Nmr Investigations Of Aggregation Of Nonionic Surfactants In A Hydrocarbon Medium, Hugo Christenson, Stig Friberg, David W. Larsen
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Proton NMR, carabon-13 NMR, light-scattering, and density measurements were used to investigate association structures and molecular interactions during water solubilization in polyoxymethylene dodecyl ether/benzene systems at high surfactant concentrations. The results indicated an absence of association aggregates at low water concentrations. At water contents between 10 and 20%, association structures started to form, probably micelles of the inverse type, in which the water-polyoxymethylene chain interaction is the predominant feature. There is evidence that the average chain conformation changes with water content, and that bound water molecules are distributed evenly along the polyethoxyethylene chain. At higher water concentration, the results indicated …
Solutions Of Differential Inequalities And Existence Theorems For Multi-Point Boundry Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe
Solutions Of Differential Inequalities And Existence Theorems For Multi-Point Boundry Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe
Doctoral Dissertations
"Consider the boundary value problem y = 0, y(a) = 0, y(b) = O. The Green's function G(x,s) for this problem is negative for all (x,s) in (a,b) x (a,b). More generally, define the operator L by (formula presented).
If L is disconjugate on [a,b], then the Green's function for the problem
Ly = 0,
y(i) (x.) = O, j=1, ..., k and i=0, ..., nj-1
where rnj = n and a= x1 < x2 < ... < xk = b, satisfies the inequality (formula presented)
This implies G(x,s) satisfies the condition, called Condition S, that its sign is independent …
A Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Stability Of Small Prenucleation Water Clusters, Tze-Shan Chen
A Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Stability Of Small Prenucleation Water Clusters, Tze-Shan Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
"The dynamical stability and internal energy distribution of prenucleation water embryos have been studied by the molecular dynamic's method. Water clusters containing either five or twenty molecules were chosen to represent prenucleation embryos of small or intermediate size. A central force potential model of water which allows energy to be absorbed into intramolecular modes so that bond lengths and bond angles could adjust to changes in molecular environments was employed to describe the interaction between all pairs of atoms. The motion of the molecules was followed for extended time periods (of the order of several picoseconds) at each of a …

The Effect Of Availability Improvement Of A Nuclear Power Plant On The Cost Of Generating Electricity, Seyyed Mohammad Reza Nejat
Doctoral Dissertations
"The objective of this investigation is to study the economic benefits in operating a nuclear power plant as a result of improving the availability of the secondary (steam) loop of the plant. A new method has been developed to obtain availability, frequency of failure, probability and frequency of operation, cycle time, and uptime for different capacity states of a parallel-series system having components with failure and repair rates distributed exponentially. The method has been applied to different subsystems, systems, and the secondary loop as a whole. The effect of having spare parts for several components, as measured by savings in …
Amorphous-Damage Depth Distributions And The Amorphization Of Silicon By Ion Bombardment, Joseph Sadowski
Amorphous-Damage Depth Distributions And The Amorphization Of Silicon By Ion Bombardment, Joseph Sadowski
Doctoral Dissertations
"Depth distributions of the radiation damage in moderately to heavily ion bombarded silicon was obtained in the following manner: The electron spin resonance signal from an ion bombarded silicon target was measured. This ESR signal was proportional to the amount of amorphous silicon present in the target. A thin oxide of specified thickness was then grown on the surface of the target by anodic oxidation and subsequently stripped off in a HF etch. The depth of the stripped impression below the unoxidized surface was measured using a multibeam interferometer. The amorphous ESR signal was again measured, and the strip / …
Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 Level By Impact Of 15-100 Kev He⁺ Ions, John Eldon Aldag
Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 Level By Impact Of 15-100 Kev He⁺ Ions, John Eldon Aldag
Doctoral Dissertations
Differential cross sections Ear excitation of atomic hydrogen to its n = 2 level by 15-100 keV He+ ions have been determined for cm. angles from Oto 8 m rad. The cross sections were obtained from an analysis of the angular distribution of the scattered ions which had lost an energy corresponding to the excitation of the target to its n= 2 level. The shape of the differential cross section changes rapidly with increasing incident energy. At 15 keV, the cross section falls off by a factor of 5 in 6 m rad. At 100 keV, the cross section …

"To evaluate the In-Core Injection System (ICIS) performance during a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) due to a major rupture in the primary system of a pressurized water reactor (PWR), tests were conducted using the thermal-hydraulic computer code RELAP4/MOD5.
The results for the overall plant system show that the maximum core average fuel cladding temperature reached during an intermediate size cold-leg break in a Combustion Engineering PWR with ICIS is equal to the initial operating temperature of 335°c (636°F). The maximum core average fuel cladding temperature reached during a large size cold-leg break with ICIS is 478°c (893°F). This temperature is approximately …
A Development Of Regression Models For Predicting Two-Phase Relative Permeability In Consolidated Rock, Mehdi Honarpour
A Development Of Regression Models For Predicting Two-Phase Relative Permeability In Consolidated Rock, Mehdi Honarpour
Doctoral Dissertations
"The primary objective of this study was the development of prediction equations for the water-oil imbibition relative permeability and gas-oil drainage relative permeability from experimental data.
Laboratory relative permeability data along with the corresponding rock and fluid properties were collected, and stepwise linear regression analysis was applied. Relative permeability models were developed in terms of rock and fluid properties.
The prediction models were tested against laboratory values and previously published correlations. It was found that the models developed in this study yield results that are generally in better agreement with experimental values than the previously published correlations"--Abstract p. ii

Ion implantation has a substantial effect on the heterogeneous nucleation of water and ice. An enhancement of water nucleation and a suppression of ice nucleation occurred for samples of silicon implanted with ions of various species and dosage. These effects were noticeable only for samples implanted with ion doses approaching or exceeding the critical dose necessary to produce amorphous silicon. The behavior of the water droplet and ice crystal growth can be related to the amount of ion produced damage to the substrate surface. The nature of the damage can be controlled by variation of the incident ion species, dose, …

The use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to enhance the detection of moving targets in ground clutter is examined. The improvement factor, defined as the signal-to-clutter ratio at the DFT processor output compared with that of the input, is given as a function of normalized clutter spectral width for various weighting functions on the DFT input. The effect of quantization of the weights on the improvement factor is also examined. Copyright © 1980 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

This paper reports an experimental investigation of surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) energy distribution on railroad tracks. Radial field distribution of SEW on 112-lb/yd rails were examined utilizing a dipole diode detector. Laboratory and on-site measurements were made. The field strength distribution data at frequencies 3.000, 6.000, and 9.733 GHz show that the main part of the SEW TE mode energy (almost 90 percent) is on the head of the rail. Use of dielectric augmentation on the side of rails resulted in lower attenuation of the propagating SEW. Thick dielectric strip augmentation data shows enhancement of SEW propagation in agreement with …

The design of a unique special purpose instrument for calibrating and testing power system automatic synchronizing and speed matching relays is described. The unit is constructed using inexpensive integrated circuit components and provides a direct digital readout of slip frequency from 0.05 Hz to 0.50 Hz resolution and advance angle from 0 to 99.9 degrees with 0.1-degree resolution. This device eliminates the need for expensive test equipment previously required, expedites the test procedure and solves the problem of referencing against a variable bus frequency source. Solubilities of MgO in aqueous HC1 solutions at 23°±3°C were measured and combined with analyses of neat magnesium oxychloride cements, cured in sealed containers, to construct an equilibrium phase diagram for the system MgO‐MgCl2‐H2O. Specific gravities and acidities of solutions saturated with MgO and relative humidities of vapor phases over sealed samples were measured and combined with XRD data to define the compositions in equilibrium with two crystalline phases. Studies of relative reaction rates indicated that the 5–1–8 phase crystallizes more rapidly than the 3·1·8 phase and that cements near the 3·1·8 composition react rapidly with atmospheric CO …

Nickel carbide (NiC3) films are formed by the carburization of nickel films in CO at 350°C. The presence of Ni3C is demonstrated by transmission electron diffraction. The carbon Auger electron signal of Ni3C is identical with the carbon Auger spectra attributed to Ni3C by previous authors. The position of the C 1s electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis peak is within 1 eV of the C 1s peak produced by graphite. The grain size of polycrystalline Ni3C is significantly larger than the grain size of the nickel film from which it is grown. © 1979.

A thermal beam of helium (23S1) metastable atoms was used to excite coherently the 2P3/2 levels of Ca, Sr and Ba in a Penning ionizing collision. The coherent excitation of the ions appears as a linear polarization of the optical emission from the excited ions. The degree of linear polarization is 5.5, 3.5 and 0.5% for Ca, Sr and Ba, respectively, with the polarization parallel to the beam direction. Hanle effect signals from the 2P3/2 level of Sr were observed and the radioactive decay rate measured.

The ion implantation of boron has been found to be an effective method for increasing the conductivity of strontium titanate. A highly conductive layer was formed by implantations at doses of 3.6x1016 to 1.0x1017 ions/cm2, using an accelerating voltage of 100 kV, corresponding to a boron range of about 300 nm. The conductivity of the implanted layer was found to be further enhanced by about four orders of magnitude after annealing at 225 °C. The surface resistivity attained was typically 1000 Ω/square at room temperature. The resistance increased with rising temperature between 77 and 500 K. All samples were found …
