Seismic Zonation Of India, L. S. Srivastava, S. Basu Mar 1991

Seismic Zonation Of India, L. S. Srivastava, S. Basu

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The Himalayan belt, Indo-Gangetic Plains and Peninsular shield divide India in three major regions with decreasing seismic potential. The Indian Standard Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures (IS: 1893-19841) incorporate a seismic zoning map (SZM) demarcating five seismic zones, which show zones with many islands, and prescribed design parameters for the delineated zones do not show consistent exceedance probability. A probabilistic analysis has been carried out and seismic design ground motion parameters have been estimated for 100 years’ service life, which do not support delineation of five zones with uniform ratio of seismic hazard among various zones. Four seismic …

A Numerical Solution Of Wave Equation For Dynamic Compaction Of Soil, K. B. Agarwal, B. Siva Ram Mar 1991

A Numerical Solution Of Wave Equation For Dynamic Compaction Of Soil, K. B. Agarwal, B. Siva Ram

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

It is a known fact that any disturbance at the ground surface, like the one created by vibratory, compactors or by application of blast pressure on detonation of a foamed propellant, is transmitted into ground until it is weak enough to travel deeper and farther. The ground acceleration at various points, induces compaction. The transmission of vibrations due to such surface dynamic loads are governed by the equation of motion based on Newton's second law. The equation of motion is presented in Euiler's Coordinates using tensor notation and is solved for surface displacements due to surface dynamic loads. These loads …

Analysis Of Damping In Soil As Applied To Machine Foundations, B. M. Basavanna, M. S. Nagakumar Mar 1991

Analysis Of Damping In Soil As Applied To Machine Foundations, B. M. Basavanna, M. S. Nagakumar

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The parameters needed for the design of machine foundations are usually evaluated from the model block resonance test conducted at a given site. Sometimes it may not be possible to attain complete resonance and the test results may be limited to the ascending part of the response. In this paper the possible effect of damping on the values of the design parameters evaluated from the ascending part of response is examined and the nature of damping which gives realistic values of design parameters is presented.

Source, Path And Site Effects On Loma Prieta Strong Motions, P. G. Somerville, N. F. Smith Mar 1991

Source, Path And Site Effects On Loma Prieta Strong Motions, P. G. Somerville, N. F. Smith

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The amplitudes of strong ground motions from the Loma Prieta earthquake recorded in the San Francisco and Oakland areas exceeded the levels predicted by standard empirical attenuation relations. Preliminary analysis of accelerograms having known trigger times suggests that the elevation of ground motion amplitudes in the distance range of approximately 40 to 100 km was due to critical reflections from the base of the crust. These reflections were large and occurred at relatively close range because of the deep focal depth of the earthquake and the strong velocity gradient at the base of the crust, and were enhanced by rupture …

System Identification And Seismic Performance Evaluation Of Earth Dams, H. S. Sayed, A. M. Abdel-Ghaffar, S. F. Masri

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A system identification technique is developed to provide dynamic properties of earth dams from their seismic records. The technique is utilized to assess the capabilities and limitation of analytical models in terms of dynamic nonlinear constitutive relationships as well as damping. The technique is based on the least square method using Gaussian hypothesis. Earth dams are modeled as a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous visco-elasto-plastic soil structure. The forward problem is solved using a Galerkin-Ritz formulation in which the solution is expanded using basis function, which is selected to be the eigenmodes. The spatial variation of the excitation is considered by using global …

A Cyclic Triaxial Facility For Loading A Silty Clay, Matthew Raybould

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A digital control servo-hydraulic triaxial test facility with full data acquisition has been developed at Nottingham University as part of the UK Science and Engineering Research Council initiative in earthquake engineering. This apparatus is currently being used to investigate the response of a coarse silt contaminated by kaolin clay to cyclic stress and strain. High quality deformation data is generated by on sample instrumentation and enables the stiffness at very low strain levels to be determined accurately. This paper describes the development of the facility and presents some results of the tests carried out to date.

Cyclic Load Resistance Of Vertically Reinforced Sand Subgrades, Vijay K. Puri, James A. Chae, Braja M. Das

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents the results of laboratory scale model footing tests which were conducted for determining the cyclic load resistance of sand subgrades reinforced with semi-flexible vertical elements. The tests were conducted in a sandbox having a length of 91.5 cm, width 15.25 cm, and height of 61.0 cm. Steel bars 1. 58 mm in diameter were used as reinforcing elements. Tests were also conducted by using rough reinforcing elements. The test results indicate that the value of coefficient of elastic uniform compression of the footing on sand increases with the provision of vertical reinforcement in the sand subgrade. Rough …

Degradation Behavior Of Normally Consolidated Clay Under Cyclic Loading Condition, Meei-Ling Lin, Jiang-Yuan Chen Mar 1991

Degradation Behavior Of Normally Consolidated Clay Under Cyclic Loading Condition, Meei-Ling Lin, Jiang-Yuan Chen

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The degradation behavior of soil may become important when considering the response of soft clay under cyclic loading condition. A nonlinear model was proposed by Idriss, et al. to account for the degradation behavior based on the controlled-strain test. By adopting a numerical procedure, the data obtained in controlled-stress cyclic triaxial test can be used to find the degradation parameter defined in the nonlinear degradation model proposed by Idriss, et al. A series of consolidated-undrained controlled-stress and controlled-strain cyclic triaxial tests were performed on laboratory manufactured normally consolidated soft clay samples. The relationship between degradation parameter and strain was determined …

Dynamic Properties Of Saturated Coal Fly Ash, Pei-Ji Yu, Wei-Qin Qin Mar 1991

Dynamic Properties Of Saturated Coal Fly Ash, Pei-Ji Yu, Wei-Qin Qin

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The great part of fly ash produced by thermal power plants is either sluiced or filled in disposal areas in China. The dynamic properties of fly ash are important for solving geotechnical problems relating to fly ash mass under dynamic loadings. The high temperature during combustion makes fly ash nonplastic but pozzolanic. The nonplasticity causes the dynamic properties of sluiced and just compacted fly ash to be similar to ones of silts. The pozzolanic action causes obvious aging effect for compacted fly ash, by which an aging time of 180 days may increase maximum shear modulus by 75% to 400% …

In Situ And Laboratory Tests For The Evaluation Of Dynamic Geotechnical Properties Of A Cohesive Deposit In Florence, T. Crespellani, G. Vannucchi, A. Ghinelli

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In order to determine dynamic parameters to use for seismic microzoning purposes in a new development area near Florence, the dynamic behavior of the alluvial silty clays situated in the upper 60 m of the deposit was experimentally investigated using geophysical surveys and cyclic laboratory tests. Previous studies on the geotechnical properties of the clays of Florence revealed that, in spite of some similarities in a comparison with other coeval clays described in the literature this soil exhibits a few anomalies, as e.g. higher variations between field and laboratory shear waves velocities and remarkable differences in the coefficients of the …

Laboratory Tests On Embedded Reactor Building On Hard Ground, Hiroshi Hibino, Masanori Izumi, Ken'ichi Moriyama, Yukiharu Kiya

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In order to experimentally confirm the dynamic characteristics of embedded reactor building, shaking table tests and hammering tests were carried out, utilizing hard ground model made of hard silicone rubber and structural model made of aluminum which is embedded by soft silicone rubber. From the test results, it was confirmed that embedment increases system frequency of soil- structure interaction system, the ratio of elastic deformation of structure and radiation damping. Using the transient data of impulse responses, impedance function and foundation input motion could be identified in a smooth shape. Simulated results for non-embedded case by wave propagation theory and …

Shaft Resistance During Driving In Clay From Laboratory Tests, A. Ben Amar, D. Levacher, Ph. Lepert, P. Boisard Mar 1991

Shaft Resistance During Driving In Clay From Laboratory Tests, A. Ben Amar, D. Levacher, Ph. Lepert, P. Boisard

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents a laboratory study which aimed at investigating the soil/pile interaction during driving. A short review of past experimental works justifies the need for more consistent data. The test equipment (a rod driven through a sample of soil) is briefly presented and some signals are displayed to illustrate the quality of the measurements. The tests were performed on samples of normally consolidated Kaolinit clay. The analysis of the stress waves propagating in the rod, during driving, provided a good estimation of interaction forces, bar velocities and displacements of the pile model in the sample. Relationships were established between …

An Elastoplastic Model For Sand Liquefaction, Limin Zhang, Ting Hu Mar 1991

An Elastoplastic Model For Sand Liquefaction, Limin Zhang, Ting Hu

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The stress-dilatancy relations of sand for the stress paths involved in a complete periodic stress cycle are set up. The plastic potential functions for' each loading stage are derived consequently. Based on the idea of using a stress-strain relationship as an alternative strain-hardening law, the drained volume changes under different effective stress paths are derived and verified. A pore pressure generation mechanism which can take into account the dilatancy of soli directly and the related computational model are put forward. The model can calculate the instantaneous and residual pore pressures in sand and depict the liquefaction process of sand quantitatively, …

Dynamic Properties Of Soft Ground In Shanghai, H.-C. Fei, Y.-W. Wu, R. D. Woods

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Shanghai is located on the east coast of China at the mouth of the Yangtze river at the East China Sea. The alluvial soil deposit at this location is about 300 m deep with an upper soft soil stratum about 100m thick. A study of shear modulus G and damping ratio D of the soft soil stratum has been conducted using Drnevich Resonant Column Device. The test results have been compared with empirical formula for sands established by Hardin and Richart. New empirical relationships for the Shanghai silts and clays are presented.

Liquefaction Ground Deformation Predicted From Laboratory Tests, Mohammed H. Baziar, Ricardo Dobry

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A laboratory based approach is described to obtain the post-liquefaction steady-state shear strength of very loose, recently deposited, layered fluvial silty sand deposits susceptible to lateral spreading. Triaxial specimens are formed by the Remolded Discontinuously Vet Pluvial Soil Sample (RDVPSS preparation method. RDWPSS silty sand specimens are prepared by dumping the soil in water and a lowing for segregation and development of layers. Ten undrained tests were conducted using ranges of consolidation pressures σ̅3c = 0.2 to 2.7 kg/cm2 and Kc = σ̅1c/ σ̅3c = 1 to 2. The experiments included both monotonic compression …

Comparison Of Limit-State Seismic Earth Pressure Theories, D. G. Elms, R. Richards Jr. Mar 1991

Comparison Of Limit-State Seismic Earth Pressure Theories, D. G. Elms, R. Richards Jr.

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The paper considers how, for the limit analysis approach to the seismic design of earth retaining structures, both the magnitude of soil force and the center of pressure vary with the type of displacement of the structure in translation or rotation. Two approaches are used. The first assumes that for a rotating wall the apparent internal friction angle of the backfill will vary for purely geometrical reasons. The second considers the effect of the peaked form of the stress-strain curve for a dense cohensionless soil. Both approaches show that, compared with a wall rotating about its base, the center of …

Retaining Walls; Computation Of Seismically Induced Deformations, Sreenivas Alampalli, Ahmed-W. Elgamal Mar 1991

Retaining Walls; Computation Of Seismically Induced Deformations, Sreenivas Alampalli, Ahmed-W. Elgamal

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A two dimensional (2D) dynamic wall-soil computational model is proposed. The model accounts for wall and soil resonance, nonlinear wall-backfill soil interaction, simultaneous wall base sliding and rotation, nonlinear soil properties and possible pore pressure buildup. A bending beam with a base yielding rotational spring and a base translational slide element represents the wall. A 2D shear beam represents the soil system. The wall and supporting soil interaction through a Winkler type nonlinear no-tension spring system. An elasto-plast1c path-dependent hysteretic model accounts for nonl1near so1l behavior and possible pore pressure buildup. The seismic response of a 15m high cantilever wall …

Seismic Design Chart For Anchored Bulkheads, George Gazetas, Panos Dakoulas Mar 1991

Seismic Design Chart For Anchored Bulkheads, George Gazetas, Panos Dakoulas

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Evaluation of numerous case histories reveals that the seismic performance of anchored sheet pile quaywalls depends primarily on the anchoring system. Current pseudo-static procedures often lead to deficient anchoring, whose excessive displacements or failure trigger excessive permanent seaward displacement at the top of the bulkhead, accompanied by cracking and settlement behind the anchor. The results of the case histories lead to a Seismic Design Chart to be used in conjunction with the pseudo static procedure. The Chart delineates between acceptable and unacceptable degrees of damage, depending on the values of two dimensionless parameters that are functions of the material and …

Dynamical Analysis Of Soil-Piles Interaction Systems Under Earthquake Type Loadings, Kensuke Baba Mar 1991

Dynamical Analysis Of Soil-Piles Interaction Systems Under Earthquake Type Loadings, Kensuke Baba

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In order to investigate and discuss a theoretical prediction on the seismic response of pile groups in soil-structure interaction systems, the dynamic characteristics of piles surrounded by soil ground due to earthquake type disturbances in addition to those excited by the loadings at the head of piles. This paper is concerned with a theoretical analysis which is based on the three-dimensional wave propagation theory to find dynamic interaction characteristics of elastic pile groups embedded in the viscoelastic soil stratum on a rigid basis, under external forces concentrated at the head of piles and uniformly distributed bedrock motion. In dealing with …

Effect Of Soil Treatment On The Dynamic Response Of Machine Foundations, M. H. Maher, F. Venancio-Filho, S. J. Lacy Mar 1991

Effect Of Soil Treatment On The Dynamic Response Of Machine Foundations, M. H. Maher, F. Venancio-Filho, S. J. Lacy

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Improvement of foundation soils using existing treatment techniques such as chemical, compaction and jet grouting can significantly enhance the general load bearing capacity of foundations. This paper describes the effect of soil treatment on the dynamic response of a rigid foundation subjected to steady-state, lCM-amplitude high-frequency vibrations, such as those encountered in machine foundation problems. Dynamic finite element analysis were performed to evaluate the effect of soil treatment as a function of treatment type and geometry. The treatment of foundation soil significantly reduced the amplitude of vibration of the foundation with the reduction being highly dependent on the type and …

Selection Of Method For Seismic Slope Stability Analysis, Neven Matasovic Mar 1991

Selection Of Method For Seismic Slope Stability Analysis, Neven Matasovic

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The seismic stability of natural slopes in clayey materials is a subject about which much uncertainty still exists. Therefore, selection of the method for the seismic slope stability analysis is an important part of solving the problem. In this paper the basic elements of the pseudo-static method, the sliding block method and the Ishihara's method are discussed. A case history of seismic stability analysis of an Adriatic coast flysch slope has been employed to evaluate the applicability and reliability of these methods. The slope is treated as an infinite slope. Although no definitive conclusions can be drawn from a single …

Cellular Normal Modes: An Explanation For Alluvium Response To Earthquakes, W. R. Stephenson Mar 1991

Cellular Normal Modes: An Explanation For Alluvium Response To Earthquakes, W. R. Stephenson

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The cellular mode concept uses simple physical reasoning to treat the response of soft sediments to earthquake shaking. It assumes that discrete areas of the ground, or "cells", have normal modes of vibration, and that each cell has its own natural frequency of vibration. Evidence indicates that shaking effects often relate directly to cell properties. Thus the 1967 Caracas, 1976 Tangshan, 1985 Mexico and 1989 San Francisco earthquakes have damage patterns, liquefaction patterns and instrumental record features which reflect the response of cellular modes. Since the introduction of the concept in 1974 a range of analytical and numerical techniques have …

Earthquake Ground Motion Amplification In Mexico City, Hsien-Hsiang Chiang, Nien-Yin Chang Mar 1991

Earthquake Ground Motion Amplification In Mexico City, Hsien-Hsiang Chiang, Nien-Yin Chang

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The 1985 Michoacan earthquake caused extensive loss of life and severe damages. During the earthquake, the ground motions recorded at the soft clay sites were amplified by 8 to 50 times those at nearby rock sites. This study evaluates the factors influencing the seismic characteristics of the lakebed deposit in Mexico City. The essential components of response analysis are examined in both 1-D and 2-D soil systems. The amplification of ground motion can be evaluated in both 1-D and 2-D analyses. Results show that the soil property has much greater influence than the control motion on the surface ground motion. …
