Exploring Compile Time Caching Of Explicit Queries In Programming Codes, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay Madria, Thomas Weigert
Exploring Compile Time Caching Of Explicit Queries In Programming Codes, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay Madria, Thomas Weigert
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Object oriented programming languages raised the level of abstraction by incorporating first class query constructs explicitly in the program codes. These query constructs allow programmers to express operations over collections as object queries and also provide optimal query execution utilizing query optimization strategies from domain of databases. However, when a query is repeated in the program, it is executed afresh. This paper presents an approach to reduce the run time execution of programs involving explicit queries by caching the results of repeated queries and incrementally maintaining the cached results. We propose determination of cache entries at compile time by performing …

A single mode fiber assembled with a specified length graded index multimode fiber as a collimator, which is used in common-path optical coherence tomography (CPOCT) is described in this paper. Compared with conventional collimator lens, this assembled fiber's structure possesses the advantages of small volume, easy to be fused or connected with other part of the CPOCT system. Furthermore, with this assembled structure and all fiber CPOCT system is constructed which has the potential to detect the internal bodily organs and tissues of human being. Numerical simulation and experiments are implemented to verify the effectiveness of this method. © (2012) …

Effects Of Heterogeneity In Small Π-Type Dimers: Homogeneous And Mixed Dimers Of Diacetylene And Cyanogen, Kari L. Copeland, Gregory S. Tschumper
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The homo- and heterogeneous dimers of diacetylene (H-C≡C-C≡C-H) and cyanogen (N≡C-C≡N) were studied using ab initio electronic structure computations to probe the effects of heterogeneity on noncovalent interactions between systems with delocalized π electron networks. Full geometry optimizations and harmonic vibrational frequencies were performed using the robust coupled-cluster with single and double and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) method with the triple-ζ plus 2 sets of polarization functions TZ2P(f,d)++ basis set. Seven basic configurations were examined for each dimer (cross, stacked, parallel-slipped, parallel-tipped, linear, T-shaped and Y-shaped), but only four stationary points were identified on the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of …

We revisit the loss reduction problem for network reconfiguration in power distribution systems in this paper. Besides the conventional line power loss (LPL), in our model, we introduce a new concept - the transient power loss (TPL), which is mainly induced by the communication asynchronization and response delay. TPL is often overlooked in previous works because it's hard to measure in the conventional power networks. However, we can tackle this challenge in smart grid especially with the help of smart meter. in this paper, we propose a new heuristic greedy algorithm to achieve the minimal LPL with bounded TPL and …

Model Based Diagnostics And Prognostics Of Three-Phase Induction Motor For Vapor Compressor Applications, Raja Sekhar Kraleti, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, a novel scheme for detection and prediction of multiple simultaneous faults in a three-phase induction motor in the context of vapor compression applications is presented. Induction motors used in vapor compression systems operate under variable speed conditions with variable frequencies. Such dynamic operating conditions may cause an occurrence of multiple, simultaneous faults including insulation degradation and a rotor bar breakage. These faults, when left undetected, lead to the failure of the motor and the entire vapor compression system. Hence, a condition monitoring of induction motors is essential. Conventional fault detection methods have various drawbacks including high implementation …

Neuronostatin, derived from the somatostatin preprohormone, is a recently described peptide that is produced by several tissues involved in cardiovascular regulation and metabolism, including the hypothalamus. Injection of neuronostatin into the lateral cerebroventricle led to a dose-related increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) in rats. Any attempt to inhibit the production of neuronostatin would alter somatostatin production as well, making determination of the physiological relevance of the peptide's pharmacologic effects by compromise of production approaches impossible. Therefore, we employed an alternative approach to identify and compromise the production of the neuronostatin receptor. Because neuronostatin was shown to signal via a …

Analysis And Applications Of Replenishment Problems Under Stepwise Transportation Costs And Generalized Wholesale Prices, Dinçer Konur, Ayşegül Toptal
Analysis And Applications Of Replenishment Problems Under Stepwise Transportation Costs And Generalized Wholesale Prices, Dinçer Konur, Ayşegül Toptal
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, we analyze the replenishment decision of a buyer with the objective of maximizing total expected profits. the buyer faces stepwise freight costs in inbound transportation and a hybrid wholesale price schedule given by a combination of all-units discounts with economies and diseconomies of scale. This general cost structure enables the model and the proposed solution to be also used for the supplier selection of a buyer under the single sourcing assumption. We show that the buyers replenishment problem reduces to finding and comparing the solutions of the following two subproblems: (i) a replenishment problem involving wholesale prices …

Quantum Dynamics In Atomic-Fountain Experiments For Measuring The Electric Dipole Moment Of The Electron With Improved Sensitivity, Benedikt J. Wundt, Charles T. Munger, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
An improved measurement of the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) appears feasible using groundstate alkali atoms in an atomic fountain in which a strong electric field, which couples to a conceivable EDM, is applied perpendicular to the fountain axis. In a practical fountain, the ratio of the atomic tensor Stark shift to the Zeeman shift is a factor μ ~ 100.We expand the complete time-evolution operator in inverse powers of this ratio; complete results are presented for atoms of total spin F = 3, 4, and 5. For a specific set of entangled hyperfine sublevels (coherent states), potential systematic errors …
Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Clean And Disordered Contact Process In Three Dimensions, Thomas Vojta
Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Clean And Disordered Contact Process In Three Dimensions, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The absorbing-state transition in the three-dimensional contact process with and without quenched randomness is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. In the clean case, a reweighting technique is combined with a careful extrapolation of the data to infinite time to determine with high accuracy the critical behavior in the three-dimensional directed percolation universality class. In the presence of quenched spatial disorder, our data demonstrate that the absorbing-state transition is governed by an unconventional infinite-randomness critical point featuring activated dynamical scaling. The critical behavior of this transition does not depend on the disorder strength, i.e., it is universal. Close to …

This paper describes Preformed Particle Gel (PPG) treatments for in-depth fluid diversion in four injection wells located in the northern section of the Lamadian reservoir, Daqing oilfield, China, which is a sandstone reservoir with thick heterogeneous pay zones. Forty-six producers were connected to the four treated injectors with an average water cut of 95.4% before PPG treatments. A large volume (more than 1 000 m3) of PPG suspension with concentrations of 1 900-2 500 mg/L and particle sizes of 0.06-3.0 mm was injected into each well, each injection spanning approximately four months. The injection PPG suspension volumes range …
A New Data Aggregation Scheme Via Adaptive Compression For Wireless Sensor Networks, Priya Kasirajan, Carl Larsen, S. Jagannathan
A New Data Aggregation Scheme Via Adaptive Compression For Wireless Sensor Networks, Priya Kasirajan, Carl Larsen, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Data aggregation is necessary for extending the network lifetime of wireless sensor nodes with limited processing and power capabilities, since energy expended in transmitting a single data bit would be at least several orders of magnitude higher when compared to that needed for a 32-bit computation. Therefore, in this article, a novel nonlinear adaptive pulse coded modulation-Based compression (NADPCMC) scheme is proposed for data aggregation in a wireless sensor network (WSN). the NADPCMC comprises of two estimators-one at the source or transmitter and the second one at the destination node. the estimator at the source node approximates the data value …

Swift Follow-Up Observations Of Candidate Gravitational-Wave Transient Events, P. A. Evans, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their 2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network of GW detectors (within less than 10 minutes) and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift observatory (within 12 hr). Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background. Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them …

Theory Of High Harmonic Generation For Probing Time-Resolved Large-Amplitude Molecular Vibrations With Ultrashort Intense Lasers, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, R. R. Lucchese, C. D. Lin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a theory that incorporates the vibrational degrees of freedom in a high-order harmonic generation (HHG) process with ultrashort intense laser pulses. In this model, laser-induced time-dependent transition dipoles for each fixed molecular geometry are added coherently, weighted by the laser-driven time-dependent nuclear wave packet distribution. We show that the nuclear distribution can be strongly modified by the HHG driving laser. The validity of this model is first checked against results from the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a simple model system. We show that in combination with the established quantitative rescattering theory this model is …

UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) plays an essential role in galactofuranose biosynthesis in microorganisms by catalyzing the conversion of UDP-galactopyranose to UDP-galactofuranose. The enzyme has gained attention recently as a promising target for the design of new antifungal, antitrypanosomal, and antileishmanial agents. Here we report the first crystal structure of UGM complexed with its redox partner NAD(P)H. Kinetic protein crystallography was used to obtain structures of oxidized Aspergillus fumigatus UGM (AfUGM) complexed with NADPH and NADH, as well as reduced AfUGM after dissociation of NADP+. NAD(P)H binds with the nicotinamide near the FAD isoalloxazine and the ADP moiety extending toward the mobile …

A Hybrid Li-Air Battery With Buckypaper Air Cathode And Sulfuric Acid Electrolyte, Yunfeng Li, Kan Huang, Yangchuan Xing
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We demonstrate a type of carbon nanotube based buckypaper cathode in a hybrid electrolyte Li-air battery (HyLAB) that showed outstanding discharging performances. the HyLAB has sulfuric acid as the catholyte and a large active electrode area (10 cm 2). the active cathode layer was made from a buckypaper with 5 wt.% Pt supported on carbon nanotubes (Pt/CNTs) for oxygen reduction and evolution. a similar cathode was constructed with a catalyst of 5 wt.% Pt supported on carbon black (Pt/CB). It is demonstrated that sulfuric acid can achieve high discharging current densities while maintaining relatively high cell potentials. the cell with …

Google's MapReduce has gained significant popularity as a platform for large scale distributed data processing. Hadoop [1] is an open-source implementation of MapReduce [11] framework, originally it was developed to operate over single cluster environment and could not be leveraged for distributed data processing across federated clusters. At multiple federated clusters connected with high-speed networks, computing resources are provisioned from any of the clusters from the federation. Placement of map tasks close to its data split is critical for performance of Hadoop. In this work, we add network awareness in Hadoop while scheduling the map tasks over federated clusters. We …

Reliable Power Delivery System Design For Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits (3d Ics), Pei Wen Luo, Tao Wang, Chin Long Wey, Liang Chia Cheng, Bih Lan Sheu, Yiyu Shi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) have drawn groundswell of interest in both academia and industry in recent years. However, the power integrity of 3D ICs is threatened by the increased current density brought by vertical integration. to enhance reliability, the locations of power/ground through-silicon-vias (P/G TSVs), which are used to deliver power/ground signals to different layers, must be carefully placed to minimize IR-drop. However, the currents in 3D ICs are not deterministic and exhibit both spatial and temporal correlations. in view of this, we propose a correlation based heuristic algorithm for P/G TSV placement. Unlike most existing works, the proposed …

Effect Of Frequency Oversampling And Cascade Initialization On Permutation Control In Frequency Domain Bss, Christopher Osterwise, Steven L. Grant
Effect Of Frequency Oversampling And Cascade Initialization On Permutation Control In Frequency Domain Bss, Christopher Osterwise, Steven L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a new algorithm for addressing the permutation ambiguity in convolutive blind source separation. the proposed algorithm seeks to prevent permutations by frequency oversampling, and then exploiting the induced correlation between bins. Any remaining permutation is then corrected by beam pattern estimation. Cascade initialization is shown to improve system performance while decreasing processing time, while frequency oversampling is shown to increase performance with slight increases in computational time. the algorithm is proven robust against isotropic noise, producing an SIR improvement of 12.9 dB when the reverberation time is 260 ms, and the signals at the input are only …

On An Iterative Method For Basis Pursuit With Application To Echo Cancellation With Sparse Impulse Responses, Pratik Shah, Steven L. Grant, Jacob Benesty
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Basis pursuit has been shown to be an effective method of solving inverse problems with a small amount of data when the system to be determined has a sparse representation. Adaptive filters fall under this general category of problems. Here, we use the echo cancellation context to introduce a method of solving the basis pursuit problem with an iterative method based on the proportionate normalized affine projection algorithm (PAPA). Earlier, it has been shown that PAPA can be derived from a basis pursuit perspective. Here we refine the assumptions made in those derivations and show that an iterative form of …

This paper successfully implements compressed sensing (CS) to a near-field wideband 3-D synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system. SAR data are measured at a low percentage of random-selected positions on a uniform grid of planar aperture in the strip map mode. the near-field 3-D range migration algorithm (RMA) is used in combination with the CS principle to reconstruct the 3-D image via l 1 regularized least-square approach. Experiments were performed with Q-band stepped-frequency monostatic strip map SAR imaging system on a blue foam embedded with eight rubber pads and one copper square chip. the results of the experiments show near-field …

On The Arq Protocols Over The Z-Interference Channels: Diversity- Multiplexing-Delay Tradeoff, Mohamed S. Nafea, D. Hamza, Karim G. Seddik, Mohamed Nafie, Hesham El Gamal
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We characterize the achievable three-dimensional tradeoff between diversity, multiplexing, and delay of the single antenna Automatic Retransmission reQuest (ARQ) Z-interference channel. Non-cooperative and cooperative ARQ protocols are adopted under these assumptions. Considering no cooperation exists, we study the achievable tradeoff of the fixed-power split Han-Kobayashi (HK) approach. Interestingly, we demonstrate that if the second user transmits the common part only of its message in the event of its successful decoding and a decoding failure at the first user, communication is improved over that achieved by keeping or stopping the transmission of both the common and private messages. Under cooperation, two …
