The Effect Of Variations In The Rate Of Heating On The P.C.E. Value Of Clays, Kenneth Emerson Evans Jan 1933

The Effect Of Variations In The Rate Of Heating On The P.C.E. Value Of Clays, Kenneth Emerson Evans

Bachelors Theses

"Softening temperature of ceramic materials vary with the rate of heating. Recently much discussion has centered about the proper rate of heating of cones in the P.C.E. test. The most obvious reason for the discussion is that the cones are affected by the rate of heating when tested alone for softening temperature"--Introduction, page 1.

Study Of The Substitution Of Barite For Barium Carbonate In A Whiteware Body Suitable For Brick Manufacture, Charles Edward Achuff Jan 1933

Study Of The Substitution Of Barite For Barium Carbonate In A Whiteware Body Suitable For Brick Manufacture, Charles Edward Achuff

Bachelors Theses

"Some years ago a method of manufacturing white brick from Georgia Kaolin and apatite rock was developed. This was successful for supplying an attractive white brick to the southern trade, until difficulties were encountered in securing apatite rock of sufficiently high grade to insure the continuance of manufacture of the brick...With the foregoing facts at hand, a study was made of the utilization of an auxiliary flux to replace the apatite rock. A commercial brick was developed, wherein eight (8) per cent of this flux, with forty-two (42) per cent potters flint and fifty (50) per cent Georgia Kaolin was …

The Relation Between The Mean Molecular Weight And The Absolute Viscosity Of Lubricating Oils, John Isler Moore Jan 1933

The Relation Between The Mean Molecular Weight And The Absolute Viscosity Of Lubricating Oils, John Isler Moore

Masters Theses

"Of all the properties required of a good lubricant the most important is that of the viscosity at the temperature of its use. Most lubricants consist of oils blended or compounded together in such a way as to produce an oil of a desired viscosity, falling in the special group of viscosities expressed by the Society of Automotive Engineers in their tabulations.

There have been several methods developed to enable the refiner to blend quickly and efficiently although Bell stated that the methods were largely that of trial and error. Herschel formed a chart for blending by the logarithmic rule …

A Method For Increasing The Iodine Value Of The Saturated Fatty Acids, Richard Groves Holmes Jan 1933

A Method For Increasing The Iodine Value Of The Saturated Fatty Acids, Richard Groves Holmes

Masters Theses

"The work covered by this thesis was undertaken with the idea of finding a method whereby unsaturated oils, of the drying type (those having iodine values of one hundred fifty or above), could be made from the saturated fatty acids. After an exhaustive search of the literature no evidence was found that this means of producing the unsaturated acids had ever been developed. Work has been done on the chlorination products of the fatty acids, the processes being covered by patents. No evidence however was given as to the possible structure of these compounds"--Introduction, page 1.

A Study Of The Evaporation Of Organic Liquids And Mixtures Of Organic Liquids, George Walter Eckert Jan 1933

A Study Of The Evaporation Of Organic Liquids And Mixtures Of Organic Liquids, George Walter Eckert

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to make a study of the evaporation of organic solvents. The relative rates of evaporation of the single substances and binary and ternary mixtures are to be considered. A study of the changes in composition of binary and ternary mixtures that occur on evaporation are to be made. Information on the evaporation of organic liquids is important in relation to lacquers, and for that reason the solvents used in this work are liquids commonly used in making lacquers"--Introduction, page 2.

Steric Hindrance In The Ketonic Splitting Of Substituted Acetoacetic Ester, Claude Stanley Abshier Jan 1933

Steric Hindrance In The Ketonic Splitting Of Substituted Acetoacetic Ester, Claude Stanley Abshier

Masters Theses

"The phenomenon of steric hindrance has been observed and investigated in a variety of reactions, most of which have been with aromatic compounds. In this branch of study the speeds of reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, α-mono-methyl-ethyl-acetoacetate, α-mono-ethyl-ethyl-acetoacetate, α-mono-propyl-ethyl-acetoacetate in the presence of 0.05 and 0.10 normal hydrochloric acids have been investigated at temperatures between 60⁰C. and 90⁰C. An attempt has been made to explain the results obtained"--Introduction, page 1.

Sewage Disposal Improvements At Pontiac, Michigan, Robert William Abbett Jan 1933

Sewage Disposal Improvements At Pontiac, Michigan, Robert William Abbett

Professional Degree Theses

"The existing East Boulevard Sewage Disposal Plant consists of a set of bar screens, a grit chamber, a battery of three Imhoff tanks, eight trickling filter units, of the rotary-distributor type, and three secondary settling tanks. The plant was designed for a population of 52,500 in 1919 by Clarence W. Hubbell, Consulting Engineer. At the present time the plant shows evidence of loading beyond its capacity, the distress of the Imhoff tanks being particularly acute"--Present Sewage Disposal Facilities, page 5.

Some Problems In The Construction Of Artificial And Natural Gas Pipe Lines, Waring Mikell Jan 1933

Some Problems In The Construction Of Artificial And Natural Gas Pipe Lines, Waring Mikell

Professional Degree Theses

"In 900 A.D. the Chinese piped natural gas through bamboo tubes and used it for lighting, and about 1830 artificial gas was carried by three inch wooden pipes in a town in New England. Today there are many thousands of miles of steel pipe bringing gas from Western fields to eastern cities, and many more miles of steel and cast iron pipe for the distribution of artificial and natural gas in the majority of the towns and cities in the United States. This paper will deal with the construction of acetylene welded steel pipe lines, and some of the problems …

The Location, Construction, And Maintenance Of The Rabbit Ears Pass Forest Highway, Julian Greenway Huckins

Professional Degree Theses

"The Bureau Public Roads, Department of Agriculture, has jurisdiction over the construction of, and Federal Aid Funds expended on, the Federal Aid Highways thruout the United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. It may not be generally known that the Bureau is also in direct charge of the location, construction, and maintenance of all National Forest Highways under the Department of Agriculture and all National Park Highways under the Department of the Interior. District No. 3 of the Bureau Public Roads, with headquarters in Denver, is composed of the States of Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and the Black Hills Region of South …
