Monte Carlo Studies Of Water Monolayer Clusters On Substrates: Hexagonal Agi, Richard C. Ward, Jon M. Holdman, Barbara N. Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Monte Carlo procedure is used to study the stability and structure of small water clusters adsorbed on model basal and prism faces of hexagonal AgI. Effective pair potentials for the H2O-AgI interaction [B. N. Hale and J. Kiefer, J. Chem. Phys. 73, 923 (1980)] and the revised central force potentials for the H2O-H2O interaction [F. H. Stillinger and A. Rahman, J. Chem. Phys. 68, 666 (1978)] are used to determine average internal cluster binding energy and average cluster-substrate binding energy for water clusters containing 6, 24, and 44 water molecules at temperatures 240, …

An Exploratory Study On The Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Wall Studs, Yaochun Zhang, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

GENERAL Cold-formed steel wall studs are widely used in the U. S. and Canada. The 1980 A.I.S.I Specification (Ref. 1) contains provisions for the design of such wall studs based primarily on the research conducted at Cornell University (Refs. 2 and 3). This research involved theoretical and experimental studies on wall studs subjected axial loads only. The Specification provisions on the case of combined axial and lateral loading were derived intuitively and were made intentionally conservative. The excessive conservatism in the provisions for the combined loading case prevents using wall studs as economically as possible. The primary objective of the …

Binary Collision Dynamics And Numerical Evaluation Of Dilute Gas Transport Properties For Potentials With Multiple Extrema, James C. Rainwater, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jul 1982

Binary Collision Dynamics And Numerical Evaluation Of Dilute Gas Transport Properties For Potentials With Multiple Extrema, James C. Rainwater, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Prediction of gaseous transport properties requires calculation of Chapman-Enskog collision integrals which depend on all possible binary collision trajectories. The interparticle potential is required as input, and for a variety of applications involving monatomic gases the Hulburt-Hirschfelder potential is useful since it is determined entirely from spectroscopic information and can accomodate the long-range maxima and minima found in many systems. Hulburt-Hirschfelder potentials are classified into five distinct types according to their qualitative binary collision dynamics, which in general can be quite complex and can exhibit “double orbiting”, i.e., a pair of orbiting impact parameters for a single energy of collision. …

The Subjective Nature Of Programming Complexity, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth I. Magel Mar 1982

The Subjective Nature Of Programming Complexity, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the more difficult problems confronting software engineers today is the construction of accurate predictive models of the software development process, [21,[8] and [93. It has long been recognized that one of the most essential elements of any successful model of this process is a quantification of the complexity of software systems. During the past several years a great deal of work has been performed by researchers such as Halstead [3], McCab [5], and others in an attempt to develop metrics which adequately capture the complexity of software systems. Yet one very important aspect of software development complexity seems …

Factors Influencing The Production Rate And Quality Of Lead Sinter, John R. Knoepke, Hung Yang Tsai, Arthur E. Morris Mar 1982

Factors Influencing The Production Rate And Quality Of Lead Sinter, John R. Knoepke, Hung Yang Tsai, Arthur E. Morris

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The sintering characteristics of a typical Missouri lead concentrate were determined for two types of raw sinter mix: conventionally prepared and pelletized. The important sintering characteristics are sulfur elimination, sinter strength, production rate of sinter, permeability of the sinter bed, and bed temperature. These characteristics were analyzed statistically, and are described by an empirical model, in which proportion of returns, moisture content, air flow, bed height, size distribution of returns, and ignition time are the independent variables. The characteristics of a conventionally prepared sinter mix are most strongly affected by the moisture content of the raw mix. The characteristics of …

When Can We Introspect Accurately About Mental Processes?, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Mar 1982

When Can We Introspect Accurately About Mental Processes?, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Some theorists have suggested that the cognitive processes determining a person's performance in a given task are unconscious, making introspection a poor research tool for studying these processes. Others have argued that the relevant processes usually are consciously controlled and can be detailed by asking the person to introspect. Here, a synthesis of these two positions, a dual-factor approach, is proposed. Some of the processes involved in achieving a cognitive goal, such as learning a new concept, are viewed as unconscious and automatic; however, other processes are intentionally allocated conscious attention, in certain tasks, to accomplish other goal. To illustrate …

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Y(Al₁₋ₓfeₓ)₁₂, Ying-Chang Yang, Gary J. Long, William Joseph James, R. Yeh Mar 1982

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Y(Al₁₋ₓfeₓ)₁₂, Ying-Chang Yang, Gary J. Long, William Joseph James, R. Yeh

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to investigate the magnetic behavior of 3d atoms in the ThMn12‐type structure, the structured and magnetic properties of Y(Al1-xFex)12 were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The Y(Al1-xFex)12 intermetallic compounds crystallize in the ThMn12‐type structure for x in the range of 0.3-0.5. The results can be explained on the basis of the preferential atomic ordering observed in the ternary compounds. The compounds are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures of 130, 170, and 280 K, respectively, for x values of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5.

Seismic Design For Buildings, Department Of The Army, The Navy, And The Air Force Feb 1982

Seismic Design For Buildings, Department Of The Army, The Navy, And The Air Force

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

This updated manual with revised seismic design provisions governs the design and construction of Army, Navy, and Air Force facilities and supersedes the April 1973 issue. Basic criteria are stated herein with augmentations and clarifications of the criteria. Also, commentary and design examples are included to provide comprehensive applications and guidelines for the seismic-resistant design of facilities. The organization of the manual has been revised to present the topics in a more orderly manner. The dynamic analysis approach for seismic design is not covered but its use is not precluded in this manual.

The basic criteria cited are the "Recommended …
