Nesfatin-1, a post-translational product of the nucleobindin-2 (NucB2) gene, is produced in several brain areas known to be important in neuroendocrine, autonomic and metabolic function, including the hypothalamus and medulla. The hallmark action of the peptide is its ability at picomole doses to inhibit food and water intake in rodents and, indeed, the effect on water intake is more pronounced than that on food intake. In preliminary studies, we observed a decrease in hypothalamic NucB2 expression in response to overnight water deprivation even when food was present, which reversed when water was returned to the animals. We therefore hypothesised that …

The Effects Of The Flyer Plate's Radius Of Curvature On The Performance Of An Explosively Formed Projectile, Phillip R. Mulligan, Jason Baird, Joshua Hoffman Jul 2012

The Effects Of The Flyer Plate's Radius Of Curvature On The Performance Of An Explosively Formed Projectile, Phillip R. Mulligan, Jason Baird, Joshua Hoffman

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An explosively formed projectile (EFP) is known for its ability to penetrate vehicle armor effectively. Understanding how an EFP’s physical parameters affect its performance is crucial to development of armor capable of defeating such devices. The present study uses two flyer plate radii of curvature to identify the experimental effects of the flyer plate’s radius of curvature on the measured projectile velocity, depth of penetration, and projectile shape. The Gurney equation is an algebraic relationship for estimating the velocity imparted to a metal plate in contact with detonating explosives. The authors of this research used a form of the Gurney …

We present the results of a LIGO search for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with GRB 051103, a short-duration hard-spectrum gamma-ray burst (GRB) whose electromagnetically determined sky position is coincident with the spiral galaxy M81, which is 3.6 Mpc from Earth. Possible progenitors for short-hard GRBs include compact object mergers and soft gamma repeater (SGR) giant flares. A merger progenitor would produce a characteristic GW signal that should be detectable at a distance of M81, while GW emission from an SGR is not expected to be detectable at that distance. We found no evidence of a GW signal associated with GRB …

Single ionization of the methane (CH4) 1t2 orbital by 54 eV electron impact has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The measured triple differential cross sections cover nearly a 4π solid angle for the emission of low energy electrons and a range of projectile scattering angles. Experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations from the distorted wave Born approximation and the molecular three-body distorted wave models. It is found that theory can give a proper description of the main features of experimental cross section only at smaller scattering angles. For larger scattering angles, significant discrepancies between experiment and …

We show that photoionization cross sections of atoms can be accurately extracted from the high-order-harmonic spectra generated by intense infrared lasers only if the degree of ionization in the gas medium is small, implying that for this purpose the high-order-harmonic generation spectra should be taken at low gas pressure and at low laser intensity experimentally.

Spin injection and precession in bulk wurtzite n-GaN with different doping densities are demonstrated with a ferromagnetic MnAs contact using the three-terminal Hanle measurement technique. Theoretical analysis using minimum fitting parameters indicates that the spin accumulation is primarily in the n-GaN channel rather than at the ferromagnet (FM)/semiconductor (SC) interface states. Spin relaxation in GaN is interpreted in terms of the D'yakonov-Perel mechanism, yielding a maximum spin lifetime of 44 ps and a spin diffusion length of 175 nm at room temperature. Our results indicate that epitaxial ferromagnetic MnAs is a suitable high-temperature spin injector for GaN.

Recently experimental fully differential cross sections (FDCS) have been reported for double capture in proton helium collisions which disagree with existing theoretical calculations by two orders of magnitude. We introduce here a theoretical model for charge transfer processes which is fully quantum mechanical and takes all post collision interactions (PCI) between the particles into account exactly. The results of this model are in much better agreement with experimental data.

Effects Of Rare-Earth Doping On Femtosecond Laser Waveguide Writing In Zinc Polyphosphate Glass, Luke B. Fletcher, Jon J. Witcher, Neil Troy, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Richard K. Brow, Denise M. Krol

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have investigated waveguide writing in Er-Yb doped zinc polyphosphate glass using a femtosecond laser with a repetition rate of 1 KHz. We find that fabrication of good waveguides requires a glass composition with an O/P ratio of 3.25. The dependence on laser writing parameters including laser fluence, focusing conditions, and scan speed is reported. Waveguide properties together with absorption and emission data indicate that these glasses can be used for the fabrication of compact, high gain amplifying devices.

Measured complex reflection coefficient of a spatially-extended stratified composite structure, using an open-ended waveguide, can be effectively used to extract key material and geometrical characteristics of any given layer. This is accomplished using a combination of an electromagnetic model and corresponding measurement data. Previously, it was shown that one parameter can be extracted if all others are known. However, practically it is desirable to extract as many pieces of information as possible. To this end the model must be "inverted". However, there is no closed-form solution for the inverse problem, given the mathematical complexity of the forward model. Consequently, we …

Recently many research studies have investigated the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. However, most were conducted on small-scale specimens. Thus, analytical models and design equations developed from those studies may not predict the actual behavior of large-scale RC beams strengthened with FRPs. in this study, an experimental study was performed on this topic using full-scale RC T-beams in order to understand the behavior of full-scale bridge beams strengthened in shear with FRP. the main parameters investigated in this study were the transverse steel reinforcement ratio and the effect of mechanical anchorage systems. …

In this paper, we consider a newsvendor problem commonly encountered in retail stores that cater to budget-sensitive shoppers. the newsvendor sells multiple products, and in addition to determining order quantities must also determine the selling price of each product sold. the demand for each product is of a stochastic nature and depends on the demands of other products, i.e., is cross-elastic. We transform the objective function into a form that is amenable to developing integer-programming solutions and then develop a numeric optimization procedure rooted in the Nelder-Mead search technique. We obtain encouraging numerical results on some small-scale and large-scale problems. …

Methods For Fast Evaluation Of Self-Energy Matrices In Tight-Binding Modeling Of Electron Transport Systems, Jun Z. Huang, Weng Cho Chew, Yumao Wu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Simulation of quantum carrier transport in nanodevices with non-equilibrium Green's function approach is computationally very challenging. One major part of the computational burden is the calculation of self-energy matrices. The calculation in tight-binding schemes usually requires dealing with matrices of the size of a unit cell in the leads. Since a unit cell always consists of several planes (for example, in silicon nanowire, four atomic planes for [100] crystal orientation and six for [111] and [112]), we show in this paper that a condensed Hamiltonian matrix can be constructed with reduced dimension (∼ 1 / 4 of the original size …

Alternative Aefie-Efie Method For Broadband Cem Simulations, Jia Liu, Lijun Jiang Jul 2012

Alternative Aefie-Efie Method For Broadband Cem Simulations, Jia Liu, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is well known that electric field integral equation (EFIE) has the low frequency breakdown problem due to the decoupling of electric and magnetic field. Augmented electric field integral equation (AEFIE) method overcomes the low frequency breakdown. However, its performance degrades with the increasing frequency. To obtain a unified method that works for both low and high frequencies, a novel method using the EFIE complement process inside AEFIE is proposed. Numerical results demonstrated that this alternative AEFIE-EFIE method is able to extend integral equations to wide band applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We describe the patterning of neuronal cultures by a laser-based printing system. Embryonic chick cortical neurons were transferred into predetermined array positions with micron accuracy, enabling detailed study of neuronal migration, aggregation, and neurite outgrowth regulated by cell-cell interactions on a homogeneous surface. Images of cells were analyzed up to 14 days. Results demonstrated that increasing the spacing between neighboring groups of cells causes intra-group cells to preferentially migrate towards each other and aggregate towards the center of the printed 'spot'. In addition, increasing the printed 'spot' size encouraged migration towards neighboring groups of cells. © 2012 IEEE.

Hench and colleagues discovered that bone could bond chemically to certain glass compositions in 1969 [1]. This group of glasses is known as bioactive glasses [1]. Some special compositions of bioactive glasses will bond to soft tissues as well as bone [1]. One of the important characteristics of bioactive glasses is their ability to release beneficial ions such as Ca2+, Na+, Zn2+, Sr2+, and PO 43- in the body, which promote self-healing [2]. Bioactive glasses generally contain much less glass former (e.g., SiO2, B2O3 etc.) than conventional …

Bone cements should have the ability to chemically bond to both bone and surgical metals, exhibit no chemical or thermal necrosis, and have no significant shrinkage or exotherm upon setting. Taking these properties into consideration, glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) have potential as bone cements. GPCs are formed by the reaction between an ion-leachable glass and an aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid (PAA) [1] and have proven antibacterial and cariostatic properties [2], which are related to their ability to release beneficial amounts of ions over time [3, 4]. The GPCs can be formulated to release ions that can have a therapeutic …

Power gating has been a very effective way to reduce power leakage. Normally, wakeup scheduling is required to control the turn-on times of sleep transistors to limit the surge current during the wakeup process. in this paper, a voltage sensor is adopted to compare the virtual ground voltage with the predesigned reference voltages and use the result to determine the turn-on times of sleep transistors. We then propose a novel wakeup scheduling formulation that considers the tradeoff between wakeup times and hardware resources incurred by the voltage sensor. to address this problem, on the one hand, an efficient algorithm is …

Small sized synchronous generator based distributed generators (DG) often have low start-up times, and therefore serve as valuable dispatchable generators in a microgrid environment. the advantage is that it allows the power network to operate in a true smart grid environment. the disadvantage is that such DGs typically tend to have low inertia and the prime movers driving these resources need to be controlled in real time for them to operate effectively in islanded, grid-connected modes and during transition. When multiple DGs are present in the microgrid, the overall control can become complicated because of the need for sharing the …

It defines the theoretical abstraction of the symptom profiles of individual patients and thus, used as a guideline in disease classification in Chinese medicine. For example, patients suffering from gastritis may be classified as Cold or Hot ZHENG, whereas patients with different diseases may be classified under the same ZHENG. Tongue appearance is a valuable diagnostic tool for determining ZHENG in patients. In this paper, we explore new modalities for the clinical characterization of ZHENG using various supervised machine learning algorithms. We propose a …

Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Here we report crystal structures of the galactofuranose biosynthetic enzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) from T. cruzi, which are the first structures of this enzyme from a protozoan parasite. UGM is an attractive target for drug design because galactofuranose is absent in humans but is an essential component of key glycoproteins and glycolipids in trypanosomatids. Analysis of the enzyme-UDP noncovalent interactions and sequence alignments suggests that substrate recognition is exquisitely conserved among eukaryotic UGMs and distinct from that of bacterial UGMs. This observation has implications for inhibitor …
