I. IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIMENS. The method of designation used hitherto is not sufficiently differentiated to identify the present and future specimens since specimens with identical bottom flanges but different top flanges are used. For this reason from now on each specimen is designated by symbols and figures, for example D-18-16-88a in which: D designates a series of beams, 18 designates the gage of mterial used for web and bottom flange, 16 designates the gage of material used for the top flange, 8 designates the depth of the section in inches, 8 designates the width of the bottom flange in inches, …

Essentials Of Rock Drill Design, Lister Merriken Cummings Jan 1940

Essentials Of Rock Drill Design, Lister Merriken Cummings

Professional Degree Theses

"The earliest history of the rock drill is obscure and only fragmentary evidence concerning it is recorded in the Patent Office. However, no other tool has played a more important part in mining and excavating work. There have been two general classes of pneumatic rock drills -- the reciprocating, or piston machine, and the hammer drill. Fowler played an important part in the early development of piston machines, and the first hammer drill was made in about 1895 by a man named Brothers"--History, page 1.

The Application Of Fluid Level Measurements To Oil Wells In Kansas, Charles Calvert Rodd Jan 1940

The Application Of Fluid Level Measurements To Oil Wells In Kansas, Charles Calvert Rodd

Professional Degree Theses

"The mechanics of determining fluid levels and a knowledge of the depth-to-fluid in a well are matters of general interest. To the oil-producer, however, such information is of value only as it may affect the operation of a well or reservoir"--Uses of Fluid-Level Measurements, page 9.

X-Ray Data Concerning Some Manganese-Copper Alloys, George Lester Mitsch Jan 1940

X-Ray Data Concerning Some Manganese-Copper Alloys, George Lester Mitsch

Bachelors Theses

"Until recently the only commercial method of producing metallic manganese in large ammounts sic was a pyrometallurgical process. Producing a metal of about 97% purity, it was not very satisfactory. With the advent of a process for producing a metal of 99.9 plus % purity electrolytically, introduced by the United States Bureau of Mines, for the first time was there a sufficient quantity of pure manganese available for alloy use. The manganese-copper system was chosen for study because of the inconsistencies in the reports of previous investigators, and because of the properties alloys of these components possess, such as magnetism, …

The Clark National Forest Of Missouri, Walter A. Werner Jan 1940

The Clark National Forest Of Missouri, Walter A. Werner

Professional Degree Theses

"The question might logically arise as to the appropriateness of a thesis with a forestry title being submitted for an engineering degree. The writer has been connected with the United States Forest Service for the past four years in an advisory capacity on staff of the Forest Supervisor of the Clark National Forest, during which time he has found that the engineers and construction men have performed a major function in the development of the forest.

As the initial development consisting of lineal surveys, construction of roads and telephone lines, erection of fire lookout towers, planning and erection of ranger …

A Study Of Opacity Produced By Insoluble Refractory Opacifiers, Theodore J. Planje Jan 1940

A Study Of Opacity Produced By Insoluble Refractory Opacifiers, Theodore J. Planje

Bachelors Theses

"To investigate opacification produced by insoluble, refractory opacifiers in an effort to obtain some knowledge and reliable data concerning the electrical charge on the particles - its quality and quantity, and the effect of heavy metallic ions upon the flocculation and deflocculation of the opacifying particles"--Object, page 1.

Firing Behavior Tests And Other Tests On A Missouri Stoneware Clay To Determine Its Commercial Possibilities, Ivan Martin Niedling Jan 1940

Firing Behavior Tests And Other Tests On A Missouri Stoneware Clay To Determine Its Commercial Possibilities, Ivan Martin Niedling

Bachelors Theses

"A clay's essential character is its plasticity, whether it is to be used for common brick purposes, the manufacture of refractory articles, or merely as a bonding agent for nonplastic materials. Plasticity is a very large subject; there are many theories as to its cause and many methods have been developed to record it, but so far no satisfactory quantitative measure of plasticity has been found. Perhaps the most satisfactory method is to judge by handling the clay, and with constant practice one can become expert in judging the plasticity of a clay by its feel. Such a method is, …

Red Glazes, Sidney Austin Peer Jan 1940

Red Glazes, Sidney Austin Peer

Bachelors Theses

"Red glazes are extremely difficult to produce on pottery except at relatively low temperatures, or under conditions which can only be regarded as largely accidental. For many years ceramists have demanded a red glaze maturing at cone 4. To produce this glaze, much time and research is required...The object of this study was to produce a commercial red glaze at cone 4 from different oxides in a base glaze of white lead and silica"--Scope of Investigation, pages 1, 7.

The Bloating Of Clays, Everett Walter Sharp Jan 1940

The Bloating Of Clays, Everett Walter Sharp

Bachelors Theses

"The effect of firing on clays in relation to volume is either a shrinkage, bloating, or no change whatso-ever. The reason for the shrinkage and the constant volume is well known, but the cause of the bloating has not as yet been determined. In some instances, as the use of fire clay brick in steel ladles, this property of bloating is desirable to a certain extent because this packs the brick lining in the ladle tightly after the first heat is poured in, and prevents the brick lining from floating out when the metal is poured. There is little or …

The Effect Of Clays On The Properties Of Masonry Cement, William Joseph Smothers Jan 1940

The Effect Of Clays On The Properties Of Masonry Cement, William Joseph Smothers

Bachelors Theses

"Portland cement is not a material of great antiquity. It was discovered only a little over a century ago and quite by accident. It has been the custom in the manufacture of hydraulic limes to heat argillaceous limestones to temperatures not greatly above that at which the carbon dioxide would be liberated, but this process was carried out in a stack furnace under conditions such that some parts of the material were heated to temperatures which produced sintering. These hard lumps of sintered material were discarded because they were so much more difficult to grind than the unsintered However, in …

The Production Of High Alumina Refractories Bonded With Lumnite Refractory Cement, Joseph Lewis Hoffman Jan 1940

The Production Of High Alumina Refractories Bonded With Lumnite Refractory Cement, Joseph Lewis Hoffman

Bachelors Theses

"Users of refractories are constantly demanding a better product. There is a demand for a satisfactory neutral or basic refractory with a P.C.E. equivalent of cone 35 or better. A refractory with a very high alumina content would seem to solve this problem, however, the main difficulty has been to bond the unplastic alumina. From the literature it was learned that Lumnite cement has been satisfactory in the manufacture of a refractory concrete. Therefore this investigation was carried out to determine the adaptability of bonding corundum with Lumnite"--Introduction, page 1.

The Effect Of Addition Agents In Grinding Portland Cement Clinker, Eugene Farrell Hill Jan 1940

The Effect Of Addition Agents In Grinding Portland Cement Clinker, Eugene Farrell Hill

Masters Theses

"In the dry grinding of most materials in a ball mill or similar apparatus, a degree of fineness is eventually reached when a noticeable decrease in the efficiency of grinding occurs. The degree of fineness where this phenomenon occurs, as measured by the specific surface of the material being ground, varies greatly with different materials. The accompanying effect in all cases, however, is the formation of a coating upon the balls; this coating in the case of cement adheres tightly to the balls and increases in thickness as grinding progresses after the initial "coating' fineness has been reached. Usually an …

Consumption And Uses Of Crude Barite And Its Derivatives, Peter Simonds Jan 1940

Consumption And Uses Of Crude Barite And Its Derivatives, Peter Simonds

Masters Theses

"Barite is a widely distributed mineral composed of barium sulphate - BaSO₄. Its most striking feature is its weight - its specific gravity of 4.5 being about twice that of salt and many other of the colorless, transparent and vitreous minerals of its general appearance. The Mineral is usually found in a state of considerable chemical purity. However, small amounts of strontium and calcium sulphates may isomorphously replace the barium salt. Crystals of barytes are orthorhombic; usually very perfectly developed and have a wide variety of forms. The simplest crystals are rhomb-shaped tables bounded by two faces of a basal …

Electrolytic Reduction Of Galena In Fused Salt, Peter Simonds Jan 1940

Electrolytic Reduction Of Galena In Fused Salt, Peter Simonds

Masters Theses

"A demand has long existed for a method of directly recovering elemental Sulphur, in addition to the Lead, from Galena ore. At the present time, the sulphur of this ore is dissipated in the lead blast furnace as sulphur dioxide fumes. While the fumes are trapped to avoid damage to the vegetation of the surrounding countryside, their concentration is usually too low to make sulphuric acid as a profitable by-product. Thus, contrary to some speculation, the sulphuric acid produces under the circumstances is usually not a true by-product in the money-making sense of the term in many cases, but a …

Photoelastic Investigation Of Short Beams, Ross R. Carrolla Jan 1940

Photoelastic Investigation Of Short Beams, Ross R. Carrolla

Masters Theses

"In this investigation the author used beams made of Bakelite. They were of rectangular cross-section and centrally loaded. These beams were viewed in polarized light and the maximum fiber stresses observed in that manner were compared with those computed from the flexure formula. The purpose was to determine the minimum length-depth ratio for which the latter gave fairly accurate results"--Preface, page 6.

Constitution And Properties Of Manganese-Copper Alloys, James Harrison Jacobs Jan 1940

Constitution And Properties Of Manganese-Copper Alloys, James Harrison Jacobs

Masters Theses

"This work was undertaken because of the recently revived interest in the use of manganese as an alloying element. This revival of interest has been mainly due to the development of the process for electro-deposition of manganese by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Prior to the work of the bureau of Mines there was no commercial source of high purity manganese. Manganese made by the electrolytic process contains less than .03% impurities, while manganese made by other methods contains as high as 3% impurities. The use of high purity manganese as a base for alloys should open up an …

The Volumetric Determination Of Alumina In Clays And Related Materials, David Ferdinand Boltz Jan 1940

The Volumetric Determination Of Alumina In Clays And Related Materials, David Ferdinand Boltz

Masters Theses

"The primary purpose of this thesis was to develop a direct method for the determination of alumina in certain silicates. The classical gravimetric procedure for the analysis of alumina in clays and related materials has often been regarded as being too lengthy and troublesome, especially when only the percentage of alumina was desired. The correct determination of alumina is undoubtedly one of the most unsatisfactory of the chemical constituents of siliceous materials, and therefore the development of a direct volumetric method for the determination of this constituent was made the main objective of this research, page [1].

Absorption Of Carbon Dioxide In A Bubble Plate Tower, William Arthur Enderson Jan 1940

Absorption Of Carbon Dioxide In A Bubble Plate Tower, William Arthur Enderson

Masters Theses

"Gas absorption, one of the chief operations of chemical engineering, has occupied investigators for a long time. Results of many experiments on the general subject of gas absorption has been published. However, relatively few data have appeared in the literature on the use of bubble cap towers for gas absorption although they constitute one of the three major classifications of absorption equipment. Bubble cap towers are used extensively in the petroleum industry. More performance data would increase the versatility of existing equipment"--Introduction, page 1.

Report On Tests Of Fenestra 1 1/2" Roof Deck Used In Horizontally Loaded Diaphragms, Authur Wilson, George Winter Dec 1939

Report On Tests Of Fenestra 1 1/2" Roof Deck Used In Horizontally Loaded Diaphragms, Authur Wilson, George Winter

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Increasing interest in recent years in the performance of roof systems acting as shear diaphragms to resist horizontally applied loads, as well as the vertical loads for which they are primarily designed, has led to an increasingly large number of tests of fullsize and scaled structures loaded in this manner. Fenestra, Inc., manufacturers of light gage steel floor and roof panels, has sponsored an extensive series of tests at Cornell University of floor and roof diaphragms composed of certain of their standard panel sections. The following report describes tests of shear diaphragms using three types of Fenestra 1 1/2" …
