"Special conditions encountered in much foreign work make it necessary to consider many factors which are not encountered in domestic programs of geophysical exploration for oil. Although extremely difficult working conditions are frequently met in domestic operations by company and contract crews, the large store of past experience, the availability of fresh supplies, replacement or new equipment, and the proximity of the helpful home office make their surmountal more or less a matter of routine. "The standard method for producing opacity and to some extend sic mattness in a glaze has always been the use of small amounts of tin oxide. This oxide, however, is very expensive and tends to fluccuate sic in price over a wide range due to world market conditions. The ceramic industry, therefore, has been searching for some substitutes for the tin oxide with some success. "Early in the year of 1937, the company employing the writer decided to reopen an old mining property located in Kansas, one and one-quarter miles west of Waco, Missouri. This property is known as the Grasselli No. 1, the lease of which had been acquired a short time prior to the depression of 1930. This property had been extensively mined on upper levels (195-foot, 176-foot, and 150-foot) by former operators and was a noteworthy producer of sphalerite. "The object of this study was to investigate the fundamental principles of producing an insulating brick by making the pore structure of air bubbles entrapped in a clay slip. Since a clay water mixture or any material containing entrapped air will loose this air when placed under vacuum, it is thought that placing the clay slips under a pressure would cause a considerable pore structure in the slip when the pressure is released. In the common method of making insulting brick, the fired brick must be ground to size as they cannot be molded to a definite size and shape. …

"The reactions of acid halides with metals are of interest because there seems to be a possibility of abstracting the halogens from two molecules of the halide, and thereby bringing about a coupling reaction; or the formation of an intermediate organo-metallic compound which would react with another molecule of the acid halide. The result of these reactions should be the formation of diacetyl and acetyl chloride and of dibenzoyl or benzil from benzoyl chloride.
