Calcination Of Missouri Flint, Burley And Diaspore Clays In A Rotary Kiln, Richard Addison Parker Jan 1956

Calcination Of Missouri Flint, Burley And Diaspore Clays In A Rotary Kiln, Richard Addison Parker

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis will concern itself primarily with the preparation, handling and calcination of Missouri fire clays that are subsequently used as "grog" for manufacture of fire brick. This "grog", i.e., calcined flint, burley or diaspore clay is then mixed with ether clays having plastic qualities to form desired shapes of high temperature refractories, and burned as a final product in tunnel kilns and as required, in “beehive” or periodic kilns. The actual manufacture of fire brick will not be dealt with since it is, in itself, a highly specialized industry. We are immediately concerned with the proper preparation of calcined …

"The purpose of this paper shall be primarily to show the present day trends in the use of electricity by the residential consumer and the effect of such trends on the design, planning, and operation of the electric distribution system. System planning related to the electric utility is divided into two classes. The first deals with generation. The second deals with distribution from the various load and transmission centers to the customer. This thesis will deal .primarily with studies related to the latter.

Many utility distribution system problems have been brought about by the rapidly increased demands for residential uses …

A Study Of Gas Porosity In Aluminum Casting Alloys Using Radioactive Hydrogen As A Tracer, Osborne Milton Jan 1956

A Study Of Gas Porosity In Aluminum Casting Alloys Using Radioactive Hydrogen As A Tracer, Osborne Milton

Professional Degree Theses

"A method will be described wherein the absorption of hydrogen by aluminum is evaluated using hydrogen 3 as a tracer element. Results show that hydrogen gas is readily absorbed into the melt when it is injected directly, but is not taken on from the combustion products, that quantities of it are released when the metal freezes, and that the commonly used methods of fluxing with chlorine and nitrogen gas are of value for degassing"--Preface, page iii.

Sanitary Engineering And The Small College, John William Clark Jr. Jan 1956

Sanitary Engineering And The Small College, John William Clark Jr.

Professional Degree Theses

"There is an unprecedented need for sanitary engineers. College students should be informed of the need and of this general field at an early stage in their education so that proper guidance can be given in the selection of electives to those interested.

Colleges must re-appraise their sanitary engineering offering and expand their programs to meet the needs of society.

One of the most difficult jobs facing an expanded sanitary engineering program is securing the students with proper background. Most of the freshmen entering college have some ideas as to what vocation they want to strive toward. This idea of …

Subsurface Geology Of The Mississippi Embayment Of Southeast Missouri, John Gustave Grohskopf Jan 1956

Subsurface Geology Of The Mississippi Embayment Of Southeast Missouri, John Gustave Grohskopf

Professional Degree Theses

"To the southeast of the Ozark Escarpment all municipal, industrial, and agricultural water supplies of record are obtained by drilled wells from alluvial sands and gravels, unconsolidated sands of the Wilcox and McNairy (Ripley) formations, and at a few towns from consolidated Paleozoic dolomites limestones, and sandstones. The irrigation wells obtain their water supply from the Allluvium. These wells have recorded yields of several thousand g.p.m, and the water, though excessively high in iron, is still satisfactory for the irrigation of crops. Some municipal and industrial supplies are obtained from the Wilcox sands, but the water usually requires iron-removal treatment. …

Light Gage Steel Connections With High-Strength, High-Torqued Bolts, George Winter Jan 1956

Light Gage Steel Connections With High-Strength, High-Torqued Bolts, George Winter

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The usual methods for designing bolted connections of conventional steel structures must be modified for application to thin-walled, light-gage steel construction. This is so because the ratios of bolt diameter to steel thickness in light-gage construction are generally much larger than those customary in conventional construction. In a previous paper [1] the writer has published the results of 547 tests of light-gage steel connections with ordinary "black" bolts. The results could be expressed in four simple equations for determining failure loads which, when used with an appropriate factor of safety, can serve as a safe basis for design. It is …

An Investigation Of The Internal Friction Of Manganese-Copper Alloys, Ed. (Edward) Sickafus Jan 1956

An Investigation Of The Internal Friction Of Manganese-Copper Alloys, Ed. (Edward) Sickafus

Masters Theses

"Internal friction is defined as the ability of a vibrating solid to convert its mechanical energy of vibration into heat, even when completely isolated from its surroundings. (1) The most familiar manifestation of internal friction is the damping of a freely vibrating body, such as a torsional pendulum. Another example would be the increased width of the resonance peak observed when a nonelastic body is forced to vibrate over a spectrum of frequencies.(2) Internal friction manifests itself in numerous ways, and we will here be concerned with the first example cited and the potency of data gained in studying the …

The Thermal Conductivity Of Potassium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Wendell D. Miller Jan 1956

The Thermal Conductivity Of Potassium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Wendell D. Miller

Masters Theses

"The transport of heat in solids is attributed to the combined effect of the quantized vibrations of lattice points, or phonons, and the flow of valence electrons. In dielectric solids, the thermal conductivity is due almost entirely to phonons, while in metals the latter method preponderates. Scattering processes in dielectric solids, giving rise to thermal resistance, also serve to limit the thermal conductivity. Scattering results from vacancies, dislocations, interstitial atoms and phonon interaction. Crystal boundaries also function as scattering points and in crystals of small dimensions, this process is the most pronounced conductivity-limiting factor. At low temperatures the thermal resistance …

Heat Transfer Coefficient Of Paint Films, Richard F. Justus Jan 1956

Heat Transfer Coefficient Of Paint Films, Richard F. Justus

Masters Theses

"Many studies of heat transmission have been carried out on various kinds of surfaces. But relatively few investigators have studied the loss of heat from a painted surface. Any surface will lose or gain heat by one or more of the three mechanisms of heat transmission: conduction, convection, and radiation. These mechanisms are thoroughly discussed by McAdams.

Heat transmission can be analyzed by determining thermal conductivity for conduction, overall coefficient for convection, and emissivity for radiation. The resistance concept is useful in indicating the various components of the overall coefficients and in analyzing problems in thermal conduction.

In studying heat …

Determination Of The Effect Of Air-Entraining Agents On Certain Physical Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages, James Arthur Spilman

Masters Theses

"Air entrained concrete over the past eighteen years has received national recognition as a result of its satisfactory performance in highway concrete pavements and other concrete structures subjected to outside exposure.

Numerous highway departments over the entire United States have laid test slabs made of air entrained concrete. Among those to date are Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Illinois, Missouri and California. The primary purpose in building these test slabs was to investigate their durability or resistance to freezing and thawing and the action of various salts on air entrained concrete. The results of the test …

Investigation Of The Current Distribution On An Antenna In A Waveguide, David J. Freeman Jan 1956

Investigation Of The Current Distribution On An Antenna In A Waveguide, David J. Freeman

Masters Theses

"In a communication system composed of several networks and transmission systems, it is necessary for all parts of the system to be impedance matched so that medium energy transfer is possible.

One of the recent transmission systems which has been developed is the wave guide. With the advent of the wave guide the communication engineer is immediately faced with the problem of coupling existing systems and networks to his newly found mode of transmission.

Practically this coupling problem reduces to one of feeding radio frequency energy to the wave guide with some conventional transmission line such as a coaxial line. …

Correlation Of Weir Crest Depth, Froude Number, H/P Ratio, Weir Thickness, Paul Harrawood Jan 1956

Correlation Of Weir Crest Depth, Froude Number, H/P Ratio, Weir Thickness, Paul Harrawood

Masters Theses

"1. The Froude number criterion for weir flow was shown to be sound and accurate by experimental verification of the theoretical correlation of Froude number and critical depth. It was proved that sub-critical, critical and super-critical flows are correctly identified by the Froude number.

2. In order to accurately determine the Froude number, the actual flow section at the weir crest must be known. Because of end contractions, it does not have the same dimensions as the weir opening. For the Cipoletti weir, it is the product of the length of the crest and the crest depth, i.e., A= by. …

Promotion Of Dropwise Condensation By Silicones, Charles Orlando Reed Jr. Jan 1956

Promotion Of Dropwise Condensation By Silicones, Charles Orlando Reed Jr.

Masters Theses

"Within this rather extensive field of study, transfer of heat through fluid films and heat transfer during the condensation process have been the subject of considerable thought and investigation both from a theoretical standpoint and with the aim of collecting data on specific systems to aid the design and construction of equipment in which heat transfer is involved….

The phenomenum of dropwise condensation has not become a common one in industrial practive for a number of reasons, namely, the difficulty in maintaining the activity of the promoter without frequent makeup because of impermanent attachment and volatility, the difficulty in finding …

Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride Within The Temperature Range 375°K To 637°K, Paul E. Ohlsen Jan 1956

Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride Within The Temperature Range 375°K To 637°K, Paul E. Ohlsen

Masters Theses

"The transport of heat in dielectric solids is attributed entirely to lattice waves whereas in metals there is in addition a transfer by the flow of valence electrons. The thermal conductivity of a non-electrical-conductor is limited by a number of scattering processes giving rise to thermal resistances. Scattering results from impurity atoms and from vacancies and dislocations within the crystal structure and from the interaction of the lattice vibrations amongst themselves. Scattering also occurs at the boundaries of the crystal. The thermal resistance of an ideal crystal at low temperatures is due almost entirely to boundary scattering and at high …

The Effect Of Ph On Phase Reversals Of Protein-Stabilized Emulsions, Samuel Arthur Bradford Jan 1956

The Effect Of Ph On Phase Reversals Of Protein-Stabilized Emulsions, Samuel Arthur Bradford

Masters Theses

"The phase reversal of an emulsion from a system in which oil droplets are dispersed in a water medium to a system in which water droplets are dispersed in oil is dependent upon the interfacial characteristics of the liquids and the emulsifying agent being used, as well as the volume ratio of the two liquid phases. A preliminary investigation at this institution has indicated a possible relationship between phase reversal and the isoelectric point of gelatin used as the emulsifying agent. Since the properties of proteins vary so greatly with the hydrogen ion concentration, particularly near their isoelectric points, research …

Geothermometry At The Balmat No. 2 Mine, New York By The Fes-Zns System, Bruce R. Doe Jan 1956

Geothermometry At The Balmat No. 2 Mine, New York By The Fes-Zns System, Bruce R. Doe

Masters Theses

"Definition Of The Study. The study consists of an investigation of the variation in the temperature of formation of sphalerite on the 500 and 1500 ft levels of the Balmat zinc deposit at Balmat, New York. A subsidiary investigation was performed on the use of x-ray fluorescence as a means of chemical quantitative analysis. Twelve samples of sphalerite from the 500 ft level and 13 samples from the 1500 ft level were analyzed for atomic percent iron content by measuring Zn/Fe x-ray fluorescent ratios. The x-ray fluorescent ratios were standardized by ''wet" quantitative analysis. The results of the analyses are …

The Effect Of Metallic Naphthenates On The Oxidation Of Linoleic Acid, David Elliott Troutner Jan 1956

The Effect Of Metallic Naphthenates On The Oxidation Of Linoleic Acid, David Elliott Troutner

Masters Theses

"It has been known for many years that certain metallic soaps catalyse the drying of oils. A great deal of information is available concerning the use of these soaps, but there is little knowledge of the actual manner in which the soaps catalyse drying. As the drying is known to be an autoxidation reaction, it is generally believed that the soaps must affect the oxidation of the oil in some way. The work described in this thesis was undertaken to gain some knowledge of the mechanism of the catalysis, and to correlate the effect of the soaps on the drying …

A Study Of The Deleading Of Zinc Sulfide Concentrates, Larry Leroy Gidley Jan 1956

A Study Of The Deleading Of Zinc Sulfide Concentrates, Larry Leroy Gidley

Masters Theses

"The object of this research was to study the basic principles and optimum conditions for the deleading of commercial zinc sulfide concentrates by sublimation of the lead in the form of a sulfide. Present commercial practice conducts this sublimation in hearth roasters. This research considered only the variables affecting sublimation of the lead sulfide, not the types of applicable equipment, or other possible processes. However, the laboratory conditions were at least partially similar to those that could be obtained in commercial practice"--Object, page 1.

Development Of Large Hole Burn Cut Drift Rounds, Joseph J. Yancik Jr. Jan 1956

Development Of Large Hole Burn Cut Drift Rounds, Joseph J. Yancik Jr.

Masters Theses

"A decided change in the attitudes of mining management toward the need for mine research has taken place during the past decade. More emphasis is being placed not only on the improvement of existing mining methods, but also on the adaptation of new ideas. As the depletion of the high grade ore deposits in this country becomes a reality, the need for reducing the costs of mining is pressing. The successful exploitation of low grade ore bodies will depend upon the continued advancement in the science of mining.

The methods used today in driving a small drift or tunnel in …

Pre-Cambrian Geology Of Washington County Area, Missouri, Gordon Blair French Jan 1956

Pre-Cambrian Geology Of Washington County Area, Missouri, Gordon Blair French

Masters Theses

"The Problem.

Washington County, Missouri contains a limited number of outcrops of pre-Cambrian igneous rocks, the majority of which are in the extreme southern part of the county. The known association of lead ore with buried or partially buried pre-Cambrian igneous knobs and ridges in this part of Missouri has led the St. Joseph Lead Company to prospect in areas known to contain these features. In its exploration program, the St. Joseph Lead Company has drilled a number of prospect holes which have encountered other occurrences of pre-Cambrian igneous rocks within the limits of Washington County. This drilling, correlated with …
