Some Issues Of Thermodynamic Consistency In Binary Nucleation Theory, Gerald Wilemski
Some Issues Of Thermodynamic Consistency In Binary Nucleation Theory, Gerald Wilemski
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The "generalized" Kelvin equations used to determine the critical nucleus composition in some binary nucleation theories are shown to be thermodynamically inconsistent. Also, the surface tension calculated by the method of Flageollet-Daniel, Gamier, and Mirabel [J. Chem. Phys. 78, 2600 (1983)] is shown to be thermodynamically consistent with respect to the dynamic surface tension, contrary to the recent assertion of Spiegel, Zahoransky, and Wittig.

Perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy has been used to characterize several structural aspects of a high-temperature, ionic conducting ceramic, CaZr3.95Hf0.05P6O24. Hafnium was introduced into the material to provide the PAC probe nuclei, 181Hf/181Ta, which were located primarily at Zr sites. PAC measurements were made over a range of temperatures from 77 to 1180 K, and they have been analyzed and interpreted using several simple models. The distorted octahedral crystal field at the Zr site produced a (low-frequency) static electric quadrupole interaction which can be accurately described by the point-charge model. But, the temperature dependence of the associated electric field gradient …

Deduction Of A Functional Dependency From A Set Of Functional Dependencies, James M. Richardson, Daniel C. St. Clair
Deduction Of A Functional Dependency From A Set Of Functional Dependencies, James M. Richardson, Daniel C. St. Clair
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper describes an algorithm called the Deduction Tracing Algorithm (DTA) which utilizes basic properties of functional dependencies from database systems and a modification of a tree search algorithm from artificial intelligence. The algorithm takes a set of functional dependencies, F, along with a specific functional dependency L → R as input and produces a list of functional dependencies from F that can be used to deduce L → R. The resulting algorithm is easily automated to provide relational database users with a tool for organizing their queries.

State-of-the-art combat simulators require a 360 degree field of view, allowing the pilot and radar intercept officer to have the same visibility in the simulator that they would experience in the aircraft. The sky/earth display must be computer - generated and displayed with a minimum of two channels to provide the most realistic display possible. The two channels of display come together in the dome, forming an equator, that must be as indiscernible to the aircrew as possible. To accomplish this, an algorithm has been developed for controlling the video output which makes the two separate channel displays appear as …
The Role Of Dephasing In Some Recent Theories Of Quantum Localization, Paul Ernest Parris, Philip W. Phillips
The Role Of Dephasing In Some Recent Theories Of Quantum Localization, Paul Ernest Parris, Philip W. Phillips
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider the transport of electrons or excitons through a random environment in the presence of constant site off-diagonal dephasing processes. It is shown that dephasing of this form will always defeat Anderson localization at long times. Some recent theories of quantum localization which depend upon such dephasing processes are, therefore, seen to be inconsistent.

Theoretical Considerations Concerning The Separation Of Enantiomeric Solutes By Liquid Chromatography, Richard E. Boehm, Daniel E. Martire, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
A statistical thermodynamic theory of chiral solute retention and separation using chiral stationary phase high-performance liquid chromatography (CSP-HPLC) is formulated and applied in the limit of infinite dilution of solute to models of chemically bonded CSPs consisting of either chiral tetrahedral moieties or chiral molecular cavities intended to simulate a cyclodextrin CSP. Explicit expressions are derived for the corresponding separation factors and the likelihood of enantiomeric separation is investigated as a function of the multitude of possible interactions and retention modes for the enantiomers and CSPs considered. The separation factor reduces to a simple Boltzmann factor whenever a dominant retention …

The moderator will first focus on the question: "Are enrollments actually declining in computer science programs across this country?" He will report the results of his surveys which indicate there has been a definite downturn in enrollment over the past two years. The panelists will then discuss what is being done at their schools to recruit students and to meet this new challenge of declining enrollments.

In the design of steel buildings, the "Allowable Stress Criteria" have long been used for the design of cold-formed steel structural members in the United States and other countries.' In view of the fact that the mathematical theory of probability, which has been so successfully applied in other fields of engineering, would seem to be equally applicable to cold-formed steel design by providing a more uniform degree of structural safety, the "Limit State Design" method based on the probabilistic concept has been used in Canada and Europe for the design of cold-formed steel structural members.' In the United States, a …

Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Steel Comparative Study Of Design Methods For Cold-Formed Steel, Ling-En Hsiao, Wei-Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
Allowable Stress Design is the current method used to design cold-formed steel structural members and connections. In this design approach, factors of safety are used to compute the allowable design stresses which are compared to the actual maximum stresses that will occur in the member during the life of the structure. In recent years, the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method has been developed for the design of hot-rolled steel shapes and the design of cold-formed steel structural members. This method is based on probabilistic and statistical techniques to account for the many uncertainties involved with the actual design. …

Effects Of Transport Coherence On The Mutual Annihilation Of Excitons, Demet Gulen, Vasudev M. Kenkre, Robert S. Knox, Paul Ernest Parris

We report results of a theoretical investigation into the mutual annihilation of tight-binding excitons. The results are in apparent contradiction with intuitive expectations and provide corrections to expressions given by one of the present authors (V.M.K.) in an earlier analysis. A part of that analysis was based on a mapping of the dynamics of two mobile, mutually annihilating excitons onto the dynamics of a single exciton migrating in the presence of a fixed trap. We find that while this equivalence is valid for incoherent, randomly walking particles in an ordered system, it does not hold for an arbitrary degree of …
An Inherently Parallel Large Grained Data Flow Environment, Roger E. Eggen, John R. Metzner
An Inherently Parallel Large Grained Data Flow Environment, Roger E. Eggen, John R. Metzner
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
A parallel programming environment based on data flow is described. Programming in the environment involves use with an interactive graphic editor which facilitates the construction of a program graph consisting of modules, ports, paths and triggers. Parallelism is inherent since data presence allows many modules to execute concurrently. The graph is executed directly without transformation to traditional representations. The environment supports programming at a very high level as opposed to parallelism at the individual instruction level.

We have measured the concentrations of S, Se, and Te in samples of 1986 snow and compared our results with those of earlier measurements. We were unable to find any earlier reports on Te in snow, but values of the Se/S concentration ratio in 1986 are about a factor of 6 lower than that in snow and glacial ice of 800 B.C. Measurements on intermediate samples demonstrate that most of the decline in the Se/S ratio occurred during the past 200 years, i.e., since the start of the Industrial Revolution. This temporal change in values of the Se/S ratio probably …
