Computer Graphics As An Aid To Teaching Geometric Transformations, Sister Joseph K. Mcadams, Arlan R. Dekock Feb 1976

Computer Graphics As An Aid To Teaching Geometric Transformations, Sister Joseph K. Mcadams, Arlan R. Dekock

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

During the past several years, there has been much discussion and controversy over what should be taught in high school mathematics, in general, and in high school geometry, in particular. Numerous mathematicians have encouraged the teaching of transformations as part of the standard high school mathematics curriculum[1-4,6-9]. The results of a recent survey of high school teachers of mathematics indicate that 19% have taught geometric transformations, 26% feel adequately prepared to teach such a topic, and 50% would like to teach the topic if materials were available for the average college prep student[5].

Feasibility Of Integrated Ocean Thermal Gradient-Nuclear Plants For The Production Of Electrical Power, Frank Ferrer, Donald Sasscer Jan 1976

Feasibility Of Integrated Ocean Thermal Gradient-Nuclear Plants For The Production Of Electrical Power, Frank Ferrer, Donald Sasscer

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A study was made of the feasibility of integrating an ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) electrical power plant with a nuclear power plant. The integration was such that the waste heat of the nuclear plant was used to augment the thermal efficiency of the OTEC plant. The study was performed for three shore line sites of Puerto Rico where deep cold water is found between 2 and 10 miles from shore.

Resource Recovery From Solid Waste: The Story Of Union Electric's Solid Waste Utilization System, David L. Klumb, Paul R. Brendel

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper covers the design and development of a comprehensive resource recovery system capable of serving the solid waste disposal needs of the Greater St. Louis area comprising 11,500km2 (4500 sq. mi.). This 7.2 x 106 kg (8000 ton) per day operation will convert solid waste into milled fuel for cofiring with pulverized coal in utility boilers, and will recover magnetic and non-magnetic metals, all in an environmentally acceptable manner. Scheduled for operation in 1979, the system will be built and operated as a private enterprise venture of Union Colliery Company, a subsidiary of Union Electric Company.

Sample Design For Electricity Pricing Experiments: Anticipated Precision For A Time-Of-Day Pricing Experiment, Dennis J. Aigner Jan 1976

Sample Design For Electricity Pricing Experiments: Anticipated Precision For A Time-Of-Day Pricing Experiment, Dennis J. Aigner

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The primary goal of a pricing experiment is basically the same as that for an experiment in direct load control: To discover the effects of time-of-day pricing on the shape of the daily load curve for a particular customer or class of customers. For the pricing experiment, it is also of interest to know how those effects are related to the pricing structure itself.

In this paper, we consider two alternative models of kwh consumption for residential customers as the basis for calculating an optimal experimental design, and compare them in terms of the levels of precision of estimation (for …

A Class Of Functional Equations And Mielnik Probability Spaces, S. J. Guccione, Caslav V. Stanojevic Jan 1976

A Class Of Functional Equations And Mielnik Probability Spaces, S. J. Guccione, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let S be the unit sphere of a normed real linear space N and let (S, p) be a Mielnik space of dimension two. For p(x, y) = f(‖x+y‖), x, yєS, where /is a continuous, strictly increasing function from [0, 2] onto [0, 1], it has been shown that (S, p) being two dimensional is equivalent to N being an inner product space. In some polarization problems modeled on the unit sphere of an inner product space, the transition probability p(x, y) may not be as well behaved as p(x, y) = f(‖x + y‖). In order to provide a …

On L¹ Convergence Of Certain Cosine Sums, John W. Garrett, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is shown that to a certain cosine series f, a Rees-Stanojević cosine sumn can be associated such that gn converges to f pointwise, and a necessary and sufficient condition for L1 convergence of gn to f is given. As a corollary to that result we have a generalization of the classical result of this kind. Other corollaries are given concerning the well-known integrability conditions. © 1975, American Mathematical Society.

On L¹ Convergence Of Certain Cosine Sums, John W. Garrett, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rees and Stanojevic introduced a new class of modified cosine sums (equation omitted) and found a necessary and sufficient condition for integrability of these modified cosine sums. Here we show that to every classical cosine series f with coefficients of bounded variation, a Rees-Stanqjevic cosine sum gn can be associated such that gn converges to f pointwise, and a necessary and sufficient condition for Lx convergence of gn to f is given. As a corollary to that result we have a generalization of the classical result of this kind. Examples are given using the well-known integrability conditions. © 1976 American …

Structural Stability Research Council: Proceedings 1976, Structural Stability Research Council

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

One of the purposes of the Council is to maintain a forum where problems related to the design and behavior of columns and other compression elements in metal structures can be presented for evaluation and discussion. The Annual Technical Session provides an opportunity to carry out this function. The 1976 Annual Technical Session was held on March 2 and 3 at the SheratonBiltmore Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. Fifty-five persons attended the session and nineteen papers were delivered. A panel discussion on "New Ideas on Stability of Multistory Buildings" was held in the evening of March 2, 1976. the panelists were …

Report On Screw Fastened Sheet Steel Connections For Canadian Steel Industries Construction Council, Volume I, R. W. Eastman Jan 1976

Report On Screw Fastened Sheet Steel Connections For Canadian Steel Industries Construction Council, Volume I, R. W. Eastman

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Ultimate load data is presented from more than 1600 tests on sample connections made with different thicknesses of zinc-coated sheet steel and a variety of commonly used thread forming and self-drilling fasteners. The three fundamental loading conditions examined were pull-over, pull-out and single lap shear.

Empirical relationships have been developed which allow interpolation of the data within the range of sheet steel thicknesses tested.

Type AB and type A thread forming fasteners, and a number of different self-drilling fasteners were tested, in sizes from #14 (.250 in.) to #8 (.164 in.) diameter. Flat metal washers and a variety of sealing …

The Extremal Structure Of Locally Compact Convex Sets, J. C. Hankins, Roy M. Rakestraw Jan 1976

The Extremal Structure Of Locally Compact Convex Sets, J. C. Hankins, Roy M. Rakestraw

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let X be a locally compact closed convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff topological linear space E. Then every exposed point of X is strongly exposed. The definitions of denting (strongly extreme) ray and strongly exposed ray are given for convex subsets of E. If X does not contain a line, then every extreme ray is strongly extreme and every exposed ray is strongly exposed. An example is given to show that the hypothesis that X be locally compact is necessary in both cases. © 1976 Pacific Journal of Mathematics. All rights reserved.

Energy - Minerals - Environment: How Now Brown Cow?, Bobby G. Wixson Jan 1976

Energy - Minerals - Environment: How Now Brown Cow?, Bobby G. Wixson

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Energy, technical, social, political, economic, and environmental problems are all people related problems which will continue to increase along with the world's population. With the growing demands for more energy and minerals along with the constraints of protecting the environment, new approaches must be considered to these complex problems.

Energy sources, modifications, alternatives, and new developments must be considered for the present as short term resources (next 25- 30 years) and in the future as long range research necessary to develop and implement new technology (25 years on). Major energy sources and their environmental considerations are generally classified as:
