The Variations Of Charpy V-Notch Impact Test Properties In Steel Plates, Aisi Technical Committee On Plates And Shapes Jan 1979

The Variations Of Charpy V-Notch Impact Test Properties In Steel Plates, Aisi Technical Committee On Plates And Shapes

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

A survey of the variation to be expected in Charpy V-Notch tests obtained from plates was conducted by the Committee on Product Standards at the request of the Committee on General Metallurgy. The results of the survey are presented in this report.

The survey data consisted of longitudinal and transverse impact test values obtained from seven specified locations on plates produced to ASTM A-572 as-rolled, A-516 normalized and A-537 quenched and tempered. Three testing temperatures were used for each grade.

The data were collected from industry production during 1973 and 1974. Sufficient data were received to estimate limits of variation …

Structural Stability Research Council: Proceedings 1979, Structural Stability Research Council

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

One of the purposes of the Council is to maintain a forum where problems related to the design and behavior of columns and other compression elements in metal structures can be presented for evaluation and discussion. The Annual Technical Session provides an opportunity to carry out this function. The 1979 Annual Technical Session was held on April 24 and 25 at The William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eighty-five persons attended the Session and twenty-seven papers were delivered. A panel discussion on "Stability of Space Frame Structures" was held in the evening of April 24, 1979. The panelists were R. …

Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Study Of Design Formats And Safety Index Combined With Calibration Of The Aisi Formulas For Cold Work And Effective Design Width, Trinh-Ngoc Rang, Wei-Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos Jan 1979

Galambos

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In the design of steel buildings, the "Allowable Stress Criteria" have long been used for the design of cold-formed steel structural members in the United States (1), Canada (2) and other countries (3). Even though the theoretical concepts of risk and reliability analyses have been available for some time (8-10) and the slgnlflcance of such concepts in structural safety and design is well recognized, the probabilistic method has not been explicitly adopted as a basis for the American design standard for steel structures. In view of the fact that the mathematical theory of probability, which has been so successfully …

Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Statistical Analysis Of Mechanical Properties And Thickness Of Materials Combined With Calibrations Of The Aisi Design Provisions Of Unstiffened Compression Elements And Connections, Trinh-Ngoc Rang, Wei-Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION This report presents the progress made on the development of the load and resistance factor design of cold-formed steel following the preparation of the First Progress Report. In Article 11.1, the statistical analyses of the tested values versus the specified values on mechanical properties and thicknesses of the steel sheets and strip are discussed. More than 4,000 tensile coupon tests on mechanical properties and 1,400 data on thickness of steel sheets have been collected and analyzed. For the purpose of formulating the procedures to be used for calibration of various provisions of the AISI Specification, the required formulas are …

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson Jan 1979

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of Missouri's new lead belt within the past decade has provided an excellent opportunity to study the dissemination and effects of heavy metals in a deciduous forest ecosystem. Primary lead smelters, within the new lead belt have been identified as potential sources of cadmium as well as lead, zinc, and copper. Sintering and blast furnace operations tend to produce significant quantities of small particulates highly enriched in cadmium and other heavy metals. At one smelter, samples of stack particulate emissions indicate that as much as 0.21 lb of cadmium may be released to the atmosphere per hour. This …

Plasma Polymerization Of Tetrafluoroethylene. Iii. Capacitive Audio Frequency (10 Khz) And Ac Discharge, N. (Nicholas) C. Morosoff, H. Yasuda, E. S. Brandt, C. N. Reilley Jan 1979

Plasma Polymerization Of Tetrafluoroethylene. Iii. Capacitive Audio Frequency (10 Khz) And Ac Discharge, N. (Nicholas) C. Morosoff, H. Yasuda, E. S. Brandt, C. N. Reilley

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is studied in a capacitively coupled system with internal electrodes using a 10 kHz (af) and a 60 Hz (ac) source. The emphasis is on identifying conditions that are compatible with continuous coating of plasma polymer on a substrate moving through the center of the interelectrode gap. Operation at a pressure below 100 mTorr is most favorable for deposition of a substantial portion of the plasma polymer on this substrate. Plasma polymer deposited in this way is characterized by ESCA and by deposition rate data and compared to that deposited using rf power in …

Mechanical Degradation Of High Molecular Weight Polymers In Dilute Solution, J. F.S. Yu, J. L. Zakin, Gary Kent Patterson Jan 1979

Mechanical Degradation Of High Molecular Weight Polymers In Dilute Solution, J. F.S. Yu, J. L. Zakin, Gary Kent Patterson

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical shear degradation of polydisperse Poly isobutene and monodisperse polystyrene in oils of different viscosities in the concentration range of 0.1% to 1% was studied using a high‐shear concentric cylinder viscometer under laminar and uniform well‐defined shear field conditions. Molecular weight distributions (MWDs) were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Degradation of polydisperse Poly isobutene solutions narrows the distributions principally through the breaking down of large molecules. Degradation of monodisperse polystyrene broadens the distributions at lower shear stress. At higher shear stresses, the distributions do not broaden as much but are still broader than those of the original polymer. …

Excitation Of Cd, Zn, And Sr By A Beam Of Active Nitrogen, D. W. Fahey, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer Jan 1979

Excitation Of Cd, Zn, And Sr By A Beam Of Active Nitrogen, D. W. Fahey, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excitation of the electronic levels of Cd, Zn, and Sr is observed when these metal vapors collide with a thermal-energy, active nitrogen beam. The beam is extracted from a glow discharge in pure N2. The active beam component is inferred to be vibrationally excited N2 in the A 3Σu+ electronic state. The absolute relative intensity of the emission lines in each element was measured. The excitation rates of the Cd and Zn target levels were found to depend exponentially on their energies indicating an effective temperature of approximately 4000°K. We believe that this temperature is related to the vibrational temperature …
