Development Of An Elastic-Plastic Finite Element Program With The Initial Strain Approach, Vernon Dale Allen Jan 1971

Development Of An Elastic-Plastic Finite Element Program With The Initial Strain Approach, Vernon Dale Allen

Masters Theses

"A finite element method is presented for solution of plane stress and axisymmetric elastic-plastic problems employing the method of successive elastic solutions with the initial strain approach. The problem of nonconvergence of the initial strain approach for perfectly plastic problems was eliminated by expressing the Prandtl-Ruess equations entirely in terms of strain. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the method"--Abstract, page ii.

Analysis Of Factors Affecting Station Capacitor Bank Switching Transients, M. Davarpanah Jan 1971

Analysis Of Factors Affecting Station Capacitor Bank Switching Transients, M. Davarpanah

Masters Theses

"The problem presented here is a study using a computer program which predicts the transient response when energizing a station capacitor bank of a power system. The computer program gives the wave shape and magnitudes of switching surges obtained while energized capacitor banks at one location and showing the effect of switching a bank while adjacent banks are already energized. The over voltages are given in line-to-ground voltages on the line side of the capacitor banks as well as at lower voltage levels down to the customer 120 volts service voltages. The purposes are to obtain the optimum values of …

It also provides signal drive to an attached printer in order to reproduce this information for use on the drug label. Finally, the system electronics accepts input …

Permeability Scaling In A Numerical Coning Model, V. K. Dutta, Marion D. Arnold Jan 1971

Permeability Scaling In A Numerical Coning Model, V. K. Dutta, Marion D. Arnold

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method is described for simulating coning into a wellbore using a numerical simulation model. The method allows the wellbore cells to be considerably larger than the actual wellbore. This makes coning studies feasible using an implicit pressure-explicit saturation type model with a reasonable time step. This capability is achieved by scaling the horizontal-vertical permeability ratios to give the proper vertical potential drop.

The Oxidative Decarboxylation Of Polyaminocarboxylic Acids - Ii. A Comparative Kinetic Study Of The Oxidation Of Nta, Edta, Cdta And Dtpa With Cerium(Iv) In Sulfuric Acid Media, Samir B. Hanna, Rita Hessley, William H. Webb, William R. Carroll

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The rates of oxidation of four chelating agents, NTA, EDTA, CDTA, and DTPA with Ce(IV), in sulfuric acid media, were determined spectrophotometrically by a stopped-flow technique. The reductive ability is in the order CDTA > EDTA > DTPA > NTA. The influence of varying the acidity of the medium was studied, and in each case a maximum in the rate constant vs. [H+] plot was observed. A possible interpretation of the reactivities and the influence of acidity is advanced. © 1971 Springer-Verlag.

Magnetic Behavior Of Rare-Earth Iron-Rich Intermetallic Compounds, Dominique Givord, Remy Lemaire, William Joseph James, Jean Michel Moreau, Jayant S. Shah

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The thermal variation of lattice parameters of rare earth-transition metal intermetallic compounds rich in Fe, Co, or Ni in the temperature range of 25-900oK is studied. For the Fe compounds, negative thermal expansion is observed below their magnetic ordering temperatures regardless of the nature of substitutional ordering. For Co and Ni compounds, the thermal expansion behavior is normal. It is then concluded that for the Fe compounds, the magnetic properties are mainly determined by the Fe-Fe interatomic distances and the number of Fe nearest neighbors, whereas for Co and Ni compounds the magnetic properties are determined by the conduction electron …

Activation Volumes Of Interstitial Diffusion In Ferromagnetic Metals And Alloys, Manfred Wuttig, J. Keiser

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Dis accommodation technique was used to determine the activation volumes of carbon diffusion ΔV of a Fe-1.4 wt% Si alloy, of hcp cobalt, and of nickel at the temperatures of -21, 75, and 110°C, respectively. The obtained values of ΔV are +0.3 ± 0.3 and -0.6 ± 0.9 cm3 mole-1 for the two relaxations observed in hcp cobalt, and 1.2 ± 0.1 cm3 mole-1 for nickel. These results are discussed in terms of a continuum model that interprets the activation energy of diffusion as a sum of the strain and exchange energies. It is found that in ferromagnetic solids …

Structure And Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E. N. Boulos, N. J. Kreidl

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Clear glasses form in the system Ag2O‐B2O3 up to about 35 mol% (65 wt%) Ag2O. Infrared absorption, thermal expansion, and density data indicated an analogy to the Na2O‐B2O3 system. Pentaborate‐triborate group pairs appear to be formed on addition of Ag2O to B2O3 up to 20 mol% Ag2O and diborate groups from 20 to 33 mol% Ag2O. This interpretation is supported by the comparison of the infrared absorption spectra of quenched and crystallized glasses. One crystallization product, Ag2O‐4B2O3, was …

An Approximate Model For The Static Operation Of A Fluidic Amplifier Employing Axisymmetric Jets, Richard T. Johnson Jan 1971

An Approximate Model For The Static Operation Of A Fluidic Amplifier Employing Axisymmetric Jets, Richard T. Johnson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approximate mathematical model for the static, no-load (blocked receiver) operation of a fluidic amplifier employing axisymmetric jets is developed. The amplifier is similar in concept to the three-terminal modulator developed by the Johnson Service Co. The approach used in developing the model assumes that the complex flow phenomena can be represented by the combination of several elementary flow problems. The model employs the concept of an equivalent power nozzle in describing downstream flow with a control signal present. Experimental results are presented to justify assumptions and evaluate parameters. © 1971 by ASME.

Trace Base Metals, Petrography, Rock Alteration Of The Productive Tres Hermanas Stock, Luna County, New Mexico, Peethambaram Doraibabu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Zinc, lead and minor copper-bearing manto-type and vein- type deposits occur in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks adjoining the Tres Hermanas quartz monzonite stock, Luna County, New Mexico. In an attempt to prove or disprove a possible genetic relationship between these mineral deposits and the stock, 99 half-mile or closer orthogonal grid samples from the stock and 22 soil samples from a connecting alluvial area to the north were analysed by atomic absorption technique for trace contents of zinc, lead and copper. Thirty-two of the rock samples were selected on a wider grid and petrographically studied and modal analyses calculated. Argillic, sericitic …

X-Ray And Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies Of The Silicon-Antimony And Bismuth-Antimony Alloys, James Ralph Teague Jan 1971

X-Ray And Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies Of The Silicon-Antimony And Bismuth-Antimony Alloys, James Ralph Teague

Doctoral Dissertations

"X-ray and Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to investigate two antimony alloys, Bi-Sb and Si-Sb, showing semiconductorsemimetallic transitions or vice versa, depending on the antimony concentration in the host lattice. Resistivity and density measurements were found to be helpful in the analysis of the results. X-ray studies for dislocation-free antimony-doped silicon showed that the lattice constant of the alloy increased as the antimony concentration increased from 10¹⁸ to 10¹⁹ Sb atoms/cc. Rather good agreement was found between theoretical and experimental changes in lattice constant for dislocation-free silicon. Mössbauer studies showed that the isomer shift decreased linearly with increasing antimony concentration, which …

Identification Of Centers Of Influence For Urban Areas, Robert W. Meyer Jan 1971

Identification Of Centers Of Influence For Urban Areas, Robert W. Meyer

Doctoral Dissertations

"A method is developed for the identification of the spatial locations about which urban population densities tend to be distributed. The identification of these "influence centers" is based upon the use of available census data. The method is developed for application to any population characteristic which can be logically represented in terms of spatial density. Examples of such characteristics are; total population, population by race, and population by income group. The method is empirically developed and verified for restricted spatial distributions using artifically generated census tract information. These spatial distributions are compatiable with population distributions that are most readily modeled …

Some Metal Complexes Of Dihydroxycyclobutenedione, Stewart Michael Condren Jan 1971

Some Metal Complexes Of Dihydroxycyclobutenedione, Stewart Michael Condren

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study involves an investigation of some of the physical and chemical properties of the trivalent metal squarate complexes of iron, vanadium, and indium in order to determine their structure. In this investigation studies were made of the infrared spectra, electronic spectra, x-ray diffraction powder photographs and diffractometer patterns, magnetic susceptibilities, and thermogravimetric patterns for the trihydrate, dihydrate, and anhydrous squarate complexes of vanadium(III) and iron (III) and the dihydrate squarate complex of indium(III). These studies suggest that the structures of the vanadium(III) and iron(III) squarate complexes are dimeric with hydroxyl bridges between the metal atoms. This is supported by …

An Investigation Of Subsequent Yield Phenomena, Joseph George Hoeg Jan 1971

An Investigation Of Subsequent Yield Phenomena, Joseph George Hoeg

Doctoral Dissertations

"A method utilizing high pressure fluid environments is described whereby a three-dimensional subsequent yield surface was determined for 304 stainless steel. Cylindrical parent specimens of this material were prestrained in axial compression under fluid pressure and then small sub-specimens were sectioned from these parent specimens. Finite element techniques were used to optimize the parent specimen size so that a zone of uniform axial stress would result during the prestraining. Longitudinal strains in this zone were monitored during the prestraining and the sub-specimens were cut from this region in a manner that did not allow the machining to appreciably affect the …

Theory Of Nucleation Of Water Properties Of Some Clathrate Like Cluster Structures, Mehdi Daee Jan 1971

Theory Of Nucleation Of Water Properties Of Some Clathrate Like Cluster Structures, Mehdi Daee

Doctoral Dissertations

"The tranquility of classical homogeneous nucleation theory has been disturbed by the introduction of statistical mechanical correction factors to a basically thermodynamic theory. These factors, which appear to be essential, destroy much of the agreement with experiment in the case of water vapor. A molecular model for the pre-nucleation water clusters is proposed with a view toward resolving some of these difficulties. As a first step, the Properties of a few specific cluster configurations have been examined. Clathrate-like structures containing 16 to 57 water molecules are discussed. The hydrogen bonds were treated as simple harmonic oscillators for the purpose of …

An Age Hardening Study Of Magnesium-Thorium-Manganese Alloys, Kuldip Singh Chopra Jan 1971

An Age Hardening Study Of Magnesium-Thorium-Manganese Alloys, Kuldip Singh Chopra

Doctoral Dissertations

"The age hardening processes in Mg-3.5 wt.% Th-1.0 wt.% Mn and Mg-1.0 wt.% Th-1.0 wt.% Mn alloys have been studied by light and electron microscopy, and by electron and X-ray diffraction. At aging temperatures of 300ºC and below, G.P. zone formation rapidly hardens these alloys followed by the precipitation of disc shaped plates during averaging. During aging above 300ºC, no G.P. zones form and the disc shaped precipitate grows to very large sizes. The combined results of X-ray and electron diffraction indicate that the disc shaped precipitate has a Mg₃Cd (DO₁₉) type structure. The basal plane of the Mg₃Th discs …

Use Of The Turbulence Kinetic Energy Equation In Analyzing Turbulent Near Wakes, James Edward Auiler Jan 1971

Use Of The Turbulence Kinetic Energy Equation In Analyzing Turbulent Near Wakes, James Edward Auiler

Doctoral Dissertations

"A general method is presented for analyzing turbulent flow fields in the near wake regions of two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies. The governing partial differential equations of continuity, momentum and turbulence kinetic energy are expressed in elliptic form in terms of the dependent variables stream function, vorticity and turbulence kinetic energy. An iterative finite-difference technique is used to solve the governing equations simultaneously. Numerical solutions are obtained for the following physical problems: 1. Laminar near wake: Only stream function and vorticity are considered for laminar flow. Solutions are compared with available analytical results for uniform flow over a sphere. 2. Turbulent …

Photoionization Of Photoexcited Cesium, Robert E. Hebner Jan 1971

Photoionization Of Photoexcited Cesium, Robert E. Hebner

Doctoral Dissertations

"A new method for obtaining the cross section for photoionization of photoexcited cesium is presented. The salient feature of this experiment is to use three crossed beams, i.e., two light beams intersecting a beam of cesium atoms. The cross section is determined by counting the ions produced by the two step process: Cs (6S) + h[upsilon]₁ --> Cs (6P) ; Cs (6P) + [upsilon]₂ --> Cs⁺ + e⁻ The relative cross section for the second step has been obtained from threshold (5060 Å) to 2500 Å. The excitation light source used in obtaining this cross section was a rf resonance …

Statistical Study Of Rock Drilling By Hypervelocity Jets From Explosive Shaped Charges, John William Brown Jan 1971

Statistical Study Of Rock Drilling By Hypervelocity Jets From Explosive Shaped Charges, John William Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

"The drilling effect in rock of hypervelocity jets from explosive shaped charges was investigated experimentally to supplement a rapid excavation concept. The effects of the design factors of the charge and the mechanical properties of eight rock types were studied. Experiments were both designed and analyzed upon statistical principles. A full factorial experimental design was used for each of seven rock types. An analysis of variance and the k-ratio least significant-difference test were applied to the results.

The optimum design of shaped charges for drilling was found to be independent of rock type and rock properties. For composition C-4 charges …

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids, Billy W. Peace Jan 1971

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids, Billy W. Peace

Doctoral Dissertations

"The interaction of diazomalonic esters with olefins in the presence of homogeneous copper(I) and copper(II) catalyst has been examined as a function of olefin structure, solvent media, ionic strength, catalyst structure and catalyst concentration, using partial rate data. It has been possible to determine the fine mechanistic details of the cycloproponation, C-H insertion and "dimer" forming reactions. The initial step is displacement of a ligand from copper by diazo compound in a pre-equilibrium, loss of nitrogen in the rate determining step, return of the ligand, displacement of metal from the carbenoid by olefin, followed by collapse to products. Studies revealed …
