Solving The Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem With Environmental Criteria Based On Real Estimations In Road Transportation: A Case Study, Javier Faulin, Angel Juan, Fernando Lera, Scott Erwin Grasman
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
One of the most important objectives in company logistics is the optimization of goods distribution considering the whole value chain. There are many algorithms to optimize the capacitated vehicle routing problems (CVRP) associated to problems of road transportation. the objective function of those problems usually involves distance, cost, number of vehicles, or profits, among others. in this contribution we also take into account environmental costs. Here, we want to manage environmental costs estimations based on surveys about road transportation crossing rural areas having valuable biological and natural stock. Thus, we develop some variants (AWEC) to traditional heuristic algorithms, such as …

Accelerated Construction For Pedestrian Bridges: A Comparison Between High Strength Concrete (Hsc) And High-Strength Self Consolidating Concrete (Hs-Scc), John J. Myers, Kurt Bloch
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-strength concrete (HSC) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are materials utilized in bridge construction to lower cost, reduce construction time, and increase service life of bridge structures. Recently, high-strength self-consolidating concrete (HS-SCC), a highly flowable concrete that does not require vibration, has been developed as a viable alternative to HSC for use in situations with congested steel or a need for rapid construction. Coupling HS-SCC with GFRP bars could create durable structures built rapidly. Several performance related issues remain to be investigated such as the behavior of prestress loss, shear, creep, shrinkage, thermal gradients, mechanical property development, time …
Correction Factors For An Analytical Method Of Pile Foundation Response Subjected To Horizontal Dynamic Vibrations, Domenica Cambio, Louis Ge
Correction Factors For An Analytical Method Of Pile Foundation Response Subjected To Horizontal Dynamic Vibrations, Domenica Cambio, Louis Ge
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In pile foundation response due to horizontal vibration, it is known that the original Novak's method overestimates the dominant frequency and underestimates the dominant amplitude of pile head responses. It is found that reducing the pile-foundation system stiffness and damping coefficients would lead to a smaller dominant frequency and higher dominant amplitude, respectively. the objective of this paper is to evaluate and determine appropriate correction factors for stiffness and damping coefficients for the analytical model developed by Novak and El-Sharnouby (1983) to improve the theoretical predictions of pile foundations subjected to dynamic forces. the reduction factors were determined by continuously …

The effectiveness of innovative polymeric coatings, polyurea and Poly aspartic polyurea, to protect structural steel from corrosion was investigated through standard laboratory tests. the coating evaluation tests included salt fog test, QUV weathering test, adhesion test, and freeze-thaw stability test. These tests were used to assess the long-term performance of coating technologies compared to the conventional polyurethane type coatings, i.e. coating systems with inorganic zinc primer, epoxy intermediate coat and polyurethane topcoat. This paper presents part of results in the aforementioned evaluation tests. the results illustrate that Poly aspartic coating systems are very promising for corrosion mitigation and can provide …

Development Of Optimal Controllers For A Dfig Based Wind Farm In A Smart Grid Under Variable Wind Speed Conditions, Priyam Chakravarty, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Development Of Optimal Controllers For A Dfig Based Wind Farm In A Smart Grid Under Variable Wind Speed Conditions, Priyam Chakravarty, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Variations in wind speed cause different transient responses in a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-Based wind farm. Transients during grid disturbances, depending on controller parameters, can lead to a system collapse, especially when significant fluctuations exist in wind speed despite the presence of SmartParks (energy storage). When a fault is introduced, the variable frequency converter (VFC) is the most susceptible part in a DFIG. the VFC is controlled by a set of Proportional Integral (PI) controllers. Parameters of PI controllers are very difficult to tune using traditional methods due to nonlinearity in DFIGs and the increasing complexity of smart grids. …

Accurate Interaction Energies For Problematic Dispersion-Bound Complexes: Homogeneous Dimers Of Nccn, P2, And Pccp, Edward G. Hohenstein, Heather M. Jaeger, Emily J. Carrell, Gregory S. Tschumper, C. David Sherrill
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
All intermolecular interactions involve London dispersion forces. The accurate treatment of dispersion is essential for the computation of realistic interaction potentials. In general, the most reliable method for computing intermolecular interactions is coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] in conjunction with a sufficiently flexible Gaussian atomic orbital basis set, a combination which is not routinely applicable due to its excessive computational demands (CPU time, memory, storage). Recently, many theoretical methods have been developed that attempt to account for dispersion in a more efficient manner. It is well-known that dispersion interactions are more difficult to compute in some systems …

The structures of more than 70 low-lying water clusters ranging in size from (H2O)3 to (H2O)10 have been fully optimized with several different quantum mechanical electronic structure methods, including second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) in conjunction with correlation consistent triple-ζ basis sets (aug-cc-pVTZ for O and cc-pVTZ for H, abbreviated haTZ). Optimized structures obtained with less demanding computational procedures were compared to the MP2/haTZ ones using both MP2/haTZ single point energies and the root-mean-square (RMS) deviations of unweighted Cartesian coordinates. Based on these criteria, B3LYP/6-31+G(d,2p) substantially outperforms both HF/haTZ and MP2/6-31Gz.ast. B3LYP/6-31+G(d,2p) structures never …

We propose a novel model order reduction technique that is able to accurately reduce electrically large systems with delay elements, which can be described by means of neutral delayed differential equations. It is based on an adaptive multipoint expansion and model order reduction of equivalent first order systems. the neutral delayed differential formulation is preserved in the reduced model. Pertinent numerical results validate the proposed model order reduction approach. © 2011 IEEE.

InGaN based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with undoped GaN interlayer of variant thicknesses grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique have been investigated. It was found that the thickness of undoped GaN interlayers affected LEDs' performance greatly. The LED with 50 nm undoped GaN interlayer showed higher light output power and lower reverse-leakage current compared with the others at 20 mA. Based on electrical and optical characteristics analysis and numerical simulation, these improvements are mainly attributed to the improvement of the quality of depletion region by inserting an undoped GaN layer, as well as reduction of the Shockley-Read-Hall recombination in InGaN/GaN …

In this paper, the infinite horizon optimal tracking control problem is solved online and forward-in-time for leader-follower based formation control of nonholonomic mobile robots. using the backstepping design approach, the dynamical controller inputs for the robots are approximated from nonlinear optimal control techniques in order to track the control velocities designed to keep the formation. the proposed nonlinear optimal control technique, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming, uses neural networks (NN's) to solve the optimal formation control problem in discrete-time in the presence of unknown internal dynamics and a known control coefficient matrix. All NN's are tuned online using novel …

We investigate the multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channel with channel distribution information available at the transmitter. the so-called fading-paper model is considered with Nt transmit antennas, and each user having Nr receive antennas. Near-optimal designs are proposed for the inflation factor matrix under general fading conditions, based on maximizing the approximation of linear assignment capacity. It is proved that for Nt ≤ Nr, this matrix has a similar structure and achieves a similar interference elimination effect as dirty-paper coding. Also, low complexity iterative algorithms are proposed for Nt > N r case, which yield a good choice for the inflation factor matrix …

Low Complexity Turbo Detection Of Coded Under-Determined Mimo Systems, Michael L. Walker, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The turbo detection of a coded under-determined multiple-input multiple-output (UD-MIMO) system is studied in this paper. a UD-MIMO system with N transmit antennas and M < N receive antennas has more unknowns than the observations. However, most existing low complexity detectors, such as the vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) or the block decision feedback equalizer (BDFE), work only when M ≥ N. We propose a new turbo detector structure that combines the existing generalized parallel interference cancellation (GPIC) technique and a new generalized serial interference cancellation (GSIC) technique, with a soft-input soft-output (SISO) BDFE. in the first iteration, the GPIC-BDFE equalization is adopted. from the second iteration and beyond, due to the availability of the a priori soft information, the UD-MIMO system can be partitioned into multiple sub-systems by using a reliability-Based partition scheme. Then, the GSIC-BDFE equalization, which has a much lower complexity than the GPIC-BDFE equalization, can be used. Simulation results show that the new detection scheme achieves significant performance gain as the iteration progresses with a reasonable complexity. © 2011 IEEE.

Linear Precoding For Relay Networks With Finite-Alphabet Constraints, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao, Mingxi Wang, Jianhua Lu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we investigate the optimal precoding scheme for relay networks with finite-alphabet constraints. We show that the previous work utilizing various design criteria to maximize either the diversity or the transmission rate with the Gaussian inputs assumption may lead to significant loss for a practical system with finite constellation set constraint. a linear precoding scheme is proposed to maximize the transmission rate, i.e., the mutual information, for relay networks. We exploit the structure of the optimal precoding matrix and develop a unified two-step iterative algorithm utilizing the theory of convex optimization and optimization on the complex Stiefel manifold. …

In this paper, an efficient cascaded microwave network approach is presented for power and signal integrity analysis of multilayer printed-circuit boards (PCBs) and advanced electronic packages with multiple signal traces, multiple power-ground plates, multiple vias, and external loads such as decoupling capacitors. Each parallel-plate pair, which consists of two consecutive conductor plates functioning as either power or ground in the PCBs or packages, is modeled as one individual microwave network. Equivalent circuits are used in the microwave network to model the vias, and a parallel-plate impedance matrix is formulated to account for the wave interactions between the vias and the …

Frequency-Domain Turbo Equalization With Soft Successive Interference Cancellation For Single Carrier Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a low-complexity frequency-domain turbo equalizer (FDTE) combined with phase rotation compensation and soft successive interference cancellation (SSIC) for single carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. Different from existing time-domain turbo equalizers in MIMO UWA systems, the proposed receiver implements low-complexity turbo equalization in the frequency domain to combat severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) and employs a layered structure to cope with unbalanced MIMO channels. Soft, rather than hard, successive interference cancellation (SIC) is employed in the layered iterative turbo detection to alleviate co-channel interference (CCI), and phase compensation is utilized within the layered FDTE to mitigate …

We study the electrical resistivity in the quantum Griffiths phase associated with the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition in a metal. The resistivity is calculated by means of the semi-classical Boltzmann equation. We show that the scattering of electrons by locally ordered rare regions leads to a singular temperature dependence. The rare-region contribution to the resistivity varies as Tλ with temperature T, where λ is the usual Griffiths exponent which takes the value zero at the critical point and increases with distance from criticality. We find similar singular contributions to other transport properties such as thermal resistivity, thermopower and the …

Microscopic Examination Of Hot Spots Giving Rise To Nonlinearity In Superconducting Resonators, Cihan Kurter, Alexander P. Zhuravel, Alexey V. Ustinov, Steven M. Anlage
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the microscopic origins of nonlinear rf response in superconducting electromagnetic resonators. Strong nonlinearity appearing in the transmission spectra at high input powers manifests itself through the emergence of jumplike features near the resonant frequency that evolve toward lower quality factor with higher insertion loss as the rf input power is increased. We directly relate these characteristics to the dynamics of localized normal regions (hot spots) caused by microscopic features in the superconducting material making up the resonator. A clear observation of hot-spot formation inside a Nb thin film self-resonant structure is presented by employing the microwave laser scanning …

We apply the frozen-correlation approximation (FCA) to analyze double ionization of helium by energetic highly charged ions. In this model the double ionization amplitude is represented in terms of single ionization amplitudes, which we evaluate within the continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS) approach. Correlation effects are incorporated in the initial and final states, but are neglected during the time the collision process takes place. We implement the FCA using the Monte Carlo event generator technique, which allows us to generate theoretical event files and to compare theory and experiment using the same analysis tools. The comparison with previous theoretical …
