"The Higueras district, in the State of Coahuila, Mexico, is little known even in Mexico; and it is probably safe to say that not one out of every hundred engineers in the United States has even heart of it. This is easily accounted for by the fact that the district is small and relatively unimportant economically. "The most important coal producing district of the state as well as the oldest in point of age of production is that section of the coal bearing formations located in Crawford and Cherokee county Kansas, which also extends into Barton county, Missouri.
The district has a surface area of about 260 to 300 square miles. The eastern boundary of the district is the outcrop of the lower coal bed known as the Weir-Pittsburg bed. "The Kennecott Copper Corporation mines and the adjoining Mother Lode Coalition Co. mine, which the Kennecott Copper Corporation controls and operates as an integral part of their Kennecott, Alaska camp, are situated in the Nizina Mining District, 196 miles inland from Cordova, Alaska, the tide-water shipping point. The first claims were discovered in 1900, and these later became the property of the Kennecott Copper Corporation.
