In this paper, natural organic honey embedded with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied as a resistive switching material for biodegradable nonvolatile memory in emerging neuromorphic systems. CNTs were dispersed in a honey-water solution with the concentration of 0.2 wt.% CNT and 30 wt.% honey. The final honey-CNT-water mixture was spin-coated and dried into a thin film sandwiched in between Cu bottom electrode and Al top electrode to form a honey-CNT based resistive switching memory (RSM). Surface morphology, electrical characteristics and current conduction mechanism were investigated. The results show that although CNTs formed agglomerations in the dried honey-CNT film, both switching …

Since the first dendrimer was reported in 1978 by Fritz Vögtle, dendrimer research has grown exponentially, from synthesis to application in the past four decades. The distinct structure characteristics of dendrimers include nanoscopic size, multi-functionalized surface, high branching, cavernous interior, and so on, making dendrimers themselves ideal drug delivery vehicles. This mini review article provides a brief overview of dendrimer's history and properties and the latest developments of dendrimers as drug delivery systems. This review focuses on the latest progress in the applications of dendrimers as drug and gene carriers, including 1) active drug release strategies to dissociate drug/gene from …

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) affect nearly all systems of the human body due to their role in protein synthesis and functionality. These reversible and irreversible modifications control the structure, localization, activity, and properties of proteins. For this reason, PTMs are essential in regulating cellular processes and maintaining homeostasis. Diseases such as Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and many others have been linked to dysfunctions of PTMs. Recent research has also shown that irregularities in PTMs can be linked to hearing loss, including age-related hearing loss (ARHL) – the number one communication disorder and one of the top neurodegenerative diseases in our …

It remains a great challenge to achieve polar order in organic molecular crystals because anti-parallel alignment of side-by-side molecules is intrinsically preferred. We have addressed this problem with a rational design that focuses on the polar stacking of parallel beloamphiphile monolayers (PBAMs) with strong lateral quadrupole-quadrupole attractions. We employ arene-arene interactions as lateral synthons. The first successes were achieved with unsymmetrical donor (X), acceptor (Y) substituted acetophenone azines which form polar PBAMs with double T-contacts between the azines. Near-perfect alignment was achieved with the methoxy series of (MeO, Y)-azines with Y=Cl, Br, I. Here, we report on the synthesis, the …

Cannizzarite is a naturally occurring mineral formed by van der Waals (vdW) stacking of alternating layers of PbS-like and Bi2S3-like two-dimensional (2D) materials. Although the PbS-type and Bi2S3-type 2D material layers are structurally isotropic individually, the forced commensuration between these two types of layers while forming the heterostructure of cannizzarite induces strong structural anisotropy. Here we demonstrate the mechanical exfoliation of natural cannizzarite mineral to obtain thin vdW heterostructures of PbS-type and Bi2S3-type atomic layers. The structural anisotropy induced anisotropic optical properties of thin cannizzarite flakes are explored through angle-resolved polarized Raman scattering, linear dichroism, and polarization-dependent anisotropic third-harmonic generation. …

In this article, a novel method is proposed to design a hybrid network (HN) to increase isolation and shape radiation patterns for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems. The HN is a combination of a decoupling feeding network and a defected ground network, which are populated by several surface-mounted reactive components whose reactances are determined by the N-ary optimization algorithm. Two decoupling examples are presented to validate the design methodology and elaborate on the design procedure. Measurement results show that the HN helps to realize impedance matching with reflection coefficients below -10 dB, isolation improvement from -5.4/-8.9 dB to below -20 …

Early on-site diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) will provide the best guidance for clinical practice. However, existing methods and sensors cannot provide sufficiently detailed physical information related to the blunt force impact. In the present work, a smart helmet with a single embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is developed, which can monitor complex blunt force impact events in real time under both wired and wireless modes. The transient oscillatory signal "fingerprint" can specifically reflect the impact-caused physical deformation of the local helmet structure. By combination with machine learning algorithms, the unknown transient impact can be recognized quickly …

This paper reports on the γ-ray properties of the 2018 Galactic nova V392 Per, spanning photon energies ∼0.1 GeV-100 TeV by combining observations from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the HAWC Observatory. As one of the most rapidly evolving γ-ray signals yet observed for a nova, GeV γ-rays with a power-law spectrum with an index Γ = 2.0 ± 0.1 were detected over 8 days following V392 Per's optical maximum. HAWC observations constrain the TeV γ-ray signal during this time and also before and after. We observe no statistically significant evidence of TeV γ-ray emission from V392 Per, but …

Resistive Switching Characteristics Of Fullerene (C60) In Polymannose Thin Film, Kuan Yew Cheong, Ilias Ait Tayeb, Feng Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of C60 incorporated in polymannose-based resistive switching memory have been systematically investigated for the first time in bioorganic-based resistive switching memory. C60 with different concentrations (0–7 wt.%) is dispersed in polymannose precursor, drop-casted on ITO/PET substrate, and dried to form a thin film. Electrochemically inert Au–Pd is used as top electrode. The devices with embedded C60 show better endurance and stability. Read memory window decreases and ON/OFF ratio increases as the concentration of C60 increases. Stable retention time up to 10 years is achieved for all of the devices except the one with 7 wt.% C60. Based on …

Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that causes nosocomial infections, especially among immunocompromised individuals. The rise of multidrug resistant strains of A. baumannii has limited the use of standard antibiotics, highlighting a need for new drugs that exploit novel mechanisms of pathogenicity. Disrupting iron acquisition by inhibiting the biosynthesis of iron-chelating molecules (siderophores) secreted by the pathogen is a potential strategy for developing new antibiotics. Here we investigated FbsI, an N-hydroxylating monooxygenase involved in the biosynthesis of fimsbactin A, the major siderophore produced by A. baumannii. FbsI was characterized using steady-state and transient-state kinetics, spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and small-angle …

The Effects Of Methanol Clustering On Methanol-Water Nucleation, Tong Sun, Gerald Wilemski, Barbara N. Hale, Barbara E. Wyslouzil

The formation of subcritical methanol clusters in the vapor phase is known to complicate the analysis of nucleation measurements. Here, we investigate how this process affects the onset of binary nucleation as dilute water-methanol mixtures in nitrogen carrier gas expand in a supersonic nozzle. These are the first reported data for water-methanol nucleation in an expansion device. We start by extending an older monomer-dimer-tetramer equilibrium model to include larger clusters, relying on Helmholtz free energy differences derived from Monte Carlo simulations. The model is validated against the pressure/temperature measurements of Laksmono et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 13, 5855 (2011)] …

Location spoofing attack deceiving a Wi-Fi positioning system has been studied for over a decade. However, it has been challenging to construct a practical spoofing attack in urban areas with dense coverage of legitimate Wi-Fi APs. This paper identifies the vulnerability of the Google Geolocation API, which returns the location of a mobile device based on the information of the Wi-Fi access points that the device can detect. We show that this vulnerability can be exploited by the attacker to reveal the black-box localization algorithms adopted by the Google Wi-Fi positioning system and easily launch the location spoofing attack in …

In this paper, we establish the fully decoupled numerical methods by utilizing scalar auxiliary variable approach for solving Cahn–Hilliard–Darcy system. We exploit the operator splitting technique to decouple the coupled system and Galerkin finite element method in space to construct the fully discrete formulation. The developed numerical methods have the features of second order accuracy, totally decoupling, linearization, and unconditional energy stability. The unconditionally stability of the two proposed decoupled numerical schemes are rigorously proved. Abundant numerical results are reported to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of proposed numerical methods.

Emerging evidence implicates the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor subtype 1 (S1PR1) in the development of neuropathic pain. Continued investigation of the signaling pathways downstream of S1PR1 are needed to support development of S1PR1 antagonists. In rodents, intrathecal (i.th.) injection of SEW2871, a selective S1PR1 agonist, activates the nod-like receptor family, pyrin domain containing 3 inflammasome, increases interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and causes behavioral hypersensitivity. I.th. injection of a IL-1β receptor antagonist blocks SEW2871-induced hypersensitivity, suggesting that IL-1β contributes to S1PR1's actions. Interestingly, previous studies have suggested that IL-1β increases the expression/activity of adenosine kinase (ADK), a key regulator of adenosine signaling at its receptors …

The advent of the edge computing network paradigm places the computational and storage resources away from the data centers and closer to the edge of the network largely comprising the heterogeneous IoT devices collecting huge volumes of data. This paradigm has led to considerable improvement in network latency and bandwidth usage over the traditional cloud-centric paradigm. However, the next generation networks continue to be stymied by their inability to achieve adaptive, energy-efficient, timely data transfer in a dynamic and failure-prone environment - the very optimization challenges that are dealt with by biological networks as a consequence of millions of years …

We propose two mass and heat energy conservative, unconditionally stable, decoupled numerical algorithms for solving the Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes–Darcy–Boussinesq system that models thermal convection of two-phase flows in superposed free flow and porous media. The schemes totally decouple the computation of the Cahn–Hilliard equation, the Darcy equations, the heat equation, the Navier–Stokes equations at each time step, and thus significantly reducing the computational cost. We rigorously show that the schemes are conservative and energy-law preserving. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the algorithms.

5G technology is foreseen to have a heterogeneous architecture with the various computational capability, and radio-enabled service providers (SPs) and service requesters (SRs), working altogether in a cellular model. However, the coexistence of heterogeneous network model spawns several research challenges such as diverse SRs with uneven service deadlines, interference management, and revenue maximization of non-uniform computational capacities enabled SPs. Thus, we propose a coexistence of heterogeneous SPs and SRs enabled cellular 5G network and formulate the SPs' revenue maximization via resource allocation, considering different kinds of interference, data rate, and latency altogether as an optimization problem and further propose a …

Fatigue damage is a major threat to the safety and integrity of many steel structures. Steel hydraulic structures (SHS), in particular, experience fatigue loading during operation and are exposed to harsh environmental conditions that can further reduce fatigue life through mechanisms. The traditional inspection and repair process for SHS is time-consuming and leads to economic losses. Studies investigating the behavior and advantages of using bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) to repair fatigue cracks in SHS are lacking. The main objectives of this study are to increase the bonding of CFRP, investigate the effectiveness of different fiber-reinforced polymers, and test different …

Replicating data across geo-distributed datacenters is usually necessary for large scale cloud services to achieve high locality, durability and availability. One of the major challenges in such geo-replicated data services lies in consistency maintenance, which usually suffers from long latency due to costly coordination across datacenters. Among others, transaction chopping is an effective and efficient approach to address this challenge. However, existing chopping is conducted statically during programming, which is stubborn and complex for developers. In this article, we propose Dynamic Transaction Chopping (DTC), a novel technique that does transaction chopping and determines piecewise execution in a dynamic and automatic …

Pattern formation in the classical and fractional Schnakenberg equations is studied to understand the nonlocal effects of anomalous diffusion. Starting with linear stability analysis, we find that if the activator and inhibitor have the same diffusion power, the Turing instability space depends only on the ratio of diffusion coefficients (Formula presented.). However, smaller diffusive powers might introduce larger unstable wave numbers with wider band, implying that the patterns may be more chaotic in the fractional cases. We then apply a weakly nonlinear analysis to predict the parameter regimes for spot, stripe, and mixed patterns in the Turing space. Our numerical …
Wetting Of Paper Towels: A Method To Determine The Two-Dimensional Absorption Capacity, Hossein Abedsoltan
Wetting Of Paper Towels: A Method To Determine The Two-Dimensional Absorption Capacity, Hossein Abedsoltan
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study proposes a method to determine the two-dimensional absorption capacity of paper towels. Individual plies were tested to minimize the effects of transverse wicking on wetting. The method involves arbitrary point source injection of liquid into the towel surface while recording microscopic images of the wetted areas. The samples were selected from the main manufacturing processes: conventional wet pressing and through-air drying. Wetting graphs that illustrate the dynamic and static wetting behaviors were generated. The driving force was found to have a negligible effect on the maximum wetted area. The maximum wetted area and the paper grammage were used …

Froth feature extraction plays a significant role in the monitoring and control of the flotation process. Image-based soft sensors have received a great deal of interest in the flotation process due to their low-cost and non-intrusive properties. This study proposes data-driven soft sensor models based on froth images to predict the key performance indicators of the flotation process. The ability of multiple linear regression (MLR), the backpropagation neural network (BPNN), the k-means clustering algorithm, and the convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the amount of sulfur removal from iron ore concentrate in the column flotation process was examined. A total …
