Comparison Of Three Axiomatic Systems For Csp, Hanan Lutfiyya, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Comparison Of Three Axiomatic Systems For Csp, Hanan Lutfiyya, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
Currently software engineering practices use relatively few formal methods. However, formal methods can be used to find errors earlier in the software cycle and hence reduce software cost. One useful formal method is program verification. The axiomatic approach to program verification uses assertions to characterize properties of program variables and relationships between them at various stages of program execution. In order to verify these assertions, axioms or inference rules are needed for each statement as well as some statement-independent inference rules. The message passing and nondeterminism of a distributed programming language present special difficulties. This paper examines and compares three …

Smili-Visualization Of Asynchronous Massively Parallel Programs, Rashi Khanna, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
A visualization model has been developed to analyse the performance of a massively parallel algorithm. Most visualization tools that have been developed so far for performance analysis are based generally on individual processor information and communication patterns (eg. processor load, message traffic etc.). These tools, however, are inadequate for massively parallel computations. It is difficult to comprehend the visual information for many processors. The model, SMil...l (Scientific visualization in Multicomputing for Interpretation of Large amounts of Information), addresses this problem by using abstract representations to attain a composite picture which gives better insight to the behavior of the algorithm. Chernoff's …

Tensile Strength Of Welded Connections, Wei-Wen Yu, Roger A. Laboube
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE The tensile strength of an arc spot weld is given only limited attention in the current edition of the AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. To broaden the design engineer's understanding of the behavior of arc spot welds, and to expand the specification's application for arc spot welds, the American Iron and Steel Institute, in 1989, initiated a research study at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The UMR research consisted of a comprehensive literature review, and experimental study which comprised of over 260 individual connection test specimens. The test specimen selection enabled the investigation of the …

Flexural Behavior Of Web Elements With Openings, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, K. D. Batson
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this phase of the research has been to investigate the flexural behavior of C-shaped members with web openings. Three common industry standard C-sections were tested as outlined in the first progress report. The web openings were located at 24 inches on center as illustrated in Fig. 1. Each test specimen was subjected to two point loads until the ultimate flexural strength of the member was obtained. This report summarizes the test procedure and results of the research to date.

Network Model Investigation Of Gas Transport In Bidisperse Porous Adsorbents, John H. Petropoulos, John K. Petrou, Athanasios I. Liapis

A capillary network model consisting of a micropore network permeated by one of macropores of randomly varying size has been constructed. Although simplified (to keep computer space and time requirements low) in relation to a real bidisperse porous adsorbent or catalyst, it embodies the salient pore structural features likely to determine the gas-transport behavior of such porous solids. Suitable model calculations of Knudsen gas-phase and surface diffusion enabled us to (i) validate useful approximate methods for the more economical evaluation of network permeability and (ii) demonstrate certain important characteristic effects of nonrandom bidisperse pore structure on transport behavior and their …

The 0° δ-electron emission was investigated by an electron-projectile coincidence technique as a function of incoming and outgoing projectile charge state for 0.53 MeV u-1Cuq+ on He. The electron emission spectra vary strongly with initial and final projectile charge state. For pure ionization channels the cross sections follow for low electron energy the q2-scaling law whereas in the binary encounter regime the scaling is reversed. Ctmc calculations are in fair agreement with the experimental data. © 1991 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Coincidences between two sulfur K x rays were detected from collisions of hydrogenlike S ions with H2 gas in the projectile energy range between 150 and 225 MeV. These K x rays are emitted in the decay of doubly excited states formed in the collisions via transfer and excitation. The excitation function for two coincident Kβ transitions peaks at about 175 MeV, slightly above the expected KMM resonance energy for resonant transfer and excitation (RTE). This demonstrates the occurrence of ΔN≥2 transitions (i.e., KMM and higher resonances) in the RTE process. The cross sections for the population of the …

Applying Parallel Bidirectional Search To A System For The Diagnosis Of Faults, J. E. Finlay, R. W. Wilkerson
Computer Science Technical Reports
Decreasing the time it takes an application to run is always an important concern. One of the ways to achieve this is through separating work in the application that need not be run sequentially onto two or more processors to be run in parallel. This work will take a look at an attempt to do this in one of the primary application areas of Artificial Intelligence, diagnosis.
Reiter's theory is presented for the diagnosis of faults from first principles, as well as a correction to the algorithm which defines the theory. An existing implementation of the theory is also discussed. …

Two resolution proof strategies developed by Peterson [ Pe76j are implemented by modifying Otter, an existing automated theorem prover. The methods, Lock-T refutation and LNL-T refutation, are generalizations of unit refutation and input refutation, respectively, to non-Hom sets and represent independent, equivalent but opposite ways of searching. Thus, the two techniques can be run simultaneously, exchanging only important intermediate results known as lemmas.
The algorithms used in the implementation, which are based on a corrected version of the foundational work, are outlined in detail and justified. Next, the newly implemented strategies are tested individually and together on various non-Horn challenge …

Manufacturing industries are constantly looking for better ways to develop the software required to plan and control production processes. Experimental software is being developed using objectoriented program development techniques. There are many prototypes being used and tested at both academic and industrial institutions around the world.
The purpose of this paper is to examine a selection of these systems in order to highlight some of the main benefits which are being achieved by using object-oriented methods over the use of conventional approaches. Practical considerations are made concerning the long-term adoption of object-oriented methodologies in software development for Computer Integrated Manufacturing …
Incremental Learning Of Numeric Clusters In Classifier Systems, K. R. Hacke, D. C. St. Clair
Incremental Learning Of Numeric Clusters In Classifier Systems, K. R. Hacke, D. C. St. Clair
Computer Science Technical Reports
Classifier systems are knowledge-based learning algorithms which take training instances as input and produce a set of rules as output Many classifier systems represent the knowledge they learn in the form of one or more decision trees. Accurate knowledgebase systems for a variety of domains have been constructed by generating decision trees using J. R. Quinlan's (1986) inductive algorithm ID3 and P. E. Utgoffs (1988) IDS. IDS is an incremental version of ID3.
Unfortunately, all these algorithms suffer from the inability to easily and effectively handle domains with numeric-valued attributes. Numeric attributes are those whose values are taken from a …

Study Of Joint Flexibility In Steel Frame Structures, Randy R. Frank
Study Of Joint Flexibility In Steel Frame Structures, Randy R. Frank
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
Joint flexibility plays an important role in the distribution of strains and displacements in the frame structures of buildings, towers, automobiles, etc.. The objective of this project is to study the effect of flexibility (or rigidity) of two simple mechanical joints in frame structures on the stress and displacement distributions, using both experimental and analytical methods. Three welded and three bolted samples were fabricated using A-36 low carbon steel in a two column and horizontal crossmember (table) arrangement. This arrangement allows for both shear forces and axial forces in the joint. From a three element rectangular rosette strain gage attached …

1991 Oure Report, Including The 1st Annual Umr Undergraduate Research Symposium -- Entire Proceedings, University Of Missouri--Rolla
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experiences program began in 1990. The aims were to enrich the learning process and make it more active, encourage interaction between students and faculty members, raise the level of research on the campus, help recruit superior students to the graduate program, and support the notion that teaching and research are compatible and mutually reinforcing. Chancellor Jischke made available an annual budget of $50,000 to support the program.
As the papers herein attest, the OURE program is achieving its goals — UMR graduates have performed research on an enormous variety of topics, have worked closely with …
