Abstract: In remanufacturing, a vital segment of the sustainable, low-carbon circular economy, existing versions of the traditional unequal-areas facility layout problem (UA-FLP) model face significant limitations in designing layouts. To be specific, in the process of minimizing the material-handling cost (MHC), these models also alter departmental dimensions, often diverging from construction specifications. This poses a difficulty, as critical equipment required for remanufacturing, e.g., sorting and cleaning machines, have unalterable dimensions, which implies that departmental dimensions cannot be changed from specifications provided. To address this, a novel Flexible Envelope UA-FLP (FE-UA-FLP) model is proposed in this work for designing layouts wherein …

Transplantation provides patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease a better quality of life and long-term survival. However, over 20% of deceased donor kidneys are not utilized and never transplanted. While this is sometimes medically appropriate, this also reflects missed opportunities. We are designing Artificial Intelligence decision support for the kidney offer process to support both demand at the transplant center and supply at the organ procurement organization. This includes (1) developing deep learning models, (2) evaluating the effect of explainable interfaces, (3) improving fairness in the model output, (4) identifying factors that influence adoption decisions, and (5) conducting a randomized …

Electricity theft presents a significant challenge to the power industry. This paper demonstrates an adaptive deep framework integrating dimensionality reduction, graph modeling, attention mechanisms, and dynamic feature refinement for improving theft detection. Principal Component Analysis squeezes consumption data while an Autoencoder extracts latent representations and denoises the input. A Gated Graph Convolutional Neural Network uses k-Nearest Neighbors to model local relationships, while Transformers capture long range global dependencies. Neural Ordinary Differential Equations then refine features over continuous time, improving adaptability to complex patterns. The framework achieves 94.01% accuracy with stratified 5-fold cross validation. However, class imbalance challenges the minority class …

Detection of anomalies and anti-patterns is essential for adaptive systems with the ability to perform without foreknowledge. Some problems require both classification and regression along with sensitivity tuning and explainability. Some have highly dimensional datasets that are time dependent. This research offers results for Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) algorithms using the BETH dataset. It unpacks metadata attributes and stages a unique approach via Abstract-Feature Analysis (AFA), hyper parameter tuning, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) within the RNN model. By removing foreknowledge, this research offers insights into RNN anomaly detection performance when an event absent in training …

Iron–chromium–aluminum (FeCrAl) class alloys are candidates for use as cladding for accident-tolerant fuels and moderators. In this context, hydrogen isotope permeation in FeCrAl alloys is an important material property. In the present work, the apparent permeability, effective diffusivity, and apparent solubility of hydrogen in the FeCrAl alloys C26M and Kanthal D (KD) were measured with gas-driven hydrogen permeation. Permeation measurements were conducted at temperatures of 400 to 700 °C and at gas-driven pressures from 1 to 100 kPa. In particular, the effect of grain size on hydrogen transport was studied with KD samples with three different microstructures: nanocrystalline (NC), ultra-fine …

We report on the electrical conductivity of barium iron phosphate glass, a candidate for radioactive waste encapsulating glass. The glass composition has been optimized for slow dissolution in hot water because the precipitation of a stable hydration layer of FeO(OH) on the glass surface enhances the water durability of the glass. The mechanism of electrical conductivity of the glass is assumed to be an electron hopping between the electronic energy levels of Fe (II) and Fe (III) ions, obeying the electron carrier generation of Fe (II) → Fe (III) + e−. The electrical conductivity of the base glass was ∼3.2 …

Quasi-2D perovskite made with organic spacers co-crystallized with inorganic cesium lead bromide inorganics is demonstrated for near unity photoluminescence quantum yield at room temperature. However, light emitting diodes made with quasi-2D perovskites rapidly degrade which remains a major bottleneck in this field. In this work, It is shown that the bright emission originates from finely tuned multi-component 2D nano-crystalline phases that are thermodynamically unstable. The bright emission is extremely sensitive to external stimuli and the emission quickly dims away upon heating. After a detailed analysis of their optical and morphological properties, the degradation is attributed to 2D phase redistribution associated …

The Effect Of Carbon Equivalent And Nodularity On Multi-Axial Casting Wall Movement During Spheroidal Graphite Iron Solidification And Cooling, Noah J. Brack, Mingzhi Xu, Jingjing Qing, Simon Lekakh
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Spheroidal graphite iron, also known as ductile iron, is an iron–carbon casting alloy used in industry for its good castability, balanced mechanical properties, and low cost. Ductile iron consists of round graphite nodules in an iron matrix. During solidification and cooling, ductile iron castings experience dynamic volume changes due to the precipitation of graphite nodules and formation of austenite. These dynamic volume changes can distort external casting surfaces, causing swell and shrinkage porosity. A novel apparatus was custom-built to capture the casting wall movement in real time along three axes. This study found that casting expansion increased with carbon equivalent …

The highly heterogeneous microstructure of ductile iron in casting includes graphite particles, non-metallic inclusions, microporosity, and other features, such as carbides distributed in the ferrite–pearlite matrix. Determination and comprehensive quantification of microstructural features are practically important however challenging. An advanced methodology based on an automated SEM/EDX analysis was developed and compared to the standard optical imaging method. In addition to backscattered electron contrast, sensitive to atomic number, a novel methodology added EDX data to identify and classify the multiple structural features at micron resolution thresholding. To quantify the shape of individual phases, the eight chord raster algorithms was used and …

Electrochemical processing of used nuclear fuel in molten chloride salts generates complex radioactive salt waste. Dechlorination of waste salt using phosphate compounds at elevated temperatures (∼600 °C) reduces the volume of material for disposal while evolving gaseous chlorine compounds that could be used to transform metallic uranium into UCl3. In this study, the effects of processing temperature, environment (air or argon), and H3PO4 precursor-to-chlorine ratio on the dechlorination efficacy of a simple alkali salt mixture (SSM) and a salt waste simulant (ERV3) were evaluated. For both salts, the highest chlorine release was concurrent with the water boiling. For the SSM, …

Nitrogen pickup during air induction melting can result in porosity and a loss of fracture toughness in ultrahigh-strength quenched and tempered steel castings. Nitrogen atoms are easily adsorbed into liquid steel upon exposure to the air, and argon shrouding alone has limited effectiveness. Previous studies have shown that proper charge sequencing and maintaining a high amount of dissolved oxygen in the melt prior to tapping and deoxidation can limit nitrogen pickup in the melt. In the current study, the effect of melt practice and charging procedure on nitrogen pickup was studied as a function of hold time in a series …

Efficient oxide scale removal is critical for maintaining surface quality and process efficiency in steel manufacturing. This study optimizes water jet descaling by evaluating the performance of flat and rotary jet nozzles under varying process parameters. Using a combined approach of experimental analysis and computational fluid dynamics, it investigates the influence of pressure (138–275 bar), lead angle (0°, 15°, 25°), working distance (50–100 mm), and spray angle (15°–25°) on descaling efficiency. Findings indicate that flat jet nozzles achieve superior performance at short working distances due to concentrated impact forces, while rotary jet nozzles sustain efficiency over extended distances through dynamic …

This study presents a novel low-temperature, combustion synthesis (CS) approach for the rapid production of belite-rich cements. CS leverages the exothermic heat released from the combustion of biofuels such as lignin and/or biomass, intermixed with pelletized limestone and quartz. At an imposed furnace temperature of ∼700°C (as opposed to 1200°C–1300°C required in a conventional kiln), the source materials are rapidly transformed to belite, resulting in energy, emissions, and economic benefits. This work explores the influence of various process parameters, viz., fuel types and contents, airflow rate, porosity, holding temperature, and holding time on the efficiency of CS-based belite synthesis. Through …

Understanding the transport and retention of elastic nanogel and microgel particles in porous media has been a significant research subject for decades, essential to the application of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, a lack of dynamic adsorption and desorption studies, in which the kinetics in porous media are seldom investigated, hinders the design and application of polymer nanogel in underground porous media. In this work, we visualized and quantified the transport and dynamic adsorption of polymer nanogel in 3D glass micromodels that were manufactured by packing glass beads in capillaries. Calibrating the linearity of fluorescence intensity to concentration, we calculated …

Viscoelastic materials have extensive military applications due to their energy absorption capabilities, with the potential to reduce blast energy imposed on buildings, vehicles, and personnel. Based on current literature, limited information is available regarding the mitigation of blast energy related to these uses. The impact of thickness, nanoparticle addition, and layering variation was assessed in this study using commercially available viscoelastic materials in open-air blasts of Composition C4 to determine shock energy mitigation capabilities. Time-pressure waveforms were recorded to identify optimal changes in shock wave characteristics: reduced peak pressure, positive phase duration, and impulse, with increased rise times. Results were …

This study investigates the application of Gurney and flight of fragment equations, typically used to predict metal fragment velocities, in modeling the water jet behavior. Three shotgun cartridge sizes were used as the energy source: 2.59 g, 5.83 g, and 7.13 g. Two configurations were tested: standard (full-barrel water load) and "negative 8" (partial water load). High-speed footage captured water column velocities, and Gurney models, including infinitely tamped and open-faced configurations, combined with the flight of fragment model were used to assess prediction accuracy. Results showed charge strength significantly affects water column velocity, with higher strengths yielding greater stability and …

This study uses response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design to optimize the HY wet ball mill work index. Key operational parameters—ore quantity, water addition, and media proportion—were systematically investigated. Variance analysis identified these factors as statistically significant (p < 0.0001), with ore quantity exhibiting the strongest influence (F value = 82.67). Optimal conditions (water addition: 1083.880 mL, media filling rate: 40.362%, ore quantity: 1827.130 g) achieved a minimum work index of 10.195 kW h t−1. Validation tests confirmed the model's accuracy, yielding an average work index of 10.168 kW h t−1 (deviation: 0.027 kW h t−1). Compared to single-factor tests, RSM optimization reduced energy consumption by 3.76% (0.3975 kW h t−1), translating to annual savings of $214,000 for a mid-sized processing plant. This demonstrates RSM's efficacy in …

This paper studies the prescribed-time Nash equilibrium (PTNE) seeking problem of the pursuit-evasion game (PEG) with second-order dynamics under the intermittent control (IC) strategy. To achieve Nash equilibrium (NE) in a user-defined prescribed-time, a time-varying high-gain function is incorporated into the design. The core challenge lies in applying IC to NE seeking, which complicates the convergence analysis and control design. To address this sticking point, we construct an auxiliary function and propose a Lyapunov function considering second-order dynamics to solve the PTNE seeking problem of PEG. Building upon the results for undirected graphs, we further extend our findings to directed …

Conventionally, a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is designed for islanded mode (IM) operation to meet specific operational requirements such as the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF). However, the operation of VSG designed for IM may not meet the operational and control criteria in grid connected mode (GCM) when the grid conditions vary. In addition, conventional VSG control technology does not consider the influence of the presynchronization scheme when connected to a weak grid, which degrades the RoCoF in IM. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, the proposed study presents a twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm to improve the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Intensity-modulated optical fiber sensors (IM-OFSs) have garnered significant research interest due to their advantageous characteristics, including simplified fabrication procedures, cost-efficient systems, and straightforward signal demodulation, leading to their widespread application across diverse fields. Nevertheless, the multiplexing technique for IM-OFSs remains underexplored, primarily because isolating the contributions of individual sensors within the system using traditional power measurements poses a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce and experimentally validate a novel approach leveraging a simple microwave-photonic fiber ring resonator (MWP-FRR). This approach enables the concurrent interrogation of two IM-OFSs based on an in-and-out-of-ring-modulation (IORM) strategy. The transmission losses of both IM-OFSs …

The bottom anode in the Direct Current Electric Arc Furnace (DC EAF) is critical for completing the electrical circuit necessary for sustaining the arc within the furnace. For pin-type bottom anodes, monitoring of the temperature of select pins instrumented with thermocouples is performed to track bottom wear in the EAF and inform the operator when the furnace should be removed from service. This work presents the results from a plant trial using distributed temperature monitoring of bottom anode pins in a 165-ton DC EAF over a two-month service period utilizing two optical fiber sensing techniques: fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and …

This paper presents a framework for real-time cognitive fatigue detection among shift workers using an integrated approach that combines photoplethysmography (PPG) data and reaction time analysis with advanced deep learning models, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Feedforward Neural Networks (FNNs). The system leverages heart rate variability (HRV) and reaction time data to identify fatigue indicators. The results demonstrate significant performance, with the first FNN model achieving a test accuracy of 98.94% and a loss of 0.2928, while the second FNN model achieved the same accuracy with a slightly higher loss of 0.3089. The LSTM model, designed for sequential …

Ensuring accurate traffic perception and road safety in complex urban environments remains a significant challenge. Advanced traffic monitoring increasingly relies on deep learning, which requires large data volumes. However, existing datasets are often limited to CCTV video footage or focus on dynamic scenarios captured by sensors mounted on ego vehicles. This narrow perspective reduces the effectiveness of comprehensive traffic monitoring, particularly for LiDAR sensors, which typically capture only the vehicle's viewpoint and miss critical areas such as intersections and pedestrian crossings. To address these limitations, we propose a holistic strategy for rapid data collection in urban settings using simulated 3D …
