Use Only What You Need: Judicious Parallelism For File Transfers In High Performance Networks, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Parallelism is key to efficiently utilizing high-speed research networks when transferring large volumes of data. However, the monolithic design of existing transfer applications requires the same level of parallelism to be used for reading, write, and network operations for file transfers. This, in turn, overburdens system resources since setting the parallelism level for the slowest component results in unnecessarily high parallelism for other components. Using more than necessary parallelism led to increased overhead on system resources and unfair resource allocation among competing transfers. In this paper, we introduce modular file transfer architecture, Marlin, to separate I/O and network operations for …

Prediction Of Terephthalic Acid Yield In Aqueous Hydrolysis Of Polyethylene Terephthalate, Hossein Abedsoltan, Zeinab Zoghi, Amir H. Mohammadi
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Aqueous hydrolysis is used to chemically recycle polyethylene terephthalate (PET) due to production of high-quality terephthalic acid (TPA), the PET monomer. PET hydrolysis depends on various factors including PET size, catalyst concentration, and reaction temperature. So, modeling PET hydrolysis by considering the effective factors can provide useful information for material researchers to specify how to design and run these reactions. It will save time, energy, and materials by optimizing the hydrolysis conditions. Machine learning algorithms enable to design models to predict the output results. For the first time, 381 experimental data were gathered to model aqueous hydrolysis of PET. Effective …

Road intersections are made of asphalt pavement, a popular road surface material used worldwide. The pavement may suffer deformities and deterioration, resulting in higher maintenance expenses and an elevated likelihood of road accidents, due to factors such as heavy vehicles and environmental variables like temperature and rainfall. To tackle these obstacles, researchers have devised several machine-learning algorithms and optimization techniques. These tools aim to forecast and scrutinize pavement deformation, with the goal of refining pavement design and maintenance approaches, as well as obtaining a more comprehensive comprehension of the factors that impact pavement effectiveness. This paper shows that heavy vehicles …

Biocompatible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as potential nanocarriers for drug delivery applications owing to their tunable physiochemical properties. Specifically, Mg-MOF-74 with soluble metal centers has been shown to promote rapid pharmacokinetics for some drugs. In this work, we studied how the solubility of drug impacts the pharmacokinetic release rate and delivery efficiency by impregnating various amounts of ibuprofen, 5-fluorouracil, and curcumin onto Mg-MOF-74. The characterization of the drug-loaded samples via X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) confirmed the successful encapsulation of 30, 50, and 80 wt % of the three drugs within the MOF structure. …

Recent studies show that Generative Relevance Feedback (GRF), using text generated by Large Language Models (LLMs), can enhance the effectiveness of query expansion. However, LLMs can generate irrelevant information that harms retrieval effectiveness. To address this, we propose Generative Relevance Modeling (GRM) that uses Relevance-Aware Sample Estimation (RASE) for more accurate weighting of expansion terms. Specifically, we identify similar real documents for each generated document and use a neural re-ranker to estimate their relevance. Experiments on three standard document ranking benchmarks show that GRM improves MAP by 6-9% and R@1k by 2-4%, surpassing previous methods.

Tungsten oxide (WO3) typically owns the characteristics of electrochemical, photo-chromic, and gas-chromic. The seven-core fiber (SCF) generates a strong interference signal that comprises super-modes. The thermo-optic and thermo-expansion characteristics of SCF were utilized with an aid of Pt-WO3 film that makes the sensor highly sensitive to the H2 gas environment. The sensor with spiral micro grooves by femtosecond-laser ablation considerably enhanced the H2 sensitivity from 3.28 nm% to 4.0 nm%, and obtained a response and recovery time < 90 s.

Anderson Localization Of Electromagnetic Waves In Three Dimensions, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov, Tyler W. Hughes, Momchil Minkov, Zongfu Yu, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Anderson localization is a halt of diffusive wave propagation in disordered systems. Despite extensive studies over the past 40 years, Anderson localization of light in three dimensions has remained elusive, leading to the question of its very existence. Recent advances have enabled finite-difference time-domain calculations to be sped up by orders of magnitude, allowing us to conduct brute-force numerical simulations of light transport in fully disordered three-dimensional systems with unprecedented dimension and refractive index difference. We show numerically three-dimensional localization of vector electromagnetic waves in random aggregates of overlapping metallic spheres, in sharp contrast to the absence of localization for …

Lagrangian Displacement Field Estimators In Cosmology, Atsuhisa Ota, Hee Jong Seo, Shun Saito, Florian Beutler
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The late-time nonlinear Lagrangian displacement field is highly correlated with the initial field, so reconstructing it could enable us to extract primordial cosmological information. Our previous work [A. Ota et al., Phys. Rev. D 104, 123508 (2021)PRVDAQ2470-001010.1103/PhysRevD.104.123508] carefully studied the displacement field reconstructed from the late-time density field using the iterative method proposed by Schmittfull et al. [Phys. Rev. D 96, 023505 (2017)PRVDAQ2470-001010.1103/PhysRevD.96.023505] and found that it does not fully converge to the true, underlying displacement field (e.g., ∼8% offset at k∼0.2 h Mpc-1 at z=0.6). We also constructed the Lagrangian perturbation theory model for the reconstructed field, but the …

Magnetic induction has emerged as a viable method for regeneration of sorbents during separation processes. In this work, we investigated the efficacy of magnetic sorbents comprising iron oxide and zeolite 13X in ethylene/ethane separation via a magnetic induction process. The electromagnetic properties of the sorbents were tuned by varying the iron oxide (Fe2O3) particle size (30 nm, 100 nm, 5 μm) and iron oxide phase structure (FeO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4) at 20 wt % loading. The effects of these parameters on adsorption capacity, selectivity, and desorption rates were systematically …

Huawei, the telecommunications company based in the People's Republic of China (PRC), has presented the governments of several middle powers with a policy dilemma. On the one hand, Huawei's affordable 5G network technology is attractive to telecommunications operators in these countries, which do not have domestic producers of this equipment. On the other hand, the U.S. government and intelligence agencies in other countries maintain that Huawei gear presents intolerable network security risks, a charge that the PRC government and Huawei forcefully reject as they insist Huawei merits access to foreign markets. Facing the question of whether and how to allow …

Grafting non-polar polymer chains on the surface of polar nanoparticles (e.g., silica) is an effective way to enhance particle/matrix interactions and thus promote their homogeneous dispersion within a non-polar matrix, which leads to improved mechanical properties. Current grafting methods have not yet produced nanoparticles with well-defined polymers on the surface and high grafting density. Here, we employed anionic polymerization high vacuum techniques to synthesize ω-triethoxysilyl polystyrene (PS-TEOS) and PS-b-PI macromonomers followed by hydrolysis/condensation of macromonomers, leading to the in-situ formation of grafted (grafting through) silica nanoparticles with either PS or polystyrene-b-polyisoprene (PS-b-PI) chains. The molecular characteristics of the precursors PS-TEOS …

Uniqueness For An Inverse Quantum-Dirac Problem With Given Weyl Function, Martin Bohner, Ayça Çetinkaya
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, we consider a boundary value problem for a q-Dirac equation. We prove orthogonality of the eigenfunctions, realness of the eigenvalues, and we study asymptotic formulas of the eigenfunctions. We show that the eigenfunctions form a complete system, we obtain the expansion formula with respect to the eigenfunctions, and we derive Parseval's equality. We construct the Weyl solution and the Weyl function. We prove a uniqueness theorem for the solution of the inverse problem with respect to the Weyl function.

We Consider the One-Dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with an Attractive Delta Potential and Mass-Supercritical Nonlinearity. This Equation Admits a One-Parameter Family of Solitary Wave Solutions in Both the Focusing and Defocusing Cases. We Establish Asymptotic Stability for All Solitary Waves Satisfying a Suitable Spectral Condition, Namely, that the Linearized Operator Around the Solitary Wave Has a Two-Dimensional Generalized Kernel and No Other Eigenvalues or Resonances. in Particular, We Extend Our Previous Result [35] Beyond the Regime of Small Solitary Waves and Extend the Results of [19, 29] from Orbital to Asymptotic Stability for a Suitable Family of Solitary Waves.

Accurate crack detection and characterization on concrete are essential for the maintenance, safety, and serviceability of various infrastructures. In this paper, an innovative approach was developed to automatically measure the cracks from 3D point clouds collected by a phase-shift terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) (FARO Focus3D S120). The approach integrates several techniques to characterize the cracks, which include the deviation on point normal determined using k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and principal components analysis (PCA) algorithms to identify the cracks, and principal axes and curve skeletons of cracks to determine the projected and real dimensions of cracks, respectively. The coordinate transformation was then …
