Measurements Of Density Fluctuations In Submerged Water Jets, L. N. Wilson, D. W. Prosser Jan 1969

Measurements Of Density Fluctuations In Submerged Water Jets, L. N. Wilson, D. W. Prosser

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

A remote sensing technique, free from many of the problems associated with Inserting probes into a liquid flow, has been developed to measure turbulent density fluctuations In a low speed, submerged water jet. The technique employs two schlieren optical systems, composed of He-Ne lasers and photo detectors. The optical beams intersect in the flow in a plane perpendicular to the flow direction. Knife edges are aligned such that the systems are sensitive to gradients of refractive index in the flow direction. An analysis is presented which relates the cross-covariance of the two signals to the local two-point refractive-index covariance and …

Effect Of Dilute Polymer Solutions On External Boundary Layers, Brian Latto, J. A. Middleton Jan 1969

Effect Of Dilute Polymer Solutions On External Boundary Layers, Brian Latto, J. A. Middleton

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The paper reports an experimental study of the flow of homogeneous aqueous polyacrylamide MRL 402 solution over a thin flat plate. Extensive velocity profile data were obtained, using both cylindrical and conical hot-file probes, and used to obtain local skin friction profiles. Direct drag measurements were made over a period of time for concentrations of 0, 25, 50 and 75 wppm and indicated that there was no appreciable degradation of the polymer. Extensive turbulence intensity data were obtained which were contradictory but indicated that the conical type probe is better than the cylindrical type for turbulence measurements and that the …

Criteria For Planning A Mobile Home Park Development In Rural Areas, Richard Euguene Sharp Jan 1969

Criteria For Planning A Mobile Home Park Development In Rural Areas, Richard Euguene Sharp

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to determine the possibility of developing a mobile home park as a partial solution to the problem of inadequate housing in rural communities. The investigation involved the study of modern mobile homes and mobile home parks, mobile home dwellers, and the social and economic aspects of mobile home living. It was suggested that a properly designed and managed mobile home park can provide a satisfactory location for the placement of mobile homes. The small down payment and low monthly payments associated with purchasing a mobile home, along with the inherent mobility of mobile home …

Stratigraphy And Economic Geology Of Uranium-Bearing Sediments In The Poison Spider District, Natrona County, Wyoming, Carlos Enrique Reijenstein D'Acierno Jan 1969

Stratigraphy And Economic Geology Of Uranium-Bearing Sediments In The Poison Spider District, Natrona County, Wyoming, Carlos Enrique Reijenstein D'Acierno

Masters Theses

"Geologic, stratigraphic, and mineralogic characteristics of the Eocene Wind River and Oligocene White River Formations were determined for the southern portion of the Poison Spider District, Natrona County, Wyoming. Sieve analysis and heavy mineral techniques were used to recognize stratigraphic units, determine their environment of deposition, obtain a better knowledge of the grain size distribution, and to identify a possible source area for the sediments. Particular emphasis was concentrated on the evaluation and interpretation of the available geophysical data (gamma ray and resistivity logs), and geological information which had led to the establishment of several relationships between the local geology …

The Analysis Of R-S-S-R Spatial Four-Bar Mechanism, David Perng Chyi Jan 1969

The Analysis Of R-S-S-R Spatial Four-Bar Mechanism, David Perng Chyi

Masters Theses

"Although many methods are known for the kinematic analysis of spatial mechanisms, such as descriptive geometry, vector analysis, dual number theory, matrices, screw calculus, and various other methods, a better way to analyze the specific R-S-S-R four-bar mechanism is to use tensor methods in order to eliminate the apparently formidable and tedious tasks of mathematically formulating problems and obtaining solutions. The analysis described in this paper is developed basically by using tensor notations and operations, and the calculations take advantage of the capabilities of modern digital computers. A FORTRAN program for the IBM 360 Data Processing System which will analyze …

An Aggregate Quality Investigation Of The Meramec River Gravels, Kadri Ercin Kasapoglu Jan 1969

An Aggregate Quality Investigation Of The Meramec River Gravels, Kadri Ercin Kasapoglu

Masters Theses

"This thesis represents a study which was made to evaluate and interpret the downstream variations in the quality of the Meramec River gravels as coarse aggregate for concrete. Since gravel deposits constitute a valuable resource for a region, it is desirable that extent and quality variations of these deposits are known. It was hoped that an evaluation of certain properties of the Meramec River gravels would assist in determining the value of the Meramec River as undeveloped aggregate source by indicating the relative quality of the gravels from alternate sites of the river. For the purpose of this investigation, representative …

A Method For Determining Transient Stability In Power Systems, Charles A. Gross Jan 1969

A Method For Determining Transient Stability In Power Systems, Charles A. Gross

Doctoral Dissertations

"Given a three phase ac power system consisting of synchronous alternators interconnected by transmission lines and other items of electrical transmission equipment, a method is presented which determines the stability of the system when subjected to a three phase symmetrical fault, and to the subsequent clearing of the fault. It is inherent in the method that an estimation of system stability, assuming an instantaneous clearing of the fault, is available. The critical clearing time is therefore determined. The effect of a speed control loop on the system's largest machine is investigated. The method is applied to two, three, four, and …

A Theoretical Study On The Interpretation Of Resistivity Sounding Data Measured By The Wenner Electrode System, Siew Hung Chan Jan 1969

A Theoretical Study On The Interpretation Of Resistivity Sounding Data Measured By The Wenner Electrode System, Siew Hung Chan

Doctoral Dissertations

"This thesis deals with a theoretical study on the interpretation of resistivity sounding data measured by the Wenner electrode system. The objectives of this investigation are twofold: (i) to derive from the apparent resistivity data some suitable functions from which the resistivity and thickness of each member of the sequence of layers composing the earth may be determined, and (ii) to devise suitable methods for analyzing the resulting functions. In this investigation it is shown that the solution of the boundary value problem associated with an n-layered earth model leads to an integral equation for the Wenner electrode system. This …

Diffusion Of Iron And Cobalt In Nickel Single Crystals, Charles Frederick Heuer Jan 1969

Diffusion Of Iron And Cobalt In Nickel Single Crystals, Charles Frederick Heuer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Diffusion coefficients of iron-59 in nickel have been determined in the temperature range 815°C to 1200°C. The temperature dependence can be represented by an Arrhenius type relationship,...The effect of the isotopic mass on the diffusion coefficient of cobalt in nickel has also been investigated. The isotope effect parameter, E, was found to vary from .26 to .84 over the temperature range 970.5°C to 1200°C. Both results are consistent with the single vacancy mechanism of diffusion. No evidence of divacancy contributions to the mass transport has been found"--Abstract, Page i.

Mass And Heat Transfer Relations In Evaporation Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley, V. V. Tanna, Y. B. Rao, C. L. Yeh Jan 1969

Mass And Heat Transfer Relations In Evaporation Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley, V. V. Tanna, Y. B. Rao, C. L. Yeh

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study concerns rates of evaporation and mass transfer of water vapor from a heated salt solution through a water repellent porous membrane to a cooled water condensate. This transfer is a result of temperature differences and corresponding vapor pressure differences across the membrane. Three groups of experiments were carried out which indicate that the major factor influencing the rates of transfer is diffusion through a stagnant gas in the membrane pores. However, an equation considering film heat transfer coefficients, membrane thermal conductivity, and an empirical correction based on temperature driving force appears to be necessary for representing all the …

Das Problem Der Mononitrierung Von Durol, S. B. Hanna, E. Hunziker, T. Saito, H. Zollinger

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In contrast to many previous investigations, reaction conditions were found under which the nitration of durene (nitrating ratio of 1:1) gives predominantly, and in high yield, mononitrodurene rather than the usually formed dinitrodurene (plus unreacted durene). The method consists in nitrating by nitronium phosphorohexafluoride in nitromethane as solvent in presence of two equivalents of water. With mixed acid (HNO3 + H2SO4) in nitromethane and in acetonitrile durene forms also monoand no dinitrodurene; but under most conditions by‐products are formed. Some of the by‐products were identified. Some preliminary mechanistic results are reported: An addition complex of …

A Determination Of The Speed Of Light By The Phase-Shift Method, John Rogers, Ronnie Mcmillan, Robert Pickett, Richard A. Anderson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A low-frequency, phase-shift method for the measurement of the speed of light has been developed. This technique gives results commensurate with other advanced laboratory methods. One advantage of this technique is that the apparatus is of reasonable size and most of the circuitry involves widely known amateur radio techniques. Furthermore, our use of a low modulating frequency permits use of the solid-state, electro-optical light shutter. This eliminates the rather dangerous liquid Kerr cell, thus making our apparatus more acceptable to application in the undergraduate advanced laboratory. From a pedagogical point of view, the student is allowed to use and become …

Semiempirical Determination Of The Hydrogen Bond Energy For Water Clusters In The Vapor Phase. I. General Theory And Application To The Dimer, Richard W. Bolandee, James L. Kassner, Joseph T. Zung Jan 1969

Semiempirical Determination Of The Hydrogen Bond Energy For Water Clusters In The Vapor Phase. I. General Theory And Application To The Dimer, Richard W. Bolandee, James L. Kassner, Joseph T. Zung

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A simple semiempirical method is given for determining the hydrogen bond energy for water clusters in the vapor phase. This method is based on a general statistical-mechanical theory of clustering. The partition function for a system of clusters is used to determine the equilibrium distribution of clusters. In conjunction with available thermodynamic and spectroscopic data, the cluster equilibrium constants can be used to calculate the cluster potential energy and the hydrogen bond energy. Results for the water dimer agree quite well with other reported values obtained either by quantum-mechanical calculations or approximate thermodynamic estimates. A correct temperature dependence of the …

Structure Of Shock Waves With Nonequilibrium Radiation And Ionization, Harlan F. Nelson, R. Goulard

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The investigations of this study are concerned with: (1) the physical processes that occur in the precursor and in the nonequilibrium region behind a strong shock wave during its approach to equilibrium in an argon like gas; (2) the influence of different atom-atom collisional rates in the relaxation region on the precursor; and (3) the cause of precursor ionization, which in this study has been assumed to be the photoionization of both the ground and excited states. The argon like gas is regarded as a combination of two gases: one consisting of electrons and the other of atoms and ions. …

Mutually Dependent Heat And Mass Transfer In Laminar Duct Flow, E. M. Sparrow, T. S. Chen Jan 1969

Mutually Dependent Heat And Mass Transfer In Laminar Duct Flow, E. M. Sparrow, T. S. Chen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analysis is performed of the strongly coupled heat and mass transfer processes which result from sublimation of mass from the walls of a duct into a flowing gas, the latent heat being provided solely by convective transfer from the gas. The flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically developed. Results are given for the stream ward variations of the bulk and wall temperatures and mass fractions, of the heat and mass transfer rates, and of the local heat transfer coefficient. Representative temperature and mass fraction profiles are also presented. Entrance lengths characterizing the near approach to fully developed …

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen Jan 1969

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental methods are needed for determining the characteristics of small acoustic filters used in systems with pulsating gas flows. These characteristics could then be used to predict the performance of proposed filter designs in a particular system, according to plane wave acoustic theory. Dependence on trial-and-error experimentation in solving noise control problems would thus be minimized. A literature survey revealed only a few earlier attempts to evaluate the acoustic performance of small filters and filter elements. Three methods for determining reflection and transmission factors are described, evaluated, and compared. A method employing a standing wave tube of unique design is …

Isotope Effect Of Carbon Diffusion In An Fe-Si Alloy, Manfred Wuttig, E. T. Yen Jan 1969

Isotope Effect Of Carbon Diffusion In An Fe-Si Alloy, Manfred Wuttig, E. T. Yen

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The isotope effect of carbon diffusion in dilute iron silicon alloys containing 28Si and 30Si has been measured below room temperature using the Dis accommodation technique. The time dependence of the reluctivity has been analyzed in terms of two relaxation processes which are due to the reorientation of carbon interstitials in Fe-Fe and Fe-Si sites respectively. The ratio of the relaxation times of the two carbon isotopes 13C and 12C τ13/τ12 is 1.037 for the former and 1.007 for the latter process in the Fe+28Si alloy. The ratios of the relaxation times of the same carbon isotope 12C contained in …

Film Boiling Heat Transfer From An Oscillating Sphere, L. G. Rhea, R. G. Nevins Jan 1969

Film Boiling Heat Transfer From An Oscillating Sphere, L. G. Rhea, R. G. Nevins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An experimental investigation has been undertaken to determine the effect of oscillation of the heat transfer surface on turbulent film boiling heat transfer. A transient technique was used to calculate the heat flux from copper spheres of 1 in., 3/4 in., and 1/2 in. dia. In all tests, saturated liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure was used as the boiling fluid. The data obtained were found to be in good agreement with published theory at zero frequency. The range of frequencies studied was from zero to approximately 12 cps at peak-to-peak amplitudes of 2 in. and 1 in., i.e., at amplitude-to-diameter …

Mixed Magnetic Systems: A Model With Application To (1-X)Cdcr2s4 · Xcdcr2se4, Harry A. Brown Jan 1969

Mixed Magnetic Systems: A Model With Application To (1-X)Cdcr2s4 · Xcdcr2se4, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Curie temperatures and asymptotic Curie temperatures are calculated for mixed magnetic systems by a semi-classical Bethe-Peierls-Weiss cluster approach. The systems are typified by (1-x) CdCr2Se4 · xCdCr2Se4 in which the substitution changes the anions but not the magnetic cations. It is found that next-nearest-neighbor interactions are needed to match the data but that, with them, excellent agreement can be obtained for a reasonably unique choice of the exchange integrals. © 1969.

State Assignments For Non-Normal Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary Keith Maki Jan 1969

State Assignments For Non-Normal Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary Keith Maki

Masters Theses

"There is a lack of procedures that can be used to find good internal state assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits operating in the non-normal mode. Presented here, are two generalized state assignments, which are functions only of the number of rows in a flow table. The suggested bounds for the generalized state assignments are m + [log₂m] and m + [m/2] internal state variables for a 2m-row flow table, where [ ] means "next lowest integer". Both generalized state assignments produce group (linear) codes. The algorithms for generating these internal state assignments are easy and straight-forward to implement. …
