Probability Of Detection In Structural Health Monitoring, Genda Chen
Probability Of Detection In Structural Health Monitoring, Genda Chen
INSPIRE Archived Webinars
The fundamental concept of the probability of detection in structural health monitoring is introduced. The traditional Probability of Detection (POD) method as described in the Department of Defense Handbook MIL-HDBK-1823A for nondestructive evaluation systems does not take the time dependency of data collection into account. When applied to in-situ sensors for the measurement of flaw sizes, such as fatigue-induced crack length and corrosion-induced mass loss, the validity and reliability of the traditional method is unknown. In this 50-minute lecture, the POD for in-situ sensors and their associated reliability assessment for detectable flaw sizes are evaluated using a Flaw-Size-at-Detection (FSaD) method …

In this work, we designed, fabricated, and characterized the first nitrogen (N)-doped single-crystalline 4H silicon carbide (4H-SiC) electrode for sensing the neurotransmitter dopamine. This N-doped 4H-SiC electrode showed good selectivity for redox reactions of dopamine in comparison with uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AA), and common cationic ([Ru(NH3)6]3+), anionic ([Fe(CN)6]3-), and organic (methylene blue) redox molecules. The mechanisms of this unique selectivity are rationalized by the unique negative Si valency and adsorption properties of the analytes on the N-doped 4H-SiC surface. Quantitative electrochemical detection of dopamine by the 4H-SiC electrode …

Raveling, or the Loss of Surface Aggregate, is a Major Concern in Chip Seal Pavement. Previous Studies Have Used the Standard Sweep, Vialit, and Pennsylvania Tests to Evaluate Raveling, But These Tests Do Not Replicate the Stresses of Rolling Vehicle Tires on Chip Seal and Have Produced Inconsistent Results. Additionally, These Tests Mainly Evaluate Early-Stage Raveling Due to their Short Curing Time. in This Study, a Small-Wheel Traffic Simulation Device (SWTS) Was Used to Apply Similar Stresses as Rolling Vehicle Tires and Produce Comparable Raveling Results. This Was Confirmed through a 13-Month Field Observation of Chip Seal, Where the Laboratory …

The Discovery of Superconducting Nickelates Reignited Hope for Elucidating the High-Tc Superconductivity Mechanism in Isostructural Cuprates. While the Superconducting Gap Opens Up on a Single Band of the Quasi-2D Fermi Surface in the Cuprates, the Nickelates Are Known to Have a 3D Nature of an Electronic Structure with a Multi-Band. This Raises a Serious Question About the Role of the 2D Nature for the High-Tc Superconductivity. Here, Employing GW + Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT), We Report the Kondo Effect Driven by the Strong Correlation of Nd-4f and Ni-3d Electrons Emerging at Low Temperature. the Kondo Effect Modifies …

For objects in the low Earth orbit region, uncertainty in atmospheric density estimation is an important source of orbit prediction error, which is critical for space traffic management activities such as the satellite conjunction analysis. This paper investigates the evolution of orbit error distribution in the presence of atmospheric density uncertainties, which are modeled using probabilistic machine learning techniques. The recently proposed "HASDM-ML," "CHAMP-ML," and "MSIS-UQ" machine learning models for density estimation (Licata and Mehta, 2022b; Licata et al., 2022b) are used in this work. The investigation is convoluted because of the spatial and temporal correlation of the atmospheric density …

Insensitive munitions formulations that include 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) are replacing traditional explosive compounds. While these new formulations have superior safety characteristics, the compounds have greater environmental mobility, raising concern over potential contamination and cleanup of training and manufacturing facilities. Here, we examine the mechanisms and products of NTO photolysis in simulated sunlight to further inform NTO degradation in sunlit surface waters. We demonstrate that NTO produces singlet oxygen, and that dissolved oxygen increases the NTO photolysis rate in deionized water. The rate of NTO photolysis is independent of concentration and decreases slightly in the presence of Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter. …

The Energy Requirement for Biosynthesis Plays an Important Role in an Organism's Life History, as It Determines Growth Rate, and Tradeoffs with the Investment in Somatic Maintenance. This Energetic Trait is Different between Painted Lady (Vanessa Cardui) and Turkestan Cockroach (Blatta Lateralis) Due to the Different Life Histories. Butterfly Caterpillars (Holometabolous) Grow 30-Fold Faster, and the Energy Cost of Biosynthesis is 20 Times Cheaper, Compared to Cockroach Nymphs (Hemimetabolous). We Hypothesize that Physiologically the Difference in the Energy Cost is Partially Attributed to the Differences in Protein Retention and Turnover Rate: Species with Higher Energy Cost May Have a Lower …

In this paper, we develop and analyze a finite element projection method for magnetohydrodynamics equations in Lipschitz domain. A fully discrete scheme based on Euler semi-implicit method is proposed, in which continuous elements are used to approximate the Navier–Stokes equations and H(curl) conforming Nédélec edge elements are used to approximate the magnetic equation. One key point of the projection method is to be compatible with two different spaces for calculating velocity, which leads one to obtain the pressure by solving a Poisson equation. The results show that the proposed projection scheme meets a discrete energy stability. In addition, with the …

Suppressing White-Noise Interference For Orbital Angular Momentum Waves Via The Forward-Backward Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
When the orbital angular momentum (OAM)-carrying beam propagates in a highly boisterous environment, it causes the degradation of the OAM modes' purity, which brings the crosstalk in the demultiplexing process. To address this issue, we extend the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method to suppress white-noise interferences of OAM by using the forward-backward DMD (FBDMD) approach. The FBDMD-based scheme retrieves the noise-free DMD mapping matrix corresponding to the actual OAM's topological charges by combining the forward and backward DMD mapping matrix in the noisy environment and consequently reduces the crosstalk, particularly for sorting the superposed OAM modes. Numerical examples are provided …

Ceramic On-Demand Extrusion (CODE) is a direct ink writing process which allows for the creation of near theoretically dense ceramic components with large cross-sections due to oil-assisted drying. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) colloidal pastes (∼d50 ≲ 1 µm) were used in CODE to produce dense (multi-road infill and ≳ 98% relative density), large continuous volume (> 1 cm3), and high fidelity (nozzle diameters ≲ 1 mm) structural ceramic components. However, many of these printed components underwent significant particle migration after forming. The reason for this particle migration defect was investigated using the coffee-ring effect for dilute solutions and rheological methods for …

Fly ash (FA) – an industrial byproduct – is used to partially substitute Portland cement (PC) in concrete to mitigate concrete's environmental impact. Chemical composition and structure of FAs significantly impact hydration kinetics and compressive strength of concrete. Due to the substantial diversity in these physicochemical attributes of FAs, it has been challenging to develop a generic theoretical framework – and, therefore, theory-based analytical models – that could produce reliable, a priori predictions of properties of [PC + FA] binders. In recent years, machine learning (ML) – which is purely data-driven, as opposed to being derived from theorical underpinnings – …
