Generalized Homogeneity Of Finite And Of Countable Topological Spaces, J. J. Charatonik, W. J. Charatonik

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finite and countable topological spaces are investigated which are homogeneous, homogeneous with respect to open mappings or with respect to continuous ones. It is shown that for finite spaces all three concepts of homogeneity coincide, while for countable or for uncountable ones they are distinct. Some characterization of countable spaces that are homogeneous in either sense are found for the metric setting.

Composite Graph Coloring Algorithms And Applications, Stephen Hong Seng Yek Jan 1988

Composite Graph Coloring Algorithms And Applications, Stephen Hong Seng Yek

Masters Theses

"A vertex-composite graph is a graph that can have unequal chromaticities on its vertices. Vertex-composite graph coloring or composite graph coloring involves coloring each vertex of a composite graph with consecutive colors according to the vertex's chromaticity with no two vertices adjacent to one another having the same color(s).

New heuristic algorithms including the use of the saturation degree method have been developed in this research. All eleven heuristic algorithms including Clementson and Elphick algorithms were then tested using random composite graphs with five different chromaticity distributions. The best algorithm which uses the least average colors from the experiment is …

Characteristics And Optimal Design Of Variable Airgap Linear Force Motors, Ming-Chuan Leu, E. V. Scorza, D. L. Bartel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical model for predicting the characteristics of variable airgap linear force motors is developed. the model takes into account magnetic losses including the leakage and fringing effects and the reluctance existing at the contacts between permanent magnets and pole pieces. the model is validated by comparing its predicted characteristics with the results obtained from experiments and a finite element program. with the use of the modelled characteristics, computer programs based on the method of constrained steepest descent with state equations are developed for automating and optimising the design of linear force motors. Numerical studies are made for both minimisation …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microcomputer simulation provides a powerful tool for computer-aided design and analysis of communication systems and requires a minimum of investment. Two different simulation examples are presented: a fixed topology simulation program for digital data links written in Pascal; and a simulation of an analog link using Fortran. These examples are followed by a consideration of the new 32-bit single-board computers and their potential impact on microcomputer simulation. © 1988 IEEE

Packaging Engineering Education Qualitative Need Assessment, M. Douglas Sachs Jan 1988

Packaging Engineering Education Qualitative Need Assessment, M. Douglas Sachs

Masters Theses

"Packaging engineering is an interdisciplinary field which has no formal degree program to support it. While there arc packaging engineers in industry, there are no packaging engineering degrees presently being offered by our nation's colleges and universities. In order to lay a foundation upon which a degree program could be based, this thesis has investigated the needs of packaging engineering education by seeking the input of the packaging industry. This qualitative comparison has been quantified, resulting in a list of prioritized classes and topics upon which a degree program could be based"--Abstract, page ii.

Micro Database Management System Language, Karen Yingling Tam Jan 1988

Micro Database Management System Language, Karen Yingling Tam

Masters Theses

"There are two approaches to solve computational problems in a microcomputer environment:

  1. Non-database approach: uses a high level programming language with non-database files as input and/or output files.
  2. Database approach: uses the programming language embedded in the micro Data Base Management System(DBMS), with the database defined by the integrated database definition language as input and/or output files.

Adopting the appropriate approach in any single application may save cost and time. This paper compares the two different approaches while solving the same Control Section (CSECT) Interaction Hierarchy problem and suggests which to use when"--Abstract, page ii.

Analysis Of Interrelationships Between Photovoltaic Power And Battery Storage For Electric Utility Load Management, Badrul H. Chowdhury, S. Rahman Jan 1988

Analysis Of Interrelationships Between Photovoltaic Power And Battery Storage For Electric Utility Load Management, Badrul H. Chowdhury, S. Rahman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The impact of photovoltaic power generation on an electric utility's load shape under supply-side peak load management conditions is explored. Results show that some utilities utilizing battery storage for peak load shaving might benefit from use of photovoltaic (PV) power, the extent of its usefulness being dependent on the specific load shapes as well as the photovoltaic array orientations. Typical utility load shapes both in the eastern (at Rayleigh, NC) and in the western (at Hesperia, CA) parts of the USA are examined for this purpose. It is concluded that while photovoltaic power generation seems to present a bigger impact …

Three-Position Function Generation Of Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms With Equal Deviation Transmission Angle Control, Clark R. Barker, Gwo Huey Shu Jan 1988

Three-Position Function Generation Of Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms With Equal Deviation Transmission Angle Control, Clark R. Barker, Gwo Huey Shu

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In an earlier work, it has been shown that all of the potential solutions to a given problem may be represented in an αβ-plane which can be subdivided into mechanism types. Further, the regions in the αβ-plane may represent two possible forms of assembly plus a change of form class which are not valid solutions. In this paper, we provide a third-order polynomial which defines the locus in the αbeta-plane of solutions which have equal deviation of their transmission angle from the ideal of 90° throughout the entire range of motion. When these solutions are mapped into a Cartesian plane, …

Argon Metastable-Cadmium Dihalide Energy Transfer Collisions In A Flowing Afterglow, Christopher L. Bohler, Laird D. Schearer Jan 1988

Argon Metastable-Cadmium Dihalide Energy Transfer Collisions In A Flowing Afterglow, Christopher L. Bohler, Laird D. Schearer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The energy dependence of dissociating collisions between argon metastable atoms and cadmium dihalide molecules have been studied in a flowing afterglow apparatus. The fluorescence spectra obtained in the range of 3000-7600 Å which result from the Ar(3P2) + CdX2 interactions indicate a dominant dissociative excitation production mechanism. The emission spectra are used to narrow the uncertainty in the currently accepted values for the dissociation energy of the CdX2 molecules. The Wigner spin rule (conservation of total electronic spin) was verified for these processes as shown by the dominance of final state triplet production as compared to the virtual absence of …

Effect Of Excess Pbo On The Sintering Characteristics And Dielectric Properties Of Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3–Pbtio3‐Based Ceramics, Jyoti P. Guha, Dyllan J. Hong, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Additions of excess PbO to the perovskite Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.92Ti0.08]O3 solid solution enhanced the formation of a liquid phase at 840°C, which served as a densification aid for the ceramics. The liquid phase allowed elimination of pores and promoted grain growth during sintering. With additions of 1 to 2 wt% excess PbO, densities in excess of 97% of theoretical were obtained at a sintering temperature of 950°C. The peak dielectric constants of the resulting ceramics were over 18 000 at 30°C and dissipation factors less than 1%. Additions of PbO in excess of …

Fractals With Arbitrary Segment Lengths, Daniel Michael Doerer Jan 1988

Fractals With Arbitrary Segment Lengths, Daniel Michael Doerer

Masters Theses

"Work in the area of fractal geometry has generally focused on a specific facet of the discipline at the expense of other interesting features. This approach often generates more questions than answers for the general audience due to the lack of unification across all views. It appears that a common thread to relate all aspects of fractal characteristics is missing. This paper addresses this question and presents some new and fascinating results. For example, in-depth mathematical analysis often defers to the intriguing and attractive graphical displays produced by mapping the complex plane to the pixel field on a CRT. Both …

Effects Of 0.5 Weight Percent Boron On Cobalt Aluminide, Kevin Thomas Slattery Jan 1988

Effects Of 0.5 Weight Percent Boron On Cobalt Aluminide, Kevin Thomas Slattery

Masters Theses

"A study was made on the effects of adding 0.5 weight percent boron to the ordered intermetallic Cobalt Aluninide. Thirty gram (30g) specimens were induction melted in an pure argon atmosphere and cast into a copper alloy bar mold. The addition of boron raised the modulus of rupture from 30.1 to 44.3 ksi; increased the Knoop microhardness from 543 to 693; reduced the average grain size from 190 to 70 microns; and gave a more equiaxed grain structure. X-ray diffraction detected the presence of a second phase, AlB , 12 in the material containing boron. Scanning electron micro-scopy revealed that …

Paraffin Deposition Property Measurement Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Kevin Lynn Thornsberry Jan 1988

Paraffin Deposition Property Measurement Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Kevin Lynn Thornsberry

Masters Theses

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) has been used in past studies to identify the cloud points of diesel fuels, lube oils, jet fuels etc. and it has been assumed that its application extends to all paraffinic hydrocarbons. To verify this and to investigate the possible application of Differential Scanning Calorimetry to the production phase of the petroleum industry, the onset of wax crystallization is compared with ASTM cloud point for a number of paraffinic mixtures including a variety of crude oils. Results show cloud point can be determined for crudes using DSC. Additionally, wax content can be found on a known …

Thermal, Mechanical And Interfacial Characterization Of A Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Composite, Theodore J. Williams Jan 1988

Thermal, Mechanical And Interfacial Characterization Of A Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Composite, Theodore J. Williams

Masters Theses

The effects of a glass fiber reinforcer on the properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) were evaluated. A silane coupling agent (M8550 Petrarch Systems, Inc.) was employed to promote adhesion between the materials. FTIR analysis, ESCA/Auger and SEM techniques were used to characterize the silane coating.

The mechanical properties, such as bending strength, improved with an increase in the volume percent of fiber. The addition of the M8550 silane directly into the monomer solution showed the most improvement, 23 percent increase, when compared to the uncoated glass fiber. The glass transition temperature as measured by DSC and the heat distortion temperature (HDT) …

Optimizing Transformer Impedance For Short Circuit Analysis, Louis Scott Becker Jan 1988

Optimizing Transformer Impedance For Short Circuit Analysis, Louis Scott Becker

Masters Theses

"Transformer impedances change when the tap positions on the primary or secondary are changed. Models were designed that gave the maximum impedance variation for a large percentage of transformers studied. These models were used to study how fault currents deviated from the predicted values if the actual transformer impedance was not the same as the predicted impedance. The effects of the change in turns ratio was also taken into account, and the base voltages were chosen to be different from the transformer voltages to include this possible error.

Faults were placed on the secondary of a model radial power system, …

Intensity Blending Of Computer Image Generation-Based Displays, Elizabeth Scheppler Reidelberger Jan 1988

Intensity Blending Of Computer Image Generation-Based Displays, Elizabeth Scheppler Reidelberger

Masters Theses

"State-of-the-art combat simulators require a 360 degree field of view, allowing the pilot and radar intercept officer to have the same visibility in the simulator that they would experience in the aircraft. The sky/earth display must be computer - generated and displayed with a minimum of two channels to provide the most realistic display possible. The two channels of display come together in the dome, forming an equator, that must be as indiscernible to the aircrew as possible. To accomplish this, an algorithm has been developed for controlling the video output which makes the two separate channel displays appear as …

Behavior Of Reinforced Loess Specimens Under Triaxial Load, Mohammad Taghi Izadi Jan 1988

Behavior Of Reinforced Loess Specimens Under Triaxial Load, Mohammad Taghi Izadi

Masters Theses

"Effects of reinforcement on shear strength of a loessial (silty) soil arc studied. Unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests are performed on unreinforced and fabric reinforced soil specimens. Analyses of the test results showed that in general the shear strength of remolded loess specimens were improved substantially and increase in the shear strength was directly related to reinforcement spacing.

The mechanism of soil-reinforcement interaction and several existing analytical models are described. A modified analytical model based on enhanced confining theory is developed. This model can be used in assessing the effects of the reinforcement on shear strength of triaxial specimens. Comparison of …

The effects of the addition of phosphate chemicals to Al2O3, Al2O3-CaO, and Al2O3-SiO2 systems have been studied concentrating on selected dry and fired properties. The various refractories evaluated were formulated from all alumina aggregate systems based on 1) a mix of tabular and calcined fine aluminas, 2) a combination of calcium aluminate cement bonded-tabular and calcined fine aluminas, and 3) an alumina aggregate-silica fume mixture. Specimens were vibration-cast, dried at 110°C and fired at 1450°C. It was found that each system has different property responses to different …

Sessile Drop Studies Of Aluminum On Sapphire, Ke Wen K. Li Jan 1988

Sessile Drop Studies Of Aluminum On Sapphire, Ke Wen K. Li

Masters Theses

A sessile drop technique employing a drop placement method has been used to investigate the wetting behavior and interfacial phenomena between aluminum and single crystal α-alumina. Measurements were made under a flowing mixture of H2 and He atomsphere from 1200°C to 1600°C. Acute contact angles decreased continuously in all cases during the 8-hour experimental time. Neither the oxygen partial pressure of the flowing gas nor the orientation of the single crystal alumina substrate affected the contact angles, but the shapes of crystals grown at the substrate-metal interfaces were dependent on the orientation of the substrate surface to some extent. …

An Experimental Study Of Adsorption And Variable Temperature Desorption Of Ethanol-Water, Propane-Propylene And Hydrogen Sulfide-Carbon Dioxide-Propane, Suvit Kulvaranon Jan 1988

An Experimental Study Of Adsorption And Variable Temperature Desorption Of Ethanol-Water, Propane-Propylene And Hydrogen Sulfide-Carbon Dioxide-Propane, Suvit Kulvaranon

Masters Theses

"An ideal adsorption only removes the desired components. Many times one or more other components are also adsorbed. If two or more components are adsorbed, an adsorption separation may not be satisfactory or may require additional separation procedures, even though one is highly preferentially adsorbed. In such cases it may be possible to get additional separation during the desorption stage by using variable temperature desorption.

To study such problems, two experimental apparatus were set up, one for adsorption for ethanol and water mixtures on activated carbon and silicalite, the other for propane-propylene mixtures, and hydrogen sulfide-carbon dioxide-propane mixtures both on …
