Compressed Sensing Based Analytical Modeling For Through-Silicon-Via Pairs, Tao Wang, Jingook Kim, Jun Fan, Yiyu Shi Oct 2011

Compressed Sensing Based Analytical Modeling For Through-Silicon-Via Pairs, Tao Wang, Jingook Kim, Jun Fan, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-Silicon-Vias (TSVs) are the critical enabling technique for three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs). While there are a few existing works in literature to model the electrical performance of TSVs, they are either for fixed geometry or in lack of accuracy. in this paper, we use compressed sensing technique to model the electrical performance of TSV pairs. Experimental results indicate that with an exceptionally small number of samples, our model has a maximum relative error of 3.94% compared with full-wave simulations over a wide range of geometry parameters and frequencies. © 2011 IEEE.

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers. Part 4. Effect Of High Enthalpy, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín Oct 2011

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers. Part 4. Effect Of High Enthalpy, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we present direct numerical simulations (DNS) of hypersonic turbulent boundary layers to study high-enthalpy effects. We study high-and low-enthalpy conditions, which are representative of those in hypersonic flight and ground-based facilities, respectively. We find that high-enthalpy boundary layers closely resemble those at low enthalpy. Many of the scaling relations for low-enthalpy flows, such as van-Driest transformation for the mean velocity, Morkovin's scaling, and the modified strong Reynolds analogy hold or can be generalized for high-enthalpy flows by removing the calorically perfect-gas assumption. We propose a generalized form of the modified Crocco relation, which relates the mean temperature …

Substrate Binding Modulates The Activity Of Mycobacterium Smegmatis G, A Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenase Involved In The Biosynthesis Of Hydroxamate-Containing Siderophores, Reeder Robinson, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mycobacterium smegmatis G (MbsG) is a flavin-dependent monooxygenase that catalyzes the NAD(P)H- and oxygen-dependent hydroxylation of the terminal amino group on the side chain of l-lysine in the biosynthetic pathway of the siderophore mycobactin. Mycobactins are essential for mycobacterium growth under iron-limiting conditions encountered during infection in mammals. Thus, enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of mycobactin represent potential drug targets. MbsG was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using metal affinity and ionic exchange chromatographies. Recombinant MbsG represents the first member of this class of enzymes isolated in the active form, with a tightly bound FAD cofactor. The k cat …

Effective Approach For Estimating Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An effective approach for estimating turbulence-chemistry interaction in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers is proposed, based on "laminar- chemistry" Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes mean flow solutions. The approach combines an assumed probability density function with a temperature fluctuation scaling, which provides the second moment for specifying the shape of the probability density function. As a result, the effects of temperature fluctuation on chemical production rates can be estimated without solving an additional moment evolution equation. The validity of this method is demonstrated using direct-numerical-simulation data. This approach can be used to identify regions with potentially significant turbulence-chemistry interaction in hypersonic boundary layers and …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background Seborrheic keratoses are the most common skin lesions known to contain small white or yellow structures called milia-like cysts (MLCs). Varied appearances can sometimes make it difficult to differentiate benign lesions from malignant lesions such as melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer found in humans. Objective the purpose of this study was to determine the statistical occurrence of MLCs in benign vs. malignant lesions. Methods a medical student with 10 months experience in examining approximately 1000 dermoscopy images and a dermoscopy-naïve observer analyzed contact non-polarized dermoscopy images of 221 malignant melanomas and 175 seborrheic keratoses for presence of …

Estimation Of The Depth Of Anisotropy Using Spatial Coherency Of Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao Oct 2011

Estimation Of The Depth Of Anisotropy Using Spatial Coherency Of Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shear-wave splitting (SWS) analyses are essential in understanding the structure and dynamics of the Earth's deep interior. While splitting measurements have excellent horizontal resolution relative to other anisotropy-measuring techniques, their vertical resolution is low due to the steep incidence angle of the seismic phases used by the analyses. Here, using synthetic and real data, we present and test a simple approach to estimate the optimal depth of anisotropy by measuring the spatial coherency of the splitting parameters. The approach searches for the optimal depth by computing a spatial variation factor. Tests using synthetic SWS data produced with varying number of …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The main criticism raised in the preceding Comment concerns our suggestion that sharp conduction peaks in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O 8+δ mesas, along with absent dip-hump features, may, in general, be a result of self-heating. The author points to the variety of experimental configurations, matrix-element effects, and doping dependencies that might allow a diversity of conductance spectra. We argue that numerous mesa studies (with fixed matrix elements) firmly establish the systematic development of sharp conductance peaks with increased self-heating, and thus, the issue of nonuniversality of tunneling characteristics is not relevant. The author mentions a number of studies that …

Generation Of Isolated Attosecond Pulses In The Far Field By Spatial Filtering With An Intense Few-Cycle Mid-Infrared Laser, Cheng Jin, Anh-Thu Le, Carlos A. Trallero-Herrero, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report theoretical calculations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of Xe with the inclusion of multielectron effects and macroscopic propagation of the fundamental and harmonic fields in an ionizing medium. By using the time-frequency analysis we show that the reshaping of the fundamental laser field is responsible for the continuum structure in the HHG spectra. We further suggest a method for obtaining an isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) by using a filter centered on axis to select the harmonics in the far field with different divergence. We also discuss the carrier-envelope-phase dependence of an IAP and the possibility to optimize the …

Two-color (800- and 400-nm) short (45-fs) linearly polarized pulses are used to ionize and dissociate CO and NO. The emission of Cq+, Nq+, and O⁺ fragments indicates that the higher ionization rate occurs when the peak electric field points from C to O in CO and from N to O in NO. This preferred direction is in agreement with that predicted by Stark-corrected strong-field-approximation calculations.

Remote Sensing Of Soil Moisture Using Airborne Hyperspectral Data, Michael Finn, Mark Lewis, David Bosch, Mario Giraldo, Kristina Yamamoto, Dana Sullivan, Russell Kincaid, Ronaldo Luna, Gopala Allam, Craig Kvien, Michael Williams Oct 2011

Remote Sensing Of Soil Moisture Using Airborne Hyperspectral Data, Michael Finn, Mark Lewis, David Bosch, Mario Giraldo, Kristina Yamamoto, Dana Sullivan, Russell Kincaid, Ronaldo Luna, Gopala Allam, Craig Kvien, Michael Williams

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Landscape assessment of soil moisture is critical to understanding the hydrological cycle at the regional scale and in broad-scale studies of biophysical processes affected by global climate changes in temperature and precipitation. Traditional efforts to measure soil moisture have been principally restricted to in situ measurements, so remote sensing techniques are often employed. Hyperspectral sensors with finer spatial resolution and narrow band widths may offer an alternative to traditional multispectral analysis of soil moisture, particularly in landscapes with high spatial heterogeneity. This preliminary research evaluates the ability of remotely sensed hyperspectral data to quantify soil moisture for the Little River …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report documents the lessons learned from damage caused in the May 12, 2008, M7.9 earthquake in Wenchuan County, China. The damage to the 14 observed bridges reminded the researchers of damage suffered during the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake in California. The bridges had few seismic details such as long seats, large shear keys, or tightly spaced transverse reinforcement. Most arch and girder bridges collapsed due to surface rupturing of the seismic faults in the Longmen-Shan thrust zone. A significant portion of roadways and bridges were pushed away or buried by landslides in the steep slopes of mountainous terrain. Damage …

Modification Of Digital Music Files For Use In Human Temporary Threshold Shift Studies, C. G. Le Prell, Q. Yang, J. G. Harris Oct 2011

Modification Of Digital Music Files For Use In Human Temporary Threshold Shift Studies, C. G. Le Prell, Q. Yang, J. G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An exposure that is reproducible across clinical/laboratory environments, and appealing to subjects, is described here. Digital music files are level-equated within and across songs such that playlists deliver an exposure that is consistent across time. Modified music is more pleasant to listen to than pure tones or shaped noise and closely follows music exposures subjects may normally experience. Multiple therapeutics reduce noise-induced hearing loss in animals, but human trial design is complicated by limited access to noise-exposed subject populations. The development of standard music exposure parameters for temporary threshold shift studies would allow comparison of protection across agents with real-world …

Post-Earthquake Reconnaissance Report On Transportation Infrastructure Impact Of The February 27, 2010, Offshore Maule Earthquake In Chile, Wen-Huei Phillip Yen, Genda Chen, Ian G. Buckle, Tony M. Allen, Daniel E. Alzamora, Jeffrey Ger, Juan G. Arias

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report documents the findings and lessons learned from the February 27, 2010, M8.8 offshore Maule earthquake in Chile. Fewer than 0.15 percent of the bridges in Chile's inventory, most built after 1995, collapsed or suffered damage that rendered them useless. Many spans of precast prestressed discontinuous girder bridges with continuous decks fell off their supports, probably due to significant in-plane rotation of the superstructure as a result of severe shaking. Lateral steel stoppers used to provide both vertical and lateral restraints on girders were largely unsuccessful due to their inadequate connection detail to cap beams and abutments. Reinforced concrete …

Cloud computing enables highly scalable services to be easily consumed over the Internet on an as-needed basis. a major feature of the cloud services is that users' data is usually processed remotely in unknown machines that users do not own or operate. While enjoying the convenience brought by this new emerging technology, users' fears of losing control of their own data (particularly financial and health data) can become a significant barrier to the wide adoption of cloud services. to address this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel highly decentralized information accountability framework to keep track of the actual …

The ontology has become a useful model for organizing knowledge. This is particularly true in the field of biomedicine, where individual ontologies have been created for specific data domains ranging from genomics through species morphologies to human anatomical reference ontologies. Although specific sets of relationships have been proposed to improve the accuracy and consistency of such ontologies, there has been little to nothing proposed concerning the organization of those relationships. to help address this deficiency, herein we present a Reference Ontology of Anatomical Relations (ROAR). ROAR extends the concepts used in existing biomedical ontologies by defining and hierarchically organizing temporal, …

Cooperative Approaches Indicating To Capacity And Power Control For Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Liuju Wu, Maciej Jan Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, two integrated schemes for fair capacity allocation and power control for ad hoc wireless network are presented. the game theory approach is utilized to derive a collaborative update law. in the practical wireless network, a non-uniform distribution of nodes results in varying degree of interference among the network links or hops. Such varying mutual interference may lead to unfair allocation of bandwidth and result in network congestion. as a result, some links may become bottlenecks for the entire network. Hence, it is important to fairly allocate resources in the entire network. the proposed schemes aim to address …

Theoretical Capacity Analysis For Multi-Hop Backscatter Communication Networks, Aditya V. Padaki, Maciej J. Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditionally wireless sensor networks (WSNs) employ active RF communication where the RF signal has to be generated at nodes, thus consuming a significant amount of energy. in contrast, employment of passive communication, where nodes backscatter a modulated version of the incident RF signal, offers great advantages including reducing the energy cost of communication. Existing example includes a traditional RFID system with active reader communicating directly with passive tags. However, the proposed approach targets future, more advanced systems that support a generic backscatter communication. However, the inherent asymmetry in communication, reliance on external source of RF signal, and limited energy storage …

Security Requirements Analysis, Specification, Prioritization And Policy Development In Cyber-Physical Systems, Kenneth Kofi Fletcher, Xiaoqing Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent past, the security of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) has been the subject of major concern. One of the reasons is that CPSs are often applied to mission-critical processes. Also, the automation CPSs bring in managing physical processes, and the detail of information available to them for carrying out their tasks, make securing them a prime importance. Securing CPSs is a difficult task as systems are interconnected. in order to achieve a continuous secured CPS environment, there is the need for an integrated methodology to analyze, specify and prioritize security requirements and also to develop policies to meet them. First, …
