"In the Joplin region are enormous piles of tailings, that for waste material, run very high in blende. This is due mainly to the temporary character of the mills which are built with more regard to low first cost than to receiving a high percentage of extraction. As a result we have some piles of tailings containing from 200,000 to 300,000 tons of materials that will average from about 2 to 3% zinc, and all crushed so as to pass through about #2 mesh"--Page 1.

"The constituents of coal or enriched water gas which give it value as a light producer are known collectively as "illuminants". They consist essentially of ethylene and propylene and in the analysis are determined by means of fuming sulphuric acid. This method of determination is very unsatisfactory as it is impossible to ascertain the relative percentages of the two gases, only the total being found. "The purpose in mind, in writing this thesis, is to select the most economical method of treating the ores found in the Ajo Basin. The ore on the surface, and to a depth of thirty to forty feet, is almost exclusively carbonates in a silicious six gangue. Immediately underlying the carbonate ore comes the sulphide ore in its natural state, lying below any action of the elements, and is in various forms. "It has been observed in practical and experimental work, that there is a variation in the fire assay values of some sulphide ores and mattes by the metallic iron method due to the proportions of the reagents used. This is shown in a particular manner in the use of sodium carbonate. there is also a corresponding variation in the amount of matte separating out in the assay by this method.
