Effect Of Superabsorbent Polymer On 3d Printing Characteristics As Rheology-Modified Agent, Yu Cun Gu, Kamal H. Khayat
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study aims to investigate the effects of two superabsorbent polymer (SAP) types, S1 and S2 (with continual absorption and rapid desorption, respectively) as rheology-modified agent on 3D printing characteristics. Three base mixtures were selected with different thixotropic behaviors (i.e., mixtures with high re-flocculation (τfloc), high structuration rate (Athix), and both low τfloc and Athix, respectively). The initial mini-slump flow of 190±10 mm was secured by adjusting superplasticizer (SP) or water demand (increasing w/b by either 0.025 or 0.05). An extrudable region was determined within the range of τfloc (200-890 Pa) and Athix (15-60 Pa/min). The use of the S2 …

Carbonation curing technology plays an important role in carbon cycling and improving the properties of cement-based materials, while the nucleation and growth mechanism of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is still unclear. Based on molecular dynamics simulation, the formation process and nucleation mechanism of CaCO3 in confined C-S-H nanopores with different calcium-silicon ratios were studied. The results show that the clustering behavior of CaCO3 in C-S-H nanopores filled with saturated CaCO3 solution can be divided into three phases, rapid agglomeration stage, slow cluster stage, and stable cluster stage. The aggregation is mainly dependent on ionic bonding for …

The backwater lowland habitats of large rivers, like the Mississippi River in North America, present complex and often inaccessible environments for traditional capture-based fish biodiversity sampling. Our knowledge of the assemblages of the fishes that occupy such habitats is often incomplete, and this can compromise management efforts. We employed environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding methods to sample a Mississippi River bottom wetland system to assess the ichthyofaunal diversity and the assemblage structure across habitat types, and we compared our results with capture-based survey records for the same habitats. We collected water samples in the spring and fall of 2022 from slough, …

We demonstrate the controllable generation of distinct types of dispersive shock waves emerging in a quantum droplet bearing environment with the aid of steplike initial conditions. Dispersive regularization of the ensuing hydrodynamic singularities occurs due to the competition between mean-field repulsion and attractive quantum fluctuations. This interplay delineates the dominance of defocusing (hyperbolic) and focusing (elliptic) hydrodynamic phenomena being designated by the real and the imaginary speed of sound, respectively. Specifically, the symmetries of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii model led to a three-parameter family, encompassing two densities and a relative velocity of the underlying Riemann problem utilized herein. Surprisingly, dispersive shock …

Instantons In Φ4 Theories: Transseries, Virial Theorems, And Numerical Aspects, Ludovico T. Giorgini, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Enrico M. Malatesta, Tommaso Rizzo, Jean Zinn-Justin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We discuss numerical aspects of instantons in two- and three-dimensional φ4 theories with an internal O(N) symmetry group, the so-called N-vector model. By combining asymptotic transseries expansions for large arguments with convergence acceleration techniques, we obtain high-precision values for certain integrals of the instanton that naturally occur in loop corrections around instanton configurations. Knowledge of these numerical properties is necessary in order to evaluate corrections to the large-order factorial growth of perturbation theory in φ4 theories. The results contribute to the understanding of the mathematical structures underlying the instanton configurations.

We use the two-center wave-packet convergent close-coupling approach to ion-atom collisions to calculate the energy and angular distribution of electrons emitted in proton collisions with atomic hydrogen. Results are provided across a wide range of intermediate energies where many competing reaction channels make calculations challenging. The present data consistently agree with the available experimental measurements and improve upon previously available results based on perturbative and classical methods. Furthermore, we extend the range of electron angles and energies over which theoretical data are available for the doubly differential cross section for ionization. This provides strong evidence that at the level of …

As high-strength aluminum alloys present several processability issues with additive manufacturing (AM), Scalmalloy®, an Al-Mg-Sc-Zr-based alloy, has been developed. This alloy is age-hardenable, allowing it to precipitate out a strengthening precipitate phase, Al3(Sc,Zr). The manufacturer recommends a single-stage aging treatment at 325 °C for 4 h; however, the majority of the literature studies utilize a powder bed processing known as selective laser melting (SLM) over powder-fed processing directed energy deposition (DED). This study addresses the lack of information on heat treatments for DED fabrication by exploring the application of artificial aging temperatures of 300–400 °C for 2, 4, and 6 …

To investigate continental dynamics underneath the south-central Tibetan plateau, which composes the Himalayan, Lhasa, and Qiangtang blocks, we have conducted comprehensive examinations of seismic azimuthal anisotropy in the crust using receiver functions (RFs) and crustal and mantle anisotropy using teleseismic shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis. In the Qiangtang block, the observed predominantly E-W fast orientations from RF and SWS analyses with similar magnitude are interpreted as resulting from eastward crustal flow with minor contributions from the mantle. In the Lhasa block, the crustal anisotropy is approximately N-S oriented, which is parallel to the strike of rift basins and southward crustal …

Skid resistance is a critical aspect for traffic safety since it significantly influences vehicle control and minimizes the distance required for emergency braking. The surface characteristics of pavements play a pivotal role in determining skid resistance. To achieve the optimal skid resistance performance, the pavement must sustain a specific level of friction. Thus, it is advantageous to apply surface treatments in areas that require enhanced friction. This study investigates the impact of factors such as the aggregate source, size, morphological properties, and abrasion levels on the skid resistance and frictional characteristics of a high-friction surface treatment (HFST). A complete investigation …

Indefinability Of Effective Stress For Unsaturated Soils, Xiong Zhang, Sandra Houston
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
For decades, researchers have searched for an unsaturated soil effective stress that performs analogously to effective stress for saturated soils and provides some simplifications over net stress and suction approaches. A recent debate is whether problems identified with unsaturated soil effective stress can be resolved via elastoplastic analyses. Effective stress equations are reviewed and categorized as being based on volume change, shear strength, yield, or degree of saturation. These equations are evaluated for consistency with saturated soil effective stress expectations using the Barcelona basic model (BBM), simplified into an integrated elastoplastic framework using the modified state surface approach (MSSA). We explore the formation of one-dimensional two-component quantum droplets with intercomponent particle imbalance using an ab initio many-body method. It is shown that for moderate particle imbalance each component maintains its droplet flat-top or Gaussian-type character depending on the intercomponent attraction. Importantly, large particle imbalance leads to a flat-top shape of the majority component with the minority exhibiting spatially localized configurations. The latter imprint modulations on the majority component which become more pronounced for increasing interspecies attraction. The same holds for larger mass or increasing repulsion of the minority species. Such structural transitions are also evident in the underlying two-body …

In this letter, we report our observation of an extraordinarily rich phase diagram of a LaScO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure. Close to the superconducting transition temperature, the system hosts a superconducting critical point of the Infinite-randomness type characterized by an effective dynamical exponent ν z that diverges logarithmically. At lower temperatures, we find the emergence of a magnetic field-tuned metallic phase that co-exists with a quantum Griffiths phase (QGP). Our study reveals a previously unobserved phenomenon in 2D superconductors—an unanticipated suppression of the QGP below a crossover temperature in this system. This concealment is accompanied by the destruction of the …

Since the groundbreaking work by Cleveland and McGill in 1984, studies have revealed the difficulties humans have extracting quantitative data from visualizations as simple as bar graphs. As a first step toward understanding this situation, this paper proposes a mathematical model of the interpretation effort of a bar graph using concepts drawn from eye tracking. First, three key areas of interest (AOIs) are identified, and fixations are modeled as random point clouds within the AOIs. Stochastic geometry is introduced via random triangles connecting fixations within the adjacent key visual regions. The so-called landmark methodology provides the basis for the probabilistic …

Understanding the dynamics of mixed-gas adsorption is essential for industrial-scale adsorptive separations. Also, obtaining binary adsorption isotherms is essential to gain a better understanding of adsorbate-adsorbent interactions in multicomponent gas mixtures. Porous organic cages (POCs) are highly porous, crystalline materials, with a small average pore window that make them promising candidates for separation applications. In this work, we utilized zero-length column (ZLC) technique to not only determine the kinetics of CO2/H2 separation over CC3 but also obtain the binary adsorption isotherms. The ultra crystalline diffusivities of 1.49 x 10–4 and 8.31 x 10–5 cm2 …
