In the present study we quantify stress by measuring transient perspiratory responses on the perinasal area through thermal imaging. These responses prove to be sympathetically driven and hence, a likely indicator of stress processes in the brain. Armed with the unobtrusive measurement methodology we developed, we were able to monitor stress responses in the context of surgical training, the quintessence of human dexterity. We show that in dexterous tasking under critical conditions, novices attempt to perform a task's step equally fast with experienced individuals. We further show that while fast behavior in experienced individuals is afforded by skill, fast behavior …

Monotonic Behavior Of Mississippi River Valley Silt In Triaxial Compression, Shuying Wang, Ronaldo Luna
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The static behavior of Mississippi River Valley silt was characterized using triaxial compression testing. Silt specimens, especially over consolidated ones, showed dilation behavior. There was no unique critical state among specimens with different over consolidation ratios (OCRs). with OCRs of 1, 2, and 8, the specimens exhibited normal behavior and dilated more as effective consolidation pressure dropped. However, for an OCR of 4, the specimens showed opposite behavior and dilated more as effective consolidation pressure rose. the friction angle of the silt was computed on the basis of several failure criteria, and the limiting strain was found to be the …

Smart grid technologies are gaining acceptance and are being integrated into power distribution systems as a result of public and private investment and funding. However, costs of these technologies appear to be a clear obstacle in the widespread integration and maximal use of these technologies. in this paper, the utilization of dollar pricing signals is proposed and illustrated for power distribution engineering. a signal modeled after locational marginal pricing from transmission engineering is proposed to provide pricing data locally in distribution systems. the calculation, utilization, advantages, and shortcomings of the concept are presented. a main conclusion is that the use …

Characterization Of Via Structures In Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards With An Equivalent Transmission-Line Model, Siming Pan, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vias are typical discontinuities for high-speed signal transmission in printed circuit boards (PCBs). This paper proposes an equivalent multiconductor transmission-line model for via structures in multilayer PCBs. the proposed model is based on the physic-Based circuit model, taking into account distributed effects. Various via structures with arbitrary via number, trace connections, and via stubs can be effectively handled in the equivalent transmission-line model, which is sufficiently accurate and fast to be integrated into circuit simulators for via and link-path analysis. with the proposed model, well-known transmission-line theories can be borrowed for via modeling and characterization for signal integrity in high-speed …

Optimized Power Allocation For Packet Retransmissions Of Non-Gaussian Inputs Through Sequential Awgn Channels, Xiao Liang, Zhi Ding, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work investigates the optimization of power allocation for hybrid-ARQ (H-ARQ) retransmissions of non-Gaussian inputs over a bank of independent parallel Gaussian channels. We establish a general solution for maximizing generic transceiver objective utility functions that are monotonically non-decreasing and concave function with respect to the accumulated signal to noise ratio (SNR). Specifically, we investigate optimized solutions under two performance metrics, namely, the mutual information (MI) and the union bound of symbol error rate (UBSER) under maximal ratio combining (MRC) reception. We establish that efficient utilization of parallel channels in H-ARQ retransmissions requires sequential updating of signal-channel pairing as well …

We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries using LIGO and Virgo observations between July 7, 2009, and October 20, 2010. We searched for signals from binaries with total mass between 2 and 25M⊙ this includes binary neutron stars, binary black holes, and binaries consisting of a black hole and neutron star. The detectors were sensitive to systems up to 40 Mpc distant for binary neutron stars, and further for higher mass systems. No gravitational-wave signals were detected. We report upper limits on the rate of compact binary coalescence as a function of total …

Superconducting thin film resonators employing strip geometries show great promise in rf/microwave applications due to their low loss and compact nature. However, their functionality is limited by nonlinear effects at elevated rf/microwave powers. Here, we show that by using a planar spiral geometry carrying parallel currents in adjacent turns, this limitation can be minimized. We investigate the rf current distributions in spiral resonators implemented with Nb thin films via laser scanning microscopy. The rf current density profile along the width of the individual turns of the resonators reveals an unconventional trend: maximum current in the middle of the structure and …

A Nanoporous Silicon Nitride Membrane Using A Two-Step Lift-Off Pattern Transfer With Thermal Nanoimprint Lithography, Bhargav P. Nabar, Zeynep Çelik-Butler, Brian H. Dennis, Richard E. Billo
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nanoimprint lithography is emerging as a viable contender for fabrication of large-scale arrays of 5500 nm features. A fabrication process for the realization of thin nanoporous membranes using thermal nanoimprint lithography is presented. Suspended silicon nitride membranes were fabricated by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) in conjunction with a potassium hydroxide-based bulk micromachining process. Nanoscale features were imprinted into a commercially available thermoplastic polymer resist using a prefabricated silicon mold. The pattern was reversed and transferred to a thin aluminum oxide layer by means of a novel two-stage lift-off technique. The patterned aluminum oxide was used as an etch mask …

Use Of Mill Certficates To Establish Material Properties In Testing Of Colf-Formed Steel Compoenents, Tim Stauffer, Paul Mcentee
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
Testing is often used to establish the available strength of cold-formed steel components. The evaluation of this test data requires adjustment based on the material properties of the tested components to account for values that exceed the minimum specified values. Currently, it is required that this adjustment be based on samples taken from the tested specimen or the flat sheet used to form the test specimen. However, in many cases it is not practical to obtain these samples. Instead, it is desired to permit an alternate that allows the use of mechanical properties reported by the steel supplier. The purpose …

Analytical Prediction Of Crosstalk Among Vias In Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards, Songping Wu, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Crosstalk among vias is a significant problem in high-speed multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs), deteriorating signal quality and increasing jitter, especially when circuit density is high. in this paper, a two-step via crosstalk evaluation procedure is proposed. a fast approach for crosstalk estimation is developed for net screening as the first step. Then, more accurate but more time-consuming modeling can be performed for critical nets or the problematic nets identified in the screening. the main contribution of this study includes the analytical prediction of crosstalk among vias based on an infinite parallel-plane assumption. its effectiveness and efficiency to predict the …

An Improved Multiple Scattering Method For Via Structures With Axially Isotropic Modes In An Irregular Plate Pair, Yaojiang Zhang, Arun Reddy Chada, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An improved multiple scattering method is developed for an irregular plate pair where via pad/antipad radius is electrically small and the spacing between any two vias is relatively large so that the axially anisotropic parallel plate modes can be neglected. the plate-pair impedance matrix, widely used as an important parameter in power integrity analysis and also a critical part for via coupling in the intrinsic and the physics-Based via models, is found to be related to the addition theorems of the zero-order axially isotropic propagating modes. as the impedance matrix of an irregular plate pair can be calculated by many …

Spiking Neuron Computation With The Time Machine, Vaibhav Garg, Ravi Shekhar, John G. Harris
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Time Machine (TM) is a spike-based computation architecture that represents synaptic weights in time. This choice of weight representation allows the use of virtual synapses, providing an excellent tradeoff in terms of flexibility, arbitrary weight connections and hardware usage compared to dedicated synapse architectures. The TM supports an arbitrary number of synapses and is limited only by the number of simultaneously active synapses to each neuron. SpikeSim, a behavioral hardware simulator for the architecture, is described along with example algorithms for edge detection and objection recognition. The TM can implement traditional spike-based processing as well as recently developed time …

The introduction of gases like nitrogen or neon for cooling the edge region of magnetically confined fusion plasmas has triggered a renewed interest in state-selective cross sections necessary for plasma diagnostics by means of charge exchange recombination spectroscopy. to improve the quality of spectroscopic data analysis, charge exchange and ionization cross sections for N7+ + H (n = 1, 2) have been calculated using two different theoretical approaches, namely the atomic-orbital close-coupling method and the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Total and state-resolved charge exchange cross sections are presented in detail. in the second part, we compare two collision …

Mode I (tensile) fracture is the most commonly observed failure in Geostructure's resulting from cracks in soil. Direct or indirect tensile tests have been used to evaluate the tensile strength of geomaterials. in this paper, the unconfined penetration device and experimental procedure were modified to reduce measurement errors. It was then used to determine the tensile strength of compacted soil. Factors influencing the tensile strength of the compacted soil, including the plasticity index, rate of loading, and size of specimen were discussed in detail, as well as its reliability. Experimental results indicated that the modified, unconfined penetration technique is sufficiently …

UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) is a flavoenzyme that catalyzes the conversion of UDP-galactopyranose to UDP-galactofuranose, the precursor of galactofuranose (Galf). Galf is found in several pathogenic organisms, including the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. Galf) is important for virulence and is not present in humans, making its biosynthetic pathway an attractive target for the development of new drugs against T. cruzi. Although UGMs catalyze a non-redox reaction, the flavin must be in the reduced state for activity and the exact role of the flavin in this reaction is controversial. The kinetic and chemical mechanism of TcUGM was …
