Classes Of L¹-Convergence Of Fourier And Fourier-Stieltjes Series, Časlav V. Stanojevic
Classes Of L¹-Convergence Of Fourier And Fourier-Stieltjes Series, Časlav V. Stanojevic
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is shown that the Fomin class FP (1
< 2) is a subclass of C ∩ B V, where C is the Garrett-Stanojevic class and B V the class of sequences of bounded variation. Wider classes of Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes series are found for which an lg n - o(1), n → ∞, is a necessary and sufficient condition for L1-convergence. For cosine series with coefficients in B V and n∆an = 0(1), n → ∞, necessary and sufficient integrability conditions are obtained. © 1981 American Mathematical Society.

Steel Deck Institute Diaphragm Design Manual First Edition, Larry D. Luttrell
Steel Deck Institute (SDI) Specifications and Manuals (1939 - present)
The Major Units Laboratory at West Virginia University has been involved in full-scale diaphragm studies for the past fifteen years. The work has covered tests on a wide range of deck panel types, metal building wall systems, panels with insulating concrete fill, and plywood assemblies, all used as diaphragms, and under static, cyclic, and dynamic loading. Connection performance, critical to diaphragm behavior, has been evaluated through an extensive test program covering arc-spot (puddle) welds, different types of screws, and power driven pins. These have established fastener strength limits and have been especially important for defining fastener flexibility factors.

"It is difficult to imagine a world without plastics. Although the development of most modern plastic materials took place after 1930, such matria1s are so common today that the word "plastic" is often used as an adjective to connote cheapness or lack of substance. Nevertheless, it 1s important to remember that for many uses plastics offer technical and cost advantages over other materials. "Wood warps and rots, iron rusts and much glass is brittle, yet no one disputes the enormous value of the s e mate r i a 1 s. " although plastic (Bryd son, 1970, p. 7.) Similarly, …

Excitation Transfer Collisions And Electron Seeding Processes In A Resonantly Excited Sodium Vapor, D. J. Krebs, Laird D. Schearer
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A dense sodium vapor in a high-pressure buffer of argon has been simultaneously excited by short (4 ns) laser pulses from two lasers: the first tuned to one of the D line transitions at 589 nm and the second tuned to the photoionization threshold of the 3p states near 406 nm. The temporal evolution of the system was studied with and without the photoionizing laser pulses. At early times (∼100 ns) excited state populations are determined by energy transfer collisions between two laser-excited 3p atoms while the ion/electron density is controlled by super elastic heating of "seed" electrons followed by …
Adhesion Of Glow Discharge Polymers To Metals And Polymers, N. Inagaki, H. Yasuda
Adhesion Of Glow Discharge Polymers To Metals And Polymers, N. Inagaki, H. Yasuda
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Adhesion of glow discharge polymers to metals and polymers in an adhesive joint was measured by lap‐shear test and immersion in hot water of 70°C for an extended time. A glow discharge polymer was deposited onto polymers [polyethylene and poly(tetrafluoroethylene)] and metals (aluminum and stainless steel) prior to when the polymer and metal were joined. It is found that the lap‐shear strength is enhanced by coating the surfaces of these substrates with plasma film produced from methane, ethylene, and acetylene, and that deterioration of the adhesive bonding part, when immersed in hot water of 70°C, is strongly dependent on the …

Phase 1 Inspection Report: National Dam Safety Program. Upper Mississippi - Kaskaskia - St. Louis Basin. Lake Bono Del Dam, Jefferson County, Missouri, Horner & Shifrin, Inc., St. Louis, Missouri
Missouri Dam Safety Inspection Reports
This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of the Lake Bono Del Dam (MO 30434):
It was prepared under the National Program of Inspection of Non-Federal Dams.
This dam has been classified as unsafe, non-emergency by the St. Louis District as a result of the application of the following criteria:
1) Spillway will not pass 50 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam.
2) Overtopping of the dam could result in failure of the dam.
3) Dam failure significantly increases the hazard to loss of life downstream.
A Model For Optimization Of The Archer's Compound Bow., Mark Aaron Kincy
A Model For Optimization Of The Archer's Compound Bow., Mark Aaron Kincy
Masters Theses
"The object of this work is to establish an analysis procedure to permit optimization of the design of ti1e compound bow. The distinguishing features of the compound bow are a system of cables and eccentric pulleys which change the leverage between the bow string and the bow limbs as the string is drawn. This approach concentrates on an accurate representation of the limb mechanics which will allow the design of eccentric wheels to improve the energy storage potential of the bow and thereby increases the velocity of an arrow cast by the bow.
The compound bow is a rather unique …
A Determination Of The Energy Storage Capacity Of The Diels-Alder Reaction Between Methylfuran And Maleic Anhydride As Applied To Storing Solar Energy, Brent Gregory Sparks
A Determination Of The Energy Storage Capacity Of The Diels-Alder Reaction Between Methylfuran And Maleic Anhydride As Applied To Storing Solar Energy, Brent Gregory Sparks
Masters Theses
“The heat storage capacity of the Diels-Alder reaction between 2-methylfuran and maleic anhydride is calculated using reaction parameters obtained from solution calorimetry. An equilibrium constant of .614 1/mol and a heat of reaction of 14.33 Kcal/mole were obtained from experiments at 45°C. A reaction ΔCp of -21.8 cal/mole was calculated from heat capacity information at 25°C. From these parameters, a solution initially seven molar in methylfuran and maleic anhydride was found to have a maximum apparent volumetric heat capacity of about 1.85 times that of water. This maximum occurs at about 335 K. Typical active solar energy schemes operate …
The Effect Of Air Turbulence On The Rate Of Frost Growth On A Horizontal Flat Plate, Dennis Wayne Schulte
The Effect Of Air Turbulence On The Rate Of Frost Growth On A Horizontal Flat Plate, Dennis Wayne Schulte
Masters Theses
“One factor currently affecting the efficient performance of finned refrigeration coils is frosting. This investigation determined the effect of air turbulence intensity on the growth rate of frost on a chilled flat plate in an effort to reduce the frosting problem.
Air turbulence intensities ranging from 1 to 22 percent were used with an air velocity of 590 fpm, and an air condition of 45°F and 0.0051 lb/lb humidity ratio, for the six hour tests. Additional tests at 7-8 percent air turbulence intensity were made for other air and velocity conditions.
The results showed that the effect of air turbulence …
Chemical Spray Pyrolysis Of Cadmium Telluride., Alok K. Berry
Chemical Spray Pyrolysis Of Cadmium Telluride., Alok K. Berry
Masters Theses
"Chemical spray pyrolysis is a technique for film growth which is of interest because of its potential for very large scale, inexpensive production of polycrystalline thin film semiconductor materials. Cadmium telluride shows promise as a base material for solar cell applications. Thin films of CdTe have been spray deposited on glass substrates from an aqueous solution containing CdC12, Teo2 and a reducing agent. The films show a zinc blende structure and appear to be intrinsic. Microprobe analysis indicate an excess of Cd, but this is not detectable by X-ray diffraction. The photo absorption studies indicate a direct …

Optimization Of An Investment Strategy For The Mcdonnell Douglas Salaried Savings Plan., Richard Charles Seifert
Masters Theses
"An automated technique is developed to maximize the return on investments in the McDonnell Douglas Salaried Savings Plan. Continual guidance is provided to the participant as to the currently preferred type of investment within the Plan, and to the strategic t iming of withdrawals from the Plan. The decision criteria within the modelled system address the tradeoff s which result from the participant's past investment decisions, his current tax situation, alternative market conditions, withdrawal penalties and o the r Plan characteristics. Decisions are made on the premise that historic performance patterns will continue, though adaptive procedures are included to react …

Model For Evaporation Of A Grain‐Boundary Phase, Manfred Wuttig, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The surface profile which develops in the vicinity of a grain boundary precipitate in the course of evaporation is calculated. It is shown that the presence of the grain boundary precipitate affects the profile significantly if the product of the width of the grain boundary precipitate and the ratio of the evaporation rates of the unperturbed surface and the grain boundary precipitate is larger than one. Effective Swarm Parameters And Transport Coefficients In Co2 Laser Mixtures, R. A. Sierra, H. L. Brooks, A. J. Sommerer, S. R. Foltyn, Kaare J. Nygaard
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A pulsed electron swarm technique has been used to obtain effective attachment and ionization cross-sections as well as electron drift velocities in mixtures of CO2 laser interest. In binary CO2:N 2 mixtures, below a reduced electric field of E/N=60*10 -17 V cm2, attachment was the principal ion production process. (N is the total gas number density.) The reduced attachment coefficients measured were small and in excellent agreement with numerical predictions. In ternary mixtures of He:CO2:N2, positive ion formation described by Townsend's first ionisation coefficient played a more important role over the same range of E/N. …

Current pathways and reconstructions of human injury after contact with distribution powerlines are not well understood. The impedance, currents, and modes of tissue destruction are rarely known. Eight anesthetized hogs, weighing 68 to 90 kg, were used in studies with potentials ranging from 2,100 to 14,400 volts. Electrical contact was made between the hindlimbs, from the hindlimb to forelimb, and over other regions of the body. Currents from 4 to 70 amperes rms and impedances ranging from 130 to 477 ohms were measured. Phase angles up to 40° were observed. Copyright © 1981 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics …

Performance Of Third Harmonic Ground Fault Protection Schemes For Generator Stator Windings, R. L. Schlake, G. W. Buckley, George Mcpherson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The paper shows how the normally generated third-harmonic voltage can be used to protect the lower ten to twenty percent of generator stator windings against ground faults. A method of determining the applicability of the scheme to a given machine is described which takes into account the design of the generator and its externally connected apparatus. The effects of finite resistence ground faults are also investigated and other advantages of the scheme, such as protection of the neutral, are also highlighted. Fast Transient Contingency Evaluation In Power Systems, Rodrigo S. Chamorro, Max Darwin Anderson, Earl F. Richards
Fast Transient Contingency Evaluation In Power Systems, Rodrigo S. Chamorro, Max Darwin Anderson, Earl F. Richards
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The problem of creating a practical computational tool to perform transient contingency analysis in a power system control center is considered. The computer program developed may be used in a control center computer where a state estimation program or a consistent set of load flow data is available. It can be run on a periodic basis over a previously specified contingency list, or it can be called by the system operator to analyze a particular contingency. The transient behavior of the system is evaluated based on a simulation technique widely acknowledged for its fast solutions. The method uses rapidly convergent …
