"It is customary for highway departments to set up certain finances in addition to the contract price to take care of engineering and slight overruns in the contract quantities. Generally a certain percentage of the contract price is used. The Missouri Highway Commission follow the practice of setting up 10% of the contract price to finance the engineering, contingencies, and slight overruns. The term "engineering" as referred to in this paper consists of the salaries and incidental expenses of the project engineer and his assistants, project office rent, and transportation. "Recent work, (1933-34) in southeastern Missouri by the Missouri Geological Survey has shown that deposits of bleaching clay occur in the Porters Creek formation of Tertiary age. Various localities in Scott and Stoddard counties are described, in which favorable conditions for development exist. The method of testing the clay for bleaching power is treated briefly. "There is one factor that is responsible for much of the failure of refractories in furnaces and other metallurgical processes and boilers, namely spalling. Many times this action has been the cause of roofs to cave in, side walls to slump, and bungs to fail. Consequently it is a factor that is of utmost importance. The erosion and slag effects are also of greatest importance to refractory stability. Spalling, as referred to refractories, is defined as the breaking or crushing of the unit due to thermal, mechanical, or structural stresses, presenting newly exposed surfaces of the residual mass. "The wide spread use of American kaolins and ball clays has been frowned upon by the majority of white-ware manufactures because the product resulting from their use in most cases has a color which is inferior to ware produced from English raw materials. This inferior color is generally attributed to the presence of a small amount of iron in the American clays. If some inexpensive chemical addition could be made which would eliminate the iron stain or in some way mask it, a wider market could be found in the white-ware industry for the domestic clays.
