An Examination Of The Adaptive Random Search Technique, M. W. Heuckroth, J. L. Gaddy, L. D. Gaines

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Random search procedures have recently been successfully applied to the optimization of a variety of chemical engineering problems, including optimization of chemical processes by flow sheet simulation. These procedures represent the independent variables as random variables described by probability distributions. The adaptive random search procedure centers the distribution for each variable about the best search point found and examines this region for a better point. Thus, this technique has the ability of continuously moving the search region toward the optimum, which is particularly advantageous in following constraints. This study examines the efficiency of the adaptive random search technique as applied …

Mass Transfer In Dispersed And Continous Phases For Creeping Flow Of Fluid Spheres Through Power Law Fluids, Türker Gürkan, Robert M. Wellek Jan 1976

Mass Transfer In Dispersed And Continous Phases For Creeping Flow Of Fluid Spheres Through Power Law Fluids, Türker Gürkan, Robert M. Wellek

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The diffusion equation was numerically solved by an implicit finite-difference method for the purpose of calculating the continuous phase Sherwood number, Sh, for mass transfer from an internally circulating Newtonian droplet traveling through a non-Newtonian power-law-type continuous phase in the creeping flow regime. The Mohan stream functions were used in the calculations in order to approximate the velocity profile inside and outside the droplet. The calculated Sh is presented as a function of the Peclet number, Pe, power-law index, n, and a viscosity ratio parameter, X. Sh increases as n decreases in the pseudoplastic region. The dependence of Sh on …

Generalized Correlations For Molecular Weight And Concentration Dependence Of Zero-Shear Viscosity Of High Polymer Solutions., J. L. Zakin, R. Wu, H. Luh, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Results of a study are presented which show that two correlations of viscosity-concentration data are useful representations for data over wide ranges of mol. wt and up to at least moderately high concentrations for both good and fair solvents. Low mol. wt polymer solutions (below the critical entanglement mol. wt M//c) generally have higher viscosities than predicted by the correlations. One correlation is eta //s//p/c left bracket eta right bracket versus k prime left bracket eta right bracket c, where eta //s//p is specific viscosity, c is polymer concentration, left bracket eta right bracket is intrinsic viscosity, and k prime …

Thomson's Monopoles, I. Adawi

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The angular momentum L of the electromagnetic field due to an electric point charge e, and a magnetic point charge (pole) g, is calculated by several methods to obtain J. J. Thomson's result that L = eg/c, and L is directed along the line joining the electric monopole to the magnetic monopole. The relation to Dirac's monopoles is discussed, and particle size is considered. © 1991, American Association of Physics Teachers. All rights reserved.

Radiative Lifetimes Of Some Group Ii Ions By The Hanle Effect In A Fast-Flowing Helium Afterglow, F. H.K. Rambow, Laird D. Schearer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Radiative lifetimes of the first P322 state of Mgu, Cau, Znu, Sru, Cdu, and Bau are reported as measured by the Hanle effect in a fast-flowing helium afterglow. They are, respectively, 3.65(0.12), 6.61(0.30), 2.4(0.3), 6.64(0.10), 2.86(0.25), 6.78(0.40) in units of 10-9 sec. The ions in the afterglow are created by Penning ionization of the neutral metal atoms, thus providing a steady-state, field-free region for observation. Comparisons are made with measurements by other methods, and discrepancies are discussed. © 1976 The American Physical Society.

A Suboptimal Control Law To Improve The Transient Stability Of Power Systems, Aditya Kumar, Earl F. Richards Jan 1976

A Suboptimal Control Law To Improve The Transient Stability Of Power Systems, Aditya Kumar, Earl F. Richards

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The application of optimal control theory to damp the electromechanical oscillations associated with the transient conditions in power systems has been given little attention. A suboptimal control law which minimizes the sum of the performance indices of the two linear systems given by a piecewise linear model of a power system improves the transient stability better than the usual "optimal" control law obtained from a linearized model. Further, the suboptimal control law presented in this paper assures stability of the system for all disturbances resulting in rotor oscillations of magnitudes less than a preselected limit. Detection In Image Dependent Noise, David R. Cunningham, Robert D. Laramore, Eamon Barrett Jan 1976

Detection In Image Dependent Noise, David R. Cunningham, Robert D. Laramore, Eamon Barrett

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The detection of two-dimensional optical signals which have been corrupted by noise is considered. Discussion is limited to the detection of a known object in a known location. The problem is approached from the classical statistical technique of hypothesis testing. Initially the solution is formulated in very general terms. The decision rule is derived for a signal distorted by noise of an unspecified type which may include signal dependent noise. Once the decision rule is obtained, the probabilities of false alarm and detection are evaluated from a priori knowledge of the noise and imaging system. The general results are applied …

Influence Of Turbidity On The Stratification Development Of A Deep Water Reservoir., David Allen Prouty Jan 1976

Influence Of Turbidity On The Stratification Development Of A Deep Water Reservoir., David Allen Prouty

Masters Theses

"The influence of turbidity on the diurnal temperature distribution and thermocline development in a deep water impoundment which is exposed to heating and cooling loads by convection, evaporation, and radiation is examined analytically. The diurnal behavior of the solar load, directional and spectral, is used with an isotropic multiple scattering model to simulate the attenuation of solar flux by turbid water. The diurnal behavior of the ambient temperature, humidity and wind speed were mathematically modeled to simulate the local (Phelps Co.) spring time of the year. The combined conduction and radiation energy transfer through the water was treated as a …

Non-Cash Incentives And Worker Motivation, Daniel Franklin Cole Jan 1976

Non-Cash Incentives And Worker Motivation, Daniel Franklin Cole

Masters Theses

"A problem of growing concern in the United States deals with the poor results of the nation's businesses in terms of productivity. The U.S. is now suffering the worst decline in productivity in a generation. While part of this decline can be attributed to economic conditions, data indicates that the labor force could be more productive if it wanted to do so. A study has shown that 52% of all workers feel they aren't producing at full capacity. Alienation of the American worker is identified as one of the most important contributors to this problem.

Because it is often difficult …

Geology, Mineralogy, And Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of The El Paso Gold Mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado, Charles Albon Lane Jan 1976

Geology, Mineralogy, And Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of The El Paso Gold Mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado, Charles Albon Lane

Masters Theses

"The Cripple Creek district consists of a deeply- eroded, breccia-filled volcanic subsidence basin. Subsidence of the basin occurred along fissures formed by fracturing during the Laramide orogeny. The material filling the crater probably developed first as fissure flows. Erosion of the volcanics formed the material now filling the basin. Volcanic activity was accompanied by intrusion of numerous sills, dikes, and stocks of several different rock types into the breccia and surrounding granite, punctuated by occasional explosive activity. The majority of the mines in the district lie within the volcanic center; however, a few important ones, most notably the El Paso …

Void-Strengthening In Aluminum And Its Nature, P. G. Manusmare, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Temperature and strain rate dependence of yield strength were used to analyze the nature of aluminum strengthened by the formation of voids. Aluminum rods 99.999% pure were quenched and heat treated to form voids with an approximate density of 1013-1014 voids/cm3. Voids in selected samples were observed by electron microscopy. The yield strength of the void strengthened samples was measured at various temperatures from 77 to 593 K and at two strain rates, 3.33 x 10-2/s and 1.67 x 10-3/s. Tests at room temperature and at 77 K were made at various strain rates. The similarity of Coulomb's approach to …

On The Effects Of Antimony And Glue On Zinc Electrocrystallization Behaviour, D. J. Robinson, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation has been made to determine the effects that additions of glue and antimony have on the electrowinning of zinc from acid sulphate solutions. In particular, the zinc crystal growth and cathode current efficiencies were studied in an attempt to establish a correlation between morphology and the nature of the additives. Operating conditions of 55 A ft-2* and 35°C were used for most of the experiments with electrolyte concentrations of approximately 55 gl-1 zinc and 150 gl-1 H2SO4. Additional runs were made at 40,75 and 100 Aft-2 at 30,40 and 50°C in order to verify certain trends. Primarily by …

Computer Analysis Of 3-Phase Induction Motor Operation On Rural Open-Delta Distribution Systems, Stephen C. Seematter, Earl F. Richards Jan 1976

Computer Analysis Of 3-Phase Induction Motor Operation On Rural Open-Delta Distribution Systems, Stephen C. Seematter, Earl F. Richards

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Open-delta/open-delta and open-wye/open-delta transformer banks are often used as an economic means of supplying simultaneous single-phase and 3-phase loads in rural areas. If the 3-phase load is an induction motor, the inherent voltage unbalance causes increased losses and uneven heating that may lead to motor failure. Often these motors are submersible or deep well pump motors located in remote unattended areas or air conditioning motors which may not have sufficient over-design to handle the voltage unbalance. The theory analyzing the open-delta distribution system has existed for many years, however, because of the tedious and almost infinite differences in distribution topology, …

Horizon Profile Checkpoints For Low-Altitude Aircraft, Gordon E. Carlson, George L. Bair, Charles M. Benoit

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A technique for utilizing on-board sensed horizon profiles and computer stored reference horizon profiles to provide navigation check points for low-altitude aircraft is described. The technique has been analyzed using digitized terrain data and computer simulations to select the best method of horizon profile comparison, to determine horizon data density requirements, and to provide performance comparisons, system error limitations, and tradeoffs. Results of these analyses are shown to support feasibility conclusions and system parameter tradeoffs. Copyright © 1976 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Predicting Natural Frequencies Of A Hydrodynamically Lubricated Journal Bearing With Constant Oil Supply Pressure, D. C. Edwards, N. Khorzad, Charles L. Edwards

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The analytical and experimental investigations reported here deal with the natural frequencies and system behavior of a full journal bearing subjected to a small sinusoidal load superimposed on a large unidirectional static load. The analysis, verified by experimentation, shows that the bearing can be regarded as two independent second-order systems acting perpendicular to each other. The variable coefficients of the equations of motion cause the bearing to behave as an underdamped system for low values of static eccentricity ratio to, and as an overdamped system for intermediate values of to. The bearing tends to be unstable above a particular to. …

Development Of Helicopter Flight Path Models, Alfred Fermelia, Donald A. Gyorog, V. J. Flanigan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The objective of this paper is to present general techniques for simulating helicopter flight trajectory response. During flight the pilot manipulates the controls either to trim the helicopter for steady flight by balancing the external forces and moments or to produce a desired maneuver by controlling the unbalance of these forces and moments. Discussions of the physical phenomena involved with the aerodynamics of the rotors and fuselage are given in [1] through [3]. The simulated control function will be composed forward-aft cyclic, lateral cyclic, pedal, and collective. This control will be represented by the vector
