Binary Nucleation. Ii. Time Lags, Gerald Wilemski
Binary Nucleation. Ii. Time Lags, Gerald Wilemski
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The role of the time lag needed to attain steady state nucleation in binary vapors is discussed. Under appropriate conditions it is possible to obtain both a large predicted rate of binary nucleation and a large time lag. In this circumstance, homogeneous nucleation of the more concentrated component may be the predominant process. It is of obvious importance to the experimentalist to differentiate between these possibilities. Approximate formulas for the time lags are developed, and representative calculations for the ethanol-water system are reported.

Double Beta Decay Of ¹²⁸Te, Edward W. Hennecke, Oliver Manuel, Dwarka D. Sabu
Double Beta Decay Of ¹²⁸Te, Edward W. Hennecke, Oliver Manuel, Dwarka D. Sabu
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The half-life of 128Te relative to the half-life of 130Te has been found to be t12128t12130=(1.59±0.05)×103 by measurement of the ββ-decay products, 128Xe and 130Xe, in a geologically old (2.4×109 yr) telluride ore. These results yield an upper limit on the lepton nonconservation parameter, η≤0.8×10-4. RADIOACTIVITY ββ-decay 128Te; measured T1/2=1.5×1024 yr; deduced η≤0.8×10-4. Detected excess 128Xe in old Te ore.

Differential Cross Sections For Elastic And Inelastic Scattering Of 15-100-Kev Li⁺ By He, John T. Park, Victor Pol, James E. Lawler, Jacob M. George, John E. Aldag, John W. Parker, Jerry Peacher
Differential Cross Sections For Elastic And Inelastic Scattering Of 15-100-Kev Li⁺ By He, John T. Park, Victor Pol, James E. Lawler, Jacob M. George, John E. Aldag, John W. Parker, Jerry Peacher
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sets of energy-loss spectra for Li+ incident on He that were taken at a series of scattering angles were used to calculate differential cross sections. Differential cross sections are given for elastic scattering and for excitation of the He (n=2) states. The differential cross section is also given for excitation of states corresponding to a 60-eV energy loss. These inelastic differential cross sections exhibit maxima at scattering angles greater than zero. The velocity dependence of the cross sections can be compensated by displaying the elastic data in ρ-vs-τ plots and the inelastic data in ρ-vs-E3/2θ plots. When …

This Paper Discusses an Algorithm for Optimizing the Density and Parallelism of Micro coded Routines in Micro programmable Machines. Besides the Algorithm itself, the Algorithm's Uses, Adaptability to Conventional Machine Characteristics, and Architectural Requirements Are Also Discussed and Analyzed. Even Though the Paper Proposes a Hardware Implementation of the Algorithm, the Algorithm is Viewed as an Integral Part of the Entire Microcode Generation and Usage Process, from Initial High-Level Input into a Software Microcode Compiler Down to Machine-Level Execution of the Resultant Microcode on the Host Machine. It is Believed that, by Removing Much of the Traditionally Time-Consuming and Machine-Dependent …

Energy Efficiency And Conservation Of Building Hvac Systems Using The Axcess Energy Analysis Computer Program, Ronald H. Howell, Harry J. Sauer Jr.
Energy Efficiency And Conservation Of Building Hvac Systems Using The Axcess Energy Analysis Computer Program, Ronald H. Howell, Harry J. Sauer Jr.
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
This paper discusses the use of the AXCESS-UMR energy analysis computer program applied to two different buildings. The monthly and yearly energy requirements of many of the commonly used HVAC systems for a single-story multi-zone building are found and compared. Energy conservation techniques are also evaluated for a two-story St. Louis office building.
Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser
Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
My remarks will be directed to four points:
First, that energy is the life blood of our economy, and that its use or conservation is far from a simple matter of personal habits of waste or frugality. In other words, the vital role energy plays in the production of goods and services should be distinguished from its use in their consumption.
Second, that our excessive dependence on our two scarcest energy resources -- oil and natural gas -- is the core of the energy problem, both U.S. and worldwide.
Third, that limiting our time horizon to this winter, next summer, …

Control By Code Of Energy Usage In Building Systems, Harry J. Sauer Jr., Ronald H. Howell
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Space heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration accounts for over 30% of the total energy use in the U.S. ASHRAE Standard 90P, ENERGY CONSERVATION IN NEW BUILDING DESIGN, sets forth requirements for the design of all types of new buildings, covering their exterior envelopes and selection of their HVAC, service water heating, electrical distribution and illuminating systems and equipment for efficient use of energy. This paper reviews the current status, content, and implications of the proposed energy standard and reports some experience with its use.
Centralized Solar Wind Home Heating, Russell Peterson, Duane Cromack
Centralized Solar Wind Home Heating, Russell Peterson, Duane Cromack
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
In the immediacy of national goals for energy independence, the need emerges to use dialectic methods to diminish the energy consumptive characteristics of the typical home.
At the cutting edge of resourceful progress are the residential developments which embrace alternative and conservative energy techniques. In conjunction with such a planned, low impact community, this paper proposes a cluster-centralized system which utilizes wind energy in combination with solar thermal energy for space and domestic water heating.
A description of the random solar-wind resource embodies a matching problem that in turn reveals the benefits of the combined mode of energy collection. Though …
Energy And Transportation Policy, James S. Sagner
Energy And Transportation Policy, James S. Sagner
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Energy shortages of recent years suggest a re-examination of national transportation policy. The lack of a coordinated approach to the solution of urban cogestion inhibits potential short-run responses to gasoline shortfalls. Longer-range policy, particularly in the context of severe financial constraints, must be carefully integrated with demonstrated patterns of urban travel and population and employment densities. Given these considerations, metropolitan areas now planning or constructing rapid rail facilities may be selecting inappropriate responses to the problem of urban access.
