Basis Set Dependence Of Higher-Order Correlation Effects In Π-Type Interactions, Emily J. Carrell, Cara M. Thorne, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The basis set dependence of higher-order correlation effects on -type interaction energies was examined by scanning the potential energy surfaces of five dimer systems. The dimers of acetylene (H-CC-H), diacetylene (H-CC-CC-H), cyanogen (NC-CN), diphosphorous (PP), and 1,4-diphosphabutadiyne (PC-CP) were studied in three different configurations: cross, parallel-displaced, and t-shaped. More than 800 potential energy curves (PECs) were generated by computing the interaction energies for all 15 dimer configurations over a range of intermolecular distances with the MP2, coupled-cluster single double (CCSD), and coupled-cluster single double triple (CCSD(T)) methods in conjunction with 21 basis sets ranging from a small 6-31G*(0.25) split-valence basis …

Model Reduction Of Linear Pde Systems: A Continuous Time Eigensystem Realization Algorithm, John R. Singler Jan 2012

Model Reduction Of Linear Pde Systems: A Continuous Time Eigensystem Realization Algorithm, John R. Singler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) is a well known system identification and model reduction algorithm for discrete time systems. Recently, Ma, Ahuja, and Rowley (Theoret. Comput. Fluid Dyn. 25(1) : 233-247, 2011) showed that ERA is theoretically equivalent to the balanced POD algorithm for model reduction of discrete time systems. We propose an ERA for model reduction of continuous time linear partial differential equation systems. The algorithm differs from other existing approaches as it is based on a direct approximation of the Hankel integral operator of the system. We show that the algorithm produces accurate balanced reduced order models for …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Biologically Inspired Hair Receptor Arrays In Laminar Unsteady Flow Separation, John R. Singler, Belinda A. Batten, Benjamin T. Dickinson

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bats possess arrays of distributed flow-sensitive hair-like mechanoreceptors on their dorsal and ventral wing surfaces. Bat wing hair receptors are known to play a significant role in flight maneuverability and are directionally most sensitive to reversed flow over the wing. in this work, we consider the mechanics of flexible hair-like structures for the time accurate detection and visualization of hydrodynamic images associated with unsteady near surface flow phenomena. a nonlinear viscoelastic model of a hair-like structure coupled to an unsteady nonuniform flow is proposed. Writing the hair model in nondimensional form, we identify five dimensionless groups that govern hair behavior. …

A Linear Energy Stable Scheme For A Thin Film Model Without Slope Selection, Wenbin Chen, Sidafa Conde, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a linear numerical scheme for a model of epitaxial thin film growth without slope selection. the PDE, which is a nonlinear, fourth-order parabolic equation, is the L2 gradient flow of the energy ∫Ω(-1/2 ln(1 + |ø|2) + ε2 2 |Ø(x)|2) dx. the idea of convex-concave decomposition of the energy functional is applied, which results in a numerical scheme that is unconditionally energy stable, i.e., energy dissipative. the particular decomposition used here places the nonlinear term in the concave part of the energy, in contrast to a previous convexity splitting scheme. as a result, the numerical scheme is fully …

Productivity Formulae Of An Infinite-Conductivity Hydraulically Fractured Well Producing At Constant Wellbore Pressure Based On Numerical Solutions Of A Weakly Singular Integral Equation Of The First Kind, Chaolang Hu, Jing Lu, Xiaoming He

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to increase productivity, it is important to study the performance of a hydraulically fractured well producing at constant wellbore pressure. This paper constructs a new productivity formula, which is obtained by solving a weakly singular integral equation of the first kind, for an infinite-conductivity hydraulically fractured well producing at constant pressure. And the two key components of this paper are a weakly singular integral equation of the first kind and a steady-state productivity formula. A new midrectangle algorithm and a Galerkin method are presented in order to solve the weakly singular integral equation. The numerical results of these …

Investigation Of Wellbore Stability In A North Sea Field Development, Steven Austin Hilgedick Jan 2012

Investigation Of Wellbore Stability In A North Sea Field Development, Steven Austin Hilgedick

Doctoral Dissertations

"Planning drilling operations is key to the development of oil and natural gas fields. As part of well design, wellbore stability and pore pressure analysis are main factors in determining the safe operating window for selecting mud density. The motivation for this research was to conduct wellbore stability based on exploration wells as basis for planning new offshore field developments with deviated and horizontal wells. A second objective was to investigate the use of a probabilistic approach to wellbore stability, and compare it to the conventional deterministic methods, in order to evaluate the value of including a probabilistic approach to …

Low-Complexity Soft-Decision Feedback Turbo Equalization For Multilevel Modulations, Huang Lou Jan 2012

Low-Complexity Soft-Decision Feedback Turbo Equalization For Multilevel Modulations, Huang Lou

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation proposes two new decision feedback equalization schemes suitable for multilevel modulation systems employing turbo equalization. One is soft-decision feedback equalization (SDFE) that takes into account the reliability of both soft a priori information and soft decisions of the data symbols. The proposed SDFE exhibits lower signal to noise ratio (SNR) threshold that is required for "water fall" bit error rate (BER) and much faster convergence than the near-optimal exact minimum mean square error linear equalizer (Exact-MMSE-LE) for high-order constellation modulations. The proposed SDFE also offers a low computational complexity compared to the Exact-MMSE-LE. The drawback of the SDFE …

Complex Scaling Behavior In Animal Foraging Patterns, Prabhavi Kaushalya Premachandra

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation attempts to answer questions from two different areas of biology, ecology and neuroscience, using physics-based techniques. In Section 2, suitability of three competing random walk models is tested to describe the emergent movement patterns of two species of primates. The truncated power law (power law with exponential cut off) is the most suitable random walk model that characterizes the emergent movement patterns of these primates. In Section 3, an agent-based model is used to simulate search behavior in different environments (landscapes) to investigate the impact of the resource landscape on the optimal foraging movement patterns of deterministic foragers. …

Addressing Control And Capacitor Voltage Regulation Challenges In Multilevel Power Electronic Converters, Hossein Sepahvand

Doctoral Dissertations

Multilevel power electronic converters are the current industry solutions for applications that demand medium voltage, reasonable efficiency, and high power quality. The proper operation of these types of power converters requires special control, modulation methods, and capacitor voltage regulation techniques. Both developing capacitor voltage regulation methods and addressing their associated issues with such fall within the primary focus of this dissertation. In this dissertation an investigation was conducted on the capacitor voltage regulation constraints in cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters with a staircase output voltage waveform. In the proposed method, the harmonic elimination technique is used to determine the switching angles. …

The Risk Mitigation Strategy Taxonomy And Generated Risk Event Effect Neutralization Method, Daniel A. Krus Jan 2012

The Risk Mitigation Strategy Taxonomy And Generated Risk Event Effect Neutralization Method, Daniel A. Krus

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the design of new products and systems, the mitigation of potential failures is very important. The sooner in a product's design mitigation can be performed, the lower the cost and easier to implement those mitigations become. However, currently, most mitigations strategies rely on the expertise of the engineers designing a product, and while models and for failure modes do exist to help, there are no guidelines for performing product changes to reduce risk. To help alleviate this, the risk mitigation strategy taxonomy is created from an empirical collection of mitigation strategies used in industry for failure mitigation, creating a …

Neutron Repulsion, Oliver Manuel Jan 2012

Neutron Repulsion, Oliver Manuel

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Earth is connected gravitationally, magnetically and electrically to its heat source and the source of its chemical elements - a neutron star obscured from view by waste products in the photosphere. Neutron repulsion makes the solar core like the hot filament in an incandescent light bulb. Excited neutrons are emitted from the pulsar, decay to hydrogen, and partially fuse into the helium now trapped with it in the photosphere, like a frosted light bulb. Neutron repulsion is the overlooked source of energy, the keystone of an arch that locks together many earlier, puzzling observations: 1.) Excess 136Xe accompanied primordial …

Differential Cross Sections For Single Ionization Of H₂ By 75kev Proton Impact, Uttam Chowdhury, Michael Schulz, Don H. Madison Jan 2012

Differential Cross Sections For Single Ionization Of H₂ By 75kev Proton Impact, Uttam Chowdhury, Michael Schulz, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have calculated Triply differential cross sections (TDCS) and doubly differential cross sections (DDCS) for single ionization of H2 by 75 keV proton impact using the molecular 3 body distorted wave Eikonal initial state (M3DW-EIS) approach. Previously published measured DDCS-P (differential in the projectile scattering angle and integrated over the ejected electron angles) found pronounced structures at relatively large angles which were interpreted as an interference resulting from the two-centered potential of the molecule.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

End-to-end communication in highly-dynamic airborne networks is challenging due to the presence of highly mobile nodes and the inherent nature of wireless communication channels. Domain-specific protocols are required that can address these challenges and enable reliable transmission of data in this environment. We develop the ANTP (airborne network and transport protocols) suite that operates in this highly-dynamic environment while utilising cross-layer optimisations between the physical, MAC, network, and transport layers. We show how each component in the ANTP suite outperforms the traditional TCP/IP and MANET protocols through simulation using ns-3. Having verified these protocols through simulation and analysis, the next …

Eustressed Or Distressed? Combining Physiology With Observation In User Studies, Avinash Wesley, Peggy Lindner, Ioannis Pavlidis

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article the authors describe a novel way to conduct user studies via the combination of a physiological and an observational information channel. The method enables not only the quantification of arousing emotional states but also their disambiguation into positive or negative instances. The physiological channel targets sympathetic responses and has materialized as a perspiratory signal extracted from thermal imagery of the perinasal area. The observational channel has materialized via decoding of facial expressions. However, while such decoding is usually performed in the visible spectrum, the authors have developed an algorithm to carry this out in thermal imagery instead. …

Automated Human Screening For Detecting Concealed Knowledge, Nathan W. Twyman

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Screening individuals for concealed knowledge has traditionally been the purview of professional interrogators investigating a crime. But the ability to detect when a person is hiding important information would be of high value to many other fields and functions. This dissertation proposes design principles for and reports on an implementation and empirical evaluation of a non-invasive, automated system for human screening. The screening system design (termed an automated screening kiosk or ASK) is patterned after a standard interviewing method called the Concealed Information Test (CIT), which is built on theories explaining psychophysiological and behavioral effects of human orienting and defensive …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Use of a single template-grown carbon nanotube as a separation column to separate attoliter volumes of binary mixtures of fluorescent dyes has been demonstrated. The cylindrical nanotube walls are used as stationary phase and the surface area is increased by growing smaller multi-walled carbon nanotubes within the larger nanotube column. Liquid-liquid extraction is performed to separate selectively soluble solutes in a solvent, and chromatographic separation is demonstrated using thin, long nanotubes coated inside with iron oxide nanoparticles. The setup is also used to determine the diffusion coefficient of a solute at the sub-micrometer scale. This study opens avenues for analytical …

Power Allocation And Linear Precoding For Wireless Communications With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Mingxi Wang Jan 2012

Power Allocation And Linear Precoding For Wireless Communications With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Mingxi Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation proposes a new approach to maximizing data rate/throughput of practical communication system/networks through linear precoding and power allocation. First, the mutual information or capacity region is derived for finite-alphabet inputs such as phase-shift keying (PSK), pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM), and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. This approach, without the commonly used Gaussian input assumptions, complicates the mutual information analysis and precoder design but improves performance when the designed precoders are applied to practical systems and networks. Second, several numerical optimization methods are developed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channels, dual-hop relay networks, and point-to-point MIMO systems. In MIMO …

Identification And Visualization Of Electromagnetic Coupling Paths & Nonlinear Capacitors For Esd Protection, Hongyu Li Jan 2012

Identification And Visualization Of Electromagnetic Coupling Paths & Nonlinear Capacitors For Esd Protection, Hongyu Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"The first topic of this dissertation focuses on developing methods to identify and visualize electromagnetic coupling paths. The basis of the approach is to utilize an analogy between electromagnetic energy flow and fluid flow. This allows one to apply the theories and algorithms of fluid dynamics to electromagnetics and thereby to visualize the electromagnetic energy flow. This in turn can be utilized to identify the electromagnetic coupling path.

The second topic of this dissertation investigates the nonlinearity of capacitors and suggests improved trade-off between electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and data bandwidth by using the antiferroelectric (AFE) capacitors as ESD protection. …

Design And Experimental Study Of Turbo Equalization For Multiple Antenna Systems, Amirhossein Rafati Jan 2012

Design And Experimental Study Of Turbo Equalization For Multiple Antenna Systems, Amirhossein Rafati

Doctoral Dissertations

"Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems have attracted a lot of interest in the past decade due to their capability in delivering high spectral efficiency as well as their robust performance against fading. In MIMO inter-symbol interference (lSI) channels, a severe interference problem occurs due to the lSI and co-channel interference. Thus, the error propagation problem becomes more serious, and its mitigation has to be considered when designing the receiver. In this regard, a turbo equalizer which exchanges soft information between the equalizer and the decoder has been shown to be an effective method to combat the lSI caused by …

Global Homotopy Continuation And Stability Analysis: Optimal Application To Chemical Engineering Design, David Anthony Harney Jan 2012

Global Homotopy Continuation And Stability Analysis: Optimal Application To Chemical Engineering Design, David Anthony Harney

Doctoral Dissertations

"The design of chemical engineering process equipment routinely necessitates the solution of large systems of non-linear equations. The processing speed of standard desktop computers have allowed for equation-oriented process simulators to become commercially viable. For a fully equation-oriented simulator to be competitive with standard iterative solvers, a robust and reliable non-linear equation solver is required and standard Newton methods fail to provide the necessary reliability.

Homotopy continuation methods have been proposed as a way to greatly expand the domain of convergence of the process simulator's equation solving algorithm. This research expands upon existing homotopy continuation algorithms, investigates bounding algorithms, corrector …
