Linear Precoding For Mimo Broadcast Channels With Finite-Alphabet Constraints, Yongpeng Wu, Mingxi Wang, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao Jun 2012

Linear Precoding For Mimo Broadcast Channels With Finite-Alphabet Constraints, Yongpeng Wu, Mingxi Wang, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the design of linear transmit precoder for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BC) with finite alphabet input signals. We first derive an explicit expression for the achievable rate region of the MIMO BC with discrete constellation inputs, which is generally applicable to cases involving arbitrary user number and arbitrary antenna number. We further present a weighted sum rate upper bound of the MIMO BC with identical transmit precoding matrices. the resulting bound exhibits a serious performance loss because of the non-uniquely decodable transmit signals for MIMO BC with finite alphabet inputs in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. This …

Common-Path Endoscopic Optical Coherence Tomography Application To Human Internal Organs Detection, Yanjun Li, Yinan Zhang, Xinwei Lan, Hai Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Due to the small volume of incipient Pathological Cells, the conventional imaging methods cannot effectively diagnose early-stage cytopathic effect. Since the spatial resolution of optical coherence tomography (OCT) can reach the magnitude of micron, and if OCT probe possesses the characteristic of small fabric and nice flexibility in order to easily enter human body, OCT probe can detect the cytopathic effect in a very early-stage. So, this article first introduces some existent common-path OCT system and then compares the advantages and the disadvantages of each CP-EOCT. Finally, this article mainly researches on a new common-path Endoscopic OCT (CP-EOCT) which possesses …

Multinomial Logistic Regression Model For Single-Vehicle And Multivehicle Collisions On Urban U.S. Highways In Arkansas, Ghulam Bham, Bhanu S. Javvadi, Uday R.R. Manepalli

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multivariate analysis can be used to identify the effects of several factors on the causes of a crash compared with univariate analysis. This paper uses a multivariate-analysis technique, the multinomial logistic regression (MLR) model, to examine the differences in crash-contributing factors for six collision types for both divided- and undivided-highway nonjunctions, given that a crash has occurred. Multinomial logistic regression was used to investigate (1) single-vehicle and (2) multivehicle collisions, which included (1) angular, (2) head-on, (3) rear-end, (4) sideswipe-same-direction, and (5) sideswipe-opposite-direction collisions. the risks associated with different collision types were found to be significantly influenced by various vehicle …

Development And Testing Of Chemically-Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Mark Ezzell, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has the potential to significantly reduce costs associated with concrete construction. SCC is a highly flowable, Non segregating concrete that has a variety of advantages over conventional concrete (CC). However, SCC is not without its problems, which can include increased creep and shrinkage, as well as decreased bond and shear strength. the goal of this research project was to evaluate the creep, shrinkage, and shear behavior of a chemically Based SCC mix. One of the benefits of a chemically Based approach is the potential to eliminate the negative side effects of many SCC mixes. the investigation included …

High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Sustainable Construction, Jeffery S. Volz Jun 2012

High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Sustainable Construction, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With worldwide production of fly ash approaching 800 million tons annually, increasing the amount of fly ash used in concrete will remove more material from the solid waste stream and reduce the amount ending up in landfills. However, most specifications limit the amount of cement replacement with fly ash to less than 25 or 30%. Concrete with fly ash replacement levels of at least 50% - referred to as high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete - offers a potential green solution. the following study investigated the structural performance of HVFA concrete compared to conventional Portland-cement concrete. Specifically, the research examined both …

Evolution Of A Sexually Dimorphic Trait In A Broadly Distributed Topminnow (Fundulus Olivaceus), Jacob F. Schaefer, David D. Duvernell, Brian R. Kreiser, Charles Champagne, Scott R. Clark, Melissa Gutierrez, Laura K. Stewart, Chazz Coleman Jun 2012

Evolution Of A Sexually Dimorphic Trait In A Broadly Distributed Topminnow (Fundulus Olivaceus), Jacob F. Schaefer, David D. Duvernell, Brian R. Kreiser, Charles Champagne, Scott R. Clark, Melissa Gutierrez, Laura K. Stewart, Chazz Coleman

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding the interaction between sexual and natural selection within variable environments is crucial to our understanding of evolutionary processes. The handicap principle predicts females will prefer males with exaggerated traits provided those traits are indicators of male quality to ensure direct or indirect female benefits. Spatial variability in ecological factors is expected to alter the balance between sexual and natural selection that defines the evolution of such traits. Male and female blackspotted topminnows (Fundulidae: Fundulus olivaceus) display prominent black dorsolateral spots that are variable in number across its broad range. We investigated variability in spot phenotypes at 117 sites …

All-Sky Search For Gravitational-Wave Bursts In The Second Joint Ligo-Virgo Run, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present results from a search for gravitational-wave bursts in the data collected by the LIGO and Virgo detectors between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010: data are analyzed when at least two of the three LIGO-Virgo detectors are in coincident operation, with a total observation time of 207 days. The analysis searches for transients of duration ≲ 1 s over the frequency band 64-5000 Hz, without other assumptions on the signal waveform, polarization, direction or occurrence time. All identified events are consistent with the expected accidental background. We set frequentist upper limits on the rate of gravitational-wave bursts …

Enacting Clan Control In Complex It Projects: A Social Capital Perspective, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Wee-Kiat Lim, Christina Soh, Siew Kien Sia

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

The information technology project control literature has documented that clan control is often essential in complex multistakeholder projects for project success. However, instituting clan control in such conditions is challenging as people come to a project with diverse skills and backgrounds. There is often insufficient time for clan control to develop naturally. This paper investigates the question, "How can clan control be enacted in complex IT projects?" Recognizing social capital as a resource, we conceptualize a clan as a group with strong social capital (i.e., where its members have developed their structural, cognitive, and relational ties to the point that …

Using Student Ambassadors To Relay Themes From Changing The Conversation In Engineering First Year Seminars, Sarah Rzasa Zappe, Melissa Marshall, Enrique D. Gomez, Esther W. Gomez, Angela D. Lueking

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the efforts at a large mid-Atlantic university to integrate themes from Changing the Conversation into First Year Seminars. Changing the Conversation, a 2008 book by the National Academy of Engineering, found that both male and female students were more attracted to messages describing engineering in terms relating to societal impact, such as the phrases, "Engineering makes a world of difference" and "Engineering is essential to our health, happiness, and safety." Although the research was conducted with younger students, the potential for using these themes in the undergraduate curricula could have the potential to impact persistence in engineering, …

An Inverted Teaching Model For A Mechanics Of Materials Course, Jeffery S. Thomas, Timothy A. Philpot

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Instructors at Missouri University of Science and Technology have been offering certain sections of a mechanics of materials course in an inverted format for the past two years. In this format, students learn the concepts outside of class, using a textbook, animations and videos developed by the authors, and work on homework either individually or in groups during the optional class time. Students take eight multiple-choice exams and a final exam that is common to both the inverted sections and the more traditional lecture-based sections. Homework in the inverted sections is assigned but not graded. The in-class exams are given …

Scalable Synthesis Of Palladium Nanoparticle Catalysts By Atomic Layer Deposition, Xinhua Liang, Lauren B. Lyon, Ying Bing Jiang, Alan W. Weimer

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to produce Pd/Al2O 3 catalysts using sequential exposures of Pd (II) hexafluoro acetylacetonate and formalin at 200 °C in a fluidized bed reactor. the ALD-prepared Pd/alumina catalysts were characterized by various methods including hydrogen chemisorption, XPS, and TEM, and compared with a commercially available 1 wt.% Pd/alumina catalyst, which was also characterized. the content of Pd on alumina support and the size of Pd nanoparticles can be controlled by the number of ALD-coating cycles and the dose time of the Pd precursor. One layer of organic component from the Pd precursor remained on the …

Seismic Site Classifications For The St. Louis Urban Area, Jaewon Chung, J. David Rogers Jun 2012

Seismic Site Classifications For The St. Louis Urban Area, Jaewon Chung, J. David Rogers

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Regional National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) soil class maps have become important input parameters for seismic site characterization and hazard studies. The broad range of shallow shear-wave velocity (VS30, the average shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 m) measurements in the St. Louis area results in significant uncertainties between the actual spot values and the averaged values used to assign NEHRP soil classes for regional seismic hazard studies. In the preparation of an NEHRP site classification map of the St. Louis urban area, we analyzed 92 shear-wave velocity (VS) measurements, supplemented by 1400+ standard penetration …

Upper Limits On A Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background Using Ligo And Virgo Interferometers At 600-1000 Hz, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A stochastic background of gravitational waves is expected to arise from a superposition of many incoherent sources of gravitational waves, of either cosmological or astrophysical origin. This background is a target for the current generation of ground-based detectors. In this article we present the first joint search for a stochastic background using data from the LIGO and Virgo interferometers. In a frequency band of 600-1000 Hz, we obtained a 95% upper limit on the amplitude of ΩGW(f) = Ω3(f/900Hz)3, of Ω3 < 0.32, assuming a value of the Hubble parameter of h100 = 0.71. These new limits are a …

Triple Compton Effect: A Photon Splitting Into Three Upon Collision With A Free Electron, Erik Loetstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura Jun 2012

Triple Compton Effect: A Photon Splitting Into Three Upon Collision With A Free Electron, Erik Loetstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The process in which a photon splits into three after the collision with a free electron (triple Compton effect) is the most basic process for the generation of a high-energy multiparticle entangled state composed out of elementary quanta. The cross section of the process is evaluated in two experimentally realizable situations, one employing gamma photons and stationary electrons, and the other using keV photons and GeV electrons of an x-ray free electron laser. For the first case, our calculation is in agreement with the only available measurement of the differential cross section for the process under study. Our estimates indicate …

A Fluorescence Polarization Binding Assay To Identify Inhibitors Of Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenases, Jun Qi, Karina Kizjakina, Reeder Robinson, Karishma Tolani, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

N-Hydroxylating monooxygenases (NMOs) are essential for pathogenesis in fungi and bacteria. NMOs catalyze the hydroxylation of sine and ornithine in the biosynthesis of hydroxamate-containing siderophores. Inhibition of kynurenine monooxygenase (KMO), which catalyzes the conversion of kynurenine to 3-hydroxykynurenine, alleviates neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's and Alzheimer's diseases and brain infections caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei. These enzymes are examples of flavin-dependent monooxygenases, which are validated drug targets. Here, we describe the development and optimization of a fluorescence polarization assay to identify potential inhibitors of flavin-dependent monooxygenases. Fluorescently labeled ADP molecules were synthesized and tested. An ADP-TAMRA chromophore bound to …

Templated Synthesis Of Nylon Nucleic Acids And Characterization By Nuclease Digestion, Yu Liu, Risheng Wang, Liang Ding, Roujie Sha, Nadrian C. Seeman, James W. Canary

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nylon nucleic acids containing oligouridine nucleotides with pendent polyamide linkers and flanked by unmodified heteronucleotide sequences were prepared by DNA templated synthesis. Templation was more efficient than the single-stranded synthesis; coupling step yields were as high as 99.2%, with up to 7 amide linkages formed in the synthesis of a molecule containing 8 modified nucleotides. Controlled digestion by calf spleen phosphodiesterase enabled the mapping of modified nucleotides in the sequences. a combination of complete degradation of nylon nucleic acids by snake venom phosphodiesterase and dephosphorylation of the resulting nucleotide fragments by bacterial alkaline phosphatase, followed by LCMS analysis, clarified the …

Linear Precoding For Finite-Alphabet Inputs Over Mimo Fading Channels With Statistical Csi, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao, Mingxi Wang, Jianhua Lu Jun 2012

Linear Precoding For Finite-Alphabet Inputs Over Mimo Fading Channels With Statistical Csi, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao, Mingxi Wang, Jianhua Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the linear precoder design that maximizes the average mutual information of multiple-input multiple-output fading channels with statistical channel state information known at the transmitter. It formulates the design from the standpoint of finite-alphabet inputs, which leads to a problem that is very important in practice but extremely difficult in theory: First, the average mutual information lacks closed-form expression and involves prohibitive computational burden. Second, the optimization over the precoder is nonconcave and thus easily gets stuck in local maxima. to address these issues, this study first derives lower and upper bounds for the average mutual information, in …

Two-Semester Agile Systems Engineering Design Course: Investigation And Exploration Of "Immersive" Training Technologies, Andrew S. Bodenhamer, Ivan G. Guardiola, Steven Corns, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The teaching of systems engineering is a daunting task that involves the development of curriculum capable of teaching students the systems engineering process, the design aspects of engineering, and the interdisciplinary knowledge of a variety of fields. Design is widely considered to be the central or the major distinguishing activity of engineering1. Design can be considered as the center of system engineering, in which engineers employ an interdisciplinary approach to design effective solutions to meet social needs. However, systems engineering requires that traditional academic boundaries be crossed and intertwined with other fields of engineering as well as business, socio-political, and …

A Generalized Multiple Scattering Method For Dense Vias With Axially Anisotropic Modes In An Arbitrarily Shaped Plate Pair, Yaojiang Zhang, Jun Fan May 2012

A Generalized Multiple Scattering Method For Dense Vias With Axially Anisotropic Modes In An Arbitrarily Shaped Plate Pair, Yaojiang Zhang, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Numerical addition theorems of both axially anisotropic and axially isotropic parallel-plate modes are derived using a method based on boundary integral equations. This leads to a generalized multiple scattering (GMS) method for signal/power integrity analysis of dense vias in an arbitrarily shaped plate pair, which overcomes the limitation of the conventional multiple scattering method depending on the analytical addition theorems in an infinitely large or a finite circular plate pair. Both the numerical addition theorems and the GMS method have been validated by comparing results with either analytical expressions for special cases or full-wave simulations for more general cases. Several …

Second-Order Convex Splitting Schemes For Gradient Flows With Ehrlich-Schwoebel Type Energy: Application To Thin Film Epitaxy, Jie Shen, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise May 2012

Second-Order Convex Splitting Schemes For Gradient Flows With Ehrlich-Schwoebel Type Energy: Application To Thin Film Epitaxy, Jie Shen, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We construct unconditionally stable, unconditionally uniquely solvable, and second order accurate (in time) schemes for gradient flows with energy of the form {equation presented} dx. the construction of the schemes involves the appropriate combination and extension of two classical ideas: (i) appropriate convex-concave decomposition of the energy functional and (ii) the secant method. as an application, we derive schemes for epitaxial growth models with slope selection (F(y) = 1/4 (|y| 2 - 1) 2) or without slope selection (F(y) = -1/2 ln(1 + |y| 2)). Two types of unconditionally stable uniquely solvable second-order schemes are presented. the first type inherits …

Long Time Stability Of A Classical Efficient Scheme For Two-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations, S. Gottlieb, F. Tone, C. Wang, X. Wang, D. Wirosoetisno

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the long-time stability property of a popular semi-implicit scheme for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a periodic box that treats the viscous term implicitly and the nonlinear advection term explicitly. We consider both the semi discrete (discrete in time but continuous in space) and fully discrete schemes with either Fourier Galerkin spectral or Fourier pseudo spectral (collocation) methods. We prove that in all cases, the scheme is long time stable provided that the timestep is sufficiently small. the long-time stability in the L 2 and H 1 norms further leads to the convergence of the global …

Efficient Variation-Aware Em-Semiconductor Coupled Solver For The Tsv Structures In 3d Ic, Yuanzhe Xu, Wenjian Yu, Quan Chen, Lijun Jiang, Ngai Wong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a variational electromagnetic-semiconductor coupled solver to assess the impacts of process variations on the 3D integrated circuit (3D IC) on-chip structures. The solver employs the finite volume method (FVM) to handle a system of equation considering both the full-wave electromagnetic effects and semiconductor effects. With a smart geometrical variation model for the FVM discretization, the solver is able to handle both small-size or large-size variations. Moreover, a weighted principle factor analysis (wPFA) technique is presented to reduce the random variables in both electromagnetic and semiconductor regions, and the spectral stochastic collocation method (SSCM) [10] is …

Overlapping Partitioning Techniques For Simulation Of Strongly Coupled Distributed Interconnects, Mina A. Farhan, Natalie M. Nakhla, Michel S. Nakhla, Ramachandra Achar, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The large number of interconnects in high-speed circuits is a major bottleneck for fast simulation of such circuits. Recently, waveform relaxation methods based on transverse partitioning (WR-TP) were proposed to address this issue. It was shown that the complexity of WR-TP grows only linearly with the number of lines. However, as the coupling between the lines becomes stronger, the WR-TP algorithm either fails to converge or the number of iterations required for convergence increases. in this paper, an overlapping partitioning method for WR-TP is presented, which overcomes the effect of strong coupling between the lines. Numerical examples are presented which …
