A Theory Of Small Program Complexity, Kenneth I. Magel Jan 1982

A Theory Of Small Program Complexity, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Small programs are those which are written and understood by one. person. Large software systems usually consist of many small programs. The complexity of a small program is a prediction of how difficult it would be for someone to understand the program. This complexity depends of three factors: (1) the size and interelationships of the program itself; (2) the size and interelationships of the internal model of the program's purpose held by the person trying to understand the program; and (3) the complexity of the mapping between the model and the program. A theory of small program complexity based on …

Stochastic Modeling Of Individual Resource Consumption During The Programming Phase Of Software Development, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth Magel Jan 1982

Stochastic Modeling Of Individual Resource Consumption During The Programming Phase Of Software Development, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth Magel

Computer Science Technical Reports

In the past several years there has been a considerable amount of research effort devoted to developing models of individual resource consumption during the software development process. Since many conditions affect individual resource consumption during the software development process, including several which are difficult if not impossible to quantify, it is our contention that a stochastic model is more appropriate than a deterministic model.

In order to test our hypothesis we conducted an experiment based upon several student programming assignments. Data from this experiment is used to demonstrate that the two parameter Log-Normal distribution is appropriate for describing the probabilistic …

Aerodynamics Of Closely Coupled Wings For Varying Chords And Airfoil Planforms, Gary D. Vincent Jan 1982

Aerodynamics Of Closely Coupled Wings For Varying Chords And Airfoil Planforms, Gary D. Vincent

Masters Theses

"Aerodynamic characteristics of a dual wing aircraft were analyzed with variations in airfoil sections and chord ratios over existing equal chard ratio dual wing and monoplane aircraft designs. Two- and three-dimensional aerodynamic studies were conducted to find the wing geometry which would create the minimum cruise drag. The two-dimensional aerodynamic data was obtained from a multi-element inviscid vortex panel program coupled to a momentum integral boundary layer program to account for the aerodynamic coupling between the wings. With this data, a three-dimensional vortex lattice program calculated the three-dimensional aerodynamic data. compared to an equal chard ratio dual wing aircraft, lower …

The Influence Of Manganese Oxide On Sintering Of A Commercial Natural Magnesite., Alamar Kasan Duarte

Masters Theses

"Sintering studies on a commercial natural magnesite have been done to investigate the influence of MnO doping (MnO concentration from 0.16 to 2.50 wt.%) on the densification process over the temperature range 1520 to 1760°C , over periods of time from 3,600 to 57,600s in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres (Air and PO2 = 10-7 KPa. In an air atmosphere the additions of MnO enhances the densification process. This fact may be associated with an increase in lattice diffusion of Mg ions due to an increase in cation vacancies in the MgO lattice from the presence of …

Radiometric And Petrochemical Characteristics Of The Dells Granite, Yavapai County, Arizona, Kenneth Stewart Fleck

Masters Theses

"The Dells granite of central Arizona, an alkaline granite containing accessory fluorite and tourmaline, contains anomalously high amounts of uranium. Gamma-ray spectrometry, x-ray fluorescence, petrographic, and autoradiographic methods were used to determine the contents and distribution of equivalent U, Th, K, and ten major element oxides within the granite pluton. The range of uranium content is 0 to 39.7 parts per million (ppm) with the mean equivalent U content 8.8 ppm; eTh, 26.8 ppm; and K, 4.8%. The average uranium content is about twice the average of western United States granites, the thorium content slightly less than average. The Th/U …

A Study Of The Critical Cluster Size For Water Monolayer Clusters On A Model Agi Basal Substrate, Richard C. Ward, Barbara N. Hale, Sergio Terrazas

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a formalism and estimate a critical cluster size for water monolayer formation on a (rigid) model AgI basal substrate. The formalism is modified from that developed for vapor clusters [B. N. Hale and R. C. Ward, J. Stat. Phys. 28, 487 (1982)] and uses a Metropolis Monte Carlo method developed by Squire and Hoover [J. Chem. Phys. 50, 701 (1969)] to determine (Helmholtz) free energy differences for clusters containing n and n-1 molecules. Calculations for clusters of n=1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 24 water molecules on a model AgI basal face at 265 K are …

Glass Surfaces Then And Now, Norbert J. Kreidl

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A reservoir of efficient instrumentation capable of detailed and quantitative exploration of glass surface features is now available in the face of the recognition of their crucial importance for both surface and bulk properties as well as performance. Yet it may be instructive to glance at what had been learned about glass surfaces by investigators before the advent of these intricate tools. Among such earlier findings are the recognition of the altered composition and structure of the surface layer, the extension of this disturbance to considerable depth, the effect of surface structure on adsorption, adhesion, wetting, finishing, etc. and on …

An Analytical Method For Quantifying The Electrical Space Heating Component Of A Cold Load Pick Up, Walter W. Lang, Max Darwin Anderson, David R. Fannin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

After an extended cold weather outage on a distribution circuit supplying a high saturation of electrical space heating, large transient overcurrent's persist for several hours because of the undiversified heating load. In this paper, the electrical space heating component of enduring demand is characterized by a smooth curve. Expressions are derived for the parameters of the curve in terms of the outage conditions and a statistical description of the residences. A method is suggested for using this characterization to determine the effects of a cold load pick up on the distribution circuit components. Copyright © 1982 by The Institute of …

Inversion To Obtain Aerosol Size Distributions From Measurements With A Differential Mobility Analyzer, Darryl J. Alofs, P. Balakumar

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To Measure Size Distributions of Sub micrometer Aerosols with an Electrical Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) Requires an Inversion Procedure. the Knutson (1976) and the Hoppel (1978) Inversion Procedures Were Numerically Investigated for the Case of Log-Normal Aerosol Size Distributions. It Was Found that the Hoppel Procedure Converges to the Same Result as that Given by the Knutson Procedure. the Computational Range for Geometric Mean Diameter (Χg) Was 0.025-0.25 Μm, and for Geometric Standard Deviation (Σg) Was 1.1-2.4. the Inversion Error Was Found to Be Greater Than 10% in Certain "Forbidden Zones" of Χg and Σ …

Hypothesis Recognition Failure In Conjunctive And Disjunctive Concept-Identification Tasks, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Jan 1982

Hypothesis Recognition Failure In Conjunctive And Disjunctive Concept-Identification Tasks, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

While solving either a conjunctive or a disjunctive concept-identification problem, college students were asked to recognize hypothesis, stimulus, and feedback information from the immediately preceding trial. After this phase of the experiment, subjects were asked to estimate feature frequencies of occurrence and to classify old and new instances of the concept. Recognition performance was best for feedback and worst for stimulus information. Contrary to hypothesis theory, hypotheses were correctly recognized 65% of the time overall. Instances presented twice, once, and never before were classified equally well, a finding that argues against specific-instance theory. Finally, frequency estimates increased as a function …

D- Production By Charge Transfer Of (0.3 - 3)-Kev D+ In Thick Alkaline-Earth Vapor Targets: Interaction Energies For Cah+, Cah, And Cah-, R. (Robert) H. Mcfarland, A. S. Schlachter, J. W. Stearns, B. Liu, R. (Ronald) E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Equilibrium charge-state fractions of energetic deuterium ions and atoms emerging from alkaline-earth (magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium) vapor targets are reported in the range of 0.3- to 3-keV incident D+ energy. Deuterium negative-ion production in thick barium and calcium vapor targets equals similar production in cesium vapor (34%). Moreover, the maximum D- production in strontium vapor exceeds that for all other known gas or vapor targets and reaches 50% at 500 eV. Theory does not quantitatively describe these results, although ab initio molecular-interaction-energy calculations on the neutral and negative-ion CaH systems lead to the prediction of large D- yields at …
