Model Calculational Approach To The Conformation Of Adsorbed Polypeptide Fragments, Timothy J. Mckeon Apr 1991

Model Calculational Approach To The Conformation Of Adsorbed Polypeptide Fragments, Timothy J. Mckeon

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The focus of the paper is to examine possible conformational changes of peptides when placed in the presence of a poly-synthetic material. A major concern in the pharmaceutical industry is the loss of potency of polypeptide drug products during processing, packaging and storage. An example of this is polymer syringes being used in place of glass ones. The effect is that some protien-derived products experience structural changes due to contact with the polymer. This is otherwise known as surface denaturation. In order to understand the energetics of interfacial polypeptide systems, a calculational approach was used via the program Alchemy. The …

Vehicle Routing Using The Sweep Algorithm In Parallel, Jana G. Beattie, Carol L. Spelman Apr 1991

Vehicle Routing Using The Sweep Algorithm In Parallel, Jana G. Beattie, Carol L. Spelman

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This paper presents a parallel version of the Sweep Algorithm, a heuristic solution to the smgle-termma] vehicle routing problem The Sweep Algorithm uses a duster-first route-second approach in finding a near-optimal set of routes. The clusters of delivery points are formed by using the terminal as the center and moving around it m a sweeping fashion After a duster is defined, the route is found with a traveling salesperson algorithm.

The parallel version begins the sweep at different angles and performs both forward and backward sweeps. Each node handles a sweep and returns information concerning total distance traveled to the …

The Edge Strength Of Annealed And Heat-Strengthened Glass, Gregory P. Sallee Apr 1991

The Edge Strength Of Annealed And Heat-Strengthened Glass, Gregory P. Sallee

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Sadly, up until now, very little research has been conducted in the field of glass window strength. The purpose of this research, therefore, is to explore the topic of glass window strength such that we might offer some conclusive evidence as to the probable in-situ performance of structural windows. Our intention is to examine the specific phenomenon of thermally- induced stress and its effect on glass strength. J. G. Croll explains the existence of this well-documented problem. "Whenever a structure is subjected to a varying temperature distribution, or where it is prevented from free expansion, stresses will be induced that …

Simulated Annealing On The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Kevin Alons Apr 1991

Simulated Annealing On The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Kevin Alons

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The composite graph is a finite undirected graph G with no loops and no multiple edges and with positive integers associated with each vertex of G. The number of integers associated with each vertex is the chromaticity of the vertex. The chromatic degree of a vertex v is the sum of the chromaticity of v and the chromaticities of all vertices adjacent to v. The graph G is a v-composite graph if the chromaticities are not equal.

Identity Authentication Based On Keystroke Latencies Using Neural Networks, Angela Lammers, Sharon Langenfeld Apr 1991

Identity Authentication Based On Keystroke Latencies Using Neural Networks, Angela Lammers, Sharon Langenfeld

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Most computer security systems verify the identity of a user through objects in the user's possession such as keys or magnetic cards, or through knowledge the user has, such as a password or PIN number. There are, however, two other methods of user verification, which have as yet received little or no attention. There has been some work done on the third method, recognition of physiological patterns (such as finger prints, retinal patterns, or voice patterns), but this work has been limited and requires expensive hardware to implement. The final method of user verification is through actions such as signature …

Computer Visualization Of Irrotational Flow Over Bluff And Streamlined Bodies, Nora Okong' O Apr 1991

Computer Visualization Of Irrotational Flow Over Bluff And Streamlined Bodies, Nora Okong' O

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Computer programs were developed to visualize irrotational flow over bluff bodies (circular cylinders and half-bodies) and streamlined bodies (elliptical cylinders and airfoils). The method of superposition of flows was used, with stream functions or complex velocity potentials for fundamental flows being added to obtain the flows over the bodies. For the flow over the circular cylinders, half-bodies and elliptical cylinders, the stream function was calculated directly. The flow over the airfoil was obtained by Joukowski mapping of the imaginary part of the complex velocity potential for flow over a circular cylinder.

The programs developed will be valuable learning tools for …

The objective of this project is to predict "Rosin-Rammler" (RR) distribution equations for a fuel spray, given …

Aerosol Particle Bounding In Cascade Impactors, Bisma Husen Apr 1991

Aerosol Particle Bounding In Cascade Impactors, Bisma Husen

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Particle deposition characteristics were observed from the aerosol sampling results of a UNICO cascade impactor. A simple model of particle motion combined with Hiemenz flow of stagnation flow on a flat plate were developed and discussed.

Both results and analysis were compared to recent models on particle bouncing errors or secondary deposition which included vortices formation around the edge of the slot, back spin (Magnus effect), and hydrodynamic conditions of the particles. The analysis was limited to a laminar inviscid and incompressible case. The main obstacle in the observation was the fact that impactor nozzles were unsymmetrical to a considerable …

The research was done in the area of developing software which could be used to demonstrate the motion of gears. To demonstrate this motion involved learning about programming using graphics. Engineering skills were used in the programming in various ways. One way was in developing and implementing the equations and theory. The more critical engineering aspect of this project is in determining what is effective in demonstrating the kinematic principles associated with gear sets.

The programs will be a helpful aid in showing students what is happening with the motion of gear sets. Not only will instructors be allowed to …

Enantiomeric Separation By Cloud Point Precipitation Of Cyclodextrins, Deanna L. Schmid Apr 1991

Enantiomeric Separation By Cloud Point Precipitation Of Cyclodextrins, Deanna L. Schmid

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Certain cyclodextrins exhibit a diminishing solubility in water when heated. This phenomena of cloud point precipitation in conjunction with cyclodextrin's ability to form an inclusion complex with many compounds, can be used as a method of chemical separation. These cyclodextrins can be removed from the solution after precipitation by a hot filtration technique and the remaining solution analyzed by HPLC. Enantiomeric separations, concentration of compounds and removal of hazardous organic materials are all possible applications of cloud point extraction using cyclodextrins.

Process For Scanning Photographic Slides Of Laser Light Scattering With A Transmission Densitometer, Don Newburry Apr 1991

Process For Scanning Photographic Slides Of Laser Light Scattering With A Transmission Densitometer, Don Newburry

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Non-symmetric variations in photographic slides of polarized laser light scattering experimental results are difficult to see. This paper explains a process developed for measuring the light density at points throughout the slide area using a transmission densitometer, so an accurate description of the laser light scattering may be obtained. A slide was tested using the described process and the results are presented. The results turned out well, but there were some errors introduced by the instability of the densitometer and by human error in reading the chart recorder output.

The Electrochemical Characterization Of Ferrocene As A Guest Molecule In The Presence Of Ss-Cydodextrin, Anne T. Roberson Apr 1991

The Electrochemical Characterization Of Ferrocene As A Guest Molecule In The Presence Of Ss-Cydodextrin, Anne T. Roberson

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This experiment involves the development of electrochemical experimental methods for the determination of the oxidation/reduction potentials of a guest ferrocene complex (C10H10Fe) hosted by ß-cyclodextrin. The project was conducted so that the specific interaction of two molecules forming a unique inclusion compound can be used as a model for rapid analysis of other small molecules. In principle, the study is based on the expected equilibrium interaction of the iron compound with ß-cyclodextrin resulting in a complexed and an uncomplexed species equilibrium. The project's experimental objective is to determine if the redox potentials of both complexed and …

Analysis Of Two Circuits For Detecting Superconducting Transition Temperatures, Terry Bowness Apr 1991

Analysis Of Two Circuits For Detecting Superconducting Transition Temperatures, Terry Bowness

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

When measuring the transition temperature of large numbers of high Tc superconducting samples it is desirable to have available equipment that is both easy to operate and reliable. In addition should anything malfunction, the device should be relatively simple to repair. One method of measurement involves placing a sample in the magnetic field of an inductor, the inductor being an active member of some type of oscillating circuit. There are many standard oscillator designs which can be used for this type of application. In this report two such circuits, the tunnel diode and Hartley oscillators, will be examined and …

Evaluation Of Film Coated Window Glass Subjected To The Effects Of Windstorms, Ronald B. Shankland Jr. Apr 1991

Evaluation Of Film Coated Window Glass Subjected To The Effects Of Windstorms, Ronald B. Shankland Jr.

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The harm incurred by structures, equipment, and people due to window unit failure during a windstorm is drastically reduced if the glass remains in the frame until the storm has subsided.

There are basically two types of window glass used in curtain wall cladding systems: heat treated and annealed. Heat treated glass is tempered during its manufacture so that it retains residual surface stresses in the range of 3500 psi to 10,000 psi, or more. Annealed glass is cooled very slowly under controlled conditions in order to remove undesired internal stresses (Reznik, 1987). Also known as float glass, annealed glass …

Extrapolation Of The Experimental Data Of Electron Scattering, Hansen Chen Apr 1991

Extrapolation Of The Experimental Data Of Electron Scattering, Hansen Chen
