Dynamic Id3: A Symbolic Learning Algorithm For Many-Valued Attribute Domains, Roger Gallion, Chaman Sabharwal, Daniel C. St. Clair, William E. Bond Mar 1993

Dynamic Id3: A Symbolic Learning Algorithm For Many-Valued Attribute Domains, Roger Gallion, Chaman Sabharwal, Daniel C. St. Clair, William E. Bond

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quinlan's ID3 machine learning algorithm induces classification trees (rules) from a set of training examples. The algorithm is extremely effective when training examples are composed of attributes whose values are taken from small discrete domains. The classification accuracy of ID3-produced trees on domains whose attributes are many-valued tends to be marginal due to the large number of possible values which may be associated with each attribute. Attempts to solve this problem by a priori grouping of attribute values into distinct subsets has met with limited success. The dynamic ID3 algorithm improves the performance of ID3 on this type of problem …

Evolution Of Atomic Motion In An Intense Standing Wave, Jian Chen, J. Greg Story, Randall G. Hulet Mar 1993

Evolution Of Atomic Motion In An Intense Standing Wave, Jian Chen, J. Greg Story, Randall G. Hulet

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have investigated the effect of the dipole force and its fluctuation on the motion of Li atoms in an intense, one-dimensional, near-resonant standing light wave. The duration of the interaction of the atoms with the standing wave was varied from several tens of spontaneous-emission lifetimes to several hundreds. For a standing-wave frequency blue detuned from resonance, diffusive heating can dominate the time-averaged dissipative dipole force so that there is no steady-state momentum distribution. However, for sufficiently large blue detunings, the rate of diffusion is so slow that the resulting distribution approaches a quasisteady state. For red detunings, the diffusion …

The Origin Of Nyc’S Nickname The Big Apple, Gerald Leonard Cohen Mar 1993

The Origin Of Nyc’S Nickname The Big Apple, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The expression "The Big Apple," meaning "something special, out of the ordinary, world class" is traced from its adoption as the nickname of New York City in 1971 back through time, to the jazz culture of the 1930s and ultimately to its apparent origins in racing jargon in the early decades of the 20th century. © 1993 Maney Publishing.

Assessment Of 1991 Nehrp Provisions For Nonstructural Components And Recommended Revisions, Tsuteh Soong, Genda Chen, Z. Wu, R. H. Zhang, M. Grigoriu Mar 1993

Assessment Of 1991 Nehrp Provisions For Nonstructural Components And Recommended Revisions, Tsuteh Soong, Genda Chen, Z. Wu, R. H. Zhang, M. Grigoriu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As one part of the 1994 update effort of the 1991 NEHRP provisions, the seismic design force formulas for nonstructural components as they exist in the 1991 provisions are critically assessed and some of their shortcomings are identified. Various levels of improvements to these formulas are then presented which, on the one hand, preserve the equivalent lateral force format for design applicability and, on the other, correct some of the deficiencies on the basis of analyses, experimental results and observation data from past earthquakes.

Based on different interpretations of the component seismic coefficients as well as different degrees of simplicity …

An Intelligent Approach To Discrete Sampling Of Parametric Curves, Chaman Sabharwal Mar 1993

An Intelligent Approach To Discrete Sampling Of Parametric Curves, Chaman Sabharwal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In graphics and animation applications, two of the problems are: (1) representation of an analytic curve by a discrete set of sampled points and (2) determining the similarity between two parametric curves. It is necessary to measure the accuracy of approximation and to have a metric to calculate the disparity between two parametric curves. Both of these problems have been associated with the reparameterization of the curves with respect to arc length. One of the methods uses Gaussian Quadrature to determine the arc length parameterization [Guenter and Parent 1990], while another interesting technique is a simple approximation method [Fritsch and …

Recovering 3d Image Parameters From Corresponding Two 2d Images, Chaman Sabharwal Mar 1993

Recovering 3d Image Parameters From Corresponding Two 2d Images, Chaman Sabharwal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved algorithm for computing the three-dimensional structure of a scene from pair of stereo images is given. The spatial relationship between the two images is not known, only the "corresponding" points in the two images are known. This problem of 3D scene reconstruction involves: (1) establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the image plane stereo pairs corresponding to the spatial points-'the correspondence problem', and (2) determining the relative orientation of the two image planes and the depth relation of spatial points with respect to the image planes. This paper assumes the first problem solved [Usikov et al. 1991] and addresses …

Terrain Classification In Sar Images Using Principal Components Analysis And Neural Networks, Mahmood R. Azimi-Sadjadi, Saleem Ghaloum, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of a neural network-based classifier for classifying three distinct scenes (urban, park and water) from several polarized SAR images of San Francisco Bay area is discussed. The principal component (PC) scheme or Karhunen-Loeve (KL) transform is used to extract the salient features of the input data, and to reduce the dimensionality of the feature space prior to the application to the neural networks. Employing PC scheme along with polarized images used in this study, led to substantial improvements in the classification rates when compared with previous studies. When a combined polarization architecture is used the classification rate for …

Genetic Algorithms For Vertex Splitting In Dags, Matthias Mayer, Fikret ErçAl Jan 1993

Genetic Algorithms For Vertex Splitting In Dags, Matthias Mayer, Fikret ErçAl

Computer Science Technical Reports

Directed Acyclic Graphs are often used to model circuits and networks. The path length in such Directed Acyclic Graphs represents circuit or network delays. In the vertex splitting problem, the objective is to determine a minimum number of vertices from the graph to split such that the resulting graph has no path of length greater than a given δ. The problem has been proven to be NP-hard. A Genetic Algorithm is used to solve the DAG Vertex Splitting Problem. This approach uses a variable string length to represent the vertices that split the graph and a dynamic population size. The …

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This report is an extension of the paper "Influence of Pattern Geometry and other Process Parameters on Mold Filling in the Aluminum EPC Process", by Yuan Sun, Hai-Lung Tsai and Donald R. Askeland (2). The increase in fluidity in the expendable pattern casting (EPC) process with pattern perimeter, volume to surface area (V/A) ratio, and pouring temperature was studied for a 700°C-900°C temperature range and for both aluminum and cast iron.

Solidification Modeling Of Centrifugal Casting, Stephen M. Lane Jan 1993

Solidification Modeling Of Centrifugal Casting, Stephen M. Lane

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This paper describes the methodology used to estimate the solidification time of castings produced by processes in which normal thermal analysis cannot be used, such as centrifugal casting. This methodology utilizes the relationship between microstructure, in particular secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS), and freezing time. Using this method it is shown that position within the casting and casting geometry affect the SDAS and freezing time. However, the SDAS did not vary across the wall section due to differences in filling pattern compared to sand casting. Further research is necessary to determine filling pattern effects on microstructure.

Analysis Of Turnability For A Three Terminal Microwave Network, Michael J. Bahr Jan 1993

Analysis Of Turnability For A Three Terminal Microwave Network, Michael J. Bahr

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Three-terminal microwave networks can be shown to exhibit qualities that would make them desirable to be used as multiple terminal devices. Using microwave theory, where instantaneous voltage is a function of position on the line, this situation will be examined. These devices use the interference principle of propagating waves as the basis of their characteristics. This investigation will probe a three- terminal microwave network with one input and two output. This configuration acts similar to a splitter where the outputs may be controlled. These three terminals, plus manipulation of the lengths of each side, actually makes this a four terminal …

Depositional Facies Analysis And Sea Level Curve Determination From The Soth Western St. Francois Mts. To The Western Margin Of The Reelfoot Rift, Missouri, Aaron Ramon Rezendez Jan 1993

Depositional Facies Analysis And Sea Level Curve Determination From The Soth Western St. Francois Mts. To The Western Margin Of The Reelfoot Rift, Missouri, Aaron Ramon Rezendez

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Knowledge of the relative influence of eustatic and tectonic controls on sedimentation in basins is important to developing a regional facies model. The Reelfoot Rift basin is located on the southern margin of the North American Craton. The tectonic and sedimentary history of the rift began during Middle Cambrian time and extended through the Early Ordovician. Oil test well cuttings and cores were used to construct a stratigraphic fence extending from the Cambro- Ordovician platform west of the St. Francois Mts. southeastward info the rifted basin. Three major transgressive-regressive sequences and numerous minor transgressive-regressive sequences were observed in Cambro-Ordovician rocks …

Tape Casting For Lead Zirconate Titanate (Pzt) Multilayer Composites, Jane L. Cochran Jan 1993

Tape Casting For Lead Zirconate Titanate (Pzt) Multilayer Composites, Jane L. Cochran

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Tape casting is a process for making thin flat ceramic pieces by using a scraping blade or "doctor blade" to evenly coat a smooth surface with a slip[ 1 ]. The slip is a mixture of powder, solvent, binder, and other organics which result in a paint like consistency after they are mixed.

The tapes is cast into thicknesses ranging from 1 to 50 mils on a smooth surface , which is usually made of Mylar, and left to dry.

Once the tape has dried it can be cut into several different shapes and sizes, and then fired to form …

The Electrochemical Characterization Of A Platinum Cyclooctadiene Complex As A Guest Molecule In The Presence Of Ss-Cyclodextrin, Timothy S. Evenson Jan 1993

The Electrochemical Characterization Of A Platinum Cyclooctadiene Complex As A Guest Molecule In The Presence Of Ss-Cyclodextrin, Timothy S. Evenson

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The equilibrium constants for the complexation of the dichloroplatinum- cycloocta-1,5-diene complex with p-cyclodextrin in N,N-dimethyl- formamide was determined using electrochemical cyclic voltammetry. The constants for both the oxidized and reduced forms of the platinum compound were determined. Model redox experiments were conducted with ferrocene and 1,1 ’-dimethylferrocene before the platinum compound was studied in order to establish parameters for the experimental method. Also determined was the ratio of the diffusion constants of the guest molecule with and without being complexed with cyclodextrin. In addition to the platinum complex being electrochemically characterized as a guest of cyclodextrin, circular dichroism studies were …

Vortex Developments Over An Accelerated Airfoil At High Angles Of Attack, Jacopo A. Frigerio Jan 1993

Vortex Developments Over An Accelerated Airfoil At High Angles Of Attack, Jacopo A. Frigerio

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Proper control of unsteady separated flow developments over the lifting surfaces of an aircraft may prove to be an effective method of enhancing aerodynamic lift and producing better aircraft performance. Due to the complexity of unsteady flow separation and subsequent flow developments, experimental exploration and observation are essential in providing a source for comparison and verification with theoretical and computational models. In light of these motivations, a new experimental system that is capable of generating wide of range of unsteady flow histories has been developed and employed to visualize flow developments over an airfoil in accelerated-decelerated motion. The paper presents …

Motorized Throttle Plate, John D. Crawford Jan 1993

Motorized Throttle Plate, John D. Crawford

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The objective of this project was to develop a throttle plate mechanism that can be used to simulate transient engine operation. This throttle plate was designed so as to regulate the quantity of air flow entering a Port Fuel Injected (PFI) spark ignition engine prior to the combustion of the fuel-air mixture. The throttle plate is linked to a data acquisition system in order to study the port fuel injection characteristics of the fuel-air mixture. This data acquisition system links the throttle plate angular position information to data obtained using a nonintrusive laser based diagnostic technique, therefore enabling the study …

Fiber Optic Fabry-Perot Sensors For Smart Structures, Thomas K. Edmondson Jan 1993

Fiber Optic Fabry-Perot Sensors For Smart Structures, Thomas K. Edmondson

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Optical fiber sensors promise to play a large role in the development of smart structures which have the ability to continuously monitor themselves for internal and external structural deformation, and even actively change shape. This investigation studies one such sensor based on a fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer, which detects the displacement between two points of a material. Sensor theory and construction are discussed, and the tools used to analyze sensor output are developed. The interferometer is then tested by attaching it to a large cantilever beam which is deflected to produce strain. This experimental data is then used to determine …

Experimental Investigation On The Longitudinal Stability Of A P51 Mustang Aircraft Model, Erich Fitzpatrick Jan 1993

Experimental Investigation On The Longitudinal Stability Of A P51 Mustang Aircraft Model, Erich Fitzpatrick

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This project involved the development of a test model of the P-51 Mustang aircraft and an experimental investigation of its stability. The model was developed to investigate the influence of the main horizontal tail parameters ( tail incidence, position of c.g., stabilizer moment arm, etc.)on the pitching moment around the aircraft’s center of gravity. To accomplish such a task, a test model was designed and fabricated with flat plate and airfoil wing configurations. The tail incidence of the flat plate stabilizer is adjustable over the entire range of positive and negative angles. A rechargeable, electric motor mounted in the fuselage adjusts …

Catalysis Of Charcoal Emissions, James M. Horak Jan 1993

Catalysis Of Charcoal Emissions, James M. Horak

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This paper is about the development of a system to reduce the emissions of charcoal kilns with the catalyst from automotive catalytic converters. This device, called the charcoal kiln emissions oxidizer (CKEO), was designed and fabricated to meet the goal of a cost effective means to reduce the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from charcoal kilns. Testing of the CKEO was never carried out as a test site could not be secured by this writing. The need for the CKEO, the theory behind it, and a procedure to test it are presented.

Aerodynamics Of Solar Vehicles, Richard R. Pardun Jan 1993

Aerodynamics Of Solar Vehicles, Richard R. Pardun

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The purpose of this research project is to design the shape of a fully road worthy vehicle operating under nothing but the power of the sun. This vehicle was to meet all racing regulations of The Sunrayce and the World Solar Challenge. Because of the specific use of this vehicle, this project provides a chance to explore the aerodynamically ideal vehicle. Little attention has to be paid to practicality. The result is a very streamlined, highly aerodynamically efficient car, that is still stable and safe.
