"The more or less impure iron bearing mineral occurs mixed with a very tenacious clay, in which are also found chert, cretaceous quartz pebbles, pockets of sand, masses of pebbles and sand cemented by hydrous iron oxide, (which in some cases partly replaces the silica) and several varieties of fossils, such as crinoids etc. The impurities mentioned are often an integral part of the ore particles, and are present in varying quantities thruout [sic] the deposit. "In some of the pine regions of the Ozark Mountains, a considerable portion of the country is rolling and rough, comprising a succession of hills and hollows. The most efficient method of logging such a tract is obtained by locating the logging road so as to secure a down grade haul for the logs, with consequent up grade return for the empty cars. This necessitates locating the main line of the railroad along the principal creek, and then laying spurs up the different tributary creeks as they are met. "Concentration of the Joplin slimes by means of flotation is a subject receiving considerable attention at the present time, due to high price of zinc. These slimes are the accumulation of the finer particles of the ore during the milling process, and their zinc content is well worth considering. The practice in the past has been to sluice these slimes into the tailing pond, as no economical method of saving the zinc had been employed. "The problem of the Mining Engineer and Metallurgical Engineer who wishes to treat the slimes and fine sands of a complex ore is the recovery and separation of minerals so as to render a subsequent treatment of any mineral profitable. The minerals must be separated into groups which can be treated by different processes, because a combination of numerous minerals is extremely undesirable at the smelting plant. "Flotation is a new step in the separation of valuable minerals from gangue. This process has only been in commercial use for about six years. There has been several theories advances as to how the ore is concentrated, and the theory that is now usually accepted is that the oil covers or wets the sulphide mineral particle and does not the gangue; and this mineral particle, by means of induced aid is concentrated on the surface.
