact Crossflow Vortex Pattern Over A Yawed Cone, Meelan Choudhari, Fei Li, Pedro Paredes, Lian Duan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hypersonic boundary-layer flows over a circular cone at a moderate yaw angle can support strong crossflow instability away from the windward and leeward rays on the plane of symmetry. Due to the more efficient excitation of stationary crossflow vortices by surface roughness, a possible path to transition in such flows corresponds to rapid amplification of the high-frequency instabilities sustained in the presence of finite amplitude stationary crossflow vortices. This paper presents a computational analysis of crossflow instability over a 7-degree half-angle, yawed circular cone in a Mach 6 free stream. Specifically, the nonlinear evolution of an azimuthally localized crossflow vortex …

Local thermal history can significantly vary in parts during metal Additive Manufacturing (AM), leading to local defects. However, the sequential layer-by-layer nature of AM facilitates in-situ part voxelmetric observations that can be used to detect and correct these defects for part qualification and quality control. The challenge is to relate this local radiometric data with local defect information to estimate process error likelihood in future builds. This paper uses a Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) camera to record the temperature history for parts manufactured with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) processes. The porosity from a cylindrical specimen is measured by ex-situ micro-computed …

Evaluating The Low-Temperature Properties Of Asphalt Binders Extracted From Mixtures Containing Recycled Materials, Eslam Deef-Allah, Magdy Abdelrahman Mar 2022

Evaluating The Low-Temperature Properties Of Asphalt Binders Extracted From Mixtures Containing Recycled Materials, Eslam Deef-Allah, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of recycled materials − such as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) − in asphalt mixtures reduces natural resources demands and decreases materials dumped in landfills. The aged binders included in the recycled materials alter binders' low-temperature properties included in asphalt mixtures. Therefore, asphalt binders were extracted from asphalt mixtures collected from the field as cores. Due to the limited amount of extracted asphalt binders (EABs), a dynamic shear rheometer was used to examine the low-temperature properties [e.g., true temperature (Tt), continuous temperature (Tc), and delta continuous temperature (ΔTc)]. Using recycled materials in asphalt mixtures …

Stability For Generalized Caputo Proportional Fractional Delay Integro-Differential Equations, Martin Bohner, Snezhana Hristova

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A scalar nonlinear integro-differential equation with time-variable and bounded delays and generalized Caputo proportional fractional derivative is considered. The main goal of this paper is to study the stability properties of the zero solution. Results are given concerning stability, exponential stability, asymptotic stability, and boundedness of solutions. The investigations are based on an application of a quadratic Lyapunov function, its generalized Caputo proportional derivative, and a modification of the Razumikhin approach. Some auxiliary properties of the generalized Caputo proportional derivative are proved. Five illustrative examples are included.

The SWGO Collaboration is in the process of designing and prototyping a wide field of view, high duty cycle complements to CTA and the existing ground-based particle detectors of the Northern Hemisphere (HAWC and LHAASO). In this contribution, we will compare the various technological options for designing the detector and present an overarching system design accommodating them. We will introduce a feasible reference configuration that is used for the first large-scale simulations and cost estimates and show ongoing prototyping work focused on reaching a maintenance-free and cost-effective detector.

Thanks to recent technological development, a new generation of cosmic ray experiments have been developed with more sensitivity to study these particles in the primary energy interval from 10 TeV to 1 PeV, such as HAWC. Due to its design and high altitude, the HAWC gamma-ray and cosmic ray observatory can provide a bridge between the data from direct and indirect cosmic ray detectors. In 2017 the HAWC collaboration published its first result on the total energy spectrum of cosmic rays, which covers the range from 10 to 500 TeV. This work updates the previous result by extending the energy …

The Cygnus Cocoon region is a complex region containing an OB star cluster that is prominent in the TeV energy range. Located in this region is 3HWC J2031+415, a significant TeV gamma-ray source whose emission is possibly associated with 2 components, the Cygnus OB2 star cluster and a pulsar wind nebula (PWN). In this work, several modelling methods are presented to best describe the emission. These models disentangle emission believed to be from the Cocoon and isolate the component emitted by the probable PWN. I will present several spectral models to describe the emission of the probable PWN using the …

With a mass of approximately ∼1012 solar masses, the Galactic Halo is the closest known large dark matter halo and a prime candidate for indirect dark matter detection. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) is a high energy (300 GeV to 100 TeV) gamma ray detector located in central Mexico. HAWC operates via the water Cherenkov technique and has both a wide field of view of ∼2 sr and a >95% duty cycle, making it ideal for analysis of highly extended sources. We made use of these properties of HAWC, and a new background-estimation technique optimized for extended sources …

We present the observation of an anomalous increment of the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux observed by the HAWC array during October 2016. We propose that this anisotropy of the GCR flux was caused by a magnetic flux rope (MFR) i. e., by the helicoidal magnetic field of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection observed at 1 AU at the same time. We computed the trajectory of protons with energy in the range of 10 to 60 GeV, traveling inside the helicoidal magnetic field observed in situ. The direction of these particles changes towards the axis of the MFR resulting in …

The Cygnus Cocoon is the first gamma-ray superbubble powered by a massive stellar association, the OB2 association. It was postulated that the combined effects of the stellar winds of all the massive O-type stars of the OB2 association can accelerate the cosmic rays to PeV energy in the Cocoon. The conclusive proof of acceleration to PeV energy in the Cocoon will identify the stellar association as a PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, known as PeVatron. However, the Cocoon has been previously studied only up to 10 TeV. In this contribution, using 1343 days of High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory data, we …

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is a wide-field-of-view gamma-ray observatory that is optimized to detect gamma rays between 300 GeV and several hundred TeV. The HAWC Collaboration recently released their third source catalog (3HWC), which contains 65 sources. One of these sources, the ultra-high-energy gamma-ray source 3HWC J1908+063, may exhibit a hardening of the spectral index at the highest energies (above 56 TeV). At least two populations of particles are needed to satisfactorily explain the highest energy emission. This second component could be leptonic or hadronic in origin. If it is hadronic in origin, it would imply the presence …

Nowadays the implementation of artificial neural networks in high-energy physics has obtained excellent results on improving signal detection. In this work we propose to use neural networks (NNs) for event discrimination in HAWC. This observatory is a water Cherenkov gamma-ray detector that in recent years has implemented algorithms to identify horizontal muon tracks. However, these algorithms are not very efficient. In this work we describe the implementation of three NNs: two based on image classification and one based on object detection. Using these algorithms, we obtain an increase in the number of identified tracks. The results of this study could …
